Italian producer Domenico Procacci, whose Fandango shingle is developing Elena Ferrante’s “The Lying Life of Adults” for Netflix, has several new films in the pipeline, including chiller “Pantafa” toplining Kasia Smutniak (“Devils”) as a strong-willed mother trying to protect her haunted young daughter.
“Pantafa,” which takes its cue from an ancient Italian legend involving an evil spirit that stifles women in their sleep, has just ended principal photography. Pic is directed by Emanuele Scaringi, who has long worked with Fandango in various guises: as writer, creative producer (“Bangla”), and director of graphic novel adaptation “The Armadillo’s Prophecy,” Scaringi’s feature film debut that went to Venice. He also directed TV crime series “L’Alligatore” for Rai.
“Fandango has never made a horror film in 30 years [of our existence] because I’m personally neither a big fan [of this genre] nor an expert,” Procacci tells Variety. But Scarigni “really believed in this project, so I went with it,...

Netflix is on track to open its Italian base in Rome in the second half of 2021, and is committing to doubling down on its output of local original series by 2022.
The streaming giant revealed plans to open a Rome office one year ago, just prior to the pandemic, but the crisis slowed down the opening. Now, the company has taken a lease on a large, classy neoclassic building in central Rome, called Villino Rattazzi, located near the U.S. Embassy and the iconic Via Veneto.
The Netflix Rome office will be opening in the second half of this year and will start out with a staff of 40 employees, ranging from marketing and public relations to production executives. That number is destined to grow, it said in a statement.

After Nasa confirmed their plan to work with Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX on a film that would be shot in outer space, sources tell Variety the project has found its director.
Doug Liman, who worked with Cruise on “Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made” has come on to direct the mystery movie, which will partly be filmed in outer space.
Deadline Hollywood broke the news weeks ago that Cruise and Musk had been plotting with Nasa on the idea of shooting the project in space with Nasa confirming the story days later.
The film currently has no distributor and exact plot details are unknown, but Liman’s hiring is a leap in the right direction for the project. Paramount has denied it’s the same film, but Liman and Cruise had been developing Liman’s passion project “Luna Park” at Paramount and clearly had an interest in doing something in outer space.

Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov missed the premiere of his film “Leto” in Cannes this month because he is under house arrest. In January, authorities banned “The Death of Stalin” from being screened in Russia, complaining that Armando Iannucci’s satirical movie depicted “ideological warfare” and extremism.”
But acclaimed Russian-French director Pavel Lungin thinks that such crackdowns under Vladimir Putin could end up being a creative blessing.
“Censorship always brings about some kind of force among the cultural society,” Lungin said. “We have the great experience of the Soviet Union, where Soviet censorship created such wonderful films, like [those of Andrei] Tarkovsky. Perhaps a little bit of difficulty only makes an artist stronger.”
Lungin spoke to Variety on the Israeli set of “Esau,” his English-language debut, an adaptation by author Meir Shalev of his novel of the same name. The film follows a 40-year-old writer who returns to his family home after half a...

With hits like The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Edge of Tomorrow under his belt, director Doug Liman has had the chance to make smaller, more intimate movies in between, and that certainly can be said for The Wall, his latest movie.
The Wall begins with two soldiers, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena, out in the broiling hot Iraqi Desert as the war has come to an end, as they investigate a situation where contractors were killed, presumably by an expert sniper. When the two soldiers get separated, Taylor-Johnson’s Sergeant Allen Isaac ends up stranded behind a wall, the only thing protecting him from the sniper who taps into his ear piece and starts playing mind games with him.
While this is a relatively smaller movie for Liman, it doesn’t lack in the tension and excitement of his earlier films, while also in the...

Doug Liman, known for his action-packed films like “Edge of Tomorrow” and “The Bourne Identity,” has a new war drama in the works titled “The Wall.”
Principal photography on the thriller ended last month and now the first trailer has been released by Amazon Studios. Starring John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the film follows two soldiers who get shot by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. The sneak peek shows the two actors getting hit and trying to stay alive, all while taking direction from the enemy.
“Scope is an extension of my eye. Trigger is an extension of my best. The rifle is an extension of me and I strike you down,” says Cena laying wounded on the ground.

Doug Liman is gearing up to film “Edge of Tomorrow 2,” which will reteam the director with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. It was previously reported that a sequel was underway after the 2014 film exceeded expectations and received positive reviews from critics.
While details are under wraps for “Edge of Tomorrow 2,” Liman told Collider that the sequel will actually be a prequel.
“That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel,” he stated.

