The last time Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx shared the screen, they were playing the villainous Miss Hannigan and tech billionaire-turned-adoptee Will Stacks in 2014's Annie remake. That movie musical also happens to be the last time Diaz shared the screen with, well, anyone, as the Charlie's Angels star went on a decade-long acting sabbatical following the movie's release (the two events are presumably unrelated.) But now Diaz and Foxx are back back back in the very shrewdly titled Back In Action, which is not as it happens a remake of *that* Looney Tunes movie (sadly), but rather a buzzy, Netflix bound spy comedy from writer-director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) and co-scribe Brendan O'Brien (Bad Neighbours). Check out the action-packed trailer below:
"Tonight something clicked," says Diaz' Emily to husband Matt (Foxx) at the start of this new trailer, "for the first time in a really long time I felt alive again.

“What a thrill to be here in the Criterion … cupboard,” said Jude Law as he cheekily hinted at his British sensibilities within what is actually — quite famously — known as the Criterion Closet. Though America has many faults, this is not one of them and we will forgive Law this grievous correction.
Taking a stop in the closet amidst promoting his period cop thriller “The Order” and the upcoming Disney+ series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” Law took home six films that reflect his broad appreciation for cinema and all it can offer. After pulling off Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Stalker” and discussing its “stillness” alongside another one of the filmmaker’s epic works, “Andrei Rubelev,” the actor selected a classic French film with connections to one of his earliest roles.

Denis Villeneuve recently joined a Q&a with students at Concordia University’s film school in Montreal, where he shrugged off Quentin Tarantino’s comments about refusing to watch “Dune” and its sequel.
Tarantino, known for “Pulp Fiction,” said he’s not interested in watching Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies since he already knew the story from David Lynch’s earlier version.
“I don’t care,” Villeneuve replied, sparking laughter in the room. “I agree with him on not recycling old ideas, but what I did wasn’t a remake—it’s a book adaptation. To me, it’s something original.” Villeneuve added, “But we are very different people.”
Tarantino mentioned his lack of interest in “Dune: Part Two” while speaking on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast.” He explained that he’d seen Lynch’s “Dune” a couple of times and didn’t need to revisit that story. “I don’t...

Just last month, Quentin Tarantino shared a few hot takes on recent movies, including his refusal to watch Denis Villeneuve’s Dune because he’s already seen David Lynch’s version. “I saw [David Lynch’s] Dune a couple of times,” Tarantino said. “I don’t need to see that story again. I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘spice’ so dramatically.“
Villeneuve recently took part in a Q&a at Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal, where he had a simple response to Tarantino’s refusal to watch Dune. “I don’t care,” Villeneuve said, which prompted the audience to erupt in laughter. Denis Villeneuve recently participated in a Q&a with students at Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal, Quebec (via Montreal Gazette) and brushed off Quentin Tarantino’s viral comments about refusing to watch “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two.” The “Pulp Fiction” Oscar winner said he’s not interested in remakes and didn’t need to watch Villeneuve’s films because he was already familiar with the “Dune” story from seeing David Lynch’s previous adaptation.
“I don’t care,” Villeneuve said as the “whole room erupted in laughter,” as reported by the Gazette. “It’s true. I agree with him that I don’t like this idea of recycling and bringing back old ideas. But where I disagree is that what I did was not a remake. It’s an adaptation of the book. I see this as an original.”
Villeneuve added, “But we are very different human beings.

AFM might have moved to Las Vegas, but some things remain exactly the same, including Italy’s commitment to be seen as an attractive spot for international productions.
“It’s a good opportunity to remind our colleagues that Italy has always been, and still is, a key player in our industry. Still, we want to improve even further,” says Marco Valerio Pugini, president of Ape [Association of Executive Producers – Production Service Companies].
“We are a player that, sure, has a long history of culture, fashion and style, as well as nice weather, good food and beautiful locations. But we also have infrastructure, thanks to Cinecittà Studios, a great system of incentives and fantastic crews.”
On Nov. 7, the Focus on Italy showcase – organized by Dgca-MiC, Cinecittà, Ape and Ita [Italian Trade Agency] will explain “Why Filming in Italy Is Now More Convenient Than Ever,” also thanks to the new tax credit dedicated to non-Italian productions.
According to the 2023 Dgca-MiC report, 402 films...

