When The Walking Dead’s showrunner Scott Gimple told TVLine that viewers would dig the group being introduced in “New Best Friends,” I’ll admit I was skeptical. To me, the AMC drama already seemed overpopulated. But, after getting a load of Pollyanna McIntosh’s Jadis and her fantastically freaky junkyard collective, I’m eating my words. They. Are. Awesome. Even series lead Andrew Lincoln agrees. “One of my loveliest moments on set,” the Scottish actress says, “was when he turned around and went, ‘You guys are weird. I like you.'”

[Welcome back, readers! With the 2017 Sundance Film Festival beginning this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the great midnight movies that have come out of the fest over the years. Click here for more Midnight Memories from Daily Dead!]
It’s unfortunate that when many fans hear the names “Lucky McKee” and “Sundance” mentioned in the same sentence, the first thing that comes to mind is an incident in which an audience member had a total public meltdown after the festival screened McKee’s fourth feature (fifth if you count Red, which he co-directed), The Woman, in 2011. After the movie—an adaptation of a novel of the same name he co-wrote with Jack Ketchum—premiere as part of Sundance’s Midnights program, an irate man stood up and began shouting that the movie was “disgusting” and that it degraded both men and women. The freak-out was caught on video and went viral within the film community, garnering The Woman a reputation as a piece of art so potentially transgressive and shocking that it would warrant such a response even before most people saw the movie.

Pollyanna McIntosh, star of Offspring and The Woman, co-stars in White Settlers, a film that made its splash at Cannes this year. She plays "Sarah" opposite Lee Williams' "Ed" as a couple who purchase an isolated farmhouse only to find trouble in the form of a group of pig-masked intruders. Like them or not, Kickstarter and Indiegogo have helped countless filmmakers realize visions that would never have been realized without the benefit of crowdsourcing. What's the next step in the future of fan-funded films? It just might be a new service called Tentsquare. Read on for details!
Deadline reports that Modernciné and Modern Distributors CEO and filmmaker Andrew van den Houten (Offspring) is set to launch the brand new digital film hub, which uses crowdsourcing as its hook.
Tentsquare integrates a social networking element in the making of short and feature-length film projects, forming what van den Houten describes as a "digital production studio." He’s recruited fellow indie filmmakers including the McManus Brothers (Funeral Kings) and Jeffrey Reddick (the Final Destination franchise) to the budding platform.
Members can track and interact with each other via the Tentsquare network and, in theory, contribute input into story, character development, and casting of Tentsquare projects.

When it comes to legendary horror figures, few characters come close to the horrific nature of Scotland's Sawney Bean. The long-lasting campfire story informs us that Sawney Bean was the patriarch of a cannibal family that killed over 1,000 people near the end of the 15th century. You can keep your Bloody Marys and your Jersey Devils; when it comes to long-standing local terrors, Sawney Bean is the Leatherface of urban legends. The story goes that Sawney Bean and an equally vicious wife took to the caves, built up a feral family, and murdered hundreds of unlucky travelers for food. Sounds like a perfect pitch for a horror flick, yes? As someone who discovered this creepy legend several years back, I've always wondered why there wasn't a "definitive" Sawney Bean horror movie. True, Wes Craven probably used the legend as partial inspiration for the original Hills Have Eyes (1977), and Jack Ketchum...

For me, the output of Bloody Disgusting Selects DVD line has been hit or miss. I really dug Yellowbrick Road and I really wanted to like Chop, but past that, it’s been kind of a mixed bag. However, it’s still one of the more promising runs out there and I’ll take my chances with the series anyday, but now they’ve delivered pure gold by giving the world the newest Lucky McKee flick The Woman.
Around here, McKee walks on water. The man who gave us May gets a free pass and even though he’s barely had anything released since then (The Woods was stolen away from him by studio meddling and his Masters of Horror episode Sick Girl was just too brief), you can tell from what he has put out that his black little heart is in the right place.

