Halle Berry could still sometimes find it hard to get her passion projects made even after winning her Oscar. One such project took Berry years to finally release in theaters.

Frankie & Alice finally made it to the big screen after a decade-long journey. The 2010 feature was based on a real-life story, and saw Berry playing a stripper with multiple personalities. In a resurfaced interview with Essence, Berry confided that she was so inspired by the source material that she couldn’t let it go. Even though there were times when it didn’t seem the film might ever come to fruition.
“For this woman to have survived this, and not just survived it, but she is now teaching at one of the most reputable universities in the country—she’s revered,” Berry said. “She has...

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

At one point in “Seberg,” the new film about actress/activist Jean Seberg, a journalist asks the young star why she thinks so many people became obsessed with her after seeing “Breathless.” For the film’s screenwriters, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, it stemmed from that classic French New Wave film but it became an obsession upon learning of Seberg’s involvement with the Black Panther Party and her subsequent investigation by the FBI. As Waterhouse observes in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby, Seberg was “so quintessentially American and yet she fits into that cool Parisian world as well. She’s just got this energy which is very, very difficult to define.” Watch the video interview with Shrapnel and Waterhouse above.

So has Halle Berry been struck with the Oscar curse, or just been making mostly bad choices? Ever since winning for "Monster's Ball" a decade ago, she did the franchise thing in "Die Another Day" and the 'X-Men' trilogy of films and between those, she lined up a string of stinkers including "Catwoman," "Gothika" and "Perfect Strangers." Her attempted return to Oscar a couple of years ago, "Frankie & Alice," barely got a release and while "Things We Lost In The Fire" was a brief return to something substantial, this spring she toplines the dreadful looking shark movie "Dark Tide." So a thriller that takes place in a call center? That's right up her alley these days it seems.
The actress has signed on to the former Joel Schumacher project (never a good sign) "The Hive" to be directed by "The Machinist" helmer Brad Anderson. Penned by Rich D'Ovidio ("Thir13en Ghosts,...

As the country pumped up for Superbowl weekend, “The Roommate” had a successful weekend opening with $15.3 million despite being tackled and slammed by critics. The film has Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) assigned with psychotic killer Rebecca (Leighton Meester) as a roommate. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a 9 percent critics rating, which is the third lowest of the year—barely above “Frankie and Alice” and “Waiting for Forever.” The other opening film was James Cameron’s “Sanctum,” which swam to the second position with $9.2 million. The thriller is about a group of cave divers seeking an exit after mother nature trapped them inside the earth. For the rest of the top five, “No Strings Attached” earned $8.4 million, a drop of 37.4 percent from the previous weekend to the third position. Oscar nominated “The King’s Speech” is still going very strong in fourth place with $8.3 million, a decrease of 24.9 percent.

Chicago – The stunning looks of Halle Berry is always the lead whenever the entertainment media considers her. But in “Frankie and Alice,” she reminds us of why her career continues to flourish and why she is a Best Actress Oscar winner.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Berry plays a complex character ridden with the psychological burden of multiple personalities. Based on a true story, this is the type of situation that as a film could be exploited or trivialized. To the credit of the production and especially Halle Berry, it’s handled with sensitivity.
Berry portrays Frankie, a stripper in Los Angeles in 1973. There is something odd about her, as she is liable to pontificate on several bizarre angles of the profession. After picking up a guy named Cliff (Adrian Holmes), she has a mental breakdown in his presence. She switches from the personality of a streetwise stripper to a bigoted society lady, blathering...

Probably the most renowned Swedish actor working onscreen today (next to the venerable Max von Sydow), Stellan Skarsgård is a reliably solid presence in any film, big or small. And he's done it all, from obscure, harsh dramas like Juanita Wilson's recent 'As If I Am Not There' to big, fluffy musicals like 'Mamma Mia!' (granted, that was his only fluffy musical). A major part of the American movie-going public knows him as Bootstrap Bill from the last two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies; a smaller segment recognizes him mainly from Lars von Trier films, and then there's Verner Vollstedt, his crazily overbearing director character on HBO's 'Entourage.'
Opening Friday is 'Frankie and Alice,' in which Skarsgård plays a psychiatrist to Halle Berry's multiple personalities. Most recently he gave a wonderful performance in dark Norwegian (redundant?) crime...

