Beverly Hills Cop star Judge Reinhold has paid tribute to his longtime friend and colleague John Ashton, who has passed away at 76 following a battle with cancer.
The duo memorably played the ‘by the book’ police partners Taggart and Rosewood in the hit comedy franchise starring Eddie Murphy. Ashton was the straight man and Reinhold the clown in what became a beloved comedy pairing in the movies.
Reinhold said last night: “Thursday night John seemed like he was sleeping but the Yankees were on. They won the game, clinched the division then John made it to home. Forty years of laughs on screen and off. John Lived his life! My brother, my partner, my Sarge – I love you. There’s no smoking in Heaven, John.”

John Ashton, the legendary character actor who played the curmudgeonly (but ultimately heroic) Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop movies, has died. No news yet on the cause of death, but his passing was confirmed by his manager to Variety. In addition to his role as Taggart, Ashton had a long and distinguished career on screen, with him also playing a memorable foil to Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in Midnight Run (directed by his Beverly Hills Cop director Martin Brest).
Ashton was also a favourite of the legendary John Hughes, who cast him in a small role in She’s Having a Baby before giving him a big part (as Eric Stoltz’s father) in Some Kind of Wonderful. He also showed up in Hughes’ Curly Sue. Ashton was one of those guys who was just everywhere, with him excellent in Ben Affleck’s Gone Baby Gone, the underrated George Gallo movie Middle Men,...

Jacinda Barrett and Gabriel Macht have been married for more than two decades, and their love seems to be going strong. Macht starred on "Suits," a show that's been having a steady resurgence this summer since it hit Netflix, and this has sparked renewed interest in his love life - particularly in the fact that his wife, Jacinda Barrett, stars as his love interest in season two.
However, the pair didn't meet on the "Suits" set. They actually were already married and had a child together when Macht began his tenure on the show, which also stars Meghan Markle, in 2011. "Suits" also wasn't even the first time Macht and Barrett appeared on screen together; they both had roles in the 2009 film "Middle Men." Both Macht and Barrett have their own acting careers, with Barrett appearing in "Bridget Jones's Diary: The Edge of Reason," "The Namesake," and, more recently, "Hide and Seek.

Nearly 20 years later, “Joe Millionaire” returns this January with a revised format that puts a twist on the original ratings smash. But at least one thing remains the same in “Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer” — and that’s the presence of a butler, assisting the Joes and driving the action. Variety can now reveal who the show’s new butler is: Actor, musician, author and celebrity impersonator Martin Andrew.
As butler, Andrew will also serve as host of “Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer” and act as a guide for the contestants. The original 2003 “Joe Millionaire” featured both a butler and a host (Alex McLeod); in this new version, Andrew takes on both roles.
“I honestly fell in love with this guy,” said executive producer SallyAnn Salsano. “It was the right fit. This guy was great. I felt like it’s definitely more integrated [than the 2003 version]. I feel like this gentleman...

"You know who she is – just stay out of her way!" Lionsgate has unveiled a full trailer for an action movie called Vanquish, yet another of these dime-a-dozen bland action features with derivative plots. From the director of Double Take, Middle Men, and The Poison Rose comes this stylish, glossy action-thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Ruby Rose that shows what desperation can drive a person to do. A young mother is trying to put her dark past as a Russian drug courier behind her, but retired cop Damon forces Victoria to do his bidding by holding her daughter hostage. It also stars Patrick Muldoon, Julie Lott, Ekaterina Baker, Nick Vallelonga, Joel Michaely, and Miles Doleac. This doesn't look terrible, but doesn't look so great either. Freeman and Rose are cool to see in this, but that doesn't automatically make it a good film. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for George Gallo's Vanquish,...

It’d be tough to argue that June has been as strong of a month for new content as May was when it comes to Netflix, but the streaming giant certainly hasn’t been slouching over the last few weeks.
Between their new original Da 5 Bloods, underrated flicks like Before I Fall and The Night Clerk and TV shows such as One Piece, Legends of Tomorrow and How to Get Away With Murder, there’s certainly been a lot to dig into and below, you can find the full list of what arrived this week.

