In Hollywood, there’s a colloquialism so prevalent it’s as likely to be spotted in its native habitat (advertising copy) as it is to be used by its intended targets (influencers and the like): “hilarious and heartfelt” — as in, “The new Netflix series, ‘A Man on the Inside,’ is hilarious and heartfelt.” The maxim’s roll-off-the-tongue simplicity makes it an easy one to let slip when you’re a PR rep writing plot synopsis after plot synopsis (which are all meant to sound the same anyway) or even a reporter writing blurb after blurb. But “hilarious and heartfelt” doesn’t really mean “hilarious and heartfelt” — at least, not to people in the biz who’ve co-opted its alliterative, widely applicable power. Instead, it often means the opposite: that whatever is being described as “hilarious and heartfelt” is actually “not funny” and “probably a bummer.”

Most of the time, describing a show as something a whole family can enjoy, from age 8 to 88, means a whole family will be fine having it on while they look at their phones. People like looking at their phones, so this is a thriving TV genre, encompassing the likes of Dancing With the Stars, The Floor and Judge Steve Harvey. But with Thanksgiving imminent, and thus the likelihood that you’re going to be gathering near a TV with loved ones of wide-ranging ages, Netflix has made a show the whole family can actually enjoy. A Man On The Inside is a caper, a buddy comedy and a meditation on grief, and pulls off all three effortlessly.

For today’s Gen-z kids, The Big Bang Theory and Friends might be some of the shows that they feel are iconic. But long back in the 80s, aired a show that changed the definition of sitcoms and grew a massive fan base across the US.
Yes, we are talking about NBC’s Cheers, which ran successfully from 1982 until its series finale in 1993. Critically acclaimed and loved by many during its original run, the series is one of the best sitcoms.
Cheers is hilarious, intelligent, fast-paced, heartfelt, peopled by unforgettable characters, and consistently good. The story revolves around a Boston bar, owned by Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former relief pitcher, and has several other main characters, who either work in the bar or visit it regularly.
Decades later after its final run, let’s take a look at where some of the Cheers‘ major cast members are now!

As “Reykjavik,” a look at a critical summit between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that helped determine the fate of the two superpowers, begins shooting in Iceland this week, the drama has brought on Hope Davis, Branka Katic and Aya Cash. They join the Sk Global feature, which has already lined up an impressive ensemble that includes Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan, Jared Harris as Mikhail Gorbachev and J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz.
Davis, who appeared on Broadway opposite Daniels in “God of Carnage,” will star as Nancy Reagan. Katic is set to play Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the Soviet leader, and Cash has been tapped to portray a young journalist covering the Reykjavik Summit. It’s hard to imagine a time when Ted Danson wasn’t on TV. After all, he spent a whopping 11 seasons playing Sam Malone on Cheers, six years as Dr. John Becker on Becker, and, more recently, took on the part of a 6,000-foot tall tentacled fire demon who's taken on the form of a 6-foot-2 silver fox in The Good Place.
Not to mention the fact that he regularly popped up on Curb Your Enthusiasm, effortlessly inhabiting what was perhaps his greatest role to date: Ted Danson.
Now Danson has a brand new show coming out: A Man on the Inside. While it may sound like the title of a self-help book written by Tobias Fünke, it’s actually a new Netflix comedy that reteams Danson with The Good Place and Parks and Recreation producer Mike Schur.

Jason Schwartzman’s been a totemic figure so long it can be hard to separate player from part. Beginning as idol of teenage rebellion Max Fischer in Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore,” the actor’s spent a quarter-century inhabiting numerous types — stuffy writers, disgruntled husbands, mourning widows, drug addicts, a bumping Pi on HBO’s perpetually ill-appreciated “Bored to Death” — that have doubled as progressions of professional versatility and real-life aging.
Like Jean-Pierre Léaud before him, Schwartzman is seemingly now cast for the weight his name and visage can carry. This sequence continues with “Between the Temples,” which finds him playing Benjamin, a cantor whose mourning for his deceased wife finds focus in sessions with Carla (Carol Kane), a fellow widow who decides now’s high time to receive the Bat Mitzvah she missed 60-or-so years prior. A brilliantly shaped scriptment from Nathan Silver and C. Mason Wells makes ideal scene...

“Only Murders in the Building” will be getting even more murder-solvers with a meta twist.
The upcoming fourth season of the beloved Hulu series will star Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Eva Longoria as the film adaptation versions of Steve Martin’s Charles, Martin Short’s Oliver, and Selena Gomez’s Mabel, respectively.
Levy, Galifianakis, and Longoria were all previously announced as cast members, but there roles are now confirmed. All actors are playing versions of themselves.
Of course, Levy, Galifianakis, and Longoria are no strangers to TV. Levy led Emmy-winning viral series “Schitts Creek,” while Longoria appeared in the iconically camp ABC drama “Desperate Housewives.” Galifianakis starred alongside Ted Danson in the cult HBO comedy “Bored to Death,” another show that combined elements of comedy and murder mystery.

