Broadway will honor the late actor Adrian Bailey, who died September 22 at the age of 67 following an at-home fall, by dimming the marquee lights of one theater from every theater owner on October 17.
“Over the years, Mr. Bailey has served as an inspiration not only due to his talented performances on Broadway and Touring Broadway stages, but also through his perseverance, positive attitude, and indomitable spirit,” said Jason Laks, Interim President of The Broadway League. “The outpouring of love from our community is a testament to that spirit. In losing Adrian Bailey, we have truly lost a bright light both on and off Broadway, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who loved him best.”
Bailey appeared in 15 Broadway productions, including his heralded 1976 debut in Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, before a tragic onstage accident in 2008 ended his performing career. Appearing in...

How much juice did Lucille Ball have in the late 1960s? While many of her contemporaries struggled to remain relevant as America seemed on the brink of a cultural and political revolution, the old-school Ball was still one of television's most reliable entertainers. "I Love Lucy," the paradigm-setting sitcom she created with her husband Desi Arnaz, was a syndication powerhouse. Five years after ending the series, she shook off the Broadway failure of 1960's "Wildcat" and scored another sitcom hit with "The Lucy Show." At the end of the series' sixth season, it was the second highest-rated show on television, but when Ball sold Desilu Productions to Gulf+Western in 1967, she decided to pull the plug.
Why? Because she didn't want to star in a show owned by someone else. So when "The Lucy Show" aired its final episode on March 11, 1968, Ball turned around and created "Here's Lucy," which premiered...

The 76th annual Tony Awards have already made history. For the first time, two of the acting nominees identify as non-binary: Harrison Ghee who is contending for lead actor in musical for “Some Like It Hot” and Alex Newell, vying for featured actor in a musical for “Shucked.” Their nominations have been warmly embraced. But 40 years ago, a history-making acceptance led to death threats.

Arthur P. Siccardi, a longtime Broadway production supervisor whose five-decade career included work on such notable original and revival stagings as Sweeney Todd, Whose Life is it Anyway?, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, The Heidi Chronicles and Sunset Boulevard, to name a few, died December 23 of complications from pneumonia. He was 89.
His death was announced by his son Drew Siccardi.
Born in Englewood, NJ, and raised in Fort Lee, Siccardi began his professional life as a minor league baseball pitcher for the Johnson City Cardinals from 1951-53. An employment offer to work as a show carpenter on the original national tour of Gypsy led to what would be his life’s work.
Siccardi established Arthur Siccardi Theatrical Services in 1975 at the suggestion of Michael Bennett, and he’d go on to work with such notable directors as Mike Nichols, Jerome Robbins, Tommy Tune, Gower Champion, Trevor Nunn and Michael Blakemore.

Georgia Engel, who earned two Emmy noms for playing Ted Baxter’s significant other Georgette Franklin on The Mary Tyler Moore and three consecutive for Everybody Loves Raymond, has died. She was 70. She died Friday in Princeton, NJ, her friend and executor John Quilty told The New York Times.
Engel joined The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1972 when it was a top 10 primetime series and would appear in nearly 60 episodes over its final five seasons. Her dim but well-meaning Georgette was the love interest of self-important anchorman Baxter (Ted Knight), who courted and eventually her during the November 1975 sweep — though he didn’t seem all that prepared for it. They went on to adopt a child and later had one of their own.
The role earned her back-to-back Emmy noms for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1976 and ’77.

Tony Bennett and Diana Krall unite for a classy, revamped version of George and Ira Gershwin’s 1924 song “Fascinating Rhythm.” The track previews their upcoming collaborative LP of Gershwin reworks, Love Is Here to Stay, out September 14th via Verve Records/Columbia Records.
On the single, the singers exchange vocals over snappy piano, brushed drums and walking double-bass. “Fascinating rhythm, you’ve got me on the go/ Fascinating rhythm, I’m all a-quiver,” Krall sings. The track ends with a slowed-down, swaggering blues progression.

“So darn persistent” — that’s a phrase that George and Ira Gershwin came up with to describe “Fascinating Rhythm,” and it also applies to the endurance and willpower of Tony Bennett, who turns 92 on Friday. “Fascinating Rhythm” was the first recording Bennett ever made back in 1949, and after a few subsequent stabs at it in the intervening decades, he returns to that touchstone in a brand new duet with Diana Krall. Variety has the track’s exclusive premiere.
The unveiling of the recording precedes the unveiling of an entire joint album by Bennett and Krall, “Love is Here to Stay,” set to be officially announced on Bennett’s birthday. Variety can reveal the track listing for their first-ever full-length project together, which consists of 12 classic Gershwin compositions. The album, due September 14 on Verve/Columbia, includes a good number of songs one or the other or both of the duo have...

Holy moley. They really did it.
I have been operating under the assumption for the entire second half of this season that when the time came to drive that spike through Iris West, they'd find a way out of it. This isn't how it's supposed to end for Barry and Iris, right? The only mystery was in who else the show would break our hearts with, but it certainly wouldn't be Iris.
Ummm... oops?
Look, there's an entire episode left, and as we've learned time and time again on The Flash, reality is a fairly malleable concept. Of course, the bigger heartbreak may simply be when Barry knows that even though he can change the past again,...

As you’ve probably already guessed by now, 5 Flights Up will see Freeman and Keaton play a married couple who find themselves faced with a tough decision: should they sell their beloved Brooklyn home? Over the course of the film, they begin to realize that leaving the house they know and love may not be as daunting as they first imagined, instead offering up a whole new life opportunity in their twilight years.

