When he isn't playing diabolical baddies or rugged mavericks, he can often be found portraying bellow-y bearded bruisers, be they Beowulf in 2005's "Beowulf & Grendel" or, most famously, King Leonidas in "300."

Zack Snyder's 2006 film "300," based on the comic book by Frank Miller, tells a hyper-stylized and not-the-least-bit-historically-accurate version of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) wherein 300 Spartan soldiers managed to fend off anywhere from 120,000 to 300,000 soldiers of the Persian Empire for three full days. Both Miller's book and Snyder's film present the Spartans as teeth-gashing, testosterone-spitting, Spam-scented beefcake slabs comprised of nothing but pectoral muscles, testicles, and homophobia. They speak in "Join the Marines" recruiting slogans and disparage anything that's not at least 4000% more masculine than a two-ton bag of Tom Jones' chest hair.

Speaking of chest hair, none of the Spartans have any, happy to parade around their cartoonishly cut physiques as if they all possess a severe shirt allergy. Leading the charge is King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), a man who cannot help but add multiple exclamation marks after every sentence he speaks.

Starz has announced the movie and TV titles coming to the service in June. The Starz June 2024 schedule includes the season four premiere of Power Book II: Ghost.

On the film front, Bros, Ticket to Paradise, How I Learned to Fly (featuring Cliff “Method Man” Smith), Get On Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Billy Madison, Carlito’s Way, How High, Jarhead, Law Abiding Citizen, and several other notable titles join the Starz app this month.

Power Book II: Ghost Season 4

The fourth and final season of “Power Book II: Ghost” debuts on Friday, June 7, at midnight Et on the Starz app, which also coincides with the 10th Anniversary of “Power’s” debut on Starz.

After performing epically in quite a few romantic comedies until 2010 and winning the hearts of fangirls worldwide, Gerard Butler seems to have switched lanes permanently into the action genre. Well, he is acing it in that too, considering how the 54-year-old actor is once again reportedly all set to return to the big screens with Empire State, his next major action-thriller project.

But while he is still performing as brilliantly as ever in this respective genre, viewers can’t help but notice a similar pattern in a lot of Butler’s movies of the action/thriller/adventure themes. Gerard Butler’s Next Big Project Set to be Empire State?...

If there’s anything worse than a millionaire who fails to contribute anything meaningful to the world, it’s taking the fall for one who’s murdered and finding yourself in the crosshairs of thugs and criminals. Jason Statham is back in business with Lionsgate to star in the upcoming action-thriller Mutiny with Plane and Blood Father director Jean-Francois Richet at the helm.

Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning in September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.

In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.

Irby is coming off two hit shows that ended their runs in 2023, FX’s Mayans M.C. and HBO’s Barry.

In the Kurt Sutter and Elgin James-co-created motorcycle drama Mayans. M.C., Irby played the series regular role of Obispo ‘Bishop’ Losa across the show’s 5 seasons. The Sons of Anarchy spinoff follows the titular M.C. based in the fictional California border town of Santo Padre. Bishop held leadership positions including former Presidente and Vice Presidente of the club’s Santo Padre Charter. The show is connected to Soa via the character of Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), Bishop’s cousin.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss will star in David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers.” They join the previously announced Ben Stiller, who will play a work-obsessed man who travels to rural Ohio to look after his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident.

Heidecker will play a local deputy, Patterson has been cast as an orphan profiteer, Huss portrays an eccentric empty-nester millionaire and Cardellini takes on the role of a social worker who helps Stiller’s character on his journey to find a home for the boys. The film is based on a script by Leland Douglas and was developed by Rough House Pictures.

Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, Red Hour Films’ Stiller and John Lesher, and Rough House Pictures’ Nate Meyer are producing. Rivulet fully financed the film, which recently wrapped production outside of Cincinnati.

David Ayer’s The Beekeeper buzzes into theaters today, and to celebrate the occasion, the Suicide Squad director shared a new poster for the action film starring Jason Statham online. In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” Ayer directs from a script by Kurt Wimmer. While Statham is the star of the show, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons complete the primary cast.

Chad Stahelski and David Leitch's 2014 film "John Wick" instantly became totemic, casting a long shadow and impacting the way action filmmakers approached their craft. Over the past decade, we've seen the American action movie conform to that style, favoring hard-hitting hand-to-hand combat, more visually dynamic fight choreography, and longer shots that better highlight the action taking place (contrasted with the edit-a-fight-to-bits approach of Paul Greengrass's acolytes from the prior generation). "The Beekeeper," written by genre stalwart Kurt Wimmer and directed by David Ayer, adopts those elements as well — but it goes a step further than most "Wick" riffs and incorporates what really makes that franchise stand out: world-building. There's a unique mythology at play here, elevating the movie to a heightened reality beyond our own.

