Producers and distributors heading to Las Vegas for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Nov. 5-10, are betting big that indie action is primed for a comeback.
The AFM was built on action movies — the leading independent film bazaar launched in 1981 at the start of a decade defined by the cinematic stylings of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. But in recent markets, with the headline-grabbing success of breakouts like Neon’s Longlegs and Cineverse’s Terrifier 3, action has taken a backseat to horror.
There will be scares-a-plenty at AFM 2024, but many of the market’s buzziest projects sit squarely in the action space. Even a few that don’t star Liam Neeson, Gerard Butler, Jason Statham or Nic Cage. How buyers respond to this new generation of would-be action stars — Daisy Ridley, Amber Midthunder, Alan Ritchson — will determine who...

One of the very best Halloween episodes ever made is Community’s “Epidemiology.” The Season Two outing found the Greendale gang transforming into a horde of zombies after Dean Pelton mistakenly served them tacos full of classified government mystery meat.
The concept of introducing the horror of zombies (not to mention the horror of Abba) was pretty out there for the show, especially so early in its run. Luckily, creator Dan Harmon had a trick for how to measure the realism of the Community-verse. Back in 2011, Harmon told The A.V. Club that the Halloween episode was “further than we’d ever gone.” And he determined this by imagining how prominently each Community episode would be reported in the news. “The litmus test I used to prove that was to run through every episode in both seasons and picture myself reading the events that take place in the story in the local paper,...

The Last of Us is arguably one of the most successful first-party franchises operating under the PlayStation Studios umbrella. The gaming community was seemingly blown away by what the game developers made years ago, delivering a video game that rivals the storytelling qualities of a huge blockbuster, while keeping things relatable and grounded.
The first game’s success pretty much guaranteed a sequel and in 2020, Part 2 was released. Multiple leaks before launch and a few creative choices drove a wedge between fans and the developers, but there is a way to make it all work.

It sucks that Blue Bloods is ending. I’d rather have more of the original than the perfect Blue Bloods spinoff.
Still, if I can’t have more Reagan family dinners, Frank arguing with the mayor (and the Dream Team!), and everything else that makes Blue Bloods so special, a spinoff is the next best thing.
I’ve thought about this a lot, and the one that makes the most sense is a prequel about Frank’s younger years.
(CBS (Screenshot)) The Perfect Blue Bloods Spinoff Would Star A Middle-Aged Frank
Frank had a life before Blue Bloods began.
He was once a far younger man who was in the same stage of life as Danny when the series started: married with young children whom he had to raise properly while working full-time as a cop.

It can’t be denied that as far as the old-time action heroes go, Steven Seagal doesn’t get much respect these days. A whole lot has been written about Steven Seagal’s behaviour off-screen (much of it by us), and I’m not going to rehash it all here, but suffice it to say there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of goodwill left over for the former ponytailed action hero.
While many would say he’s become a parody of himself in recent years, one shouldn’t forget that, at the start of his career, Seagal was ultra-popular. His Aikido moves, plus his tall, almost lanky figure and quiet demeanour made him unique among action heroes of the day. And, if you look at his filmography, his first five movies are really good as far as action flicks of the era go. Everything else? Well, not so much,...

“For me, this was a continuation of what I’ve been doing for a while,” said British director Mike Leigh when talking about his latest feature, Hard Truths, at Deadline’s Contenders London on Saturday. “I did a play in Australia about Greek Australians. I did a play in London about Jews. I did a film in Northern Ireland about Catholics and Protestants. I’ve made films about posh, upper-class people and different kinds of working-class people. For me, it’s about looking at people and society and life and the way we are – all of us.”
Leigh, and his Hard Truths stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Michele Austin, spoke at length about the importance of exploring Black characters without using tropes and stereotypes. The film, which marks Leigh’s first contemporary project since 2010’s Another Year, follows Pansy (Jean-Baptiste) an increasingly unmoored London housewife who takes out the frustrations of...

Palestinian journalist Bisan Atef Owda has won the Emmy for Outstanding Hard News Feature: Short Form for her ongoing project “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive.” The win comes 5 days after a campaign to get her nomination at the 2024 News and Documentary Emmy Awards rescinded was rejected by the Television Academy.
The project documents Owda’s daily life in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war that has devastated the region since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 of last year. She previously won a Peabody Award for “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive” earlier this year.
At the News & Documentary Emmys, Owda was nominated alongside media outlet Aj+. But soon after it was announced, her nomination drew outrage from Jewish nonprofit Creative Community for Peace, which accused her of being a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (Pflp), a United States-designated terrorist organization.