Focus World has picked up domestic rights to the Diane Keaton-Morgan Freeman pic Ruth & Alex following its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Directed by Richard Loncraine (Wimbledon, My One And Only) from a script by Charlie Peters, the adaptation of Jill Ciment’s Heroic Measures also stars Cynthia Nixon in the story of a NYC couple (Keaton and Freeman) deciding whether to sell their longtime Brooklyn home.
Focus World, the alternative distribution arm of Focus Features, will release the film, and Myriad Pictures continues to sell international rights. Anjay Nagpal negotiated the deal for Focus World with Wme Global and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.

I didn’t see Robin Williams‘ attempt at a new sitcom, CBS’ The Crazy Ones. I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to think that the great Robin was, at only 62, already making the trip back to weekly TV half-hours after such a stellar, Oscar-winning career in films and such a bright, unhinged light on comedy stages for all of his career. It’s just too constricting for this kind of talent. It’s even sadder to think the show got cancelled after one season, a failure that must have been hard to take. No, my most recent memories of Robin Williams are on the big screen, where he seemed to be heading for a place of renewal, not only as the funnyman everyone knew, but really a fine dramatic actor. In this year’s The Face Of Love he played a supporting role as a man heartbreakingly...

He found stardom on screen in Lawrence of Arabia, but O'Toole was a legendary and often mesmerising presence in the theatre
• Obituary: Peter O'Toole, 1932-2013
• Peter O'Toole: a life in pictures
• Peter O'Toole: a career in clips
Today's papers all carry big pictures of Peter O'Toole as Lawrence of Arabia. Although that role made him an international star and launched a long film career, it shouldn't be forgotten that he was a formidable stage actor. What made him unusual was that he was something of a throwback to an earlier era: I'd describe him as a charismatic romantic with the glamour found in actor-managers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. And, if he returned to the stage only spasmodically after his film career took off, it may have been because he didn't fit easily into the new director-driven theatre.
I first heard of O'Toole when stories spread about...

Mile High Horror Film Festival
Oct. 3-6, 2013
Littleton, Colorado
A lot of thought, hard work and dedication went into the Mile High Horror Film Festival this year. With over 60 quality feature films, shorts, and music videos from 13 different countries, the 4 day fest hosted by Alamo Draft House (allies to the independent film genre) had camp to vamp and everything in between.
The festival had a wealth of new and old industry blood, live performance artists (or free range zombies, whichever you prefer), and an intriguing assortment of vendors and artists. The enthusiastic attendees can never be accused of living in their parents basements, but one step better, underneath their parents basement…
Some real stand outs besides the critic and audience pick winners were: Fist of Jesus- A Mexican import exploring the theme that Lazarus was indeed the first zombie. Hell No- A hilarious take...

When Claire van der Boom auditioned for the role of a younger version of Diane Keaton.s character in the Us movie Life Itself, the director told her she was the only one who didn.t try to impersonate Keaton as Annie Hall in the classic Woody Allen movie.
That was the clincher and the Los Angeles-based Australian actress started shooting the film directed by Englishman Richard Loncraine (Wimbledon, My One and Only) in New York last week.
Adapted from Jill Ciment.s novel Heroic Measures, the film stars Keaton and Morgan Freeman as Ruth and Alex, a couple whose life is disrupted when the East Village apartment where they lived for 40 years is put up for sale, a bidding war ensues and Manhattan falls under a terrorism threat.
Claire plays Ruth as she meets Alex, an artist, when she models for his paintings.

Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton have had long careers, both of them have won Oscars, and both of them are so popular and prolific that you'd have to assume they crossed paths at some point, right? Nope. The two will be filming their first movie together this year-- and even better, they'll be getting romantically involved to do it. Myriad Pictures announced the two will star in Richard Loncraine.s comedy Life Itself, and they.ll play a long-married couple, so they.re really going to get some screen time together in a plot that sounds more enjoyable than most of the feel-good projects that Keaton usually gets herself into. The film is Loncraine.s first since 2009.s My One and Only, and he.s reteaming with that film.s screenwriter Charlie Peters (3 Men and a Little Lady), who adapted it from the much-loved novel Heroic Measures by Jill Ciment.

Whew. That title is a mouthful. I know you already know what I mean though, you golden fiends. This very impromptu post is brought to you by a recent Tribeca revival screening of Martin Scorsese's indelible King of Comedy (1983) and this Movie Line interview with Sandra Bernhard herself -- to whom I'm dedicating the list -- who couldn't make it but definitely helped make the movie what it is. My one and only back and forth conversation with Sandra -- over Twitter, the sometimes leveler -- involved how freaking robbed she was for an Oscar nomination for that movie. I couldn't believe I was talking to her but I was not the least bit in doubt that she'd agree with me.

Stephen Chbosky's "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is set to play the Toronto Film Festival tomorrow. Press screenings are happening today. It's a nice, public space to debut the film, which opens on September 21, but it's also sure to be a big coming-out for star Logan Lerman, who gives a shattering performance of tenderness, emotion and, its its own way, charisma. Lerman hasn't been on my radar in any substantial way, really. He's the "Percy Jackson" guy. He was good enough in "My One and Only" and certainly held his own in "3:10 to Yuma." But I wasn't really...

From queen of the pool to lady of the rings. Missy Franklin is an Olympic champion and if her heavy medal haul (four golds, thankyouverymuch) didn't prove that enough already, then her newly tattooed body sure does. Fresh off making a splash in London, the Team USA swimmer took to Twitter to show off the true mark of a winner: her Olympic rings ink. "All inked up! Ahh! Can't believe it! My one and only!" the 17-year-old tweeted. And before you ask, yes, she had mama and papa Franklin's blessing for the well-earned tat. "Hahaha yes they did!" she tweeted when asked, by fellow swimmer Matt McLean, if her parents had to accompany her to get branded. "They were...