Halle Berry's denim cutoffs were so short her pockets were peeking out the bottom during a trip to a dentist's office in La with Olivier Martinez yesterday. The actress has been taking care of important business this week, including checking out potential schools for Nahla in between romantic outings with Olivier. The happy couple has been enjoying each other's company at art shows and on his 45th birthday. Halle didn't score an Oscar nomination for her work in Frankie and Alice, though she will be there as a presenter during the big show. The past best actress winner could have more award season fodder added to her resume since Aretha Franklin is adamant that Halle should portray her in a biopic despite Berry's protests that she can't sing. Who's more likely to win for Best Actor, Colin Firth or James Franco? It'd be cool for James, him being a host and all. —Galactic Interactive, via Twitter Bookmakers are going with The King's Speech star Firth on this one. Per Bookmaker.com, the odds go like this: Firth at 91 percent, Franco 19, Jesse Eisenberg 18, Jeff Bridges 16, and Javier Bardem at 19 percent. I've been fielding a ton of questions after the Academy Award nominations today. Here are the best ones: Why were there no black nominees for major acting awards this year? —Fed Up, via the inbox Halle Berry apparently did a bang-up job in Frankie and Alice, playing a go-go dancer...

I think everybody woke up at 8:30 eager for one thing today: using the bathroom. But After that, I'm sure they opened up their computers and checked out the Oscar nominations, right? So how well did we at Tmp do on our predictions? Any major upsets? Well, you can find out after the jump.
And we're after the jump! Here's the complete list of nominees:
Best Picture
Winter’s Bone
True Grit
Toy Story 3
The Social Network
127 Hours
The King’s Speech
The Kids Are All Right
Inception
The Fighter
Black Swan
Quick Commentary: Yup, no surprises here. In fact, we predicted all of these pretty much correct. Well, except The Town. But to be honest...it was only because I forgot about True Grit. What a glaring oversight, me. Come on! Still, super pleased Toy Story 3 got the nom it deserved.

Tis the season to give people tiny gold statues. Whether you have realized it or not, Oscar season is upon us all. It's one of the biggest events in the movie industry because, regardless of the worth that these trophies have on swaying the average moviegoer to watch a film, it certainly does wonders to ones resume. So stand up and prepare your acceptance speech; we're going on a journey. We will explore the best and brightest that this year had to offer, from Oscar bait to crowdpleasing blockbusters, we got em' all. And, if we're lucky, we may just be able pluck up the noble few who will be lucky enough to grace the historic Kodak Theater. From Best Picture to Best SFX, we're running down who we think may find themselves with Oscar gold come February 27. Without furthur ado, here's Tmp's predictions of the 83rd Annual Academy Award nominees and winners!

Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez looked like they were sharing a private joke leaving an La art show yesterday. Olivier's been in town for the past week since Halle and Nahla welcomed him to the West Coast with a special happy birthday surprise. The pair stepped out for a lunch date before the Golden Globes Awards, though Halle decided to walk the red carpet solo in a short and sleek black gown. The best actress nominee didn't take home an award for her role in Frankie and Alice but she was all smiles arriving at the star studded afterparties. Her relationship with Olivier seems to going strong as is her ex-husband's, Eric Benet, who recently announced his engagement to girlfriend of three years, Manuela Testolini. View Slideshow ›...

On Saturday afternoon, I had the opportunity to spend a half-hour at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills with Hailee Steinfeld, the 14-year-old best supporting actress SAG Award nominee/Oscar hopeful for her performance as a young firebrand in Ethan Coen and Joel Coen’s “True Grit” (Paramount, 12/22, PG-13, trailer), which ranks among the greatest big screen debuts of all-time. The night before we met, we both attended the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, which are determined by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I am a member. I had voted for Steinfeld in the category of “best young actor/actress,” and sure enough she won, prompting a loud ovation from the audience and a charming speech from her. When I walked into her hotel suite for our interview the next day, she was still on a high from the excitement of attending her first awards show — and winning her...

Nicole Kidman is a 43-year-old wife and mother of four who also happens to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world and one of the most respected actresses of her generation. Therefore, as you can imagine, it was a great privilege and thrill for me to be granted a half-hour one-on-one interview with her last Saturday — the day between the Critics Choice and the Golden Globe awards, both of which she attended as a best actress nominee for her performance as a mother grieving over the death of her child in the critically-acclaimed low-budget indie “Rabbit Hole” (Lionsgate, 12/17, PG-13, trailer) — and pick her brain about a wide-range of topics. We met on the second floor of Siren Studios, a sparsely decorated building used by professional photographers for photoshoots like the one that Kidman was to be a subject of following our conversation. The corner where we sat...

This past Sunday night’s 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards was a fantastic night for The Social Network, Glee, and The Kids are Alright, but aside from the notable win by Jim Parsons for Best Actor in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical, sci-fi / fantasy nominees went home empty-handed.
How could Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Red, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and AMC’s The Walking Dead not have won anything? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association definitely had their eyes on more reality-based entertainment as exhibited by the number of The Social Network wins and Al Pacino and Claire Danes’ wins for their portrayals of suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian and autistic, livestock scientist Temple Grandin respectively.
Show host, Ricky Gervais’ mean-spirited style of hosting “pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far.” Aside from gape-mouthed “wow, did Ricky really just say that?” moments throughout the show, it was still...

