From a director who bounces between subpar T&A flicks and no budget awful blaxploitation using more pseudonyms than Penthouse Letters you know what genre 'Hood Copz' aka 'Ghost City' belongs to. Another digital cam cheapie in the spirit of efforts such as 'Vampiyaz', 'Zombiez' & 'Bloodz vs. Wolvez'. So the question becomes does it have enough of those bad movie laughs to make it worth watching? The answer is no.
Undercover NYPD narcotics cop Daryl Woods (Richard Carroll Jr) is the best, but dealing with constant headaches, sleep deprived and morose over those he's killed in the line of the duty. He tries to quit the force, but the smooth talking Chief of Police aiming for a run in politics won't let him. Its one "last" bust to takedown bigtime dealer Selena (Jenicia Garcia) who supplies half the city's crack cocaine as Daryl battles trying to stay alive, hallucinations and a ghost.
Daryl seeing a physiatrist, prescription pills is supposed to add emotions and layers, but so surface level (like everything else) it only pads time. Majority of which is spent watching amateur filmmaking through dope deals or shootouts that are neither shot well, believable, intelligent or exciting. Threadbare script, dialog surely improvised on the spot and even when a ghost becomes involved the whole thing doesn't go off the rails in a funny way. Every component is treated like it's part of a legit drama and not the hokey dollar store theatrics they are.
'Hood Copz' falls in line with Zachary Snygg's other poor blaxploitation pieces so I can't act surprised at how cheap, boring it was. Box cover is the cop looking like he belongs in a video game. If you have a mile high tolerance for flicks that look like you could make 'em then ride the pain train. Just don't expect hilarious moments to make it worth your time.
