The writing duo of Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are best known for their work on comedies and family friendly projects: Reno 911!, Taxi (2004), The Pacifier, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Let’s Go to Prison, Balls of Fury, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Baywatch (2017), Night at the Museum, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. But they’ve also written the horror comedy Hell Baby, and Garant has written the horror films The Veil and Jessabelle. So it’s not entirely off brand to hear that they wrote the initial screenplay for the upcoming horror film The Casket Girls, with Gabrielle Union (Breaking In) on board to star and executive produce.

If you’re like me, you spend a lot of August yelling “Summer is over!” to your nearest and dearest — and they don’t take kindly to that. Summer TV is in its twilight, while fall premieres loom on the horizon after the Emmy Awards on September 15.
But summer is not over, and there’s plenty of new titles to stream in the Disney bundle. Disney+ will premiere new Star Wars and “Winnie the Pooh” titles for kids, as well as the original series “Are You Sure?!” following BTS’s Jimin and Jung Kook. Hulu will become home to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Woman King,” “Smile,” and more movie titles, as well as the home for FX series — this month: “The New York Times Presents: Lie to Fly: Documentary Premiere.” Hulu originals “Solar Opposites” returns on August 12, and “Reasonable Doubt” for its second season starting August...

Avengers, re-assemble!
Variety has reported that Shawn Levy, reliable director of “Night at the Museum,” “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” and “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” is “in the mix” to helm the next “Avengers” superhero team-up for Marvel. In late July, his promised-to-be-potty-mouthed R-rated “Deadpool & Wolverine” will hit theaters and, clearly, Marvel’s leader, Kevin Feige, liked what he saw.
Marvel is in desperate need of a course correction after some wobbly entries like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “The Marvels,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.” There was once a time when the Marvel opening logo was enough to print money and create cultural resonance, but those days have begun to wane, due in part to a glut of Disney+ streaming shows and the fact that “Avengers: Endgame” really did seem like a nice place to end the story. The word “end...

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

Greg Finley, a prolific voiceover actor whose many credits include animated fare like Robotech and live-action projects including The X-Files and Men at Work II, died peacefully February 1 of heart-related causes while on vacation at a family member’s home in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 76.
His death was announced by his son Guy Finley.

Whether it’s the questionable FX, the lead star’s very controversial dalliances, or just audiences being burned one too many times by Comic Book Films, there’s one movie that is all anyone can talk about. And look, I get it. There was a lot of craziness that went on during this production and had more people come and go due to creative differences than any movie we’ve covered on the show.
Warning you guys and gals right now, if you haven’t seen The Flash, you’re going to want to turn back now, because this is where things get Super spoilery.
Warner Brothers tried getting a Flash movie off the ground in the late 80’s with comic writer Jeph Loeb being brought in to write the screenplay. Unfortunately nothing ever came of the property until 2004 when David S Goyer signed on to write, direct and produce a new Flash.

‘Night at the Museum’ has been a beloved comedy for children. In 2006, 20th Century Fox released the first entry to the series which focused on a night guard named Larry Daley who secures a job watching over the American Museum of Natural History since he was desperate to find a job. However, he discovers that the manikins and other objects that symbolize historical figures have come to life every night. The movie was praised for its astonishing special effects, which have made the film a lot more creative in having its children viewers enjoy learning about the fictionalized versions of historical individuals and their humorous and wacky interactions with the guard. The film did an excellent job of having parents entertained with Ben Stiller’s comedic performance as well as casting Robin Williams as Theodore Roosevelt. Few expected that Shawn Levy would strike franchise gold in 2006 when the first "Night at the Museum" was released, but the film based on the 1993 children's book of the same name by Croatian illustrator Milan Trenc has since spawned two sequels, inspired a never-made theme park ride, and even got the Lego treatment in 2020. The original film centered on Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), a divorced father who finds a job at the American Museum of Natural History as a night guard. What appears to be an easy job of keeping an eye on a bunch of fossils and artifacts turns into the adventure of a lifetime after he discovers an ancient spell has caused the exhibits of the museum to come to life.
After the Fox-Disney merger, at-the-time CEO Bob Iger announced a new "Night at the Museum" animated feature, and now we're finally going to see the final product.

