The series is an expansion of a video sketch created and performed by the seven writers for UCLA's annual talent show, Spring Sing, in 2007. The writers were all members of Company, the non-competing group tasked with providing entertainment between competing acts of Spring Sing.
Richie Root, who plays Elijah Jefferson in Season 2, originally auditioned for the role of Josh Morgan.