Warner Bros. has gone to writer Jason Fuchs to script its Minecraft movie, Variety reports, implying that he is good with right angles. Fuchs’ biggest credit to date is probably—yikes—Pan, but his name has been attached to a number of the studio’s projects, including a Lobo flick and Wonder Woman. However, it’s worth noting that Fuchs was not credited in a release, which went out tied to this summer’s San Diego Comic Con, about that latter film. That announcement said Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns wrote the screenplay, while Heinberg and Zack Snyder conceived the story. Fuchs is also reportedly involved with a Doug Liman-Tom Cruise enterprise called Luna Park.

In surprising news, Tom Cruise is in talks to star in the reboot of "The Mummy at Universal Pictures says Variety.
Jon Spaihts is penning the script which is set in present day, but plot specifics are being kept vague. Cruise isn’t expected to produce, but he will play a major part in development.
Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are behind the project and the initiative which will see them shepherding a cinematic universe that will use and mingle characters from Universal's classic monster movie library. Kurtzman will direct and both will produce this particular outing.
Universal is not commenting on casting reports regarding the project at this time. Part of the reason for Cruise's involvement is scheduling. He is currently filming "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" and was to shoot Doug Liman's "Luna" early next year ahead of a "Mission: Impossible 6" shoot in August.

"Wonder Woman" and "Pan" scribe Jason Fuchs has been set to pen the latest draft of "Edge of Tomorrow" actor Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman's sci-fi actioner "Luna Park" at Paramount and Skydance.
The story revolves around a group of renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source. Cruise and Liman, who recently wrapped the period drug thriller "Mena," have been considering the film for some time.
If all goes well, Cruise will try and squeeze filming of 'Luna' in between the end of filming on the currently shooting "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" and the sixth "Mission: Impossible" film which is due to begin shooting next Summer.

Doug Liman has wanted to go off into space for a long time. He toiled for years on Luna, a moon-landing project he developed with Jake Gyllenhaal, but it looks like that will never come to fruition. Now, thanks to a children.s book, Liman is ready to see the stars once again. THR reports that Doug Liman is in negotiations to direct Railman, based on an upcoming novel by Philip Reeve. The plot concerns a future where we take trains from universe to universe. It will center on a thief who is tricked into stealing an item of great value, becoming the subject of an extensive manhunt. It's eighteen months since director Doug Liman jumped aboard All You Need Is Kill, but the fact that it's still a going concern has just been confirmed by the report that Tom Cruise is close to signing as its star.
Based on a Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, for which Warners paid an astronomical sum in early 2010, All You Need is Kill involves a soldier killed in action fighting aliens and then inexplicably having to re-endure his final battle until he gets it right. It's Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers! It feels afraid again and again.
It also, obviously, bears some superficial similarity to this year's Source Code. But with Cruise currently working on One Shot and expected to then move into Oblivion, and Liman hoping to be busy in the near future with Luna, it could well turn out that by the time Kill goes before the cameras, let...

Word that Warner Bros. was looking at Tom Cruise as the potential star of the All You Need Is Kill comic book adaptation – a project previously said to have been re-titled We Are Mortals – popped up a couple months ago (from the time of writing this). The bankable star has at last agreed to headline the sci-fi/action flick.
Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has long been attached to helm the All You Need Is Kill movie, but was previously looking to make the expensive sci-fi thriller Luna his next directorial project. Now that the latter is no longer being co-financed by Skydance, it has been put on the backburner – freeing up Liman to press ahead with his manga-based film instead.

Tom Cruise's bizarre behavior on TV talk shows in the recent past hasn't slowed him down one bit. Even though efforts, like last year's Knight & Day, didn't perform well with American audiences, THR is reporting that the actor with the million dollar smile is being tapped for Doug Liman's sci-fi lit adaptation, All You Need is Kill. The site reports that the project has been re-titled We Are Mortals and that Brad Pitt is no longer being eyed for the role of a soldier who is cruelly caught in a time loop that repeatedly sends him to battle where he dies each day. Once Liman's moon picture, Luna, died, his focus was set on the remake of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel. Even though the script calls for a younger...

Things might be getting a tad shaky when it comes to Doug Liman‘s next feature. After Warner Bros. put the kibosh on Luna, they shifted their focus toward his other developing film, All You Need is Kill. Brad Pitt, who starred for the director in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, was the studio’s pick for the part of “a new recruit in a war against aliens who finds himself caught in a time loop in which he wakes up in the past after having been killed on the battlefield” after Dante Harper‘s script got a little refurbishing
Looks like he passed, because THR says that the studio is now “talking to” Tom Cruise about starring in the newly-titled We Mortals Are. (And you thought that original name was bad.) This is said to be part of his “comeback,” which could only happen after a few years of receding from the public spotlight.

