The girl Antje lives with her grandfather (because her father is a helmsman on a large cruiser and his wife was allowed to accompany him on a long voyage), in Südermünde, by the sea. Everyone in the village calls her "Störtebeker" because in her imagination she often talks to the real pirate Störtebeker and gets various pieces of advice from him. There are many obstacles in the way of her goal of becoming a helmswoman on a large sailing ship. After a lot of trickery, she recognizes the true path and learns to appreciate big and small friends by then.
