Spike Lee was honored by his peers and associates Thursday as he became the 34th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award, given to a filmmaker or star who has achieved, and continues to achieve, great success in their career.
The honor, usually presented during a glitzy tribute dinner, had to go virtual this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but that didn’t stop Lee’s wide swath of admirers and colleagues from participating via Zoom and other means in the slickly produced and nicely assembled show that went off without a hitch this evening. Hosted by Jodie Foster, who previously co-starred with Denzel Washington in 2006’s Inside Man — Lee tonight recalled it as one of his personal favorites — the tribute included an innovative feature showing virtual conversations between pairs of various past artists from all fields who have worked with Lee, focusing on a specific film on which they participated.

After the first Marvel-less year at the box office since 2009, 2021 has plenty of superhero content in store — including the debut of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series for Disney+, the genre-bending “WandaVision.”

We regret to report that actor John Richardson has passed away this week, just two weeks before what would have been his 87th birthday.
John found fame in the 1960s via films such as Mario Bava's Black Sunday and Hammer Film's remakes of She and One Million Years B.C., wherein he co-starred alongside many of the most beautiful actresses of the era, such as Ursula Andress, Barbara Steele and Raquel Welch who famously bemoaned, on first being introduced to John, that her new leading man was more beautiful than she was!
John's role in One Million Years B.C. (1966), Ray Harryhausen's prehistoric animated cult classic, led to a long relationship with his co-star Martine Beswick and a move to Hollywood, where he landed roles in big budget Hollywood productions such as Vincente Minnelli's On A Clear Day You...

Like all things, the MTV Film & TV Awards pivoted to a different kind of ceremony this year because of the pandemic and opted to air a retrospective that spotlighted the Greatest of All Time (Goat) in TV and film from the 1980s until the present.
Hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, the ceremony continued the grand tradition of off-center and offbeat awards that included categories such as “Legendary Lip Lock”, “Heartbreaking Break-Up” and “Hero for the Ages”. There were no nominees announced prior. All winners were announced during the socially distanced ceremony which included appearances from Neve Campbell, Lily Collins and Derek Hough.
The late, great Chadwick Boseman was honored by his Avengers co-stars Don Cheadle and Robert Downey Jr. with the “Hero for the Ages” trophy while Wonder Woman herself Gal Gadot received the “She-Ro” award. Kevin Hart also took the Goat award for “Comedy Giant”. In addition, Sarah Michelle Gellar...

Inspired by a true story about a guy’s online blog detailing his relationship with a girl, “My Sassy Girl” was an absolute phenomenon in Korea, and in much of Asia in general. The pinnacle of Korean rom-com movies and copied over and over, it never really invented the game in the first place. However, it did perfect it.
“My Sassy Girl” follows the story of the mild-mannered Kyun-woo (played by Cha Tae-hyun), a 25-year old student who essentially saves the life of the unnamed “sassy” girl (played by Jun Ji-hyun). Despite the absolutely insane behavior of the girl now and then, Kyun-woo soon feels some sense of responsibility for her and ends up falling in love in the process. An unlikely love story that gender-bends a lot of regular stereotypes, and does so quite well. As mentioned, it is based on a series of blogposts from...

1999 was the year that M. Night Shyamalan burst onto the scene out of nowhere and instantly established himself as one of the most exciting talents in Hollywood after writing the screenplay for massively popular family movie and box office smash hit Stuart Little, as well as performing uncredited rewrites on the script for beloved teen rom-com She’s All That. Oh, and he also directed The Sixth Sense.
The supernatural chiller was one of the year’s defining movies, earning over $670 million at the box office and going on to scoop six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, not to mention it had a shocking twist ending that would go on to dominate popular culture for months and launch a thousand parodies.

With what was supposed to be the summer movie season now just another relic of this pandemic-blasted year, and the rest of 2020’s major film releases in a continuing state of flux, it’s important to note that there has still been a fairly steady stream of new films coming out, some in limited theatrical release but others largely available via video on demand and streaming services.
With that in mind, and with the customary “opening weekend” a rather fluid and ambiguous term as well, below is a rundown of films we’ve caught in the past month, along with information on where you can find and watch them. Some are good, some not so much, but your mileage may vary for each. The important thing to know is that movies are still coming out–just not always in the ways we expect.

If any big name franchise had the opportunity to sign up Keanu Reeves for a major role, you’d better believe that they’d grab it with two hands. After all, both of cinema’s premiere shared universes seem to be in a constant battle for his services, with Marvel and DC regularly in talks with the beloved actor. And even though Constantine has found itself back in the headlines as the movie celebrates its fifteenth anniversary at the same time speculation surrounding a sequel has restarted, Marvel might have gotten the jump on their perennial rivals this time.

