I was looking for a series with people talking to ghosts and I got much more than I expected. This was godsent.
This series is phenomenal. The music, the decor, the clothes, the romance ant the overarching mistery. The characters feel real, flawed, endearing- from the leads to the townspeople. You get to care about Anna's parents, you feel amused and fond of her uncle, even the police chief is compelling.
Now to the romance- for me, this is how you do a will they won't they story. As the series progresses, even with the obstacles, the age difference, it becomes obvious that these two people deeply care about eachother. The disruptions don't feel forced, the reconciliations are beautifully paced, and the leads have good chemistry and are charming on their own. Even their quirks, flaws and the misscommunication that results from them are well crafted and believable.
The supernatural part is entertaining but downplayed. Each murder is interesting and engaging because you get the backstory, the motive, the reactions from the relatives. It's Ghost whisperer, but better, because the overarching plot is beautifully unraveled and the romance has plenty of time to develop. As a fan of good old supernatural (but more towards eerie than gory possesions), I am satisfied.
Finally, I fell in love with each and every character, which is rare. Through the course of the first season, I even grew fond of her hystrionic mother ( who suffers some character development in the second season). As a Dostoievski fan, the decor and the costumes were pure nostalgia for a time I haven't experienced (even with the historical inaccuracies and all). All I want is to find the soundtrack to this series, untill they hopefully bring us the third season.