In an unexpected turn in the streaming sector, Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly discussing the possibility of licensing some of its original HBO content to competitor Netflix. The strategy diverges from the industry’s recent streaming strategy of hoarding content for their own direct-to-consumer services.
It’s not the first time HBO has explored syndication, with “Curb Your Enthusiasm” airing on TV Guide Network and “Entourage” on Spike. And from 2014 to 2018, HBO licensed shows to Amazon’s Prime Video. Still, it’s been years since an HBO original was available on a service not owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
The roster of HBO shows potentially heading to Netflix remains undisclosed, but according to recent reports, it includes high-profile titles such as “Insecure.” Until an actual deal is struck, we can only speculate on the HBO shows that align well with Netflix’s content catalog. The NBC comedy Cheers was Ted Danson’s big break. He’s been on several hit shows since, but still, 11 years on Cheers is hard to top. Fortunately, Danson said he never felt typecast by Sam Malone after Cheers ended. That’s thanks in part to two big reasons.

Danson was a guest on the Wtf with Marc Maron podcast on March 11, 2018 promoting The Good Place Season 2. Addressing his storied career, Danson attributed his creative freedom to two sources.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” has emerged as a certified blockbuster hit — but the epic fantasy series must do battle in Season 2 without co-showrunner, director and executive producer Miguel Sapochnik.
Sapochnik is stepping away from the series, but entering into a first-look deal with HBO to develop new projects and will remain listed as an executive producer for the remainder of the series. Fellow Season 1 co-showrunner and EP Ryan Condal will assume the top creative role and continue consulting with co-creator and author George R.R. Martin. “Game of Thrones” veteran director Alan Taylor will be brought on as a director and EP for multiple Season 2 episodes.
“Working within the ‘Thrones’ universe for the past few years has been an honor and a privilege, especially spending the last two with the amazing cast and crew of ‘House of the Dragon,’” Sapochnik said in a statement. “I...

We had the opportunity to chat with Martin Gero, who, together with his partner and collaborator, Brendan Gall, created Keep Breathing, currently stealing time from Netflix binge-watchers.
Mr. Gero is also the man behind bringing Quantum Leap back to NBC, and we chatted about both shows and much more in great detail.
Enjoy!
You're a really busy man.
Yeah. I like to work.
I can tell.
It's a privilege to do what we do, so I'll take the opportunities when I get them.
Blindspot was such a huge success.
Yeah.
What challenges have you faced creating new content in its wake?
Well, I just don't want to repeat myself mostly. I mean, I've been tremendously lucky to have such a weird disparate career. I started in really hard sci-fi and then did like strange -- we called it like a "noir-otic" -- with Bored to Death and then like a really trashy,...

Exclusive: Fox has put in development Red Widow, a one-hour CIA thriller based on Alma Katsu’s forthcoming book, which Sarah Condon is executive producing. A search is underway for a writer to pen the adaptation via an open writing assignment.
In Red Widow, the lives of two female CIA agents become intertwined around an internal threat to the Agency’s Russia Division as they navigate the mostly male world of intelligence. The novel captures the kind of thorny, manipulative behind-the-scenes machinations that take place inside intelligence headquarters that only a true insider would know.
Author and former Nsa/CIA senior intelligence analyst Katsu, whose book Red Widow is set for release March 23 by Putnam, is attached as an executive producer. Fox Entertainment is the studio. The project is not related to the 2013 ABC series Red Widow or the Dutch drama on which it was based.

To request every show feature Ted Danson getting outrageously stoned may be an unreasonable ask, but it would indisputably be for the betterment of TV. “Bored to Death” proved as much, building Danson’s series-long arc around his magazine editor’s penchant for good pot, and altered-state shenanigans served up intermittent joy in “The Good Place.” That Danson himself delights in the drug is nearly irrelevant; as fun as it is to share in the actor’s obvious glee over everyday minutiae and unjustified paranoia, the nuanced thespian still crafts each onscreen bake as carefully and methodically as an aspiring Star Baker. Every high is different, which makes each new performance an additive experience to his canon of cannabis, rather than merely a nostalgic reflection on past highlights.

At the movies, January is the traditional dumping ground for box office bombs that the studios are eager to bury and forget. Unfortunately, NBC’s new sitcom Mr. Mayor — debuting this Thursday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c; I’ve seen the first two episodes — feels like the TV equivalent of that. It’s a real shame, because the combination of Ted Danson in a starring role and Tina Fey behind the scenes should be an easy slam dunk. But instead, the whole endeavor feels half-hearted and half-baked, with a thin concept and a glaring lack of laughs.

It appears that the fall release date of The Many Saints of Newark, HBO’s long-anticipated prequel TV movie to its transformative peak television smash, The Sopranos, was born under a bad sign, taking shape during an era in which the film and television industry—and everything else in the civilized world—has been derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Consequently, the movie has just met the nowadays-inevitable fate of having its release date shifted back.
The Many Saints of Newark is now scheduled to premiere on HBO on Friday, March 12, 2021. The move represents a nearly six-month shift from its previously scheduled debut on September 25 of this year. Exclusive: Tami Sagher has joined SNL alums Molly Shannon and Vanessa Bayer in Bayer’s Showtime comedy pilot Big Deal.
Co-created and executive produced by Bayer and Jeremy Beiler (Saturday Night Live), Big Deal is a grounded comedy in which Bayer plays Joanna, a character inspired by her own past. Joanna overcame childhood leukemia to achieve her lifelong dream of landing a job as a successful home shopping channel host. Shannon will star as Jackie, the charismatic, popular host at the network.
Writer-producer-actress Sagher will play Tami, an offbeat backstage producer, a role that was written with her in mind, thus the character name. Sagher will appear as a series regular if the pilot is picked up to series.
Jessi Klein serves as showrunner and executive produce along with Michael Showalter, who will direct, as well as Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle and Jordana Mollick of Semi-Formal. Showtime is the studio.