Truth be told, the first time I watched She Dies Tomorrow, I felt utterly devastated afterward, but I felt lost in my thoughts about the film. A second viewing of She Dies Tomorrow really put all the puzzle pieces in place for me, though, and I think that, upon review, writer/director Amy Seimetz has crafted a beautifully told and bold cinematic rumination on mortality that lingers in your psyche for some time. The imagery is unforgettable, the performances across the board are top-notch, and while She Dies Tomorrow isn’t a film that I’d necessarily categorize as horror, the material is often haunting and alarming all the same.
She Dies Tomorrow first introduces us to Amy (Kate Lyn Sheil), a woman transfixed on something just outside of our viewpoint, but the pained look of her visage tells us everything we need to know in those opening moments. Amy is slowly unraveling,...

The Legend of Korra (also known as Avatar: The Legend of Korra) premiered on Nickelodeon on April 14, 2012 and ran for four seasons through October of 2014. The series is set within the same universe as Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the next Avatar in the Avatar cycle after Aang: Korra, a seventeen-year-old girl from the Southern Water Tribe.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has been a big success for Netflix. The reboot of the 1980s property quickly proved a hit with its target audience and critics alike, with the first, third, fourth and fifth seasons all scoring a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer (and the second is at 85%). Granted, there are those who have angrily decried the more cartoony character designs and LGBTQ representation, but it’s probably best to ignore grown men who get worked up into a fury over a cartoon aimed at young girls.
The finale of the show wrapped things up with a battle against Horde Prime, who is only defeated after Adora and Catra finally confess their feelings for one another as their love gives them the power to defeat the mind-controlling bad guy. Fans thought they knocked it out of the park and are now demanding more. As such, She-Ra and...

Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo have gained a reputation for being the two biggest goofballs in the McU cast, with both the Spider-Man and Hulk actors infamously dropping major spoilers for their Marvel movies over the years. Ruffalo, for instance, accidentally livestreamed the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok on social media. And in this latest example of their antics, which Holland has just shared on his Instagram, the British star accidentally crashes Ruffalo’s interview on the set of Avengers: Endgame.
The video sees Holland enjoying some downtime on set with friend and fellow actor Harrison Osterfield. Tom then decides to entertain himself while running through the corridors as if Osterfield is chasing him. What he doesn’t know though is that Ruffalo is in the middle of an interview just around the corner.
“Sorry @markruffalo for ruining your interview,” Holland writes in his caption. “I’m not sure why [sic] we were doing but please enjoy!

I can’t tell you I knew anything about the character known as She-Ra or her princesses of power. And, really, neither did “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” creator Noelle Stevenson at the outset. Stevenson admitted she was born too early to engage with the headdress-wearing, cape-rocking Greek goddess, who became successful in her own right after being spun-off from the popular hero known as He-Man in 1985.
But despite never engaging with the property in the moment, Stevenson says She-Ra was “baked into the zeitgeist.” So when she started working on her first show, the animated “Wander Over Yonder,” she found herself working with a group of “Masters of the Universe” fans, putting this character, whom Stevenson only knew by name, into her orbit. The place that it holds in our imaginations, even with people who didn’t grow up with it fascinated her, Stevenson told IndieWire. Upon...

The Tanner-Fuller-Gibblers have always been a little extra, but they truly outdid themselves in Fuller House‘s series finale, giving us a triple wedding, an emotional surprise and a dramatic fake-out all in one day.
Let’s start with that first one: When the She-Wolf Pack’s wedding venue is suddenly seized on their big day — one of several curses caused by Jimmy seeing Stephanie after midnight — the ladies opt for a more intimate, Diy ceremony in their backyard. The whole thing turns out picture perfect, of course, prompting Joey to ask, “Man, if DJ can put this together in one day,...

What’s next for Spider-Man? Well, after two blockbuster hits, a threequel has been fast-tracked – pandemic-related delays to filming notwithstanding. But it seems Marvel have big plans for expanding the franchise, too, with callbacks to previous versions of the character hot on their list.
According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk shows are in development, the Justice League Snyder Cut is coming to HBO Max and the Inhumans are being rebooted, all of which were correct – Tom Holland is pushing for Tobey Maguire to play the McU’s Uncle Ben in a flashback or two at some point in the Spider-Man franchise. Though Marvel/Sony are reportedly planning to do a live-action Spider-Verse with Tobey returning as Spidey as well, he can still show up as Uncle Ben if he wants, given that this Ben would be from the main...

Despite Thanos dramatically dying (twice!) in Avengers: Endgame, we continually hear gossip that Marvel Studios are eager to bring him back. From a commercial point of view, this makes sense. He was just named the most popular villain of the last 50 years of cinema and, given that he’s mainly CGI, Josh Brolin could continue to play him for many years to come. But when it comes to storytelling, well, my perspective has long been that bringing back ‘dead’ characters is a good indication that you’ve run out of ideas.
That makes it a little worrying that we’ve now heard from our source – the same ones who told us about the She-Hulk TV show, that the Justice League Snyder Cut is coming to HBO Max and that Taskmaster would be the villain of Black Widow – that Marvel Studios wants to bring Thanos back for a Secret Wars movie.

