With most big TV shows, there's usually at least one ironic example of an actor who auditioned for a totally different role than what they got. Jeremy Strong initially tried out for the role of Roman Roy on "Succession," for instance, and Christina Hendricks from "Mad Men" originally auditioned for the role of Peggy, then Midge, before landing on Joan. A similar situation happened on "The Boys" for Black Noir's actor Nathan Mitchell. Before being cast as the mysterious, silent, always-masked Black Noir, he tried out for the Deep. As Mitchell explained to The Hollywood Reporter:
"I thought, 'It would really be cool if I got to do this show. But this probably isn't going to happen, whatever.' I sent [an audition tape] in and didn't hear anything back. Then I went on vacation with my family. Even though it was a great time, I couldn't shake the feeling that I...

When it comes to big-budget productions made in Hong Kong, few could hold a candle to director Benny Chan whose resume includes such titles like “Rob-b-Hood”, “New Police Story” and “Raging Fire”, his last work before his death. As he was approached to do a remake of David R. Ellis' action-thriller “Cellular”, Chan did not have to think twice about the proposition since it gave him the chance to put the original premise within the Hong Kong culture, and therefore making his version much more than a mere copy as you might assume as first glance. “Connected”, which is currently streaming on Netflix, includes the ingredients typical for the kind of action thriller Chan is known for, as well as some impressive stunt work and great performances, especially leading man Louis Koo playing an unlikely hero.

Zurich Film Festival has revealed the lineup for its Hashtag section, which is devoted to “a topic that is trending on social media,” the event said Thursday. This year’s section screens films under the title #MyReligion, and deals with “questions of faith, euphoria and modern deities.”
“Whether in the U.S.A., Russia or the Middle East, we are seeing a comeback of religions,” Christian Jungen, Zff artistic director, said. “This often leads to conflicts in coexistence within multicultural societies. That’s why this year we are concentrating our efforts on the topic of faith, its merits and its dark sides. But we are also highlighting the substitute religions that are out there now for secular people, such as the Tiktok cult.”
The selected films are Adamma Ebo’s comedy “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.,” Tarik Saleh’s thriller “Boy From Heaven,” Tarik Saleh’s coming-of-age drama “The Realm of God,...

Public broadcaster Kcet, and its stable of locally produced Southern California-centric programming, leads all local TV stations for this year’s Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, scoring 20 nods overall, the Television Academy announced Monday.
Kcet pulled ahead of Univision-owned Kmex (which it tied with last year), which came in second with 15 nominations. After that was Telemundo’s Kvea, with 13, and then newcomer Spectrum News 1, with 12.
Spectrum News 1 was launched in late 2018 by Spectrum Cable, and earned three nominations last year despite launching midway through this year’s eligibility period. This was the first full eligiblity year for the local cable news channel.
Among traditional English-language commercial broadcast stations, Nexstar’s Ktla was first with seven nominations.
Kcet’s sister station Koce “PBS SoCal” earned an additional six nominations, giving the PBS SoCal Media Group a combined 26.
The Television Academy also revealed Kcet had already won an Emmy in the independent programming category.

by Craig PhilipsRay Morton's article in the new issue of Script magazine (an article I believe is only available in print), called "Going Global: Screenwriting in the International Marketplace," features an interesting section, "Remake Out," on the surprising number of properties exported from America to other countries. (We all know about the sheer number of Us remakes of foreign titles—which Morton also writes about.) While this section doesn't represent everything I necessarily believe in, it's important food for thought: Remake Out
Traditionally, Hollywood has always been an exporter—our movies play in every market in the world and our television shows have been dubbed into most known languages. Lately, we have even begun to export our history as a number of Us film companies have licensed remake rights to some of their movies to overseas producers. For example, in May 2007, Viacom made a deal with Studio 18--India's largest film...