Netflix has been on a roll with its movie programming lately. Though Covid-19 lockdowns are beginning to ease in many countries, they continue to provide countless hours of much-needed entertainment for people unable to enjoy a typical summer and here’s the best of what arrived this week.
Top of the list is Spike Lee’s new joint Da 5 Bloods. This war drama finds a group of Vietnam veterans returning to the jungle in order to track down some treasure they buried long ago. Lee’s on a hot streak after the Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman and critics and audiences alike are calling this one of his best movies ever. Now that I’ve seen it, I can finally agree with everyone tipping star Delroy Lindo for awards season success next year.
Also added this week was 2018 Japanese animated movie Okko’s Inn, which walks in the footsteps of Studio Ghibli classics like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

Netflix is having a stellar month. Space Force is picking up rave reviews and big audience figures and the final season of 13 Reasons Why has been a hit. But the wheels continue to turn, with its massive library of content expanding every day.
Today, June 10th, is no exception. There are two cool new horror shows premiering, a sci-fi thriller, an interesting documentary series, some comedy and a family drama.
See below for the full list:
Released June 10
Curon *Netflix Series
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Season 5
Lenox Hill *Netflix Documentary
Middle Men
My Mister: Season 1
Reality Z *Netflix Original
Pride of place is Curon, a much-hyped Italian horror series about a mother returning to her hometown with her twin boys to find sinister supernatural goings-on. It looks set to follow in the same trend as Marianne and The Haunting of Hill House and has a pretty damn spooky trailer.

As we continue to make our way into June, it’s shaping up to be a bit of a less eventful month for new Netflix releases than May was. But that certainly doesn’t mean viewers have been left wanting for fresh content to sink their teeth into. Far from it, in fact.
We’ve seen some great new additions to the platform over the past few days already and this coming week looks to continue the trend. Admittedly, there’s not quite as much standout material here as we got at the start of the month, but that’s to be expected as the first of any given month is usually the best day when it comes to new drops.
Nevertheless, there’s still a lot to get excited about over the coming days and here’s what’s on the way:

Exclusive: George Gallo is set to direct the feature adaptation of A.J. Benza’s 2015 childhood memoir ’74 and Sunny from Simon & Schuster.
Benza, the former Daily News show business columnist and E!’s Mysteries & Scandals host and producer, is currently writing the script.
’74 and Sunny recounts when Benza’s shy, effeminate cousin from New Jersey came to live with his Sicilian-American family during the summer of 1974 in Long Island, memories that were dominated by the author’s short-tempered, outspoken, hyper-masculine father. Through anecdotes of fishing with his father, playing tackle football and conquering neighborhood bullies, Benza tells a story of triumph and acceptance, of a loving but rough-around-the-edges family that puts aside its prejudices to welcome with open arms a young boy struggling to understand his sexuality and ultimately accept himself. It’s a story in which tolerance wins over ignorance, family neutralizes fear, and love triumphs over all.

Exclusive: George Gallo has signed on to direct the thriller Covet as his next feature film after he completes The Poison Rose. The latter pic stars John Travolta and Morgan Freeman and is gearing up to start shooting this month in Georgia.
The filmmaker, noted for his screenwriting credits on Bad Boys 1 & 2 and Midnight Run as well as directing such titles as Middle Men, will reunite with Emmy-nominated producer Steve Lee Jones and Scott Lastaiti. Previously, they worked on the fitness guru Weider brothers feature Bigger, which is being sold at Cannes by 13 Films.
Written by Washington, D.C. attorney George Mahaffey, who sold his first script to Paramount, Covet tells the intense tale of a home invasion of a wealthy Persian-Jewish family by ruthless anti-Immigrant Nationalist perpetrators that goes horribly awry.
Jones says: Covet cuts deep into the zeitgeist of the current notion of anti-immigration being masqueraded as patriotism.

