Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez tell us how they started a found footage frenzy with their pivotal 1999 horror, The Blair Witch Project.
In 1999, a tiny indie film changed the face of horror. Its viral marketing campaign was soon adopted by bigger Hollywood movies like Cloverfield (2008). Other filmmakers rushed to make their own documentary-style shockers – most notably writer-director Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity (2007), which helped turn Blumhouse Productions into the horror powerhouse it is today.
The Blair Witch Project was the work of first-time directors (and former University of Centaal Florida film students) Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who in the early 1990s came up with their initial concept: the movie would essentially be a faux documentary, cut together from the film and video material left behind by three investigators who vanished while investigating the legend of a witch. On an initial budget of at most $60,000, The Blair Witch Project...

Next week’s hyper-contentious election and its face-off between virulently opposed camps has cast a fearful pall over our culture, creating an atmosphere where political terrors are outdoing the movie versions. Why hasn’t someone made a slasher pic about volunteers canvassing door-to-door at dusk?
This uneasy vibe has foregrounded an uncomfortable truth about horror films: how they often come with subtle political messages that are not always subtle enough to obscure which way they might vote in November. (To be clear, films cannot cast votes in a presidential election.) For example, you could easily argue that one of the most blatantly Republican horror movies was The Exorcist, along with the entire satanic-possession genre. In William Friedkin’s 1972 original, science and modern medicine are completely powerless to dent the demon who has possessed the innocent victim, leaving it up to the patriarchal Catholic Church to take on Pazuzu (and forge...

Writer-creator Joe Barton is probably best known for his work on series such as “Girl/Haji” and “The Lazarus Project,” but those in the know, know he’s almost as famous for all the things he hasn’t made but has been tapped to create. One of the hottest screenwriters in the U.K. at the moment, Barton was once tapped to be the showrunner of the Matt Reeves’ “Gotham Pd” Batman spin-off series that never came to pass, and he was one of the writers invited to pitch on the fourth season of “True Detective.” He’s written scripts for Michael Bay, has an “Amadeus” TV series in the works, and is also the writer of an untitled “Cloverfield” sequel that Babak Anvari is supposed to direct.

Corporate interests will always get in the way of artists trying to tell a good story, and that’s partly why I think comic-books are so damn magical. Even in a medium that’s mostly controlled by a handful of giant companies with strict rules about their intellectual property, you can still see miraculous bursts of creativity even in the most unabashedly cynical products.
For example, there’s the fan-favorite Venom. Think of how many people were involved in the process of turning an alternate costume for Spider-Man (the result of a contest meant to make the character appeal to a broader audience) into a monstrous supervillain, only to then re-imagine the character as a reformed hero once the marketing folks realized that he was nearly as popular as Spidey himself. No single person planned for it to turn out this way, but each artist tried to nudge the idea in a fun direction,...

The chief of 20th Century Studios has revealed that Dan Trachtenberg has made not one, but two Predator films… and they’re both releasing next year.
Well, here’s something of a shocker. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Studio chief Steve Asbell was asked to confirm that next year’s Predator: Badlands would be getting a cinema release. As you’ll likely know, Dan Trachtenberg restored the Predator franchise to its former glory in 2022 with Prey, a storming prequel that as well as being a terrific film, also significantly broadened the canvas for what a Predator movie could be. Trachtenberg’s follow-up, Predator: Badlands is due next year, set in the future and seems like it might be looking to tear up the Predator rulebook all over again.

America’s obsession with extraterrestrial beings gave birth to the alien invasion trope in the genre of science fiction films, serving as both a reflection of cultural anxieties and a vehicle for exploring profound existential questions. Emerging in the mid-20th century, particularly during the Cold War, these films tapped into fears of the unknown, foreign threats, and the potential consequences of technological advancement. These films cast aliens as vicious invaders hellbent on humanity’s annihilation or innocuous intergalactic travelers victimized by our own inhumanity to strangers.
Films such as “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951), “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978), “Alien” (1979), “Independence Day” (1996), “Cloverfield” (2008), and “Arrival” (2016) illustrate how the genre mirrored societal concerns while also probing deeper questions about identity, morality, and humanity’s place in the universe. This enduring trope has evolved, adapting to contemporary issues while remaining a captivating element of American popular films, highlighting our fascination...