The Woman Directed by: Lucky McKee Written by: Lucky McKee and Jack Ketchum Starring: Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers, Angela Bettis, Lauren Ashley Carter, Zach Rand Every year there are a handful of films that make waves on the festival circuit and manage to get people talking -- not necessarily because they are great films but because they are shocking and controversial. Some would say that the ability to provoke is the sign of a great work of art, but it can also divide audiences and completely turn viewers off. Clearly this kind of hype is a double-edged sword, and yet it's hard to deny that it can bring a smaller film plenty of attention. Lucky McKee's The Woman is a film whose reputation precedes it. After causing one audience member to faint and another to stand up and berate the director at Sundance last year, it soon became the talk of the town.

Title: The Woman Director: Lucky McKee (‘The Woods’) Starring: Sean Bridgers (TV’s ‘Deadwood’), Pollyanna McIntosh (‘Offspring’), Angela Bettis (‘Girl, Interrupted,’ TV’s ‘Carrie’) and Lauren Ashley Carter (‘The Prodigies’) People often think their actions benefit everyone, and don’t always think about the consequences will negatively affect those around them. This is one of the main themes in the new horror film ‘The Woman,’ which is now available on DVD. The movie’s director and co-writer, Lucky McKee, bravely showcased the evil and conniving acts of violence seemingly upstanding people take in the privacy of their own home. They enjoy unleashing terror on their innocent neighbors, claiming the torture will benefit them and...

After first bringing the titular character to life in Andrew van den Houten's 2009 flick Offspring, Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh is back in co-writer/director Lucky McKee's hugely controversial sequel The Woman, which features the actress returning to square off against a demented family who capture her animalistic character in an effort to domesticate her.
As you can imagine, this does not go well, and soon The Woman must rise up against her captors and find freedom once again outside of their twisted little world.
Dread Central recently spoke with McIntosh, who discussed the controversy surrounding McKee's sequel as well as her initial concerns with some of the physical demands of the script and the director's clever treatment of the shocking material within the film's story.
We asked McIntosh her thoughts on returning to the role of The Woman in a sequel catered specifically for her brilliant performance three years prior now.

On Tuesday, January 24th, co-writer/director Lucky McKee's controversial deconstruction of the ideal American family, The Woman, will be released everywhere on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD platforms courtesy of Bloody Disgusting Selects. Dread Central recently caught up with McKee for an exclusive interview to discuss his latest directorial efforts, balancing shock versus substance and more. The filmmaker also answers his critics over the outrage many felt by the story he and co-writer Jack Ketchum crafted for The Woman.
The titular character in McKee's The Woman (played by Pollyanna McIntosh) first appeared in Andrew van den Houten's 2009 flick Offspring. McKee, who was a big fan of the film, discussed just how a sequel came about after meeting van den Houten and why he came on board to not only tackle a film but a book project as well that teamed him up with legendary genre writer Jack Ketchum.

I’ve started and stopped, deleted, began from scratch, it must be a year end list. I let these things stress me out far more than I should. I have a real problem with ranking films. I feel as, every film I watch, even some bad ones, are enjoyed at different levels, for different reasons. It seems wrong to me to slap an arbitrary number next to it. How do I rank my enjoyment? Especially if it’s due to different factors? Well, the answer is, I don’t. I’m going to list for you, 10 films of 2011 that I feel should be seen. Please don’t take it as an extensive list, as there are still Far too many flicks that were released at some capacity during the year that I gotten around to yet. Keep in mind that that there is no ranking involved. Movies are listed as they come to me,...

Let’s face it — there are only so many hours in the day. Trying to find time to watch anything at all can be a chore, especially when there are so many things currently vying for your attention. Since big-budget movies have big-budget marketing campaigns, a lot of smaller, independent titles tend to fall through the cracks. Below you’ll find a list of impossibly entertaining films that may have slipped through your fingers this year. These flicks come from all over the world, and they may or may not be available in your neck of the woods at this time. So, you know, there might be a very good reason why you missed it. Don’t beat yourself up too much, okay? Here they are, in no particular order. By now, most die-hard movie fans have seen the YouTube video of the man storming out of a screening of Lucky McKee’s film The Woman at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but not very many people have had a chance to see the film and why this guy left in such a huff. This coming weekend, dead in the middle of October, McKee’s new and controversial film opens in limited release, the first theatrical run the director has had since May released in 2003. May helped propel McKee into horror film stardom, so much so that with just this film under his belt, he was dubbed a “master of horror” by Showtime, who invited him to direct an episode of their series of the same name. The Woman is a sequel to the horror film Offspring, about a group of cannibals who live in the woods. The leader of this group, a...

