We've been talking about Wgn America's first original scripted series, a drama titled "Salem" from Brannon Braga ("24," "Star Trek: Tng," "Terra Nova") and Adam Simon (The Haunting in Connecticut), for several months now; and finally some casting news has come for the show.
Per Deadline, Janet Montgomery ("Made in Jersey," Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, The Hills Run Red, "Entourage") has been tapped as the lead in "Salem," executive produced and directed by Richard Shepard.
Also joining the 13-episode series, set to premiere next spring, is "Being Human" and "Nikita" alum Xander Berkeley in the recurring role of Magistrate Hale, one of the Salem’s Selectmen, a company man who believes in pomp and circumstance.
Set in the volatile world of 17th century Massachusetts, "Salem" explores what really fueled the town’s infamous witch trials. The series centers on Mary Sibley (Montgomery), the beautiful and ruthless, yet vulnerable, wife of the ancient,...

Before we begin with the review of Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, let's begin, as usual, with a quick history lesson:
2003 -- Wrong Turn, a horror film about some unfortunate young people who run afoul of some vile backwoods hillbilly cannibals while traveling through the West Virginia woodlands, does pretty decent business for a "no-name" horror flick (it grossed about $28 million in North America) but went on to become a big renter at the video stores as well as a heavy-rotation cable TV favorite. The movie has a strong cast, some solid tension, a few nasty shocks, and a bunch of great practical effects from the late Stan Winston and his cohorts. 2007 -- Wrong Turn 2: Dead End premieres on DVD, and while it lacks the appreciable "seriousness" of its predecessor, this "Dtv" follow-up turned out to be a lot more amusing than any horror fan could reasonably expect. *there are spoilers here. Director/writer: Declan O'Brien. Cast: Doug Bradley, Roxanne McKee, Camilla Arfwedson, Borislav Iliev, Peter Brooke, Paul Luebke, Kyle Redmond-Jones, Radoslav Parvanov, Amy Lennox, Duncan Wisbey, Oliver Hoare, George Karlukovski, and Simon Ginty. The Wrong Turn series of films has become a little confusing to follow. Two mutant hillbillies were killed in the original Wrong Turn film: Saw Tooth and One Eye. This left Three Finger alone to fight in Wrong Turn 2: Dead End and Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead. Three Finger's deformed son Three Toes would participate in the second sequel. And, in Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, the action begins after Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings and before the original Wrong Turn and the next two sequels. Are you confused now too? Director Declan O'Brien has had to play around with the timeline of this horror franchise a bit as many of the...

I disliked Wrong Turn, really enjoyed Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, skipped Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, gave Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings a look and was mildly amused and now comes Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, which seems to have either abandoned the original Wrong Turn group of hillbilly, inbred, cannibal mountain men or is featuring their relatives. I'm not exactly sure, but here's the plot. The cutting-edge terror continues when a small mining town hosts the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween, where crowds of costumed partygoers gather for a wild night of music and mischief. But a killer celebration soon gives way to a blood-soaked feeding frenzy when an inbred family of hillbilly cannibals trick and treat themselves to a group of visiting college students who are just dying for a good time... Like the last three installments in the franchise, Wrong Turn 5 is going...

Stars: Stuart Brennan, Tamer Hassan, Rutger Hauer, Doug Bradley, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Emily Booth, Simon Phillips, Shane Richie | Written and Directed by Neil Jones
Sometimes it’s good to start watching a film with low expectations. This is not being negative about the film; it’s just a case of not knowing much about it and giving it a chance to surprise. With The Reverend I decided to do this even though the cast actually shows some real potential. It’s not every day Rutger Hauer and Doug Bradley appear in a relatively small budget film together, and even the inclusion of Shane Richie from Eastenders was quite a surprise to see.
The story, which proclaims itself based on a graphic novel, is about a new Reverend who has been given an easy job for his first parish. Stuck between a peaceful village and quite close to a...