Few movies have been both as eagerly anticipated and as deeply troubled as "The Flash." Despite being one of DC's most popular superheroes, bringing the Scarlet Speedster to the big screen for a solo adventure has proven to be a major challenge -- and that's saying the very least of it. The attempts date way back to the '80s, when superstar comic book writer Jeph Loeb was developing a script for a film that would have focused on the character. Yet, at every turn, something has gone wrong and prevented an adaptation from seeing the light of day.

Entertainment Weekly reported in 2008 that Jonah Hill was entering negotiations to join Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox in Michael Bay’s “Transforms” sequel. Hill’s profile was on the rise after his breakthrough role in the 2007 comedy blockbuster “Superbad,” and the second “Transformers” sequel was one of the hottest studio tentpoles in development. Hill turned down the role, and it might have had something to do with his “Superbad” co-star and writer Seth Rogen. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Rogen shared the advice he gave Hill about passing on Bay’s sequel.
As The New York Times reports: “Rogen recalled his friend Jonah Hill’s approaching him for advice after being offered a part in a ‘Transformers’ sequel. ‘I can see if Steven Spielberg’s calling you, asking you to do something, how that’s hard to turn down,’ Rogen told an interviewer, recounting the exchange.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

Notorious mobster Al Capone was a larger than life bootlegger, racketeer, killer and organized crime boss in the first half of the 20th century, who has been portrayed on big-screen and small for seven decades. Here is a look at the actors who took on the challenge. And, if you’re curious, here is archival footage of Scarface himself.

The suit was eventually dismissed. Check out Steiger as Capone in a clip here.

Al Capone is America’s best known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city and an interesting variety of Hollywood stars have had the leading role as Al Capone in the many films that have been made that featured him as a character.
The first film about Capone was produced when he was still making headlines. The main character may be named Antonio Camonte, but there’s little doubt as to who producer Howard Hughes had in mind when he and director Howard Hawks filmed Scarface during the Great Depression. Camonte shares more than the same initials with one Al Capone, who was about to begin his eleven-year sentence for tax evasion when the movie was released...

The legacy of Albert Einstein cannot be overstated — even when we take the scientist’s accomplishments for granted, he’s one of our planet’s most famous pop culture figures, recognizable across generations. The way he’s been depicted on screen has ranged from well-researched takes on the man’s life, such as Nat Geo Channel’s new anthology series “Genius,” premiering today, to, shall we say, somewhat more out-there fare.

When Mr. Robot debuted back in June, the show was pitched as a ripped-from-the-headlines techno-thriller, with the return of Christian Slater to TV as its main attraction. Now, two months and 10 episodes later, the USA network has an unlikely hit on its hands: a visually striking, subversive, and often surprising drama about the dehumanizing effects of our corporate-controlled, internet-addicted modern world. And a lot of the credit for the show's out-of-left-field success belongs to the man who plays the series' troubled hacker hero — the 34-year-old character actor Rami Malek.

Actor-filmmaker Christopher Guest has revolutionized the "mockumentary" format, satirizing rock spectacle (This Is Spinal Tap), stage musicals (Waiting for Guffman), dog shows (Best in Show) and folk music (A Mighty Wind). For his latest project, he's teamed with Netflix to poke fun at a more obscure topic: the grueling grind of mascot competitions. The streaming service announced Mascots on Tuesday, Deadline reports, teasing the movie with a poster outlining the basic plot.

When The Terminator was tested in a California shopping mall in 1984, it caused a riot. 25 years later, Terminator Salvation opened to mixed reviews and, critically for a $200 million blockbuster, it failed to take the top spot from the current box office champion, A Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Not only was it the first Terminator not to open at #1, but with a paltry domestic haul of $125 million, Salvation was the lowest grossing sequel in the franchise. Worldwide, it made $371 million, less than double its production budget and considerably less than either Judgment Day ($519 million) or Rise Of The Machines ($433 million).
Fans demanded to know what had ‘gone wrong’. Where, they wondered, were all the signature elements: the time travel paradoxes, the single, indestructible villain and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 character? Why were the tone and the look so different? Why was it rated...

