Ewan McGregor, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, has been one of the world’s most admired screen actors for some 30 years.
The Scotsman, 53, shot to stardom in 1995’s Trainspotting, and has since done standout work in films such as 1998’s Velvet Goldmine, George Lucas’ second Star Wars trilogy (1999-2005), 2001’s Moulin Rouge!, 2003’s Big Fish, 2010’s The Ghost Writer, 2011’s Beginners and 2012’s The Impossible, and on TV limited series including Fargo (2017), Halston (2021) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022).
But rarely, if ever, has McGregor’s work generated the degree of enthusiasm — from critics and the general public alike — that he has garnered for his performance in the 2024 Paramount+ limited series A Gentleman in Moscow, a dramedy in which he plays Count Alexander “Sasha” Rostov, an aristocrat whose life is upended by the Russian Revolution,...

“It’s so nice to talk to The Hollywood Reporter,” Olivia Williams says, as we start our interview, “because I really had that Hollywood experience. I went from living in a damp basement flat in Camden Town to, in a matter of days, flying in a private jet to go on set of a huge Hollywood movie.”
Over the course of a single year, from 1997 to 1998, Williams (before then a jobbing British theater actress, doing commercials for Dove shower cream — “they asked me to audition in a bikini…I felt like giving up”) starred in three studio films: Kevin Costner’s The Postman, Wes Anderson’s Rushmore and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. The Postman was a legendary flop. Rushmore an indie breakout. The Sixth Sense a gargantuan, global hit. Williams, it appeared, had arrived.

The Vatican-set mystery “Conclave” opened in theaters today, but one single shot has been the talk of moviegoers all season on the film festival circuit. Late in the film, we see dozens of Catholic cardinals, all dressed in white and red, filmed from overhead and at a distance, marching forward in the rain. Their faces are obscured underneath stark white umbrellas, which bob along in the frame.
No plot spoilers here, except to say that the shot is emblematic of the high drama and arch formality in the film, which is essential to understanding the story. Based on a novel by Robert Harris (“The Ghost Writer”), the film is about a weary cardinal (Ralph Fiennes) organizing the election of a new pope. It marks the follow-up project for director Edward Berger, an Oscar-winner for 2022’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.”

The twisty political thriller Conclave wastes little time getting right into it: the Pope is dead, and after a three-week time jump, the world’s most powerful cardinals gather in Vatican City, their mission to elect a new leader from among their ranks.
Our window into this closed world is Cardinal Lawrence, portrayed in characteristically sturdy fashion by Ralph Fiennes. Dean of the College of Cardinals, Lawrence is in charge of this conclave, and while he takes his duties very seriously, they’re complicated by a recent request to the (now-dead) Pope to resign his post and be sent elsewhere so that his faith might be reignited. Request denied––perhaps because the former pope knew he needed him to run this forthcoming conclave––Lawrence finds himself in a position of immense power. As a reluctant leader with deep convictions (but still capable of missteps), he is a relatable window into this foreign world.

Daphne Alexander is a Cypriot actress whose career is a testament to her versatility, passion, and enduring connection to her roots. Seamlessly transitioning between high-profile productions by BBC, Netflix, and HBO, as well as theater and alternative projects, Daphne continues to evolve as a performer while maintaining a deep appreciation for her Greek heritage.
The Building of a Character: A Never-Ending Process
Upon meeting Daphne Alexander, one is immediately struck by the rare combination of talent, natural beauty, and an inner calmness that defines her presence. She embodies grace and authenticity, making meaningful connections with those around her both on and off the screen.
Her recent work in Minore, a dark action comedy that diverges from conventional narratives, brought her back to Thessaloniki for the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival. The film, directed by Konstantinos Koutsoliotas, blends traditional Greek music with the otherworldly, resulting in a unique and “insane” experience that Daphne embraced with enthusiasm.