[1] Yet another Jeffrey Archer-based project is in the works, the third announced this month. Bourne director Doug Liman has signed on to direct Everest, an adaptation of Archer's novel Paths of Glory. Up in the Air scribe Sheldon Turner is writing the script, which fictionalizes the story of real-life mountaineer George Mallory and his three attempts in the '20s to become the first man to reach the top of the world's highest mountain. More details after the jump. Here's Deadline's [2] summary of Mallory's fascinating tale: The film is about Mallory’s burning obsession to climb to the top of Mount Everest, and a rivalry with another great climber, Australian George Finch (the grandfather of actor Peter Finch), to get there first. While Everest has been scaled many times (though bodies are littered near the top of the summit of those who failed), the feat was symbolically important and...

Mr. and Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman is attached to direct an adaptation of Jeffery Archer novel Paths of Glory for Sony Pictures. The script written by Sheldon Turner tells the story of George Mallory and his three attempts in the early 1902s to become the first man to scale Mount Everest. Liman still has Luna under his belt so it will be quite a while before we see this project being produced. Liman, who directed The Bourne Identity and Jumper, is known to be an avid climber himself.

It’s been a long while since a Doug Liman picture had us truly excited. For a guy who burst onto the scene in the mid 90′s with such a confident and brash voice via the Indie hits Swingers (based on that great script by Jon Favreau) and 1999′s offbeat drug thriller Go before launching a modern day James Bond franchise in The Bourne Identity, Liman nosedived when he sold his soul to the blockbuster devil like many before him have done, helming the two paycheck endeavors Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Jumper. Very quickly a worthy independent voice had become just another filmmaker and although his last movie Fair Game put him back on track tonally, we couldn’t help but feel it was less meaningful in it’s intentions and more like an Oscar baiting political thriller vehicle for Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.

"The Bourne Identity" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" director Doug Liman has joined "Everest", an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's historical novel "Paths of Glory", at Sony Pictures says Deadline.
Archer's book deals with the mystery of George Mallory's 1924 ascent of Mount Everest. The mountain climber made several attempts to reach the peak, but he and partner Andrew Irvine never returned from their June 1924 climb.
In 1999, Mallory's frozen body was found near the summit on the North Face, and debate has raged ever since about whether he was actually on his way down or up. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to make a successful ascent of the peak in 1953.
Sheldon Turner came onboard to pen the script back in 2009 while Jennifer Klein is producing. Liman will supervise the next draft by Turner with the intention to direct the film which is said to be a priority at the studio.

With his last effort, the political drama "Fair Game" dropping last fall, director Doug Liman has spent most of 2011 figuring out what to do next and he's had no shortage of options. But unfortunately, he's been hit with a bit of bad luck. While for a moment there it seemed like his ambitious and long-gestating sci-fi flick "Luna" would be getting off the ground, just last week word arrived that financing had collapsed, effectively killing the project. In the same report it appeared that Warner Bros. was wanting to move ahead with "All You Need Is Kill" but that…...

Exclusive: Doug Liman has climbed aboard Everest, a Sony Pictures drama about George Mallory and his three attempts in the early 1920s to become the first man to climb the world’s highest mountain. The film, an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s book Paths Of Glory, has a script by Sheldon Turner. Jennifer Klein is producing. Liman has several projects percolating, including Luna, a moon mission film that Paramount Pictures and New Regency are trying to make work, as well as Warner Bros’ Dante Harper-scripted drama All You Need Is Kill. Liman, who directed the action hits The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is himself an avid climber and a fan of the Mallory story. He is in the midst of a deal to supervise the next draft by Turner with the intention to direct a film that is a priority at Sony Pictures. The film is...

Chris Evans is a busy guy. He has two movies opening this month alone. You might have also heard of a little film called “CaptainAmerica” that opened this past summer. With all this going on he still managed to do a fair bit of press for his last film of the year, the romantic comedy “What’s Your Number?”
During the 15-minute roundtable, with the multi-talented actor, we covered topics including his work out regime and how he doesn’t plan on looking at another weight for as long as he can. With so much on his plate, and a project he may begin in November, he is looking forward to taking the month of October off. Note: Chris states “Luna” is not his next project and he doesn’t even know if that’s going to happen, but gave no details on his November film. Chris Evan’s character...