Science above all. In fantasy/science fiction stories, this philosophy tends to be the domain of evil masterminds, people who don’t understand or don’t care about the people who might be hurt when dangerous experiments go wrong. She-Ra’s “geek princess” Entrapta embraces this trope at times, joining the evil Horde out of curiosity more than malice, but also has an important role to play in the show’s emphasis on friendship and connection. Strong storytelling in She-Ra Season 5 shows how her enthusiasm and ambition are both her strengths and her weaknesses.
Here are the keys to Entrapta’s character and how she changes in She-Ra Season 5…

There’s plenty of content to watch across every major streaming platform already, something everyone has certainly appreciated during the ongoing pandemic. But who would dare complain about even more movies and shows to check out? Lucky you – Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus are all getting new stuff to watch this weekend, and some of it is absolutely worth your time.
Over on Netflix, you’ll definitely want to check out District 9, a film that delicately handles being both a compelling sci-fi action flick and a political statement that tackles xenophobia and racism. If you’re needing something a bit more light-hearted though, there’s always the David Spade comedy, The Wrong Missy, which is sitting at a pretty rough 31% on Rotten Tomatoes but is nevertheless doing exceptionally well with audiences.

With so many people across the world forced to stay indoors due to the Coronavirus pandemic, demand for Netflix has surged.
Never before has the online streamer been so popular, and to keep its subscribers entertained, the Big N has today rolled out a slew of exciting additions to its lineup of content.
That means from May 15th, Netflix subscribers will be able to access season 6 of Madam Secretary, all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and sci-fi gem District 9. The latter initially debuted back in 2009 as Neill Blomkamp’s feature film, who would later go on to helm Elysium and Chappie. Blomkamp was then tipped to helm Alien 5 – a direct sequel to the classic Aliens – but sadly, despite a collection of awesome concept art emerging onto the interwebs, said continuation never came to pass and is “unlikely” to happen, after all.

Note: This She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Season 5 spoiler-free review is based on the first ten of thirteen episodes of the season.
She-Ra Season 5 is an absolute joy to behold. Every single thing about it clicks together and works beautifully. The story flows between fun adventures to deeply serious ruminations on identity and abandonment… then back to hilarious jokes! This is the show She-Ra was building toward. I really dug the first four seasons of the show but it sometimes felt a bit off. Whether it was slow starts or the needless splitting up of seasons (not the creators’ fault), it often felt like the show just needed to take one step from being an already great show to becoming something beyond fantastic.
Whatever the case, She-Ra Season 5 makes that critical step. As I watched these ten episodes I could not get over how perfect it all was. Every episode deepened these characters bonds.

Bruce Banner underwent quite the transformation in Avengers: Endgame, as both of his personalities merged into the so-called Smart Hulk. The problem was that this major moment for the character happened off-screen, so we never got to see how Smart Hulk was created. Fans have been lamenting this fact for the past year, and it seems Mark Ruffalo agrees with them as he feels that this storyline could’ve filled its own movie. In fact, he even pitched the idea to Marvel brass.
While speaking to host Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the Green Goliath star got talking about Smart Hulk – or “Bulk,” as he hilariously calls this version of the hero – and his pitch for a solo film for the brawny brainbox.
“That should have been its own movie, that’s what I’m pitching actually, that section of time, like how did Banner become the Bulk? You know?...

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is coming to an end. The fifth season of the critically beloved and fan favorite series is wrapping up its story in a fifth and final season. After the events of season 4 fans were left with many questions. What will Adora do without the sword? How will Horde Prime try and lay siege to everything? Will Catra and Adora ever get their friendship back together? How will Glimmer work with Catra?
We don’t know have those answers but we do have a new trailer which gives us some key hints for the future. You can watch that trailer below.
Did we see Adora looking at a projection of the original She-Ra? Is Adora summoning the sword at the end? Or is it something else?

We’ve known for some time that the original six stars of Marvel’s juggernaut franchise enjoyed a strong friendship on and off set – as evidenced by the by-now famous Avengers group tattoo – though it remains to be seen whether they’ll still be best buds in 32 years’ time.

Despite being one of the original members of the Avengers as well as a beloved character among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the complicated rights issues with the Hulk mean that Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner will likely never get the chance to headline his own solo movie. That being said, the studio are free to use the big guy however they see fit as a supporting character, and all the signs point to his next appearance being part of the She-Hulk show on Disney Plus.
With the limited series not expected until 2020, there’s plenty of time to put all of the pieces into place, including the casting of the title heroine.