We open, as usual, with a quick recap: Wrong Turn (2003) -- A basic but fast-paced and genuinely effective horror story about a bunch of kids in the forest running away from a trio of mutated psychotic hillbilly cannibals. Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007) -- The series returned (on video) but surprised many by delivering a follow-up full of wit, energy, and more creativity than we'd generally expect from a "direct-to-video part 2." A bunch more. This time it's a bunch of aspiring reality stars who are chased through the forest by the aforementioned mutants. Following on from the trailer and posters released last month, here’s a brand new trailer for Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, which is written and directed by Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead). The film serves as a prequel to the 2003 Rob Schmidt-directed original.
At an isolated hospital deep in the West Virginia wilderness, three hideously deformed mutants go on a merciless killing spree. Now, decades later, this family of blood-thirsty cannibals is stalking new prey: a group of young skiers trapped by a blizzard. I wasn't the biggest fan of 2003's inbred slasher Wrong Turn, and it wasn't until the pretty funny Henry Rollins-as-infinite-harddass Wrong Turn 2 that I was able to go back and enjoy the splattery fun of the first movie. I skipped Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead, given that it looked like a retread of the original, but it looks like this one might have a chance of standing out a little with what will presumably be a focus on the origins of the inbreds. Which is, you know, cousin or sister-lovin'. Could be interesting, right? Here's the official synopsis: At an isolated hospital deep in the West Virginia wilderness, three hideously deformed mutants go on a merciless killing spree. Now, decades later, this...

I never saw Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, but I really liked Wrong Turn 2 despite hating the original starring Eliza Dushku. For those unfamiliar to the now-direct-to-video Wrong Turn horror franchise, it centers on a group of inbred mutant mountain men (that's hot!) that get their rocks off killing anyone that may wander into their West Virginia wilderness hunting grounds. Yeah, we're not talking high art here, but when done right as it was in Wrong Turn 2, it can prove to be a lot of fun.
Now looking around, it looks as if Wrong Turn 3 was a dud based on reviews and I was smart for avoiding it, but one can hope Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings will actually be good. Writer/director Declan O'Brien is one sick individual. After slaughtering a small group of college students and a busload of criminals in Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, he's back to his wicked ways by amping up the gore factor, not to mention the body count, in this fall's direct-to-dvd horror flick, Wrong Turn 4. Filmed inside an eerie abandoned asylum in Brandon, Manitoba, FEARnet got the full Wrong Turn 4 tour during a chilly visit. Director: Declan O’Brien. Review: Adam Wing. Contrary to popular belief, very few sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 360 species, only four have been involved in a significant number of fatal, unprovoked attacks. An octopus has three hearts, eight arms (generally), likes to hide and doesn’t get a whole lot of sex. Probably because the male dies a few months after reproduction and the female kicks it as soon as the eggs are hatched - that would really put me off too, come to think of it. They’re intelligent though, incredibly flexible and have a great sense of touch. Which brings us neatly to the most fearsome creature of the deep, the once fabled half-shark, half-octopus - created for the military by a team of highly intelligent, not to mention incredibly stupid, scientist types. Not much is known of the sharktopus, apart from his obvious...

Forget the toothless, backwards woods folk for it's the turn of ex-sanatorium patients to torment a group of stranded teens. Dread Central managed to score a full plot synopsis for 'Wrong Turn 4' (which we're sure will eventually carry a clever pun-enhanced subtitle to go with it) and you can check it out below....

Declan O’Brien, who directed Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead and Sharktopus, is back for another go-round with those West Virginian cannibals as we told you here. But at that time, that’s all we knew.
Now, here’s the plot details for Wrong Turn 4: “In the fourth film in the popular franchise, a group of friends decide to go snowmobiling during their winter break. They make a “wrong turn”, getting lost in a storm, and seek shelter in an abandoned sanatorium. They are completely isolated by the storm and are thankful they can get out of the elements. But the sanatorium has a troubled past, and some of its former patients still reside there and are not happy about the intrusion. In a deadly game of cat and mouse, the college kids must fight to survive the night. Only their wits can save them in this scary...