New Italian company PiperFilm is launching sales at AFM on English-language psychological horror film “Beasts of Prey” starring Carolyn Bracken. The Irish actor recently broke out playing the blind protagonist of Damian McCarthy’s chiller “Oddity.”
In the previously announced film, Bracken plays a rich art collector whose life is shattered by a tragic event. “Destroyed by this unbearable pain, an instinctive and primordial nature awakens in her that will lead her to destroy her privileged life and build a new idea of family,” says the provided synopsis.
The film is also described as a “complex and thrilling story about the never-ending struggle between the rational and the animal side of human nature.”
Cameras are rolling in Italy’s northern regions of Lombardy and Piedmont on “Beasts of Prey,” which also stars veteran character actress Caroline Goodall. The film is directed by Italian first-timer Andrea Corsini. “Beasts of Prey” is...

Disney+ has waved its magic wand to place “Agatha” in the comedy category.
Under the banner of Marvel Television Studios, the hit new spin-off series “Agatha All Along,” starring Kathryn Hahn, will be submitted in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season, including the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and next year’s Emmy race, Variety has learned exclusively. The move aligns “Agatha” in a competitive lineup, as it will face acclaimed comedies like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear” and HBO/Max’s “Hacks.”
This decision places Hahn in the running against heavyweights such as Jean Smart, Quinta Brunson, and Ayo Edebiri — who have each won the TV comedy actress race for their respective shows over the past three years. For Hahn, who’s never been nominated for a Globe, a mention could be pivotal as she seeks to make a mark at next year’s Emmys ceremony.

Todd Phillips has a punchline for how theaters can combat the rise of streaming: take out the pre-movie ads.
The “Joker: Folie à Deux” director told Empire magazine that “commercials” have become detrimental to the cinema-going experience. Instead, movie theaters should forego ads all together, Phillips said.
“Stop showing commercials before the movies. We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there,” Phillips said. “The commercials tend to take the air out of the room.”
Presumably, Phillips is referring to actual commercials, and not the pre-feature trailers for other films.
In the case of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” other components seemed to be what drove audiences out of the room. Fellow filmmaker Paul Schrader said he couldn’t get through more than 25 minutes of the critically panned sequel.

Quentin Tarantino has no desire to watch a remake of a preexisting film or show, even if it’s made by a fellow auteur like Denis Villeneuve.
Tarantino said during “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast” that he still has not watched either (Villeneuve) “Dune” movie, and probably never will.
“I saw [David Lynch’s] ‘Dune’ a couple of times. I don’t need to see that story again,” Tarantino said. “I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘spice’ so dramatically.”
And it’s not just a “Dune” IP problem, but rather remakes as a whole. Tarantino also cited his lack of enthusiasm for TV series “Ripley” and “Shōgun.” Though both are critically acclaimed shows, Tarantino says he has again already “seen the story” from their previous iterations.

Quentin Tarantino, best known for his supporting turn in "Destiny Turns on the Radio," has never been shy about his taste in movies. Tarantino has long been drawn to aggressively masculine genre films, Westerns, war pictures, martial arts films, and anything one might have seen at a run-down grindhouse theater in 1977. He also likes very terse, tense movies, and has listed Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," William Friedkin's "Sorcerer," and Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as his favorites. He's likewise admitted to having fond feelings for "The Great Escape" (who doesn't?) and thinks very highly of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk." It's easy to guess that he similarly loves "Rio Bravo" and "Apocalypse Now," and he often recommends the Sonny Chiba vehicle "The Street Fighter" from 1974.
Despite his tastes, however, Tarantino remains cinematically omnivorous, taking in hundreds of movies a year, sussing out the pop...

We’ve come to the final three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 3. I’d love to pound my tankard on the tavern bar and yell, “More. More. More!” But it had to come to an end sooner or later. Let’s take a look:
The Legend of Vox Machina Episode 310: “To the Ends of the World”
Keyleth, upset with how the rest of Vox Machina didn’t listen to her doubts about Raishan, flies away. Then Vex and Vax set out with their plans to finish off Ripley. Pike worries the team is splitting up. She and Grog try bringing Scanlan out of his coma and wonder if they’re unsuccessful because he doesn’t want to wake. Seeing Scanlan’s sheet music gives Pike an idea.
Pike approaches Scanlan’s daughter and shows Kaylie the song he wrote about her. Pike also tells her how...