The music industry faced a major blow when Linkin Park’s lead vocalist Chester Bennington passed away in 2017, following which the rock band went on an indefinite hiatus. But a couple of weeks ago, the band announced that they’re officially making a comeback after seven years. Interestingly, they also announced a new vocalist for the group, who would be stepping in to perform Bennington’s parts during their concerts.

In Hard Truths, veteran British filmmaker Mike Leigh plunges us into the complex, messy world of an ordinary London family. Released in 2023, the film tells the story of Pansy Deacon, a woman battling internal demons that constantly explode outwards in rage against everyone around her. Played with raw intensity by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Pansy provides an unforgettable lead character – and one we come to understand despite her unlikability.
Through Pansy and her relationships with sister Chantelle and others close to her, Leigh contemplates what gives some people happiness while leaving others sunk in sadness. He does this by taking a non-judgmental look at real human flaws and frailties, revealing hard truths in a way that feels deeply compassionate. Thanks to outstanding performances and subtle direction, Hard Truths peels back the layers of its characters to challenge assumptions while keeping us deeply engaged.

The Last of Us is one of the most iconic stories ever told in a video game and HBO was up to the task of adapting it into a live-action television series. Naughty Dog struck gold with the simple plot about Joel escorting Ellie throughout the remnants of America to find a cure to save mankind and restore order to the world. The first season covered the first game with a few creative twists and changes; however, adapting the controversial sequel is much more complicated.
The live-action show can make up for the shortcomings of The Last of Us Part 2. Image Credit: HBO
Director Neil Druckmann became ambitious and crafted a much more complex story focusing on the consequences of rage and violence in Part 2. Ellie takes center stage and the gaming community has mixed feelings learning Joel was swept under the rug, and perhaps the HBO adaptation can succeed where Naughty Dog failed.

Christian Bale worked alongside actor Casey Affleck in the 2013 feature Out of the Furnace. What Affleck thought might’ve been just another acting job turned out to be a life-changing opportunity thanks to his co-star.

Affleck’s 2013 feature Out of the Furnace might’ve breathed new life into him. He played Bale’s younger brother in the mystery crime thriller, which seemed to remind him of what he enjoyed about acting in the first place.
Like his older brother Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck strived to become an actor from a young age. Although he found considerable success in the field, he didn’t consider it very rewarding work for a few years. The financial benefits of his acting career didn’t compensate for the satisfaction that he was seeking in the business.

Mike Leigh is nothing if not an expert at conceiving (in conjunction with talented actors) a certain kind of larger-than-life character. Well, larger-than-life within the context of a realist drama. Think of Johnny in Naked, the revolting and terminally ranting man, or Poppy in Happy-Go-Lucky, a young woman perpetually optimistic to the point of threatening her own safety. They are not necessarily the people you meet every day, but they articulate the very real worlds that Leigh creates, often as forms of social criticism.
Hard Truths introduces the newest character in this canon: Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptise). In the pantheon of unpleasant screen heroines, Pansy Deacon more than holds her own. Played by a ferocious Marianne Jean-Baptiste, the perpetually harried and hostile protagonist of Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths spews her venom on everyone she encounters — from family members to furniture store employees, and all manner of unlucky folks in between.

One might consider Lady Gaga and Queen’s Brian May artists in completely different spheres of music. Despite this, one of Gaga’s hits wouldn’t be the same without May’s talent. After the two collaborated, May revealed what he thought about Gaga as a person.
Lady Gaga cried when she got to work with Queen’s Brian May
When people think of Gaga, they think of her as a pop star. Despite this, she has dabbled in many genres, including rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, electronica, and country music. Her first big foray into country was the power ballad “You and I.” It has the middle-American feel of a country track combined with the stomp of an early Queen single. The Queen influence was no accident.
According to Gigwise, May played guitar on that track. “I fell to the floor crying and laughing when I found out that I...