Beware Sharktopus! Whilst a monster that is ‘half shark, half octopus, all killer’, as the advertising blurb (quite accurately) describes it, might not be top of the list of obvious aquatic menaces, the wacky premise certainly promises a great deal of fun. This is even more so given the presence of B-movie legend Roger Corman, and a half decent helmer in the form of Declan O’Brien, whose “Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead” made a respectable attempt at bucking the law of decreasing returns. As is usually the case with this type of film, the cast includes a sprinkling of semi-famous faces, namely the always fun Eric Roberts (who recently returned to the big screen with “The Expendables”), Sara Malakul Lane (“Belly Of The Beast”) and Us TV host and former Miss USA Shandi Finnessey. With its ridiculous creature having whipped up a fair amount of interest, the film...

The Weekend Crunch gathers news bites that we've either missed or break over, well, the weekend. It's a quick read and easy to digest. Open wide! . Badass Digest reports that Jaume Collet-Serra is at work on something called Bram Stoker's Dracula Project (obviously a tentative title). It's set up at Leonard DiCaprio Appian Way and was written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. Collet-Serra directed the upcoming Unknown as well as Orphan and House of Wax . . Ready for another Wrong Turn ? 20th Century Fox Home Video is, apparently. Bloody-Disgusting says that the studio is moving forward on a fourth entry with Declan O'Brien of Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead returning to the director's chair. Right. Because that film turned out so well. . Although I think...

It's hard to believe, but this is what I'm doing with my Saturday night. It won't be as bad as The Client List (it's can't be. Please, God, don't let it be worse than The Client List), but it's not gonna be good. Once again, additional commentary is provided by Mrs. Tk. And we are joined by one surly cat named Little Man and one mildly retarded one named Desmond.
Let's rock.
9:00 - Holy fucking balls, Sharktopus has its own theme song. It's some kind of freaky surf rock track. "Sharktopus won't be kept at bay, and you can never ever ever ever get away." I think I'm in love.
9:02 - First gratuitous ass shot. Two minutes in. Damn, that's impressive. Oh, this girl is gonna get herself all kinds of eaten.
Wait, no, I'm wrong. Sharktopus sighting already, and it just fucked up a great white shark.

Blimey, it's a new British zombie movie!
It's been a while since we heard anything about the British zombie movie Devil's Playground, but a new viral site and poster have arrived. The site is for an experimental chemical, which, if you watch the teaser trailer, is clearly the reason for the zombie virus that spreads through the country. We always thought Devil's Playground had a 28 Days Later-vibe, but seeing how both movies are British, it seems appropriate to do a little borrowing.
Mark McQueen directed the movie, which releases onto DVD in the UK on October 11. No word yet on a U.S. release. The movie stars Craig Fairbrass (Dead Cert), Myanna Burning (The Descent), Janet Montgomery (Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead), Shane Taylor (Band of Brothers), Jaime Murray (Dexter), and Craig Conway (Doomsday). A new poster for the movie is below.

When "Human Target" returns this fall, there will be two significant cast additions joining Mark Valley's Christopher Chance.
Indira Varma will join the full time cast as Ilsa Pucci, a newly widowed billionaire who is aided by Chance after the murder of her husband. Following the end of her case, she offers to become the benefactor of Chance and his partners Winston (Chi McBride) and Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley), essentially becoming the owner of their protection agency as well as providing access to nearly unlimited resources and personal connections around the world.
Varma may best be known for her roles as Niobe in "Rome" and as Suzie Costello on "Torchwood." She has also appeared on "Luther," "3 lbs.," "Little Britain" and "The Whistleblowers" in addition to starring in "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love," "Canterbury Tales" and "Bride and Prejudice."

Castle In The Sky
Hayao Miyazaki’s art has possibly never been on better display than it was with Castle in the Sky. The backgrounds are lush, colorful, and have an atmosphere to them that’s really unmatched in other animated pictures. The film is also a divine showcase of Miyazaki’s imagination when you take a look at the flying and flying machines the man invigorates the film with. This is a society you want to visit and possibly even live in, which is absolutely breathtaking. While this might be the least complex of Miyazaki’s works, it’s arguably his most gorgeous to look at. Watch this one subtitled as the English dub leaves much to be desired.
Kiki’S Delivery Service