Funny and sad and wise and wonderful… with an absolutely heartbreaking, career-changing performance by Bill Hader. I’m “biast” (pro): really like Kristen Wiig
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Oh my god, I love this movie. I love not only the movie itself — it is funny and sad and wise and wonderful — but I love how it snuck up on me and made me fall in love with it out of nowhere. (It’s so rare for me to be this surprised by a film!) I knew nothing about it except that it stars Saturday Night Live alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader… and that’s it. If I assumed anything at all, maybe it was that I was in for some sort of wacky comedy — but I don’t recall even that minimal level of expectation.

I’m just going to put this out there: romantic comedies are now really hard to write. I mean, as a creative endeavour, it’s a full-on cliché minefield. To correctly balance all the elements required – chemistry, tension, humour, romance – while avoiding the most well-worn cinematic devices, is monumentally difficult. A fool’s errand, some might say. And yet, still they appear, because still writers try to bring something new and fresh to the genre. Still we buy those tickets, and sit in the dark – hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but knowing we will probably be disappointed.
So, here we are again, with a new trailer for another daring attempt. The film is titled Playing It Cool in this preview, but was previously known as A Many Splintered Thing. Does it achieve the impossible dream? Is this film that most elusive of treasures – that mythic creature that continually slips our collective grasp?...

James Caan makes the call in Thief.

James Caan (Middle Men) stars as a no-nonsense ex-con safecracker planning to leave the criminal world behind after one final diamond heist, but discovering that escape is not as simple as he hoped.
Finding hypnotic beauty in sparks, neon, steel and the rain-slick streets of Chicago, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness and tactile approach to action that would define such later iconic entertainments from Mann as Miami Vice, Manhunter, and Heat.

Hollywood has been attempting to make sense of computers and their effect on the world for decades. Most of the time, these films entail cartoonish portrayals of tech nerds, making them all out to be skateboard-riding, trenchcoat-wearing hackers who stare into the abyss of their laptop screens (aka "cyberspace") as they look to fight the powers that be. Also, there's usually techno music involved.
But, even in 2013, with our feet now firmly planted in the era of Web 2.0, Hollywood still hasn't learned its lesson. Take, for example, "The Fifth Estate," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this week. The film tells the true story of Wikileaks -- an organization that publishes classified material from anonymous sources -- and its founder, Julian Assange.

In case you’re out of the loop (and if you’re a fan of the Outlander series, I’m rather certain that you aren’t), Starz is bringing you an Outlander TV series in 2014, and you now have a couple more names to add to your list.
Graham McTavish will be playing Dougal MacKenzie, and Gary Lewis is Colum MacKenzie.
It’s alt-fiction, time travel, bodice-ripping, Scottish warfare… ok, actually, I barely know what it is. But, I know Diana Gabaldon’s series is massively popular, and we have another cable network hoping to spin a series into the next thing everyone has to talk about. The cast seems to be shaping up nicely.

I was a big fan of ABC‘s Zero Hour when I previewed the pilot last summer, and was disappointed that they were holding it until midseason. When they finally did air it, they had made a few changes with a few scenes, but it was still the cool Indiana Jones-feeling, Nazi hating, twisty fun mysterious show I remembered, complete with creepy baby.
Of course I was horribly disappointed when ABC canceled the series after airing just three episodes, but over-the-moon happy when they announced that they would air all 13 episodes this summer.
Well that happy day is now finally nearly upon us, as Zero Hour returns Saturday at 8/7c with a two-hour premiere. But… it isn’t the pilot. In fact, they are picking up where they left off, and will be airing episodes four and five on Saturday. If you didn’t see the first three episodes when...

We were so disappointed that Zero Hour wasn’t given more time to gain an audience, but at least were pleased when ABC announced that the entire first season would air this summer, including the first three episodes that aired in the winter.
Happily, ABC has now paired those episodes with unaired episodes from another gone-too-soon show from earlier this season, 666 Park Avenue, according to Deadline. As you know from the SciFiMafia.com Spring and Summer Primetime TV Schedule and the SciFiMafia.com Calendar, Zero Hour premieres Saturday, June 15 at 8/7c. 666 Park Avenue will join Zero Hour on June 22, following it at 9/8c and continuing weekly for three more weeks.
Excellent news, I’m So looking forward to summer Saturdays, these were great shows; thanks to ABC for airing the rest of the episodes.