Remember when Warner Bros. announced their plans for a big screen adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's "All You Need Is Kill?" A lot of folks were pretty psyched about it, including our illustrious Movies Blog and Splash Page editor, whose excitement over the title alone is worth revisiting here.
Now there is yet another reason to jump aboard the "Kill" bandwagon: Brad Pitt might sign on to star in it.
Vulture reports that WB has sent an offer to Pitt and that the film might be on the fast track into production now that director Doug Liman's "Luna" has been put on hold at Paramount, freeing up his schedule to start "Kill."
The site also reports that screenwriter Dante Harper’s script, which focuses on a soldier who is trapped in a time loop during a war against a race of alien invaders, has been through a re-write that...

Warner Bros is courting Moneyball star Brad Pitt for their sci-fi thriller All You Need is Kill, an adaptation of a Japanese novel with Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) attached to direct.
According to Vulture, studio executives have made an offer to the star in hopes of landing him and making it Liman’s next movie. Liman unfortunately has free time on his hands after Paramount folded the director’s big-budget moon movie Luna before casting but after Skydance Production backed out. (Skydance is involved with Brad Pitt’s World War Z and the Tom Cruise movie we sifted through in detail, One Shot.)
Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need is Kill centers on Keiji, a United Defense Force soldier caught in a war with alien creatures on Earth. But, when he dies in battle, Keiji miraculously and inexplicably awakes the day before his demise, only to relive the fight again and again.

Sorry, Doug Liman. You won't be going to the moon, after all. The Fair Game director, who proved himself as an action director with the first Bourne adventure and the playful Mr. & Mrs. Smith, has been trying to mount Luna, a space-heist thriller about former astronauts stealing valuable tools to help them get back to the moon where they.d hoped to .acquire an energy source.. But Vulture now says the project is dead, because Paramount and co-financier Skydance pulled the plug on what potentially was going to be a $100 million-plus endeavor. That's bad news for Andrew Garfield, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans and Jake Gyllenhaal, as all had been attached to the project in various stages of casting. But it.s potentially good news for Liman and his Smith co-star, Brad Pitt. Vulture is reporting in its story that Warner Bros. has offered the Moneyball star the lead...

Looking beyond casting, there were two upcoming movies that had me sold based on their unique premise and the directors involved. One was Now You See Me, the illusionist heist flick from Louis Leterrier. The other was Luna, from one of our favorite directors here on the site, Doug Liman(Swingers, The Bourne Identity). Luna was Liman's pet project, a heist film that would have involved a group of...

Brad Pitt has been offered the lead role in Doug Liman's film adaptation of the manga "All You Need Is Kill" at Warner Bros. Pictures says Variety.
The story follows Keiji Kiriya, a young recruit sent out to fight off an alien invasion and finding himself in a Groundhog Day-esque scenario of dying on the battlefield and being reborn each day.
Five months into this cycle though, he notices something different than the previous versions - a female soldier who may be the key to his escape. Dante Harper penned the script.
The project had been on hold as Liman was to direct the space heist movie "Luna" at Paramount Pictures. Co-financier Skydance however has dropped out of the big-budget project so Paramount has abandoned it.
Meanwhile 'Kill' has scored a new draft which reportedly fixed up some third act issues that lead to many comparisons with the...

Just a few months ago, things were looking bright for Doug Liman‘s Luna. Many Hollywood stars — including Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch, Chris Pine, Bradley Cooper, and Chris Evans — were being sought for the lead role, while female actresses such as Rosario Dawson, Rachel McAdams, and Olivia Wilde had their names mentioned in conjunction with a major part.
Written by him and John Hamburg, a plot description can be read below:
“The story centers on a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal — or in this case, kidnap — is an ex-nasa employee.”
If that sounds interesting to you, then I have bad news: Vulture has learned that Warner Bros. is not going forward with the project, due to concerns...

Brad Pitt is being sought by Warner Bros. for a film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka‘s All You Need is Kill. Warner Bros. bought a script based on the Japanese novel in April of 2010. The script was written by Dante Harper.
All You Need is Kill‘s storyline:
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again…When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?

Brad Pitt remains as bankable a commodity as ever (see the early box office returns for his latest starring effort, Moneyball, for proof of that) and Warner Bros. is looking to recruit the A-lister for one of two upcoming army-oriented projects: the Japanese comic book adaptation, All You Need is Kill, and the real-life rescue operation thriller, The Mission.
All You Need is Kill has Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Fair Game) attached to direct, but has been on hold for a while now – since Liman has been pushing ahead with his $100 million sci-fi heist flick, Luna. Now that Skydance is no longer co-financing the latter project, Warner Bros. instead wants to get production on Liman’s manga-based film started next.