Having whipped up a storm of controversy on its travels round various festivals, including an amusingly over the top reaction from a Sundance patron who called for the film to be burned, Lucky McKee’s “The Woman” finally arrives on DVD so that viewers can make up their own minds. Although McKee has primarily been known for the quirkily macabre like “May” and “The Woods” rather than the out and out gruesome, the fact that the film sees him joining forces with splatter nihilist author Jack Ketchum (whose other works “Red”, “The Girl Next Door”, and “The Lost” have recently made the journey to the silver screen) should give a pretty good idea of its intent. The film is actually a sequel to another Ketchum adaptation, “Offspring”, with actress Pollyanna McIntosh reprising her role, supported by McKee regular Angela Bettis (“Toolbox Murders”, “May”) and Sean Bridgers (“Deadwood”). McIntosh plays the titular woman,...

If you’ve seen Andrew van den Houten’s “Offspring”, Stuart Hazeldine’s “Exam”, or, if you’ve been exceptionally lucky, Balaji K. Kumar’s “9 Lives of Mara” — which still needs a DVD release, by the way — there’s a very good chance you’re familiar with the impossibly talented Pollyanna McIntosh. There are certain tricks when it comes to adapting a short story to film. Novels, while obviously longer and more complex, seem to be more forgiving to the new medium when they’re translated. All that extra literary real estate offers up more opportunities for the filmmaker to pick and choose what to present to an audience. With a short story, if you don’t almost take the written word point by point, you can come up with something miles away from the source material. That’s especially true when it comes to literary works that are written in the first person or that recount one character’s observations. When it’s a straight forward expositional piece, something like King’s Survivor Type, then it’s possible to take the story straight from page to screen, but when it’s something like Jack Ketchum’s Mail Order,...

There are plenty of movies that show what it’s like to be the parent of a missing child. Take movies like Ransom (1996) and Taken (2008), for example. These stories might be so common place now that we’ve become numb to them.
But what about a movie focusing on the kid who has been taken away? Stevan Mena’s Bereavement takes on the concept of growing up under the ever watchful eye of the serial killer captor, Graham Sutter (Bret Rickaby The Crazies 2010).
Martin Bristol (Spencer List Offspring, The Orphan Killer) is just like any other kid, except for the fact that he can’t feel pain. He requires an aid who checks him every hour for cuts, scrapes even broken bones; so when Martin’s mother looks outside to see an empty swing set she doesn’t just worry about his safety, she worries about him staying in one piece.

The Woman, from McKee and horror writer Jack Ketchum, is the most controversial film of the year starring Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Angela Bettis. This one isn't pretty. Lucky McKee's exploitation film The Woman earned instant notoriety this past January at Sundance when a man was caught on video excoriating the film as he stormed out of a screening. That probably meant his reaction was just as the director hoped. The Woman, after all, is about a family man who finds a feral woman in the woods and decides to take her home and chain her up for his own purposes. Just based on that description you could likely predict that the trailer, below, is not safe for work. I have friends who like this movie a lot, and I'm still perversely attracted to outre exploitation fare even though my raw appetite for it has decreased in recent years. And, with that in mind, there is something appealing in the goofy/gonzo way The Woman seems to be directed, shot and performed. I...

The Texas Frightmare Weekend ran this past April 29th-May 1st in Dallas, and as Dread Central's only North Texas operative, it fell to me to bring you everything I could from the con. Unfortunately, for the past month I was held captive by an illicit donkey show south of the Border that's also a front for a Satanic drug cult. Just the other day I managed to escape and file this report. Yes, I'm fine now -- but please, don't anyone call me 'Sniffles' or I might suffer a serious relapse.
Texas Frightmare Weekend is one of the biggest horror conventions in Texas; yet, somehow I'd managed to miss it every year I've lived here. This year I wasn't going to let that happen, and my coverage started with live tweets all weekend long so feel free to add me at MrDarkDC on Twitter and read back to see what you missed!

