In spite of the critical reviews this film has a lot of heart, friendship and healing. The acting was less than stellar in some areas, but had the script been better the acting would have been as well. Graham Green as always played his part well, and he continues to be one of my favorite actors.
This is the story of a real friendship between a wolf and a lion, thrown together because of man, and it you're like me their stupidity will make you angry at times. The juxtaposition between the ways of man who desire to use animals and fears them and the girl who loves and cares for them provides a powerful contrast, and to my mind is one of the strongest points of the film. Worldwide it grossed over $14 million so I think a lot of people would agree with me. It's worth a watch, and it deserves better than the 6 rating that it has at this point.

This is a family film for animal lovers who want nothing but good things to be shown on screen. The lovable pups playing together as they grow up and interacting with this young woman who also introduces them into classical music that she performs on the piano. It's all a wonderful setting on a small island property that she has inherited, enabling the unlikely coming together of these creatures and her desire to keep them safe and away from the grasp people wanting to exploit them. You must suspend all thoughts of time passage and quick changes in location and just allow all the heart-warming scenes to just wash over you.
The Wolf and the Lion is a great family movie for young animal lovers. The sets and locations are very pretty, and the music is lovely. The storyline is unique, although sometimes predictable.
This story follows a 20-year-old young woman named Alma (Molly Kunz), an orphaned musician. After her grandfather dies, she inherits his house only to find that he had befriended a she-wolf and her pup. Then, after exploring the crash site of a plane, Alma finds a lion cub. The pup, Mozart, and the cub, Dreamer, soon develop an inseparable bond. But when they are separated, all seems lost. What lengths will they go to see each other again?
The most notable performances are probably those of the animal actors. The wolf and lion that play Mozart and Dreamer are not only best friends on the screen, but best friends in real life. They are now in a Canadian sanctuary where they will spend the rest of their days together. Along with the animals, Molly Kunz also has a strong performance. She really seems to care for Mozart and Dreamer, and her struggle of how to best take care of them is very visible. Also, Alma is a pianist, and Molly plays piano, too. The sets and locations of The Wolf and the Lion are stunning. The island that Alma lives on has a gorgeous lake and beautiful forests, and her house feels very homey and comforting. Overall, the story of this film is distinctive, but the ending, as well as some other scenes, is somewhat expectable.
The messages of the movie are that you are the only person who knows what's best for you and that animal welfare is important. This film depicts hiding and raising two large, potentially dangerous animals in your home.
I give The Wolf and the Lion 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 7 to 18, plus adults. By Katherine S., KIDS FIRST!

Thanks to watching such films, "kindness" awakens, you remember that you are a human and should be humane.
Today, in our daily race for comfort, earnings, survival, we do not look around, we do not look at ourselves from the side, just like racehorses - only forward, towards the goal. It seems to be just a story of a girl, a lion cub and a wolf cub, but in fact a modern reading of parables about care, fidelity, love.
A good, kind film, one that is being made less and less often.

At first I thought this is just a fiction movie? But at the end of the movie, it said the wolf & the lion are living in Canada? So this is based on true story! Amazing~
So are those CG or are those real footage of them? The storyline is beautiful. However, the acting skills.... so-so.

Say what you will about the original (1950's) DIsney nature films, at least they had the sense to make it 100% about the animals. In this all-too-typical Canadian (gov subsidized) low-budget indie, the scenes with the animals are magical. However when the humans come into camera and we have to deal with the terrible scripting and acting, the movie goes to pot. One critical scene involves an "accidental fall" so poorly done even a 5th grader wouldn't buy it.

It could've been sweet, lovely and a wonderful story that's friendship between a lion and a wolf, if animals wouldn't have been reals. For the movie, the movie's director took 4 babies wolves and 2 babies lions (who came from South Africa, obviously). Nothing shocks you in the fact that there is a lion in Canada ? In the snow ?

To bad some people feel the need to rate a movie according to their own personal agendas rather than the true quality of a film ( which is art) . Appreciate it for what it is, not everyone has the same beliefs. I gave it a 10 to offset what I feel are some misleading ratings. Would love to see more family movies like this...ppl need to get over themselves.