When it comes to separating art from the artist, you might find yourself between a rock and a hard place—or perhaps between a director’s chair and a moral conundrum. Zoë Kravitz is no stranger to the fact that admiring Roman Polanski’s films is a bit controversial, to say the least.
In a recent Esquire profile, the Blink Twice writer/director tackled the elephant in the room: Can we keep loving the art that controversial figures create while still condemning their actions? Well, in Kravitz’s world, it’s all about the art, even if it means accepting that sometimes “somebody bad was involved in something good”.

Especially poignant was her defense of Roman Polanski’s work. After all, he directed cinematic treasures like Rosemary’s Baby and The Tenant, films Kravitz adores despite their creator’s not-so-favorable reputation.

Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

Striking the balance between harsh vibes and exceptional cinema, I’m pleased to announce our next program at the Roxy: The Film Stage has teamed with Chapo Trap House‘s Movie Mindset for Fidelio, a one-week, four-film program on the 1%’s malevolent influence, deep-state connections, and sexual corruption (fun edition).
It begins with Saturday, August 3’s double-bill of Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York and a 25th-anniversary presentation of Eyes Wide Shut on 35mm; the following week brings prints of Clint Eastwood’s delightfully absurd (or not?) potboiler Absolute Power and Roman Polanski’s late-career triumph The Ghost Writer. Each title has at least one encore, and in a couple cases represents first theatrical showings in recent history. Just remember the password.
The Film Stage readers and Chapo listeners receive a discounted $12 ticket with mention of our program at the Roxy’s box office. (Don’t be shy––their employees are very nice.

Queen Elizabeth has been played by numerous actors over the years — three in Netflix’s The Crown alone. But tracking not far behind when it comes to onscreen depictions of major British figures is former prime minister Tony Blair. Among the names to have stepped into the shiny brogues of the divisive politician are the likes of Damien Lewis, Robert Lindsay, Toby Stephens, James Larkin, Ioan Gruffudd, Stephen Mangan, Harry Enfield and Pierce Brosnan (as a version of Blair in Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer). Michael Sheen has also famously played Blair three times.
Joining this illustrious list is Bertie Carvel, the star of stage and screen who joined The Crown for its final outings in seasons five and six. While he’s mostly a supporting bystander in season five, the sixth and final season of Netflix’s hit royal drama — which centered its first four episodes, now streaming,...

Roman Polanski’s Italian producer Luca Barbareschi used the Venice press conference for The Palace, Polanski’s latest black comedy, as an opportunity to blast U.S. streamers for not backing the controversial director.
Noting that Polanski’s back catalog, including such films as Chinatown, The Ghostwriter and Rosemary’s Baby, is carried on many U.S. platforms, he chastized the streamers for not investing in the director’s latest production.
“I don’t understand why all the platforms: Paramount+, Amazon, Netflix, have Polanski’s [older movies] that are making millions for them,” he said. “Why won’t they produce Polanski’s new movie?”
The Palace is set at Switzerland’s Gstaad Palace luxury hotel and examines the interactions between the hotel’s serving staff and the phenomenally wealthy guests in the run-up to a New Year’s Eve party to ring in the new millennium of 2000. Mickey Rourke, John Cleese, Fanny Ardant,...

An aspiring writer recently graduated from Oxford descends upon the gloomy countryside estate of revered author J.M. Sinclair for a summer gig tutoring his son. Naturally, the young man, Liam, arrives bearing an unfinished manuscript with which he plans to impress his hero, but if there’s anything to be taken away from this “exquisitely made chamber piece”, it’s that meeting your idols isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Though the house overflows with contemporary art curated by Sinclair’s wife, Hélène, and light that pours in through floor-to-ceiling windows, sorrow echoes between its hallways and behind its locked doors. Two years earlier, we learn, the Sinclairs’ eldest drowned himself on the property, a trauma that sent J.M. into professional hiatus. Since premiering his last film “An Officer and a Spy” in competition at Venice in 2019, Roman Polanski has fallen from grace in France. But he’s now back with a new movie called “The Palace” that could make a surprise splash on the festival circuit.
Polanski, who fled the U.S. in 1978 after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl, was leading a pleasant life in France for decades until he came back into the global spotlight with the Lido premiere of “An Officer and a Spy” and scooped the Grand Jury Prize.
Shortly after the movie’s Venice bow, Polanski faced new allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denies. When he went on to win best director at France’s Cesar Awards, the country’s equivalent of the Oscars, industry outcry prompted a complete overhaul of the leadership of the awards org. Since The Crown launched on Netflix in 2016, it’s become a monumental hit, including being the first show to win all seven major drama category awards during the 2021 Emmys. And now it’s back for its fifth, and penultimate, series.
There’s a particular buzz around this latest season of this fictional dramatisation of the life of Queen Elizabeth II: not only is there a major cast change for the second time, it will also be the first time a new series airs since the deaths of Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip.
Season five will cover the 1990s, arguably one of the royal family’s most difficult decades. They endured a major fire at Windsor Castle, the messy public breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, and the leadup to the tragedy of Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris.