Directorial experience makes all the difference in this superbly taut and gripping follow up.
Before the latter half of the evening's double feature, Tmp was on hand for the Tfw Red Carpet event where director Lucky McGee and several of the cast members of The Woman strutted their stuff before heading into the theater for the premiere.
On hand from the cast were the lovely Carlee Baker, the ultra-talented Sean Bridgers and the absolutely precious Shyla Molhusen.
We were also treated to two very interesting shorts by McGee. The first, a short film starring Carlee Baker and Angela Bettis called Blue Like You had us in stitches with its simple yet curiously provocative premise of a shockingly beautiful woman shockingly out of touch with the world.
Next up was an animated short film McGee produced called Mi Burro: Esos Hueos, a surrealistic journey through the horrors of a third-world country...

Tfw opens with a Ketchum adaptation that fails to hit the mark.
Kicking off the 6th Annual Texas Frightmare Weekend was a double feature at the Lewisville Studio Movie Grill. More importantly, this particular double feature showcased two film adaptations of horror novels by the legendary author Jack Ketchum.
The first film, the 2009 Ghost House Underground's Offspring, while technically the 2nd story in Ketchum's controversial Dead River chronicles, starts us off with a bang and immediately sets the tone for the soon-to-be blood drenched evening.
The Setup
It can go without saying that once you've heard the premise of Offspring, you can pretty much figure exactly how the film will play out. The story follows a nomadic clan of primal, cannibalistic humans that hunt along the northeast coast of the U.S. and Canada.

This past week I started a new club. It’s called the Scary Face club and no you’re not invited.
I bring it up not to make you wildly jealous, but because my interviewee today might be making it into the Scary Face Club in the near future. After I saw Lucky McKee's latest film, The Woman, I could not, for the life of me, get Pollyanna McIntosh’s face out of my brain. It was like one those weird pictures of Jesus that if you stare at long enough, you’ll see ingrained in the walls around you. These do exist by the way. I’m not making it up, and I don’t recommend it because it’s a very scary thing.

The name Lucky McKee is well known throughout the horror world - or at least well known to all the people that know a thing or two about horror.
Known for shrugging off the bright lights of Hollywood and moving to Kansas, McKee spends his time concentrating on what should matter most to a filmmaker: his films. He stands apart from other directors because he doesn’t really care about money and fame. I find myself, these days, shaking my head after reading interviews with the so-called new kings (or old kings) of the horror genre and giving the stink eye to my computer. “Why can’t you be more like Lucky?”, I ask the money hungry, CGI happy creators. And now, after speaking briefly with Lucky, I continue to ask myself, in the tune of Paula Cole (remember her?), “Where have all the Luckies gone?” Yes, we need more Lucky McKees.

Lucky McKee’s The Woman has had absolutely no lack of controversy and press after its screening at Sundance this year. The movie, based on the novel by Jack Ketchum, caught massive attention after the very vocal walkout of one festival-goer at Sundance. (Dig it here)
It should come as no surprise that something from the mind of Jack Ketchum would be capable of controversy, but this is shaping up to be the showstopper. Now, visitors to the upcoming Texas Frightmare Weekend will get the chance to see a special screening of The Woman on Thursday, April 28, at 9:30 Pm. The presentation will include red carpet entrances by McGee as well as the film’s stars Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Shyla Molhusen.

