In The Stylist, a lonely and socially awkward hair stylist named Claire (Najarra Townsend) struggles through her day-to-day life as she obsesses over her clients to the point where she scalps them and wears their hair in an attempt to experience just a glimpse of their seemingly perfect lives. When Olivia (Brea Grant), one of Claire’s regulars, reaches out in need of a last-minute wedding style, Claire’s world begins to unravel as she tries to resist her desire for Olivia’s gorgeous head of hair.

After wrapping October with Robert Zemeckis’ hilarious dark comedy Death Becomes Her (listen), we kicked off November with a look back at Wes Craven’s classic slasher A Nightmare on Elm Street (listen), followed by Albert Ray’s pre-Code 1932 “classic” The Thirteenth Guest (listen).

In honor of Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass re-teaming for Shudder’s The Creep Tapes (review), we’ve decided to revisit the better-than-the-original sequel Creep 2.

In the film, after dispatching new “friend” Dave (Karan Soni), Aaron (Duplass) sets his sights on flailing YouTube personality Sara (Desiree Akhavan). After trying all of the same tricks as the first film, however, Aaron finds that Sara is unflappable: she’s not bothered by his pranks and jump scares and seems more than willing to match his freak in every conceivable way

As the battle of wills escalates, it soon becomes clear that these two may just be made for each other.

"Epic Pictures’ specialty horror label Dread presents Ghost Game, following a couple’s internet challenge that turns fatal as they trespass into a haunted house, facing sinister evils lurking within its walls. Ghost Game will have a limited theatrical run beginning October 18, and on October 22 the film will be available to rent or purchase on video-on-demand (VOD). The film will be available on Blu-ray beginning December 10.

Ghost Game is the second directorial feature from Jill Gevargizian, best known for her feature debut The Stylist, which developed from an award-winning short film of the same title and debuted in 2020 from Arrow Video.

Director Jill Gevargizian won a great deal of fans in 2020, when she burst onto the indie horror scene with full-blooded character-thriller The Stylist, a tightly wound and exceedingly well-shot debut. Adapting her own short about a disturbingly empathetic hairdresser with a penchant for scalping, Gevargizian not only announced herself as an exciting new voice, but proved a dab hand at stretching budgets too. And her follow-up, the equally small-scale haunted house procedural Ghost Game, certainly offers more of the same from the latter, although really struggles to make the same amount of impact with its scares.

Which is a crying shame considering the strength of the set-up here; the ‘ghost game’ of the title being a viral trend wherein thrill seekers break into an ordinary house and film themselves living there in secret, while regularly pranking the unsuspecting residents. From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.

After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.

But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

Far too many people are willing to do whatever it takes for online fame. There have been countless internet challenges leading people to film themselves doing all sorts of outrageous things, sometimes resulting in injury or death. In the age of internet culture, people have no shame and no fear, especially if it will make them famous.

In Epic Pictures’ Ghost Game, not too long after meeting on a dating app, deciding they were compatible and moving in together, Vin (Zaen Haidar) discovers his new girlfriend, Laura (Kia Dorsey), has been secretly breaking into houses at night to play the Ghost Game internet challenge.

Zombie movies? Can’t shake a stick without knocking a minimum of 20 quality ones out of a tree. You want vampires? Tell me the decade and the type and I’ll give you recommendations to keep you going for weeks. Werewolves? Well, for some reason, the werewolf falls in with his other Universal monster counterparts The Mummy, Frankenstein, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon as creatures that should have a lot more entries come to mind. I’m not saying that there aren’t any, quite the contrary. I can tell you quite a few must-see werewolf movies that you all probably know but the list is not nearly as deep as the other monsters mentioned above. Late Phases (watch it Here), also known under the stupidly generic title of Night of the Wolf, does a lot of interesting things while being a thoroughly enjoyable and almost arthouse movie...

