Netflix is set to premiere a new animated “Tomb Raider” series on October 10, 2024. The show, titled “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” will bring the iconic video game character to life through animation. Showrunner Tasha Huo believes animation allows the series to fully capture the adventures and mysteries of the popular games.

In an interview, Huo explained that animation gives creators more freedom compared to live-action adaptations. She noted animation does not require as massive a budget. This means ideas from the games can be portrayed without heavy constraints. Huo aims to give die-hard fans an animated tribute to match their visions.

The choice of animation aligns with growing industry trends as well. While live-action game shows find success, animation has long adapted games. Netflix leads this genre with acclaimed series like “Castlevania” and its spin-off “Nocturne.” Fan favorites “Arcane” and “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” also premiered on the platform to popularity and awards.

Four U.K. genre-bending titles from Zu Quirke (“Nocturne”), Corinna Faith (“The Power”), Anna Fredrikke Bjerke (writer of Netflix’s “Midsummer Night”) and Ashley Horner will be teased to potential Nordic partners Aug. 21, at the 19th Nordic Co-production Market in Haugesund, Norway.

The curated pitch slate forms the industry centrepiece of the second U.K. Focus, organised by Haugesund’s industry event New Nordic Films, in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI).

The vampire killers have essentially lost by the final scene of Castlevania: Nocturne. Richter, Annette, Tera, and Maria’s plan to destroy the Abbot’s Forgemaster machine has failed miserably, Tera is forced to sacrifice herself to Erzsebet Báthory in order to save Maria, and now the remaining heroes are on the run. There’s basically nothing stopping Drolta Tzuentes and her legion of monsters from hunting down their opponents. But just as a bloodthirsty Drolta is about to strike at her prey, a sword pierces her through the heart. And it’s no ordinary blade that finally takes down the vicious vampire but the one belonging to Alucard.

Castlevania: Nocturne is now streaming on Netflix, bringing with it a colorful cast of characters pulled from Konami's world of vampire hunting. 

Based on the world of the beloved video game franchise of the same name, Nocturne marks the first spin-off from Netflix's highly-rated Castlevania series, and it too is faring incredibly well amongst critics (debuting with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). 

Nocturne tackles the events of the Super CD game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, following Richter Belmont, a descendant of the Belmont vampire-hunting clan during the French Revolution where he must gather a band of strangers to prevent an apocalypse-level event.

When Netflix’s Castlevania animated series first released in 2017, it was nothing short of a miracle: at last fans had a video game adaptation that was not only worthy of its beloved source material but was also a hell of a lot of fun to watch in its own right, especially in its early, Dracula-focused seasons. Netflix got the formula very right back then and its sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, largely nails it too, even if its 8-episode first season sometimes drags in the middle.

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series helped break barriers for not only its medium, but also the longstanding stigma that video game adaptations were doomed to fail. Castlevania gracefully bowed out after telling a complete story over the course of four seasons. However, it was revealed that the franchise would continue, albeit with new Castlevania series within the same universe, almost in a style that’s akin to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Castlevania: Nocturne is the first of these new Castlevania series and it follows Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, and a team of intrepid monster hunters in an apocalyptic struggle that’s set against the French Revolution. Castlevania: Nocturne builds upon its predecessor’s strong foundation and finds a careful balance that will appease both fans of the original and newcomers alike. Based on the 1959 Broadway musical, the Robert Wise-directed film adaptation of The Sound of Music was released in 1965. Within one year, the Julie Andrews-starring movie overtook Gone with the Wind as the highest-grossing film of all time. The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Score, and Best Actress for Andrews. The soundtrack, featuring now-classic songs like “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “The Sound of Music,” spent a whopping 109 weeks in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart.

Blechacz’s devotion to the art of Chopin predates his victory in the 2005 Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition – when he became just the fourth Polish winner in its prestigious history. It has continued to deepen and mature over the years, underpinned by a desire to uncover fresh layers of expression and meaning.