Actress Pollyanna McIntosh was nice enough to swing on by Choice Cuts this week to talk about Offspring and its companion piece The Woman , directed by Lucky McKee ( May ). The latter made its premiere at Sundance and stirred up some controversy; one audience member called for the film to be burned after being revolted by its depiction of violence towards women. Well, McIntosh, who is at the center of that violence in the story, is here to have her say. We also discuss her time on the production and working with McKee. Click on the player below for more. Our man in Utah, Kabelson, has just turned in a Q&A transcription for another one of the most controversial films ever shown at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, Lucky McKee's The Woman (review here). Dig it!
In Attendance - Lucky McKee (Director), Andrew van den Houten (Producer).
McKee: Hello everyone. (Applause) Any questions?
Q: Where did you find Polly and did she do all of her own voice?
McKee: Yeah, that is all production sound. That’s all her.
Van den Houten: Polly and I had worked on the movie Offspring. When I finished directing it, I was blown away by her performance in the movie. So immediately I was like, “Wow, she needs to have a movie around her”, but I want someone amazing to direct this film. I called Lucky, and said, “Come to New York; I want you to see this film I just made”. Jack Ketchum,...

Remember the video that hit YouTube from a couple of days ago featuring some dude with his panties in a bunch over what he considered to be objectionable content in Lucky McKee's The Woman? Yeah, we're still laughing about it too.

Starring Angela Bettis (May) and Pollyanna McIntosh (Offspring), ‘The Woman’ is based on the novel by the same name, written by both Jack Ketchum & Lucky McKee. ‘The Woman’, the follow up to ‘Offspring’ made its premiere at Sundance this year and one viewer’s reaction to the film got him escorted from the theater by security. In the first few seconds of the YouTube clip, you can hear the audience applauding the film, which may carry more weight for some than the irate gentleman who claims to have “been in about 40 films” going on and on about how the film should be confiscated and burned. Why he’s holding up his iPhone, I can’t say. Is he waiting for security to man handle him? He keeps glancing over at the camera person recording his outburst though, which leaves us to wonder if he isn’t exaggerating his outrage for...

People, a word of advice if I may. If you see the names Lucky McKee and Jack "splatter punk" Ketchum on a marquee don't buy a ticket unless you're a balls out horror fan. Because ya know someone's getting eaten.
Want to see what happens when you're not prepared? Just watch this dude loose it after leaving the Sundance screening.
Synopsis:
When a successful country lawyer captures and attempts to "civilize" the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast coast for decades, he puts the lives of his family in jeopardy.
The Woman is a sort of sequel to last year's Offspring (review). It stars Angela Bettis, Pollyanna McIntosh, and Sean Bridgers.

Absent from the genre scene since 2008's Red (which he departed), Lucky McKee is back with The Woman , another thriller carrying his fingerprint that has made it into Sundance. This one, a sequel to Offspring (although that's being downplayed), tells of a lawyer who puts his family in jeopardy when he attempts to civilize a feral woman (Pollyanna McIntosh). In anticipation of its Sundance debut, we've received a handful of images which include a look at McIntosh as well as Angela Bettis, the star of McKee's May . Click below for the full gallery.

Lucky McKee has made a career out of delivering strange horror to the small group of people who know to look out for his name. For his next trick, he’s teamed with horror novelist Jack Ketchum to co-write a sequel to “Offspring,” which was adapted for film last year. McKee and Ketchum have, of course, also turned that forthcoming novel into a screenplay for McKee to direct. They then poured blood all over the screenplay and hired cannibals to tear it to shreds with their teeth. The Woman was a character played by Pollyanna McIntosh, and you can see her here again displaying what happens when you cover Lindsay Lohan with war paint and keep her locked up in a barn for ten years. Here’s the synopsis, according to the official website: “Family man and lawyer Christoper Cleek (Sean Bridgers) must do what he can to protect his family when he comes into contact with...

This writer is just back from a set visit to the currently-shooting Sony Pictures’ production Hostel Part III in Detroit, Michigan, and while press is currently under embargo on that film (rest assured, we’ll have the goods for you as soon as it’s lifted!), we did speak with the film's FX make-up head Bob Kurtzman, who gave us the lowdown on Hostel Part III as well as on the recently-wrapped The Woman.
Directed by Lucky McKee and starring Angela Bettis (May), Sean Bridgers ("Justified"), Pollyana McIntosh and Carlee Baker (Wicked Lake), The Woman (which is a sequel to the Jack Ketchum-inspired Offspring) revolves around the titular character, who is the last surviving member of a feral, nomadic clan who is pursued by a local hunter - whose perverted intention is to capture and ‘break’ the woman.