While Hollywood continued to wrestle with the fallout of the Sony hacking scandal, the weekend box office offered the solace of a movie-going truism: Hobbits sell.
Peter Jackson's final installment of his six J.R.R. Tolkien adventures, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, debuted with $56.2 million over the weekend and $90.6 million since opening Wednesday, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Aided by popularity on Imax screens, The Battle of the Five Armies dominated the pre-Christmas frame with a five-day haul similar to the franchise's previous entry, The Desolation of Smaug, even if its actual debut weekend was notably less than both prior "Hobbit" movies. In its second week of release overseas, Warner Bros.' Five Armiesadded $105.5 million to bring its two-week global total past $350 million.
Jeff Goldstein, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., said the healthy weekend of moviegoing was a welcome respite after an "upsetting and so disturbing" week.

"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," which is the last installment in "The Hobbit" trilogy, took first place at the domestic box office by earning $56 million, bringing its worldwide total to $355 million. Despite the amazing results, both previous "The Hobbit" films performed better. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" opened to $84.6 million in 2012 and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opened to $73.6 million last year. "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" has a 61% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. Taking second place is "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," which is also a third film in the franchise. It earned a very disappointing $17.3 million, far lower than the original "Night at the Museum" ($30.4 million) and "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" ($54.2 million). "Secret of the Tomb" cost $127 million to make, which means that it will heavily rely on international box office to keep loses to a minimum.

Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" took no prisoners easily winning the weekend at the U.S. box office with $56.2 million. The final installment in the second Middle Earth trilogy has grossed $90.6 million so far. That's actually under pre-release polling which expected "Hobbit 3" to do $100 million plus over the five-day. Considering what a rough year its distributor, Warner Bros., has had and how most "blockbusters" have underperformed over the past 12 months, $90 million should illicit sighs of relief more than anything else. It also doesn't hurt that the adventure has already pulled in a mammoth $265 million overseas. Moreover, while there are five new releases opening on Christmas day stateside, "Hobbit" is still expected to dominate into early January. Debuting at no. 2 was "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," which features one of the last cinematic performances of Robin Williams. The Shaun Levy directed comedy pulled in just $17.3 million,...

In opposition to TV’s “Schoolhouse Rock” classic tune, for movies three is not always the magic number. It’s true for most film franchises especially comedies (with National Lampoon’S Christmas Vacation being the exceptional exception). Many moviegoers still get queasy thinking about last year’s The Hangover Part III. Well, how about a more family friendly comedy series? In 2006 Ben Stiller decided to expand his fan base by starring in the surprise box-office smash, Night At The Museum, an all ages PG slapstick farce. Naturally he followed it up three years later with Night At The Museum: Battle Of The Smithsonian, which did enough business to warrant another entry….five years later?! Really, it took that long for all the stars to align? Now these flicks are special effects heavy and during the post production two of its stars, well, made sure they weren’t available for a fourth installment.

<< Continued from 'Forecast: Will Moviegoers Show Up One Last Time for 'The Hobbit'?Playing at 3,783 theaters, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is also aiming to be the final chapter in its franchise: the poster's tagline reads "One Final Night To Save the Day."After opening on this same weekend back in 2006, the original Night at the Museum wound up earning a massive $250.9 million. Two-and-a-half years later, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian wasn't quite as impressive, earning $177.2 million (down 29 percent from the first movie). There's been a five-and-a-half year gap between the second and the third installment, which begs the question: does anyone care about this series anymore? Star Ben Stiller has been down this road before with Little Fockers, which opened six years after its predecessor. That didn't work out so well, as Little Fockers wound up earning 47 percent less than Meet the Fockers.

Eight years is a long time in the life of a child. While critics are lining up to award Richard Linklater for exploring such an idea, a much larger viewing audience unfamiliar with Boyhood may experience a similar feeling of time passing them by while watching Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Advertising itself as the finale of the soon-to-be billion dollar grossing Night at the Museum trilogy, Secret of the Tomb lays it on thick with pretences of finality and closure. In truth, the film doesn’t bring the journey to a stop, and instead simply hits the blinker on a lucrative franchise vehicle that’s always been operating in cruise control.

It's a shock to go back and watch "Midnight Cowboy" 45 years after its debut (on May 25, 1969) and see how raw and otherworldly it looks. The Terminator movies are certainly considered one of the best sci-fi movie franchises ever, but it hit a serious speed bump in 2009. The McG-directed Terminator Salvation cost an incredibly expensive $200 million, and not only failed to open at number one on its opening weekend (losing to Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian), but only wound up making $125 million domestically. After years of the rights being bounced around between owners, finally the franchise is ready to get going again with Terminator 5, a.k.a. Terminator: Genesis.
