Palestinian journalist Bisan Atef Owda has won the Emmy for Outstanding Hard News Feature: Short Form for her ongoing project “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive.” The win comes 5 days after a campaign to get her nomination at the 2024 News and Documentary Emmy Awards rescinded was rejected by the Television Academy.

The project documents Owda’s daily life in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war that has devastated the region since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 of last year. She previously won a Peabody Award for “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive” earlier this year.

At the News & Documentary Emmys, Owda was nominated alongside media outlet Aj+. But soon after it was announced, her nomination drew outrage from Jewish nonprofit Creative Community for Peace, which accused her of being a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (Pflp), a United States-designated terrorist organization.

“It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive,” the Aj+ news story from Palestinian journalist/activist/filmmaker Bisan Owda that sparked controversy after earning a News and Documentary Emmy nomination earlier this year, has now won that Emmy.

The report won the outstanding hard news feature story—short form category on Wednesday during the news portion of the two-day 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmys, held by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Romantic comedy icon Meg Ryan said she loves the challenges that directing a feature film offers up and that since stepping behind the camera for both 2015’s Ithaca and 2023’s What Happens Later, it’s helped her to look at acting in a different light.

“I understand acting I think more now because of that,” Ryan told an audience at the Sarajevo Film Festival. “I think, as an actor, you’re a soloist in an orchestra. You don’t see the big picture. Your one small job is to play your emotional instrument and know yourself well and be available to your feelings, you know, and to get out of your way and try not to be too intellectual about expressing them.”

When Director Kevin Smith heard he was going to Direct Bruce Willis in the 2010 comedy Cop Out, he was delighted. Bruce Willis was a childhood hero of Smith’s, who grew up watching the Dire Hard actor in the 1985 show Moonlighting. However, the director later came to regret working with Willis, describing the experience as soul-crushing.

After Smith was tapped to direct Bruce Willis he gushed on MySpace how he had worked on “a flick that’d reveal a heretofore unrealised dream I’d unwittingly harbored since I first watched David Addison limbo in the Moonlighting Detective Agency offices 20 years prior.”

However, in an interview with Cinemabled, Smith claimed that Willis was difficult to work with and alleged the actor was intentionally messing up his scenes. Smith recalled Bruce Willis chastising him after he tried to direct him in a scene.

The medium of animation has been getting quite the boost in recent years, with more and more high-budget offerings making their way to streaming services and theatres. There has been a slew of great shows in recent years that leveraged the medium of animation to tell unique stories, such as Blue Eye Samurai, Arcane, and even X-Men ’97.

However, there are also some great shows of the past and even some that were released much more recently, that their respective studios saw fit to cut short, given that they were not able to meet the goals that were set for them, whether it be viewership or merchandise sale.

The Sega Master System is a peculiar part of video game history. It was middling compared to its contemporaries. Not a major success but not the most laughable failure. Not the greatest console of the time but not the worst either. On paper, it was technically superior to the Nes, but it was also inferior where it counted (like library and third-party support). A huge step up from the Sg-1000, but completely overshadowed by the Sega Genesis.

There was little tangible identity to the Master System. It was the other console you could get, and that was it. It lacked the energy of the Nes or the attitude of the Genesis. It was simply run-of-the-mill. Yet…it found life beyond expectations. In its own unorthodox way, it lived on far longer than many realized.