The Etheria Film Festival, a showcase of new horror, science fiction, and fantasy films directed by women, turns 10 this year, and they’re celebrating accordingly. And Bloody Disgusting can exclusively unveil what’s in store for this year’s fest, along with a sneak peek trailer.

The annual festivities will kick off with a live event in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the Screenland Armour Theater with filmmakers and special guests in person for an onstage Q and A followed by an official afterparty. If you’re not able to attend in person, don’t worry; Etheria reteams with Shudder this year, and the official festival lineup will stream exclusively on the streaming service from July 2 through July 31, 2023.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

I thought I would give myself a break from the dozens of Christmas movies this month and watch a movie I literally knew nothing about except its title. I was pretty sure it wasn’t a Christmas movie and that it was probably a low-budget genre title but this was just guess work.

Bailey-Bond wins the award for feature debut ’Censor’.

UK director Prano Bailey-Bond has won the Screen FrightFest Genre Rising Star award for 2021 for her debut feature Censor.

Bailey-Bond received the award in person on Monday, August 30 at the Cineworld Leicester Square in London. The psychological horror is set in 1985 and follows a film censor who, after viewing a familiar video nasty, sets out to solve the past mystery of her sister’s disappearance.

UK genre festival FrightFest has chosen three directors and two actors on the shortlist for its 2021 Genre Rising Star award, presented by Screen.

This year’s shortlist includes writer-director Prano Bailey-Bond for her debut feature Censor, about a film censor who gets lost between fiction and reality. Bailey-Bond was named a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2018, and met fellow Star Niamh Algar at an event for the selection, going on to cast her as the lead in Censor.

Last month, filmmaker Jill Gevargizian celebrated the release of her feature film, The Stylist, exclusively on the Arrow streaming platform, after enjoying a brief festival run that kicked off last fall at the virtual edition of Fantastic Fest. Now, as she’s gearing up for the home media release of The Stylist that’s coming up in June, Daily Dead thought this made for the perfect time to speak with Gevargizian about her experiences making both the short film and feature film versions of this story about a lonely hair stylist (played by Najarra Townsend) whose obsession with her clients goes too far.

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.

One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

Dario Argento's stunning debut, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, flies onto 4K Uhd for the first time through Arrow Video, and that's only the beginning! Exclusive: The largest genre film festival in South America, Fantaspoa, has unveiled the first half of its program for its seventeenth edition, running April 9-18. Scroll down for the full list.

Like last year, the fest has been forced to run online due to the ongoing pandemic. It will be held completely free of charge with films available to stream in Brazil via a renewed partnership with Brazilian horror streaming service Darkflix. Last year’s event attracted more than 67,000 viewers. While the films are geo-locked, and limited to 3,000 viewers per screening, Q&As and workshops will be available to view anywhere in the world.

There are 25 feature films confirmed to date, including three world premieres, five international premieres, and 10 Latin American premieres. Titles arrive from previous fests including San Sebastian, Rotterdam and Toronto.

LA-based Octane Entertainment has kicked off talks at the virtual EFM on a slate of four new sales titles led by thrillers Rushed and The Boy Behind The Door, and horror titles Superhost and genre festival darling The Stylist.

Vibeke Muasya directed Rushed from a screenplay by Siobhan Fallon Hogan, who stars alongside Robert Patrick on the Emerald Caz Productions and Zentropa Entertainments 5 ApS production that centres on a woman who seeks vengeance after her son is killed at a party.

Los Angeles-based Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American distribution rights to the festival midnighter Dementia Part II as part of their exciting collaboration with horror leader Bloody Disgusting, the companies announced Monday morning.

Taken from the pages of Sam Raimi, and delivering absurd gross-out humor and nonstop mayhem, the making of Dementia Part II came out of a dare from Chicago’s Cinepocalype Film Festival and the movie’s producers Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. The two must produce a feature-length midnight movie from concept to finished product in one month so that it could make its World Premiere on the last night of the film festival. The film turned out to be Dementia Part II, a tongue-in-cheek sequel to Mike Testin’s 2015 original film.