Since news broke that recent honorary Oscar winner Roger Corman and Syfy were teaming up to gift the world with a motion picture about a half-shark/half-octopus oceanic killing machine gone wild, Sharktopus-mania has engulfed the World Wide Web. Now comes news that a former Oscar nominee has signed on to star.
Eric Roberts was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1985 for his role in Runaway Train. Now he's starring in Sharktopus. I smell Emmy.
Roberts stars as a research scientist who, with his talented daughter (presumably not to be portrayed by his real-life daughter Emma Roberts), develops a top secret military weapon - a hybrid shark/octopus that can be controlled by electrical implants. Seems the military is prepared to go to any length to deal with modern-day pirates. But in a shocking turn of events, the controls break down and Sharktopus goes wild. The resort beaches of Mexico...

Every year we always seem to get our typical sequels and most of the time they just never live up the original. Fortunately for you Tossers, I have finally found one that does! That awesome movie would be Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead which stars Tom Frederic, Janet Montgomery (The Hills Run Red), Gil Kolirin, and Christian Contreras.
Like every Wrong Turn movie that has come out previously, they have cannibals that love to destroy and eat every human being that pops up on the screen, which pretty much is a given. In this movie, which is the 3rd movie in the series (I know, “Duh, Mister Obvious”) revolves around Nate (Tom Frederic) a correctional officer who is on his last day before going off to school to become a lawyer. He is told he has one last high security transfer to do. So, that seems pretty easy right?...

When it comes to the recent output of zombie movies, it appears the the running "infected" zombie is greatly outpacing George Romero's classic, lumbering zombie. British production studio Black And White Films have two upcoming genre films with Dead Cert, a movie about the classic struggle between gangsters and vampires, and Expose, a remake of the 1976 film of the same name about a psycho personal assistant to a novelist, and now are jumping into the zombie genre with Devil's Playground.

Earlier this month, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment released Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead , the second sequel to the popular Wrong Turn franchise, this time helmed by director Declan O'Brien and starring Janet Montgomery, who most recently made her screen debut in The Hills Run Red . The launching point for the story of this entry is the escape of several vicious killers from police custody during a transport, who then attempt to make their way through the West Virginia woods to freedom. Little do they realize that Three-Finger, the last remaining member of the inbred mutant clan is still out there and ready for the hunt! Shock Till You Drop got the chance to chat with Tamer Hassan, the British actor that portrays escaped convict Chavez and talk about his working...

I come before you amazed. Not because I actually thought about sitting down to watch Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead nor because I knew what I was getting into before the first frame ever came up. This writer is in pure shock because he actually enjoyed the latest entry in the Wrong Turn franchise. The film was never going to be something that changed the way one looked at cinemas and all that could be hoped for was that it did it’s job. Suffice it to say the film does that, and creates a nice entertaining romp in the process.
The main reason Wrong Turn 3 is rolled up in a nice package of Tamer Hassan. The guy chews up the screen with all sorts of ham, but just enough to make him charming. Tom Frederic’s Nate might be our antagonist, but this is truly Hassan’s movie...

Looking lean 'n mean at this year's American Film Market (kicking off officially next week) is the UK horror film Dead Cert . In the tradition of Innocent Blood , the film fuses the gangster and vampire genre under the direction of Steve Lawson. The plot crunch goes like this: A gang of tough London gangsters get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than Vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met. Leading the cast is Janet Montgomery who hit us with a one-two punch this fall in The Hills Run Red and Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead . Dexter Fletcher ( Doom ) also stars alongside Craig Fairbass ( White Noise 2 ) and Billy...

This weeks Rapid Fire will focus on two DVD's to touch down on shelves this past Tuesday. An assortment of new films were made public on the 20th, but I was a bit late getting my rear end in gear and missed out on a couple pictures I had my sights set on. Such is life - let's move on and discuss what I did manage to check out.
Wrong Turn 3 provided a bit of a surprise for me. I got just about what I (obviously) expected; group of hopeless victims stranded in the backwoods of Hell get picked off one by one by deformed cannibals. However, there's a few twists and a couple cool kills that save the picture (to an extent). First off, we're not dealing with a reckless group of horny booze chugging, weed smoking 20 somethings, rather we've got a group of shackled convicts and a prison guard or so on deck.