It was almost midnight on Emmy Awards Sunday. The crowd at the Netflix after-party in Hollywood was thinning fast. Those who were left on that September evening were called to action by the DJ with a “last dance” alert — a Netflix tradition that brought all of the streamers’ remaining staffers to the dance floor for a few final tunes.
As Salt-n-Pepa urged them to “push it,” Bela Bajaria, 53, cut quite a figure, moving around the space in a brightly colored flowing skirt and an off-the-shoulder sheer black blouse.
Bajaria, the chief content officer for the streaming platform that has set the standard for what TV has become in the 21st century, danced in a group that included Netflix programming executives Peter Friedlander and Jinny Howe and communications chief Emily Feingold. Most top executives steer clear of the dance floor at company parties, but Bajaria was the picture of happiness as she danced with easy fluidity.

After Jonathan Bailey had a brief cameo in “Heartstopper” Season 3, creator Alice Oseman is open to more guest appearances in potential future seasons, with Andrew Scott coming to mind.
“I love Andrew Scott,” Oseman told TheWrap. “I think he’s such an established queer actor … he would be an incredible addition to the show. Maybe he can be another teacher or something like that, I don’t know, but that would be cool.”
Best known for his roles in “Fleabag,” “Ripley” and “Spectre,” Scott recently starred in “All of Us Strangers” as a lonely screenwriter named Adam, who develops an intimate relationship with his mysterious neighbor (Paul Mescal) as he revisits his past memories.
Bailey’s cameo in “Heartstopper” Season 3 came about after the “Bridgerton” star reached out and expressed his interest in joining the Netflix coming-of-age series. Oseman said they “haven’t had any other actors express interest” in a similar guest star role,...

Dakota Fanning is reflecting on surviving the “fallen child actor” trope. The “Perfect Couple” star, who began acting at age six back in 2000, told The Cut that she endured being asked “super-inappropriate questions” during interviews when she was a kid.
“In interviews at a young age, I remember journalists asking me, ‘How are you avoiding becoming a tabloid girl?’ People would ask super-inappropriate questions,” Fanning said. “I was in an interview as a child and somebody asked, ‘How could you possibly have any friends?’ It’s like, ‘Huh?’”
Fanning added that she has “definitely felt this kind of vibe from people almost wanting me to fail or something” as she has been in Hollywood for almost 25 years.
“It makes you feel a little bit guarded,” she said of outgrowing (and outlasting) the stereotypes of being a child actor. “I’m just living my life over here.”
And it helped that...

Dakota Fanning recently spoke to The Cut about the awkward and oftentimes inappropriate interviews she was put into as a child star. The actor started her professional career at 6 years old and emerged as one of the Hollywood’s biggest child stars with performances in “Man on Fire,” “I Am Sam,” “War of the Worlds” and more.
“In interviews at a young age, I remember journalists asking me, ‘How are you avoiding becoming a tabloid girl?’ People would ask super-inappropriate questions,” Fanning said “I was in an interview as a child and somebody asked, ‘How could you possibly have any friends?’ It’s like, huh?”
“I have a lot of compassion for people who have been made into examples. If society and the media hadn’t played their part, who knows?” Fanning added about child stardom, noting that she was able to largely avoid the toxicity that so many young performs endure.

Carolyn Bracken, who plays the blind protagonist of Damian McCarthy’s recent chiller “Oddity,” and veteran character actress Caroline Goodall are set to star in Italian director Andrea Corsini’s psychological horror film “Beasts of Prey.”
Cameras recently started rolling in Italy’s northern regions of Lombardy and Piedmont on the English-language “Beasts of Prey,” which is being described as a “complex and thrilling story about the never-ending struggle between the rational and the animal side of human nature” in promotional materials.

It took almost three hours for Emmy voters to render their verdict on the great “Bear” controversy, but that verdict came down clearly with the final award announced at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
“The Bear,” which had won 10 awards in January when the 75th Emmys were handed out, won another seven at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys and four more during Sunday’s show. But then, when Catherine O’Hara opened the envelope for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy that seemed all but certain to complete the FX show’s near-sweep of the comedy categories, she read the title “Hacks.”
How on earth could “The Bear” have done so well with voters and then lost the big award? What did “Hacks” have that it didn’t?
That’s easy: Humor.
Since “The Bear” first came on the air in 2022, it has been the subject of complaints...

