District Attorney J. Miller Leavy, who had prosecuted Caryl Chessman, sued the film's producers and distributor for $1,000,000 on the grounds that he was led to believe that he was appearing in a television documentary and also because only fragments of his filmed statements were used, thereby distorting the facts. Leavy was eventually awarded $50,000.
