If you’ve ever questioned the need for police resources to be spent on decades-old cold cases, Steeltown Murders will leave you in no doubt. Over four episodes, this BBC drama shows how momentous it is for victims and their families to know the truth about a crime, however much time has passed since it was committed.
In 1973, three Welsh teenagers were murdered in Neath and Port Talbot. Sandra Newton, Pauline Floyd and Gwyneth Hughes were picked up hitchhiking after nights out, and then raped, strangled to death and discarded. For almost 30 years, their families and friends lived without knowing who their killer was or whether he walked among them.
Steeltown Murders shows how those three decades were permeated with grief, regret and guilt – not from the killer, whose motivations and reactions this BBC drama studiously ignores – but from the girls’ loved ones, and from the police who initially failed them.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

The Hunt For Raoul Moat will explore the major 2010 police operation to apprehend fugitive Raoul Moat, who went on the run in Northumbria after killing one person and wounding two others.
The drama focuses on the innocent victims of Moat’s crimes – Christopher Brown, Samantha Stobbart and PC David Rathband; the police officers who put themselves in the firing line to apprehend Moat; and a local journalist who sought to tell Moat’s real story in a landscape of sensationalist reporting and social media provocation.
It will begin with Moat ex-partner Stobbart piecing her life back together following Moat’s imprisonment for assault. After he is released, he attempts to rekindle their relationship but when Moat realises that won’t happen, arms himself with a shotgun and confronts her and new partner Brown.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we present Simon Heath, World Productions CEO and exec producer of Line of Duty, the biggest UK TV drama of the decade.
Line of Duty, Vigil and The Pembrokeshire Murders. The three most-watched dramas in the UK last year were all united by one common denominator: World Productions.
By World’s own standards, the ITV Studios-backed drama powerhouse had a phenomenal year during what was a difficult 12 months for the industry, with Covid never far from the mind and a highly-publicized skills crisis making TV production trickier than ever.

Director Marc Evans wasn’t previously familiar with the real-life crimes that were the basis for the three-part BritBox limited series “The Pembrokeshire Murders,” but he knew that county in Wales. “I have family there. Every summer holiday as a kid was spent there. It’s a beautiful part of the world,” he says. “And then to hear about this case that almost was a stain on that landscape, this unsolved thing that haunted the area for so long. I was immediately interested. And the further I got into the case, the more it seemed like such an extraordinary and strange story.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Evans above.

Lucky for the British streamer BritBox, voters for the longform categories at the Emmys have historically lavished trophies upon nearly all things British. That’s jolly good news for “The Pembrokeshire Murders,” a three-part drama series now being weighed by voters.
The series is based upon a real murder spree, staring Luke Evans as Detective Superintendent Steve Wilkins, who decided to re-revive a 20-year-old unsolved case that might now yield new results based upon recent technological advances in forensic DNA analysis. The killings occurred in the 1980s, apparently linked to a string of burglaries, and were ultimately tied to a Welsh serial killer named John Cooper, who is portrayed by Keith Allen.
“The Pembrokeshire Murders” is the thirteenth in a string of ITV mini-series featuring infamous British murder cases of the past two centuries.

After presenting a list of hot TV series with the grim central trend of “we may survive” last year, the folks at The Wit identified “we are all survivors” as the main theme running through this year’s Fresh TV fiction selection.
Presented at MipTV by Wit CEO and co-founder Virginia Mouseler, the 2021 selection is headlined by Russell T. Davies’ Channel 4 drama “It’s a Sin,” which Mouseler described as “era defining.”
“It’s the series I found the most tragic, the most moving, the most stimulating this season. It’s a story of survival, but above all it’s a story of liberation,” Mouseler said.
The list is littered with serial killer and abduction dramas, with crime and cop shows in general making up around 70% of the selections.

