Guess who’s back reviewing WWE Raw? Nerdly that’s who! Yes, we’re getting back into regularly reviewing the WWE’s flagship show going forward. Hopefully watching and enjoying and not hate-watching though! So far it’s been a little… mixed. Let’s see what’s happening this week.
Match #1: 24/7 Title Match – Dana Brooke def. Becky Lynch The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Moments after Dana Brooke recaptured the 24/7 Title from Akira Tozawa, Becky Lynch insisted that their match be restarted with the title on the line. A distraction by Asuka allowed Brooke to attempt the pin. As she did, The Empress held Lynch’s foot to ensure the three-count and give Dana her second huge victory of the night, this time over an irate Big Time Becks.

From The Shallows to Crawl, the man vs. beast subgenre of thriller has had a new resurgence. Now, it’s Everest and 2 Guns director Baltasar Kormákur’s turn to try his hand with Beast, arriving this August. Led by Idris Elba, who also has George Miller’s new movie landing a few weeks later, the first trailer has now debuted.
The film follows Elba’s character as a father returning to South Africa with his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion. Also starring Sharlto Copley as manager of the game reserve, it looks to be a tense survival thriller as Kormákur tries something a bit more small scale.
See the trailer below.
Beast opens on August 19.

Idris Elba finds himself the target of a murderous lion in the trailer for Beast, a new thriller hitting theaters this summer.
In the trailer for the film, Elba portrays Dr. Nate Daniels, a widowed dad of two teenage girls who takes his family on a sightseeing trip to the South African game reserve. However, their journey quickly becomes bloody as the family and Daniels’ wildlife biologist friend (played by Sharlto Copley) come face-to-face with the massive apex predator hellbent on killing every human it encounters.

"It's the law of the jungle! It's the only law that matters." Universal has debuted the first official trailer for Beast, a new angry lion movie from director Baltasar Kormákur. This reminds me of the 90s hit The Ghost and the Darkness, also about rogue lions attacking people with a similar intensity as this one. Idris Elba stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. Iyana Halley plays Daniels' 18-year-old daughter, Meredith, and Leah Sava Jeffries plays his 13-year-old, Norah. Also co-starring Sharlto Copley as the local game reserve manager. There's only two or three real shots of the lion in this trailer, which is obviously CGI. And the final scene in this very much seems like a Jurassic Park riff in the truck...

Ever had a holiday and by some random turn of events, it’s just gone incredibly wrong? Maybe you forgot to pack your swimsuit or that extra pair of underwear. Whatever it is, it can’t be as bad as being chased by bloodthirsty lions. “Beast” is a survival thriller from Universal Pictures, directed by Baltasar Kormakur. The Icelandic director is known for his movies such as “Everest” and “Adrift.”

Things were moving so slowly at the Cannes Film Festival that the pace of deals was almost as glacial as the amount of time it takes to get your check at a restaurant in the south of France.
But then, sacré bleu, Netflix struck, shelling out more than 50 million for the rights to “Pain Hustlers,” a conspiracy thriller that unites Emily Blunt with Harry Potter director David Yates, and the move has started to accelerate deal-making up and down the Croisette.
This year’s market has been a litmus test for film sales as the U.S. and key international markets emerge from the worst of the pandemic. Many buyers have hoped for a correction, one that sees prices cool down, with more opportunities for international distributors who are still smarting from eye-watering global streaming buys during the Covid crisis. Universal continued its motif from CinemaCon 2021 on Wednesday, spotlighting the work of movie theater workers during the studio’s presentation, pairing them with their favorite stars. It’s a classy way of paying homage to those in exhibition particularly after the industry was brought to its knees in 2020 to early 2021 due to Covid.
Universal Motion Picture Entertainment Group boss Donna Langley was the first onstage, quipping, “I’m sure there’s a drinking game tied to when a studio executive gets on stage and says ‘the magic of movies.’ ”
“My confidence in theatrical has never wavered,” said Langley.

Update, writethru: It’s no secret that Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore had a less than magical opening domestically this weekend, coming after early overseas rollout began last frame. Still, at the international box office this weekend, the threequel was again the top movie and ranked No. 1 in 52 markets, including 41 of the 44 new openers. The overseas sophomore frame added 71.7M for a cume of 150.4M, bringing global just shy of 200M at 193.4M. In like-for-likes Dumbledore is running 38 behind the previous installment and 42 off the original.
The Fantastic Beasts franchise is more of an international play, though Secrets Of Dumbledore is coming off a previous entry (The Crimes Of Grindelwald) that didn’t really inspire, and left something of a nasty hangover. There’s also clearly money being left on the table given Hollywood is not releasing in Russia, and China is half shut. There are holidays...

Alongside the diminishing returns of “Fantastic Beasts” and the hype for the staggering Viking epic “The Northman,” this week’s news cycle brought news of potential cinephile goldmines, aka the Cannes Film Festival lineup. Already it looks like a vintage year, with new movies from David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, Cristian Mungiu, and Park Chan-wook.
Still, in terms of pure red-carpet optics, Cannes locked its ace-in-the-hole two years ago when it planned to screen “Top Gun: Maverick” out of competition at its canceled edition. At long last, Tom Cruise will walk the red carpet of the Lumiere Theatre for the first time since 1992, when he appeared for Ron Howard’s “Far and Away.” The Cannes launch (which follows a world premiere at CinemaCon) means even people for whom the pronunciation of “Cannes” is as mysterious as its program will catch a whiff of the media excitement around May 18.

Despite a 2018 pledge to program more films by female filmmakers, the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday announced a competition lineup with only three films directed by women.
While additional films could still be added to the slate for next month’s festival, the Cannes lineup falls short of the already dismal record of the last two editions. In 2019 and 2021, the festival featured four films by female directors.
This year’s 18 competition films include Claire Denis’ “Stars at Noon,” American director Kelly Reichardt’s drama “Showing Up” and Italian-French actress-director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s “The Almond Tree.”
In the Un Certain Regard section, devoted to films with less visibility than the main competition entries, eight of the 15 films are from female directors, including “Beast” from Riley Keough and Gina Gammell.

The number of female filmmakers selected for Cannes Film Festival’s Competition program dipped this year, with three of the 18 titles unveiled this morning helmed by women. However, because the selection is smaller this time, the percentage remained consistent.
There could yet be one or two late additions, though festival chief Thierry Frémaux suggested at this morning’s presser that those would most likely be in other programs such as Un Certain Regard.
The three Competition films directed by women are: Showing Up by Kelly Reichardt; Stars At Noon by Claire Denis; and Les Amandiers by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. That’s just under 17 of the program, which is in line with 2021.
Last year, four of the 24 movies in Competition were helmed by women, including the eventual Palme d’Or winner: Julia Ducournau’s Titane was joined by Catherine Corsini’s La Fracture; Mia Hansen-Love’s Bergman Island; and Ildiko Enyedi...

During the pandemic, no major film festival was all shook up more than Cannes, forced to cancel the 2019 event and shifting dates to mid-summer for an overstocked comeback event the following year.
