- In a colorful yet bizarre world, the employees at a small firm dedicated to making its customers smile discover that their jobs are rarely as simple as they seem.
- At the office of Smiling Friends, a company dedicated to bringing happiness and making people smile, two of the employees, Pim and Charlie, are watching a television show that consists solely of a strange-looking character dancing against a black background. Charlie, annoyed, asks Pim if they can watch something else, but Pim shushes him and insists the show is about to get good. Alan, another employee, is kneeling behind the fridge, and Charlie asks him what he's doing. It is revealed that Alan is setting a mouse trap using broccoli as bait, and he explains he thinks there might be a mouse in the office, because his precious piece of cheese has gone missing. He suspiciously asks Charlie and Pim if they took it, which Charlie denies. Pim disappointedly tells Charlie that he missed an important moment on the TV show, in which the character does a spin, which Pim explains was the whole reason he was showing Charlie the show in the first place. Suddenly, an alarm goes off, summoning Charlie and Pim to their boss's office.
In the boss's office, Charlie asks the boss if they have received a job, which the boss confirms, but states they caught him in the middle of something and asks if they mind watching someone eat. The two employees say that they do not mind, and the boss begins to breastfeed a small creature (who is apparently his son) in a slightly disturbing manner. He explains that they received a call from a mother concerned about her son who was been "a bit mopey lately". After giving the two the address and making Charlie and Pim awkwardly watch him continue to breastfeed his child for a minute, the two agree to head over and help the child smile.
At their client's house, Charlie rings the doorbell, and Pim loudly exclaims how excited he is, shouting about how he loves kids. Charlie says not to say that so loudly as the door is answered by an elderly woman. She asks if the two are the Smiling Friends, to which they confirm and head inside. The woman leads the two to her son Desmond's bedroom, and when they walk inside, they are faced with a messy room with little but a mattress in it, and an overweight, disheveled-looking middle-aged man holding a gun to his head. The two try to talk him down, and Pim asks him what is wrong. Desmond explains that his life is not going very well, that his wife and kids have left him, and that his dog died from a broken heart the previous year, and that he intends to kill himself. In shock, Charlie pulls Pim to the side and explains he thinks Desmond is a lost cause, saying they should leave. Pim disagrees, saying they've never given up on a job so far, and tell Desmond that if they help him, he'll have a smile on his face by the end of the day. Desmond agrees to accept their help, but says that if they can't help him, he will shoot himself and make Pim and Charlie watch. Pim celebrates, albeit slightly put off by Desmond's comment.
Back at the Smiling Friends office, Alan is counting paper clips, and asks another employee, Glep, if he took a paper clip, as there is one less than the last time he counted, to which Glep replies indignantly in gibberish. Suddenly, a loud snap and a screech is heard, and Alan realized his mouse trap has gone off. However, he sees that the trap is empty, with a trail of blood leading behind the refrigerator. Alan moves the fridge, finding a giant hole in the wall behind it, and climbs through, coming across a man using a computer inside of the walls of the office. He awkwardly asks the man if he saw a mouse run by, causing the man quickly attempts to cover the screen of the computer with his hands, saying he didn't see anything. He adds that Alan should knock the next time he enters someone's place, but Alan replies that he probably shouldn't be living in the office walls to begin with and moves on to look for the mouse.
Meanwhile, Pim has taken Desmond (who is still holding the gun to his head) to meet his relatives in an attempt to show him one of the reasons life is worth living, spending time with your family. Unfortunately, Pim's family is extremely dysfunctional and does nothing to improve Desmond's mood. Pim introduces Demond to his cousin, Graham Nelly, who he claims is good at skateboarding, but it is revealed Graham's skill is actually with a fingerboard toy instead and that he has forgotten how to do any tricks with it. Pim's sister, Amy, calls him stupid, and Pim tries to introduce Desmond to her as well, saying they don't always get along but love each other, to which Amy responds that she hates Pim and doesn't love him in any way. Pim's parents proceed to argue, as his father is watching TV in another room instead of sitting and eating dinner with the family. Charlie sarcastically tells Pim that their attempt to cheer up Desmond was going really well, just as Amy's boyfriend vomits all over his plate, apologizing profusely. Desmond asks how the visit is supposed to make him not want to kill himself, and Pim replies that he hadn't visited home since Christmas and forgot about the family tension, but follows it up by stating that friends also make life worth living.
Pim, Charlie and Desmond attend a house party next, with Pim excitedly saying that another great part of life is making new friends, and that anyone at the party could be a potential new friend. He attempts to make friends with a random stranger at the party, who gets angry, telling Pim not to touch him and rudely asks why he's even at the party, calling him old and saying he should go home to his family. Pim insists he's not that old, but Charlie replies saying that he is getting kind of old, saying they're all getting older and that their best years are probably behind them, and that it is what it is, to which Desmond agrees. Desmond declares he's going to kill himself now and begins to pull the trigger on his gun, but Pim frantically stops him, saying he knows the perfect place to cheer Desmond up.