There were few surprise at the 68th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday night as awards season frontrunner The Social Network took home four awards including “Best Motion Picture – Drama.”
The David Fincher-directed film also won “Best Director,” “Best Original Score” for Trent Reznor’s musical contributions, and “Best Screenplay” for Aaron Sorkin’s brilliant adaptation.
The Kids Are All Right topped “Best Comedy or Musical” along with some much-needed recognition for Annette Benning in the specialty “Best Actress” category. Oscar frontrunner Natalie Portman picked up the dramatic counterpart for her turn in Black Swan.
The Globes aren’t exactly the best bellwether for Oscar glory, but the wins seemed to line up rather predictably with awards season favorites as the night progressed. Also not surprising were the scathing punchlines flying from returning host Ricky Gervais.

Ricky Gervais hosts/terrorizes the 68th Annual Golden Globes Awards
(all photos Getty Images)
About a third of the way into last night's Golden Globe Awards, presenter Robert Downey Jr. had this to say: "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I just wanna say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"
Boy, did he hit the nail on the head! The mean-spirited and mildly sinister undertones were all coming from Ricky Gervais, who really seemed to be a bully as he mercilessly abused really obvious targets all night: Charlie Sheen, how crappy The Tourist was, Tim Allen's thin resume, all the airbrushing required for the ladies of Sex and the City 2. "Girls, we know how old you are! I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza!"

Natalie Portman won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in 'Black Swan.'
During her acceptance speech, Natalie thanked fiance Benjamin Millepied and made clear that off-screen he is nothing like his 'Black Swan' character, who said he "wouldn't sleep" with Natalie's character.
"It's not true!" she said. "He totally wants to sleep with me!"

The Social Network slaughtered the competition at last night’s Golden Globes Awards Ceremony – taking him the gongs for Best Picture (Drama), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), Best Director (David Fincher) & Best Score (Reznor & Ross). There’s now very little in the way of the Facebook creation movie about friendship, betrayal and the world’s youngest billionaire from taking home the majority of the Oscars next month.
Winning Best Picture Musical or Comedy was the family drama The Kids Are All Right (the only respectable film in that category) and veteran Annette Benning took home the Best Actress Award for that genre and film. Natalie Portman, of course, won Best Actress Motion Drama for Black Swan and will beat Benning to the Oscar next month.
Colin Firth won Best Actor in Motion Picture Drama for The King’s Speech whilst it was nice to see Paul Giamatti winning Best Actor Musical...

“The Social Network” gained a few more friends Sunday night. “The Facebook movie” won Best Picture – Drama at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, while helmer David Fincher claimed Best Director and Aaron Sorkin accepted Best Screenplay.
There were virtually no big surprises in the movie categories, as favorites Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) and Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) prevailed in the lead acting catgories, while “The Kids Are All Right” took home Best Picture – Comedy.
The Globes were a mirror image of Friday night’s Critics Choice Movie Awards, with familiar faces picking up all the major awards. In the other major categories, Melissa Leo took home Best Supporting Actress and Christian Bale Best Supporting Actor, both for “The Fighter.”
In the other Comedy or Musical categories, future Oscar contender Annette Bening won for ”Kids” while out-of-nowhere “Barney’s Version” helped deliver Paul Giamatti a win. But aside from Bening,...

Awards darling The Social Network continues to rack up the big wins, and this time, there are huge honors from the Hollywood Foreign Press. The movie, which is one giant commentary on a generation, has poised itself to be a huge winner as the Oscars roll around soon. David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin both got honored while the film itself won Best Motion Picture, Drama. On the TV side, Glee, in only it’s second season, got three big wins with Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer locking up best supporting roles while the series claimed Best Comedy or Musical. Other award winners were Toy Story 3, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth and Christian Bale, while on the TV side, Laura Linney and Boardwalk Empire got some great awards attention.

Well, it was quite a night and to be honest I was impressed with the show's ability to remain mildly entertaining even though we all pretty much wrote off the legitimacy of many of the nominees, particularly in the Comedy/Musical categories. If you missed any and/or all of the show I did a play-by-play live-blog of it right here and I never skipped a beat.
It didn't take long for Ricky Gervais to get into the swing of things, turning his opening monologue and any introductory moment he had to roast the celebs rather than remain in the background, but that's what he was hired to do. If you want to remain interesting when you nominate The Tourist for three Golden Globes then you need to light a fire somewhere.

Hey gang! Here we have the list of winners for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards! I'm not one to get that incredibly excited about the Golden Globe Awards. I'm more in the Academy Awards, but there was a great list of winners tonight, and they give us an idea of what we might end up seeing at the Academy Awards this year.
I really can't complain about any of the winners. I thought every movie, TV show, Actor and Actress that won an award was well deserved. I was most happy to see Christian Bale take the Best Supporting Actor award, Natalie Portman take home Best Actress, Colin Firth take Best Actor, and The Social Network win for Best Picture. I was rooting for them.
Check out the full list of winners below and tell us what you think!