Alma (Molly Kunz) inherits an island home in the woods from her beloved grandfather. Joe (Graham Greene) is her godfather. She is infuriated by scientist Eli (Charlie Carrick) who is trying to trap an endangered wolf. Due to unlikely circumstances, she becomes caretaker for a wolf and a lion cubs who grow up together as brothers.
I don't know how real this is other than the wolf and the lion seem to really get along. Apparently, they were actually raised together. The animal scenes and the nature scenes are impressive. The little cubs are adorable. This would have been a great Disney animal movie back in the 70's. There are issues with the story in today's world. Lions are rarely used in circuses. A better villain is a private zoo. See Tiger King. Also, Eli is right about Alma. It's problematic to raise wild animals like they are pets. It's very much old nature film from the 70's where wild animals are pets with human feelings.

Terrible acting, terrible writing, terrible story, even if it is based on a true one. Made zero sense, awful situations, animal cruelty ALL around. I just cannot. It only gets one star thanks to Canada being impeccably beautiful.

6.9 stars.
I have some difficulty watching tear jerker stuff like this, but most of the tears were near the end. And it's not a tragedy, so to speak. But there are many moments that don't flow between the narrative and what we see happening. I think they bit off more than they could chew with some of the footage and making it work well for the audience. It's not easy making a film with a Lion and a wolf and a woman raising them. It's not seamless for sure. Gets a little clunky now and again, which detracts from the emotional impact. Notwithstanding, it's very joyful and sometimes sad. The adorable animals were amazing, the humans were okay.

I'm skeptical of Canadian movies, but this one is 'extra' Canadian.
The actress is OK looking, with great red hair, but I think she's a poor actor, and the writing is just AWFUL.
Most of the other acting is poor, but this movie comes across as SO cheesy. Again and again and again, near the start, I rolled my eyes so hard, because the events are just SO ridiculous.
If you have young children, they might enjoy watching this to see big cats and 'dogs' (wolves) - but everything else about it is just dumb and poorly written and cringy.
This feels like an effort from first time writers/directors/producers who don't really have much talent.

Looks like a movie for the kids, with no violent scenes shown and an unbelievable friendship between two wild animals - a lion and a wolf - who were brought up together and became best friends. Until you read the end credits and find that the scenes with the lion and wolf working together were not just clever camera work and VFX footages but the real bonding.
If anything, the lion and the wolf were better performers in front of the camera than the actors. But then they do not need to worry about their makeup or hair style! The story is not just about the friendship between the lion and the wolf but between them and their human friend and carer. I am glad that finally people do realise that animals brought up tame by humans are not wild beasts to be set free in the wild and fend for themselves again. They would be like lost pets and looking for their human Mum, and would only fall prey to poachers whom they would trust as they had learned to trust humans.
One cannot help but shed a tear of happiness for the two animals at the end of the story for they are really best friends on screen and in real life too! (unlike some actors, lol) They now live happily ever after together, in a protected Canadian wild life sanctuary.

The entire movie is just humans being humans, and no, I don't mean that in a nice way. There are literally only 3.5 redeeming characters, the rest highlight just how far humanity is from the human race. If the point of this movie was to make me even angrier at us as a species, then congratulations, mission accomplished.
Five minutes in and we're watching poaching, the theft of baby animals for the circus. The best scene was probably the plane crash to put the kibosh on that.
Guns, guns, more guns, tranq darts, animal exploitation, and the only way to escape it is to live on your own private island.

The story is beautiful, but it wasn't enough to keep me going until the end of the movie.
The fact that a wolf and a lion can be friends is unnatural. If you want to enjoy the movie 100%, just turn off your mind. I love animals, but I would never allow two animals with complete opposites to coexist. This is nature and we the humans must respect the laws of nature. I give 6 stars because the scenes with the little lion and the wolf together were touching. Also, the main character was beautiful, although she failed to capture the essence of her role.

There isn't any single element at fault in this movie. The writing and acting were absolutely terrible. I don't understand how this movie has an average of 6.7 on IMBD. My wife, children, and I couldn't stop commenting how surprised we were that we even finished the film. The only redeeming element of this movie was watching the wolf and lion play together. The rest of the movie was unbelievably cheesy (my 8 year old said "trash"). I know some people mentioned the acting of the main actress, but it wasnt just her; most of the supporting cast were just as bad or worse. If you have young kids, they might enjoy this if there's nothing else to watch, but mine didn't (5, 8, and 10).

The sceneries in the movie were incredible and it is a good movie to enjoy with family or with your partner for chilling out without having to think much.
The scenes with animals at first were extremely cute and it is difficult not to fall in love with the puppies. I also appreciated the she-wolf, that reminded me of my actual dog. I am sure many dog-lovers will enjoy this movie.
I wish the characters were a little more "enjoyable" since they are acting in a irrational way in several point of the movie. I guess that the main target of production was kids and not adults so maybe you shouldn't expect too much in that sense!