Last year proved transformational for television, and one of the most surprising outcomes is that North America is no longer the largest region globally for daily TV consumption.
According to a Glance (Global Audience & Content Evolution) presentation at MipTV, both Europe and South America have now overtaken North America in this regard.
“Globally you see that TV consumption remains very stable since 1982. The difference comes from the different regions,” explained Glance VP Frédéric Vaulpré. “What is striking is to see that now, the number one region in terms of TV consumption is Europe, followed by South America.”
Average global daily TV consumption last year stood at the two hours and 54 minutes mark, per Glance’s research, which represents a six-minute increase on the 2019 average. Of particular interest is the fact that the young adult demographic was up two minutes versus the prior year, perhaps a surprise given YA viewing habits.

In what is the first official glimpse of the pandemic’s impact on U.K. film and television production, British Film Institute (BFI) data reveals that film and high-end television production spend exceeded £2.84 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2020, only 21% down on 2019 levels.
BFI boss Ben Roberts tells Variety that the speed with which the industry was able to band together and hammer out guidelines for production allowed the sector to weather the toll of the pandemic, particularly as it allowed the buoyant studio sector to quickly rev up operations. Film and television production has continued through the U.K.’s three national lockdowns, working to pan-industry guidelines that were drawn up in late spring. The BFI led the Screen Sector Taskforce, creating the guidance for Covid-safe productions alongside a host of industry players, including the British Film Commission and producers’ trade org Pact.

The Pembrokeshire Murders, Luke Evans’ drama on a murder investigation in Wales, has helped British broadcaster ITV to some of its best drama ratings in years.
Made by Bodyguard and Line Of Duty producer World Productions, the three-part series debuted on Monday with 6.3M viewers in the key 9Pm battleground, according to overnight figures supplied by overnights.tv.
The Pembrokeshire Murders comfortably won its slot and, according to ITV, it was the network’s biggest new drama series launch since The Durrells in April 2016. It was also the biggest audience for any ITV drama since Vera in 2018.
Evans plays police officer Steve Wilkins in the drama, which depicts the pursuit of a cold-blooded serial killer and is based on true-crime book Catching the Bullseye Killer, written by Senior Investigating Officer Steve Wilkins and ITV News journalist Jonathan Hill.

With Mipcom cancelled as a physical event, one might think that British distributors would be fearful about the business impact of not travelling to Cannes for their busiest TV show market of the year.
Far from it. While Brit distributors lament not being able to meet with clients over a glass of French rosé in October, most say they are gearing up for a busy month full of online video pitches amid heightened demand for content from broadcasters and streamers in the Covid-19 era.
Because of uncertainty about whether Mipcom would or wouldn’t take place, ITV, for example, has run its own three week-long event, the Fall Festival, a series of virtual sessions for buyers that began on Sept. 14.
BBC Studios has also launched its own virtual sales portal, BBC Studios Connect, to host its content catalog during the Mipcom period. The site opened on Sept. 28 for three weeks,...

Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films and Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories are hoping to shoot Nine Perfect Strangers, a Hulu-commissioned series based on Liane Moriarty’s latest novel, in northern Nsw.
That is contingent on Border Force granting exemptions on travel restrictions to Kidman’s co-stars including Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Manny Jacinto and Melvin Gregg, plus other key creatives.
There is a production office in Byron Bay and a shoot of at least 20 weeks, which would employ a large number of Australian crew and some supporting actors, is planned – pending Border Force’s approval on visas. It’s believed a lot of the crew will be sourced from Melbourne, which is in lockdown for six weeks.
Variety broke the news of the Australian shoot in an interview with Evans, who said: “We all have to be quarantined in a hotel room. I can’t see anyone for two weeks.

Exclusive: BritBox, the U.S. streamer backed by the BBC and ITV, has hit 1M subscribers. The service has doubled its take-up since January 2019.
The platform, which launched in March 2017, attributed its success to tapping into an “underserved” audience of women 45 years and older with a slew of British series. It noted that by “super-serving” this audience, it was also able to record low single-digit churn.
It has also been closing the gap between the time a show launches in the UK and its debut on BritBox with shows such as The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special, nature doc series Spring Watch, Piers Morgan-fronted Good Morning Britain and political series Prime Minister’s Questions all airing day-and-date on the platform.
In addition to series such as Brenda Blethyn’s Vera, Kelly Macdonald’s The Victim and John Cleese’s Hold the Sunset, it has been increasingly moving into original...