Netflix has acquired the spec script and aims to fast track Out There, a new high concept sci-fi thriller described as in the vein of A Quiet Place and Cloverfield, Deadline reports today.
Out There will mark the veteran editor Stefan Grube.
Plot details remain under wraps at this time, but the sci-fi thriller “revolves around a fractured family who must face the most catastrophic day of their lives.” Which does fall in line with the comparisons to A Quiet Place and Cloverfield. Considering Grube’s work on the suspenseful 10 Cloverfield Lane, we can likely expect that same level of breathless tension here.
Grube’s credits also include Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX. As for the spec script that was picked up by Netflix, that hails from Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke and Ian Levy. The Van Dykes previously wrote Don’t Worry Darling, and Levy scripted Pay the Ghost.

What does "Pulp Fiction" have to do with low-budget horror movies? Well, the film's $8 million budget might seem like a fairly significant amount of money, but it's not the kind of figure you'd expect for a film starring Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman. Of course, at the time those actors weren't the bonafide megastars they'd become, or, in Travolta's case, king of the 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. Still, $8 million is more the kind of budget you'd expect for a mid-range horror movie, so it's impressive Quentin Tarantino managed to make $212 million from his off-beat postmodern pastiche.
That's not the only connection between "Pulp Fiction" and horror, either. Aside from the film's often striking depictions of violence, there's a surprising link between one of its stars and an ultra low-budget horror movie that debuted the same decade as Tarantino's film.

There’s nothing like the first time. Your first published novel. Your first Prom. First telekinetic murder spree. Whatever. In the case of the 1974 novel, Carrie, it was Stephen King’s first time having a book published. It would also be the first piece of his work to ever grace the silver screen. Carrie would be released in 1976 on its way to becoming an all-time horror classic. In the film, Sissy Spacek plays an extremely shy and sheltered High School girl who is bullied relentlessly at home and school. At home, her mother is a complete and total nutbar salad who has weaponized her religious beliefs against her daughter. She locks her in the closet with this little coked-out Jesus statue and has for all intents and purposes ruined her chance at a normal life. One day at school, Carrie gets her period for the first time while in the community showers.

I tore through “Teacup” in two days.
The Peacock thriller based on Robert McCammon’s “Stinger” premieres on October 11 and will continue in two-episodes installments, but the wait between them is agonizing. “Teacup” takes place over the course of one harrowing night and day amid a major supernatural threat — the kind of premise and pacing that would’ve made a killer feature along the lines of “Cloverfield” or “Attack the Block.” Ian McCulloch serves as showrunner and executive producer along with McCammon, James Wan, and more.
Alas, “Peacock” debuts in the era of streaming, the era in which a novel’s TV adaptation veers toward audiobook in terms of run time. This is the era of “We’re not making a TV show, we’re making a multi-part movie”, and for a story like “Teacup” that just crushes the momentum.

Kaitlin Olson is back on double duty as producer and star of ABC‘s High Potential, which might prove to be her most relatable role yet.
As the 3x Emmy nominee celebrated the premiere of her new crime procedural with her co-stars and creator Drew Goddard on Tuesday in Los Angeles, Olson told Deadline how the show’s bigger mystery of her character Morgan’s missing ex spoke to her as a mother.
“One of the reasons that Morgan is compelled to work for the police department is because the father of her first-born child has been missing for 14 years, and she does no believe that he would have abandoned her or her daughter. For the horror heads among us, perusing a streamer's genre page can be a goldmine of camp opportunities or disturbing folk horror to keep us up at night, but it can also be home to some of the most tedious stories put to film. Whether it's an ill-advised continuation of a franchise or an adaptation in the wrong hands, even the mighty Netflix isn't immune to acquiring, producing, and/or distributing some stinkers. In fact, they tend to excel at it.

The horror genre has continued to remain a crucial part of the filmmaking industry. Looking back at two of the most iconic films –The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Cloverfield (2008), they had one particular factor in common: both these movies were filmed with found-footage technique.

A secretive project from JJ Abrams may just have landed its leading duo, even if we know next to nothing about The Rise Of Skywalker director’s next project.
It’s quite possible that we might just run out of internet when trying to list all of the projects that Glen Powell is attached to right now, but one of them is a secretive project that is said to be directed by JJ Abrams.
Plot details, even the film’s genre, are being kept firmly under wraps, although strangely, the confirmation that it isn’t a time travel tale is the one nugget of information we have seen floating around. Perhaps Abrams plans to slowly reveal the film’s genre by first periodically leaking all of the genres that it isn’t? Coming from the one of the minds behind the mystery-laden viral marketing campaign for 2008’s Cloverfield, we wouldn’t put it past him.