"Three... two... one... lift!" Netflix has unveiled the final "New Year's Day" trailer for the heist action comedy Lift, coming to Netflix to watch streaming in just a few weeks. This action thriller comedy is one of the first big releases on Netflix in 2024 (along with Society of the Snow). An international heist crew, led by Cyrus Whitaker, race to lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane while flying at 40,000 feet. It's from the same director as The Italian Job remake and Law Abiding Citizen, so it might actually be entertaining to watch. With Kevin Hart Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D'Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Jacob Batalon, Billy Magnussen, Viveik Kalra, Yun Jee Kim, Burn Gorman, Paul Anderson, plus Jean Reno and Sam Worthington. This doesn't look that bad, but it also but doesn't look that good either, like most of the expensive Netflix movies recently. Worth a watch? Hard to tell from just the trailers.

Director Kurt Wimmer‘s new take on Stephen King‘s horror novel Children of the Corn first arrived in theaters earlier this month, and up next it comes to Digital on March 21.

What about physical media, you ask? We’ve learned this week that Children of the Corn 2023 will be hitting Blu-ray on May 9, 2023, with Deleted Scenes included on the disc.

The new movie is the eleventh overall installment in the long-running franchise, and the first movie in the saga since John Gulager’s Children of the Corn: Runaway in 2018.

F. Gary Gray's 2009 police thriller "Law Abiding Citizen" is a goofy little potboiler with a fun premise. Gerard Butler plays a man named Clyde who witnessed his family murdered. The murderer, thanks to mishandled evidence and an indifferent legal system, received a light sentence. Years later, Clyde sets about an elaborate counter-plan to expose legal corruption and murder all the people who caused him pain. Even after Clyde is apprehended and put into prison, the murders continue on the outside. Jamie Foxx plays the lawyer who attempts to understand Clyde, the nature of his plan, and who his accomplices might be.

The twist at the end of "Law Abiding Citizen" is that Clyde has somehow constructed a series of tunnels leading in and out of his prison's solitary confinement cells. He has been sneaking out of prison in order...

Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer cooks pure popcorn. More accurately, in his own words, he builds powder kegs. He fills barrels with gunpowder, he lights the match, and then lets it all blow on the page. It's a formula that's led to Wimmer writing or co-writing hits such as "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake, "Salt," "Law Abiding Citizen," and "Street Kings."

As for his directing credits, he's the man behind gun kata in the cult action favorite, "Equilibrium." First up, Gravitas Ventures unleashes Wolf Garden via On Demand outlets today (February 28), being described by Gravitas as a “elevated horror picture in the tradition of It Follows.”

Written and Directed by Wayne David, Wolf Garden tells the blood-curdling story of William (Wayne David), a young man who disappears upon experiencing haunting visions of the woman he loves and a mysterious creature in the nearby woods.

Among the sixty screen acting roles Regina Hall has racked up over the last couple decades are appearances in four of the five films in the Scary Movie horror spoof franchise. Now The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Hall is returning to horror comedy territory, signing on to star in writer/director Jim Strouse’s Breitenbush.

The new movie will then arrive on demand and digital on March 21. Today, the trailer has debuted.

While streaming services war with each other, one that’s hanging out in the background and pleasing genre fans is Shudder. The horror site is a haven for fans of terrifying content. Recently, director Kurt Wimmer wrapped filming on a remake of Stephen King’s famous story-turned-movie, Children of the Corn. Deadline has learned that Shudder and Rlje Films has picked up the movie for their exclusive distribution.

The synopsis reads,

“Based upon the short story by the horror author, and adapted by Wimmer, Children of the Corn follows a 12 year old girl in Nebraska who is possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield. She recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.

HBO’s TV adaptation of beloved video game The Last of Us premieres on Jan. 15. Created by Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin, this story will follow the game storyline of Joel (Pedro Pascal) guiding 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through a virus-ridden wasteland towards hope. It’s probably gonna be awesome.

The other big original series this month is animated mystery comedy Velma. Brought to life by Mindy Kaling, this show will be all about Scooby-Doo’s bespectacled buddy Velma Dinkley. Jinkies indeed!

Amazon Prime Video has a host of new offerings to sift through in October. New to the streaming service this month is a brand new film from writer/director Lena Dunham, “Catherine Called Birdy” (available Oct. 7), as well as a pair of new release films from 2022 making their debut on the streaming service.

“The Northman,” the Alexander Skarsgard-fronted Viking saga, comes to Prime Video on Oct. 11 after first streaming on Peacock, and “Downton Abbey: A New Era” arrives on Oct. 28 (after also streaming first on Peacock).

In terms of new Prime Video TV shows, “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan present “The Peripheral” on Oct. 21. The futuristic series stars Chloe Grace Moretz and Jack Reynor and is based on the novel of the same name by William Gibson.

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.

The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.

The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.

October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.

That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.

Bryan Cranston and producer James Degus, via Moonshot Entertainment, are teaming up with Village Roadshow Television, to source, develop and produce content for all distribution platforms, the companies announced in a joint release on Tuesday.

As part of the partnership, Village Roadshow Television’s executive vice president, Alix Jaffe, will work closely with Cranston and Degus, as well as Steve Mosko, to push the content initiative forward.