We very much approve of the new-ish network practice of posting a series premiere online before the premiere, especially for good intrigue/supernatural/serial/DaVinci Code-like shows like Zero Hour. Plus Nazis, Anthony Edwards, and old clocks! I was able to check it out last summer and loved it, and hope you’ll love it too. Watch it, make sure to watch it through the very end (trust me), and talk it up with your friends. We need good shows like this to do well.

Conspiracies! Nazis! Creepy eyes! Cool old clocks! Even more than 666 Park Avenue – and we hope this isn’t a sign – we loved the pilot for ABC’s Zero Hour when we previewed it over the summer. We are So Hoping that they haven’t changed it, and that it will be really, really popular. We can’t make you like and watch it, but we might like you even better if you do.
So mark your calendars for the premiere day of our newest love, as Zero Hour makes its first appearance on Thursday, February 14 at 8/7c. Since leading the ill-fated Mike Judge-helmed “Idiocracy” in 2006, Luke Wilson hasn’t had a high-profile gig -- even something like “Middle Men” barely hit theaters -- but now the actor has snatched a role in the Black List-approved “A Many Splintered Thing.” First-time director Justin Reardon will helm the film, described as being in the same spirit as “Amelie” and “(500) Days Of Summer.” Wilson will appear alongside a talented ensemble that includes Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Philip Baker Hall, Topher Grace and Giovanni Ribisi with Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan as the leads in the the story of a man (Evans) who has given up on love, until he meets an engaged woman (Monaghan) at a charity dinner, by posing as a philanthropist. He pretends to be her platonic friend, all while trying to win her for himself, away from a man who doesn't like going on dates. [Deadline] Chloe.

It’s very rare to find an in-production movie on which virtually nothing is written or known, but that seems to be the case with the horror film Ninety, an Oxymoron Entertainment production that sounds like a cross between Se7en and Natural Born Killers. Director Darren Lynn Bousman says there will be a fun, camp element at play in the film as well.
Who is Darren Lynn Bousman? You ask.
Bousman helmed three installments (II, III, and IV) of the Saw series, which basically created the gore horror genre–or at least the newest generation of gore–and arguably comprises the biggest horror franchise of this century. Only the Final Destination series holds a candle as far as box office and number of sequels. If there’s anyone who understands the trends behind commercially successful horror films–and jaw-droppingly gruesome death scenes–it is Bousman.
It’s hard to find much information about Ninety.

After the miss that was Jack and Jill, Adam Sandler joined with another comedian, Andy Samberg (What’s Your Number?), for That’s My Boy. But it didn’t help at the box office.
In the comedy movie, Sandler stars as Samberg’s down-and-out father. See, Sandler fathered Samberg when he was a teenager and had an affair with his teacher. After she went to jail, Sandler raised the boy until his 18th birthday, then disappeared. Years later, when now weathly Wall Street staffer Samberg is ready to get married to Jamie (Leighton Meester, Country Strong), alcoholic Sandler comes back. Let the hilarity ensue.
James Caan (Middle Men), Milo Ventimiglia (TV’s Heroes) and Vanilla Ice also star in the film.

Professionally speaking, Luke Wilson has been in a bit of a rut. It.s not that he hasn.t worked. He has. It.s more like no one has bothered to go see his last few films, from Death at a Funeral or Middle Men to something called Tenure and another something called Blonde Ambition. Is that a spin-off from the Legally Blonde franchise that we.re just now hearing about? Maybe Million Dollar Man will get Wilson back on track . or at least, back up to the level his brother, Owen, appears to be operating on. Variety.s ShowBlitz says Million Dollar will be an indie sports comedy that casts Wilson as a down-and-out route driver for a soda company who gets one last shot to put his life back on the right path when he goes out for a kicking gig on a football team. Needless to say,...