Secrets and Lies star Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman prone to raging tirades against her family, in the trailer for Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths that dropped ahead of a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
“Why are you so angry? Why can’t you enjoy life,” Pansy’s sister, played by Michele Austin, asks at one point in the teaser trailer. “I don’t know!” Jean-Baptiste’s character shoots back.
But Leigh’s latest film, a drama about family and the thorny ties that bind us, suggests with the trailer that a lifetime of hurt and hardship has Pansy wracked with fear and emotional afflictions and attempting a halting reconciliation with her long-suffering sister.

Romantic comedy icon Meg Ryan said she loves the challenges that directing a feature film offers up and that since stepping behind the camera for both 2015’s Ithaca and 2023’s What Happens Later, it’s helped her to look at acting in a different light.
“I understand acting I think more now because of that,” Ryan told an audience at the Sarajevo Film Festival. “I think, as an actor, you’re a soloist in an orchestra. You don’t see the big picture. Your one small job is to play your emotional instrument and know yourself well and be available to your feelings, you know, and to get out of your way and try not to be too intellectual about expressing them.”
Since being a director, said Ryan, she’s learned that “other actors I’ve worked with have a different process.”

Kevin Smith Once Said Working With Bruce Willis Was “Soul-Crushing”. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Director Kevin Smith heard he was going to Direct Bruce Willis in the 2010 comedy Cop Out, he was delighted. Bruce Willis was a childhood hero of Smith’s, who grew up watching the Dire Hard actor in the 1985 show Moonlighting. However, the director later came to regret working with Willis, describing the experience as soul-crushing.
After Smith was tapped to direct Bruce Willis he gushed on MySpace how he had worked on “a flick that’d reveal a heretofore unrealised dream I’d unwittingly harbored since I first watched David Addison limbo in the Moonlighting Detective Agency offices 20 years prior.”
However, in an interview with Cinemabled, Smith claimed that Willis was difficult to work with and alleged the actor was intentionally messing up his scenes. Smith recalled Bruce Willis chastising him after he tried to direct him in a scene.

A down-on-his-luck coach or mentor assembling a bunch of underdogs and taking them to glory has to be the most common sports film template. Then we have these self-searching adventure films where one individual or a group takes a journey somewhere in search of purpose. Hard Miles, directed by R.J. Daniel Hanna, happens to be a mix of both of these kinds. Naturally, it appears to be conventional and familiar, but that doesn’t mean it’s not rewarding. In many ways, this genre itself is like a comforting cheeseburger. If it’s done right, it’s always going to work, and it certainly doesn’t matter if you’ve had it thousands of times before. This film is a profound example of that. It is, obviously, inspired by this real person, Greg Townsend, and his incredible story. He’s been on a killing spree where he always targets women and leaves behind a gruesome signature move—he cuts out their tongues. That’s his twisted way of getting revenge. There’s this girl named Kelly, and her mother is convinced that she’s been taken and killed by this Diablo killer. But wait! Is that really what happened? Or is there something else going on? Can her mom figure it all out? And what about the killer’s motive? Why does he haunt these...

HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, confirm that the new live-action DC Comics adaptation “Lanterns”, reportedly based on the 1970's "Hard-Traveling Heroes" comic book story arc, is a straight-to-series order of eight episodes, following two ‘intergalactic cop Lanterns' as they are lured into a dark, earth-based mystery:
“…’Hal Jordan’ is a former fighter pilot who works for ‘Ferris Aircraft’ as a test pilot, a member and occasionally leader of an intergalactic police force called the ‘Green Lantern Corps’.
“His powers derive from his ‘power ring’ and ‘Green Lantern’ battery, which in the hands of someone capable of overcoming great fear…
“…allows the user to channel their will power into creating fantastic constructs.
“Jordan uses this power to fly, even through the vacuum of space; to create shields, swords and lasers; and to construct his Green Lantern costume…
“..which protects his secret identity in his civilian life on Earth.

The Sega Master System is a peculiar part of video game history. It was middling compared to its contemporaries. Not a major success but not the most laughable failure. Not the greatest console of the time but not the worst either. On paper, it was technically superior to the Nes, but it was also inferior where it counted (like library and third-party support). A huge step up from the Sg-1000, but completely overshadowed by the Sega Genesis.
There was little tangible identity to the Master System. It was the other console you could get, and that was it. It lacked the energy of the Nes or the attitude of the Genesis. It was simply run-of-the-mill. Yet…it found life beyond expectations. In its own unorthodox way, it lived on far longer than many realized.
What games truly defined Sega’s second console through the years? Let’s take a look.
