The killer's identity was purposely kept secret from the cast during production. Star Madison Iseman said in an interview that the cast of the show had "bets" on who the killer would end up being.
When the actors got together for an online panel at New York Comic Con 2021, stars of the 1997 original movie (Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Jennifer Love Hewitt) paid them a surprise visit and pass the torch to the new cast.
When the original movie was released in 1997, Lois Duncan, who wrote the young adult novel (where no one dies) it was based on, stated she was "appalled" when her story was turned into a slasher film. She said, "As the mother of a murdered child, I don't find violent death something to squeal and giggle about." Critics have surmised that Duncan, who passed away in 2016, would be even more upset with this version which has added graphic nudity and sex to the mix.
Brianne Tju also appeared as a supporting character in MTV's Scream: The TV Series (2015), based on the "Scream" franchise written and created by Kevin Williamson. Williamson also wrote the script for the original I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).
Ezekiel Goodman, who played Dylan, is the real life son of show runner, Sara Goodman.
