In its continued bid to create more premium content for the Latin American market under its Onza Americas banner, Madrid-based Onza Entertainment – behind such hit series as “The Department of Time” and a collaborator on Dopamine’s historical drama “Hernan” – is developing political drama series “Sattva.”
Created by Spanish actor Ruben Sanz (“El Dragon”) and written by Int’l Emmy-nominated Luis Gamboa (“Promesas de Campaña”), the series is conceived as a transatlantic production between Mexico and Spain.
Onza is presenting “Saatva” at Iberseries & Platino Industria’s new Co-Production & Financing Forum on Sept. 28.
The abundance of streaming platforms – and their insatiable demand for content – that allowed shows to circulate across more territories has encouraged more content production, said Valentina Pozzoli, Onza’s director of development & international co-productions. The success of such Spanish-language series as “Money Heist,” (“Casa de Papel”) “Dark Desire” (“Oscuro Deseo”) and “Elite” has also been a motivating factor.

Netflix has been in the original programming business for a whole decade now, as Feb. 6, 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the premiere of “Lilyhammer” on the streaming service. On Sunday, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos released an essay commemorating the anniversary and reflecting on the company’s roots in content for international audiences.
“Looking back, ‘Lilyhammer’ was perhaps an unorthodox choice for our first show. But it worked because it was a deeply local story that we could share with the world,” Sarandos wrote. “The jokes and references worked locally and the more universal themes of the shows traveled perfectly. Since then, we’ve seen so many great local stories resonate with people in other countries and from other cultures: shows and films set anywhere and told in any language.”
Although Netflix’s premiere Hollywood shake-up came with “House of Cards,” which the streamer ordered as a series before picking up “Lilyhammer,...

Netflix’s ties with Latin America and the region’s much-loved telenovela format go back to the company’s first steps in original production outside of the U.S., when the streamer picked, as its first international original, Gary “Gaz” Alazraki’s “Club of Crows,” a soccer-themed soapy drama about a dynastic sports ownership family.
Since then, there have been several further incursions into the world of the novela, including some of the streamer’s most popular ever series such as “Who Killed Sara,” currently filming its third and final season, and “Café con Aroma de Mujer,” “Rebelde” and “The Queen of Flow,” the top three non-English language series on Netflix globally at the time of this article’s publishing, sure to be joined by the second season of “Dark Desire” when it launches on Feb. 2.

Until Pantelion Films unleashed “Instructions Not Included” in the U.S., grossing $44.47 million there in 2013, no other distributor had really cracked the Latino market.
Over the next eight years, Pantelion has produced the biggest U.S.-Mexico double-market comedy movie franchise, “No Manches Frida” and handled the first-run release in the U.S. of six of the 10 biggest Mexican hits of all time.
Now, however, leading Latino studio Pantelion Films is raising the ante.
Partnered by sister company Pantaya, the premium streaming Spanish-language service, from August this year Pantelion has signed talent deals with Maite Perroni (“Dark Desire”) and Mauricio Ochmann (“El Chema”) and co-development and production accords with Elefantec Global and El Estudio, The Lift and Traziende Films.
Simultaneously, with The Lift Entertainment, it has gone into production in Mexico on “La Usurpadora, The Musical,” a modern musical movie makeover of Televisa’s 1998 telenovela classic that punched humungous ratings and was exported to 125 countries.

Netflix has spoken a fair bit about the rise in demand for international content during the pandemic (viewing was up 50% to non-English language titles in 2020), and now the streamer has revealed the top 10 destinations its U.S. subscribers visited most through their screens in the past year.
Now, this being Netlflix, it disclosed little in the way of hard viewing numbers. Instead, the findings are drawn from country of origin appearances in Netflix’s daily Top 10 lists of most-viewed shows and films. Netflix collected the data, which is not ranked, from February 2020.
So, the so-called “most traveled to” destinations were:

Spanish-language genre pic The Platform, set in a nightmarish vertical-style prison, tops the list of most-watched movies after being released in March this year, when lockdowns first hit America. Netflix does not tend to reveal specific viewing statistics, and these charts do not include solid numbers, but the company did previously note this one was watched by 56 million households in its first four weeks of release, making the title one of its most watched original movies ever.

Exclusive: Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s newly-crowned head of global TV, has underlined the streamer’s commitment to British content in some of her first remarks after being elevated to her new role last month.
Bajaria oversees Netflix’s vast slate of original series from across the world and, after setting her top team on Tuesday, she told Deadline that the UK will remain a huge market under her watch.
Netflix co-ceo Reed Hastings has said that the company spent £400M ($520M) in the UK last year, making it the “biggest place that Netflix develops content outside the U.S.” Bajaria does not expect this level of spending to fall.
“We don’t break it out publicly by US vs outside, but I don’t see our investment in the UK changing in the near term,” she said over an email Q&a. “The UK is one of the best places...