Extreme haunts aren’t for the faint of heart. Over the years, these gonzo attractions have developed a reputation for roughing up their brave visitors and subjecting them to disgusting and depraved acts. From eating cockroaches to being nailed shut in a coffin, guests are practically tortured before they can exit. Yet despite their notorious practices, an extreme haunt obviously isn’t going to kill anyone, no matter how real or dangerous everything might seem, or how far they go with a scenario. That’s of course where horror movies take over; they defy reality and fulfill the audience’s expectations. And like those that came before it, Haunt wants to make sure its patrons have a hell of a story to tell — so long as they can make it out alive.
Harper (Katie Stevens), the central character of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ 2019 movie Haunt, only begins to examine...

ReviewWhile director Praveen Sattaru’s ‘The Ghost’ has some slick action sequences, there is no compelling story, which is made worse by a contrived screenplay.Balakrishna GaneshanScreenshot/YouTubeNagarjuna’s The Ghost competed at the box-office with megastar Chiranjeevi’s Godfather, a remake of the Malayalam film Lucifer. But director Praveen Sattaru’s The Ghost is not completely an original film either. It is a mix of many Hollywood films, particularly Avengers: Endgame and John Wick. The tragedy of replicating scenes from these films is that both are super popular and audiences can spot them easily. Nagarjuna plays Vikram, an Interpol officer who is an excellent marksman. His daily work involves gunning down criminals. Priya (Sonal Chauhan) is his colleague and girlfriend. The duo eliminates criminals with perfect headshots – like it’s a video game. After situations force Vikram to retire, his anger, triggered by past trauma, ruins his relationship with Priya and they break up.

While the movie is getting a grand festival release in the Telugu states alongside Nagarjuna’s The Ghost, here is what veteran actor Chiranjeevi had to say about the film a day before its release. "Every story has a soul. We need to connect to it," said Chiranjeevi, while speaking about Godfather to reporters on Tuesday in Hyderabad. TollywoodIndustry observers say that while both films have their own unique target audiences, Chiranjeevi’s ‘Godfather’ has an edge over Nagarjuna’s ‘The Ghost’ due to its star power and promotions.Rajeswari ParasaFacebookThe festival season in Tollywood – be it Sankranthi, Dasara or Deepavali – is incomplete without multiple star-driven films releasing, often even clashing at the box-office. This Dasara, two big stars are gearing up for a grand release – Chiranjeevi with Godfather and Nagarjuna with The Ghost. While both films are releasing on Wednesday, October 5 in India, the US premiere shows will happen on October 4. Amid these top-tier movies, Swathi Muthyam, a family entertainer that is also releasing on October 5, has managed to create some buzz too. Fans have already decked up theatres with banners of their favourite actors and are ready to welcome their movies. An untypical project for Henry Hathaway who specialized in two-fisted action films, 1935’s Peter Ibbetson is unusual in more ways than one. Gary Cooper and Ann Harding play two steadfast lovers whose romance will not be denied; even when Cooper is imprisoned they’re able visit each other in their dreams. Almost oppressively strange, the film’s real calling card is the exquisite photography by Charles Lang who knew his way around haunted love affairs—he shot The Uninvited and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

Even for the twisty paranoid thriller sub-genre, there is a whole lot going on in Yann Gozlan’s Black Box.