Warner Brothers is courting the Moneyball actor to star in the planned Doug Liman film based upon the Japanese Mange authored by Hiroshi Sakurazak about an alien invasion and a cycle of brutal resurrection. When the alien Mimics invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his 158th iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally--the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji's escape or his final death? All You Need is Kill has been put on track for production after Liman's Luna was dropped at Paramount. With a few script changes that doctored the original draft's third act,...

Warner Brothers wants Brad Pitt to be the lead in All You Need Is Kill, a Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Of course, the way things are going with the Akira, the studio’s other adaptation of a popular anime, we might not even get to see this happen, but there is a chance that this film could be produced. In a report from Vulture, there have been a few issues with the film, particularly with the third act:
Eventually, it begins to play like a big-screen version of Halo, where the protagonist dispatches aliens in the same rote way as a twelve year old who’s played too much X-Box 360.
However, the report does go on to say that a new draft has been turned in and that the third act issues have been fixed to the studio’s satisfaction and that it wants to cast Pitt as the lead.

It looks as though Warner Bros. is taking advantage of Paramount’s recent cancellation of Doug Liman’s Luna. Sources are telling Vulture that movement on the planned adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s manga All You Need is Kill is moving forward with Liman set to direct. Not only that, but Brad Pitt is being courted for the lead role. The film was put on hold due to Liman’s commitment to Luna, but not anymore.
Screenwriter Dante Harper is scripting the film about a “young Army recruit who, despite being killed in the first day of intergalactic alien invasion of Earth, is continually resurrected Groundhog Day–style to the day before he was killed.” The film was picked up last Spring, but problems came about with the film’s third act, which seemd to “play like a big-screen version of Halo, where the protagonist dispatches aliens in the same...

Brad Pitt might be headed into manga territory.
The "Moneyball" star has been offered a chance to reunite with his "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" director, Doug Liman, for the adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's comic, according to Vulture.
"All You Need is Kill" tells the story of a young Army recruit who, despite being killed on the first day of an alien invasion of Earth, is continually resurrected "Groundhog Day"–style to the day before he was killed.
We have to admit, that sounds pretty cool... and more than a little depressing.
Warner Bros. is bringing "Kill" to life now that Paramount has pulled the plug on "Luna," the space heist thriller that Liman was set to direct and that had attracted a tentative cast of Andrew Garfield, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans. Now that "Luna" is grounded, WB has leapt at the chance to fast track "Kill" for Liman to direct.

Is this the Akira situation all over again? You might remember that a few months ago, when Warner Bros. was really trying to get the live-action version of Akira going under the direction of Albert Hughes, there were a great many stories about how the studio wanted to cast the film. The primary thrust seemed to be that the teenage characters in the original manga and anime were going to be significantly older in the live-action version. That all became a non-issue when Hughes bowed out [1] and the film was slowed-down as it was re-budgeted [2] and set up for Jaume Collet-Serra to direct, however. The same thing could be happening again, however, with the adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's All You Need is Kill, for which Brad Pitt is reportedly being sought. Now, first thing: it's Brad Pitt, and everyone wants Brad Pitt. So even with Doug Liman set to direct the film,...

Vulture report that Warner Bros. has offered Brad Pitt the leading role in All You Need is Kill, an adaptation of the manga comic by Hiroshi Sakurazaka which the studio reportedly acquired the rights to for a seven figure sum last spring. Director Doug Liman's Luna has been dropped by Paramount Pictures after co-financier Skydance decided to pull out of the project (rumored to be $100+ million) explaining why this adaptation is now moving ahead. According to the site, there have been some issues with the tone of the movies final act, although they reveal that a new draft has resolved the problem. While Pitt may still pass on the project to work with David O. Russell on The Mission (a story about U.S. Navy Seal’s six-year-long rescue effort to free fifteen U.S. hostages from Farc rebels) he is currently their top choice. Here is the official...

It's win some/lose some today for Doug Liman, who has been juggling a few potential projects for his next effort, following last year's political drama "Fair Game." Vulture reports that "Luna"--aka Liman's Moon project--is now dead. Once mooted as a vehicle for Jake Gyllenhaal, "Luna" found fresh life this summer when it was reported that financing was in a place and every young actor in town was lining up to…...

You can assume the conversation between director Doug Liman and Warner Bros., regarding Liman's film 'Luna,' went a little something like this: "Hey Doug, we're shutting down your space heist movie, 'Luna' ... And that, ladies and gentleman, is an example of a studio messing with someone's emotions.