A month and a half after being elevated to Head of Global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria has reorganized the streamer’s U.S. TV operation with an increased focus on tentpole shows and getting the most from mega overall deals. The realignment also enhances the portfolios of some executives on her international bench.
The U.S. streamlining includes the closing of the Young Adult/Family series department whose duties will be absorbed by the Drama and Comedy teams. The consolidation has led to the departures of fewer than 10 members of the series content team below VP level. Brian Wright, who ran the YA/family group, will now head a new Overall Deals department, while Jinny Howe and Renate Radford will lead the drama team. Meanwhile, Peter Friedlander, who led the Genre & Thrillers subsection of the drama department, will now head a new Spectacle/Event programming department that will be separate from drama and comedy.

Streamer making “good and careful progress returning to production” around the world.
Netflix fell short of its own forecasts and analysts’ estimates in the third quarter, adding 2.2m global subscribers to reach 195.15m through September 30.
The streaming titan expected the slow-down during the July-September period and had forecast 2.5m as it expected people to get used to indoor pandemic life without access to cinemas.
The first half of 2020 generated a record 26.7m new global members as lockdowns and cinema closures came into effect. The first nine months of this year has brought 28.1m new members, which is more than 27.8m...

Most of the chatter about Netflix’s success has been focused on Enola Holmes recently, as the mystery caper breaks records around the world, and is surely set to become one of the streaming service’s most popular original movies ever. But let’s not forget that there’s no shortage of bingeable TV shows also available at the push of a button.
Now that we’ve entered October, the numbers have been crunched for last month, and they reveal that Lucifer was the most popular series on Netflix in September. That’s especially impressive when you consider that the first half of season 5 dropped six weeks ago, so there must be a whole lot of new fans checking it out from the start for it to retain the number one position.
The runner-up, meanwhile, was Cobra Kai, which has surprised a lot of people with how popular the small...

July was another terrific month for Netflix as far as TV goes – and movies, too, actually – with tons of great new series and returning favorites for subscribers to binge. Undoubtedly, most of the attention and buzz was directed at debuting shows like Warrior Nun and Cursed, among others. But it turns out that the most-watched TV series was actually an underrated sci-fi gem which hails from Germany.
Yes, the third season of Dark was the most-watched show globally this month. Following close behind though are the two aforementioned originals, while Zac Efron’s new travel series also saw lots of love.
For the full list, see below:
Dark Warrior Nun Cursed Unsolved Mysteries Dark Desire Snowpiercer Down to Earth with Zac Efron All For Love It’s Okay to Not Be Okay The Business of Drugs
So, not too many surprises there. Perhaps except Dark. While it’s critically acclaimed...

Though far from the busiest week in terms of fresh additions on Netflix, the streaming site still managed to add 13 new movies, 10 new TV shows and even a new stand-up special to its library over the past 7 days, bringing with it a few highlights that viewers have been digging.
On the movies front, Fatal Affair has rocketed to the top of the Netflix charts, currently sitting as the most popular film on the platform. The thriller might be receiving brutal reviews from critics, but that’s certainly not hurting its reputation with subscribers.
Elsewhere, Pride & Prejudice and The Notebook have been keeping fans of romance busy, with both dramas being firmly established favorites of the genre that hold up well even so long after their initial release.
But perhaps the most notable new addition this week is Cursed, the fantasy series starring Katherine Langford, who headlines a female-driven take...

Netflix is on a roll this month and is absolutely oozing with quality content to devour. Such classic films as the boxing drama Million Dollar Baby and the Tom Hanks romance Sleepless in Seattle have already made their appearance on the platform, and mega-hit The Umbrella Academy will be seeing its second season drop at the end of the month. There was a short drought for a few days, but yesterday brought a couple new things to check out, including the Spanish thriller Dark Desire, which will likely appeal to fans of shows such as You.
If that’s not enough for you, however, today is seeing a handful of new movies and series to dig into as well. At least a few of them should appeal to your tastes, too, so get ready to add some more stuff to your likely already loaded list of content to binge.

Netflix is usually pretty good about keeping their service full to the brim with content for subscribers to tune in to. Just this month has seen the addition of 2015’s Poltergeist remake, Charlize Theron action flick The Old Guard, boxing drama Million Dollar Baby, and an often overlooked Tom Hanks film called Cloud Atlas, among many, many others. It’s been a busy month for the platform, then, and there’s still plenty to come. In fact, today marks the arrival of six brand new things for you to check out.
If you’re a big fan of the extraordinarily popular show You, you may be interested in catching the first season of Spanish thriller series Dark Desire, as it’s been said to deal with similar dramatic elements. The show follows main character Alma as she shares a passionate weekend with someone that ends in a tragic event, leading...