The trio arrives at Dave Land, an amusement park themed after a nondescript man named Dave who is stated to be the park's creator. Pim insists that he always goes to the park to cheer himself up, and points out the numerous attractions the park offers, all of which are modeled after Dave. He says the group should go on the roller coaster due to the short line, and a montage plays of the three visiting Dave Land's various attractions, with Desmond still holding the gun to his head the entire time.
Back at the office, Alan is making his way through a crawlspace underneath the building, still searching for the mouse. He sees something darting around in the shadows, and manages to corner it, revealing a small, purple creature holding his piece of cheese and missing a hand, presumably from the mouse trap. The creature (later established as being called a Bliblie), cowers in the corner in fear, whimpering and crying, as Alan remarks that he isn't a mouse at all, attempting to reassure it and gently trying to coax it into giving back his cheese, but the Bliblie stabs him through the finger with the missing paper clip from earlier and runs off. Alan gives chase, following it over to a large purple sac hanging from the ceiling, which the Bliblie runs inside. Alan pounds on the sac, asking for his cheese back, but it throbs and tears open, releasing a wave of Bliblies that sweeps Alan away and floods the Smiling Friends office. The boss overhears the commotion and simply tells the employees to knock it off, before returning to a video call he was previously taking part in.
At Dave Land, Pim, Charlie, and Desmond are leaving for the day, with Pim remarking that the park was really fun and asking Desmond what he thought and if he feels any better. Desmond replies that he does, and Pim begins to celebrate the completion of their job, but Desmond continues to say that the feeling was only temporary and that it ended, like good things always do. Pim retorts that nice things can't last forever, and Desmond says that that is his point, questioning if the best parts of life are just finding ways to distract yourself from the realities of the world. He says that he can ride roller coasters, meet new friends, and spend time with his family the whole day, but none of that changes the fact that the sun is eventually going to explode, making everything they did pointless. Pim pauses, taken aback, and seemingly enters a catatonic state in response to processing what Desmond said. Charlie tries to snap Pim out of it by asking if there way anything else he wanted to show Desmond, but receives no response, causing Desmond to ask if Charlie wanted to show him anything. Charlie looks around, unable to find anything of note and simply points to an ant, asking Desmond his thoughts on it. Desmond replies that it is kind of cool, but doesn't make him feel any better. Charlie responds that he figured it wouldn't work and tells Desmond to come back to the office to sign some paperwork that certifies they failed to make him smile, and they leave the park and head back, with Charlie carrying the motionless Pim.
Charlie, Desmond, and the still-unresponsive Pim arrive at the Smiling Friends office, only to find it swarming with Bliblies, who have crucified Alan in the front room. Alan screams that he just wanted his cheese as the Bliblies stab him with spears and throw garbage at him. Charlie and Desmond look on in horror, and the Bliblie that Alan was chasing kills another one by stabbing it with the paper clip, still holding onto the piece of cheese. The Bliblie notices the two and shrieks loudly, running at them, causing Desmond to rush forward, finally removing the gun from his temple and blowing the Bliblie's head off with an explosion of gore, causing the other Bliblies to stop and stare. Charlie reassures him that he had to kill the Bliblie and had no other choice, and Desmond remarks that doing so felt kind of good, and a smile finally forms on his face.
The shot of Desmond smiling cuts to a commercial playing on the TV in the office, featuring a now cheerful, healthy-looking, and well-dressed Desmond, who has started his own Bliblie extermination business called "Desmond's Bliblie Control", touting the many rather violent ways his service can deal with Bliblie infestations, stating they'll "kill them all for you". Charlie and Alan are shown watching the commercial, with Charlie remarking that he guesses that Desmond just needed to find his purpose in life. Alan agrees, happily remarking that he also got his cheese back, which he quickly eats. The two begin to laugh, and the shot zooms out to reveal the destroyed office kitchen, with much of the room in disarray, Bliblie corpses lying throughout the room, and blood smeared all over the walls as Glep cleans up the mess. Pim is shown sitting at the table as well, still catatonic, looking much more unkempt and withered, with a shot zooming in on him depicted in a hyper-realistic manner, contrasting with the art of the rest of the show. Suddenly, the character from the TV show at the beginning of the episode bursts from the TV, frantically waving and screaming "Hello, thank you for watching" repeatedly as Charlie and Alan panic, trying to figure out what to do with the strange being and arguing over who should deal with it.