2016 was a pretty good year for FX as five wins at the Primetime Emmys for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story helped it to a total 18 trophies at the 68th Emmy Awards.
Eight years on, with new owners in the shape of The Walt Disney Company, it was an even better night for John Landgraf’s team.
FX won 36 awards across Primetime Emmys and the Creative Arts Awards, helped by record-breaking showings for Shōgun and The Bear. It was FX’s best ever Emmy performance and its most significant since the night Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown picked up awards for the Ryan Murphy-created limited series, as well as a win for Baskets’ Louie Anderson.
The network managed to break the hegemony of HBO and Netflix, which have been battling it out for most wins since the Reed Hastings-founded company entered original programming over a decade ago.
Eight years on, with new owners in the shape of The Walt Disney Company, it was an even better night for John Landgraf’s team.
FX won 36 awards across Primetime Emmys and the Creative Arts Awards, helped by record-breaking showings for Shōgun and The Bear. Baby Reindeer mastermind Richard Gadd had a pointed message for the television decision-makers while capping off the show’s big night at the 2024 Emmys.
The Netflix program prevailed for best limited or anthology series, marking its fourth prize of the night. Also nominated in the category were Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley and True Detective: Night Country.
During his acceptance speech, creator and star Gadd offered advice for how TV platforms can improve their fortunes amid this current downturn for the industry. He pointed out that Baby Reindeer, while based on his autobiographical one-man show, did not originate from something with a known fan base.
“I know the industry is in a slump right now, and I know it might put pressure on networks and stuff to tighten the purse strings and broaden the slate, But I do believe no slump was ever broken without willingness to take risks,” Gadd said,...

The first story to watch is how “Shōgun” will perform. The FX historical drama set in feudal Japan led the nominations with 25, and it has actually already won most of them. At last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, which highlighted crafts and guest performances, the series prevailed 14 times. That set a new record for the most prizes ever won by a program in a single year. The record was previously held by the limited series “John Adams,...

FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” can’t stop making history all its own. Following its record-breaking performance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — where the drama series became the most awarded single season in Emmy history — Anna Sawai has become the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It was the “Pachinko” star’s first nomination.
Sawai was only the second actress of Asian descent to ever be nominated in the category. Her predecessor, Sandra Oh, was nominated four times between 2018-2022 for “Killing Eve.”
Although “Shogun” has been considered a frontrunner anywhere and everywhere it’s been nominated, the race for Best Drama Actress was seen as one of the more competitive categories. Each previous actor to play Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” won an Emmy, which made Imelda Staunton’s royal portrayal a popular choice in the series’ final season.

After a tight race up against some of the most beloved shows of the season, Netflix phenomenon “Baby Reindeer” won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. The win for the record-breaking British dramedy from creator and star Richard Gadd was the last of the Tk Emmys it received at the 76th edition of the Emmy Awards, hosted by “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winners Eugene and Dan Levy.
“Baby Reindeer” was nominated against “Fargo” (FX), “Lessons in Chemistry” (Apple TV+), “Ripley” (Netflix), and “True Detective: Night Country” (HBO) for the award.
Based on his one man show of the same name, which won two Edinburgh Fringe awards in 2019, “Baby Reindeer” tells the story of an aspiring stand-up comic that catches the eye of a female stalker, leading to a warped relationship between the pair that forces him to confront past trauma. “Baby Reindeer” also stars Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill,...

Steve Zaillian garnered an Emmy Award on Sunday for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s Ripley.
In his speech, Zaillian said he was enamored by the beautiful landscapes that Italy provided, alongside being grateful for his cast and crew. “Making Ripley in Italy was its own reward. It was like a dream. I didn’t need anything after that,” the director said. “The work is its own reward and I still really appreciate this honor though, and I share it with literally hundreds of people who worked on Ripley, the actors, Andrew [Scott], Dakota [Fanning], Elliot [Sumner], Johnny [Flynn], Maurizio [Lombardi], and all the other wonderful Italian actors, the producers, the incredible department heads and crew—all of ’em artists in their own right. I thank them. The Academy, Netflix and my family.”