The movie is untitled at the moment, but Abrams is said to be making it for Warner Bros. He penned the script and will produce it through his Bad Robot film and television production company. He will also direct. We first learned of this film back in May 2024. At the time, it was revealed that Twisters' Glen Powell was in early talks to star in the film. However, no deal was set in place.

Few movies have such broad "you had to be there" appeal as "Cloverfield." Released in 2008 after a much-hyped marketing campaign featuring title-free promos and cryptic web pages, the movie wowed (and to some extent divided) audiences with a prime bit of misdirection: it was a good old-fashioned kaiju film disguised as a found footage thriller disguised as a shaky cam home video-style story.
"Cloverfield" was made during a time when J.J. Abrams was known as the mystery-crafting maestro behind "Lost," not a polarizing part of the "Star Wars" universe. Director Matt Reeves, who would go on to make the emo-Robert-Pattinson-led blockbuster "The Batman," was then known for the college-set soap "Felicity." And while the film's cast members, including Lizzy Caplan and T.J. Miller, are recognizable today, they were mostly unknown at the time of its release, lending the project a "Blair Witch"-style verisimilitude.

There’s a lovely moment, towards the tail end of Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One, in which British expat Eric tries to lift the spirits of his post-apocalyptic travel companion.
To put it mildly, he and Sam have been through the wringer these past 24 hours. Together, they have witnessed the ultimate downfall of human civilisation as we know it, watched helplessly from the sidelines as their fellow New Yorkers have been slaughtered in droves, and had a disproportionate number of close calls with the “Death Angels”; considering that those beasties only just fell from the sky that very same morning. It’s been a stressful day to say the least, even by the Big Apple’s standards.
Yet as they’ve soldiered on through stampeding crowds and flooded subway tunnels, there’s been a tantalising prize helping them stay sane. An incentive for the duo to keep...

"Deadpool & Wolverine" (read /Film's review) is smashing its way onto the big screen with a multiversal adventure that would've been difficult (if not impossible) to imagine only a few short years ago -- but, if things had gone to plan, the version everyone is about to see in theaters could've been very different. While the team-up film is making headlines for bringing Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman's Logan into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time, the two main stars are spilling new details on the original idea for the blockbuster. As if the universe-hopping, cameo-laden extravaganza wasn't already packed full of internet-breaking surprises, that's nothing compared to what was once a much zanier and even more shocking experience for fans.
Reynolds and Jackman recently appeared on the newest episode of "Hot Ones," hosted by popular YouTuber and interviewer Sean Evans, where the pair of...

Matt Reeves certainly has a way with the lens. Knowing exactly how to get his audience to feel exactly what he wants, his directorial abilities are truly commendable. While his most notable work has become Robert Pattinson’s Batman, he has been making masterpieces long before that. There is no better example than his 2008 film, Cloverfield.

It’s “Back to the Future” week at Netflix, literally.
Not only is Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic time travel comedy the #6 film at the streamer, but one of the decade’s most iconic characters is back with the just-released “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” #1 there.
Picking up theatrical franchises isn’t unprecedented for the streamer. Netflix produced the second “Knives Out” film and is currently in production on the third. Previously, the company took shots at the “Cloverfield” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series — to little impact. Netflix has continued some Tyler Perry series. But “Beverly Hills Cop” is a whole other level in terms of previous iconic success.
The 1984 original was one of the biggest comedy hits ever released, with an adjusted domestic gross of over $600 million. A fourth film has been in the works for years, with Murphy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Netflix joining forces to license “Beverly Hills Cop...

The modern TV reality is that the production of a new season of your favorite project can take years. This happened, for example, with Bridgerton and, of course, with Stranger Things – the fourth season ended in July 2022, it is now July 2024, and there is still no release date for the fifth season. All that is known is that the new chapter will be released in 2025.
There is no need to sit and wait for the release of a new season, especially when it takes so long to produce. The success of Stranger Things did not go unnoticed and a number of other projects tried to repeat the formula that was loved by such a large number of viewers.
Some did it better, some did it worse, but today we are going to tell you about a project that can definitely be put in first place among "Stranger Things-like" shows – Tales From the Loop.

A Quiet Place: Day One is the highly anticipated prequel film to John Krasinski‘s sci-fi film franchise A Quite Place. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the apocalyptic horror film shows us the day when the aliens in A Quiet Place franchise invaded Earth, and instead of the Abbott family, we see the story of a terminally ill woman who tries to survive in New York City with her cat and an English law student named Eric. A Quiet Place: Day One stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in the lead roles, with Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, Eliane Umuhire, and Nico & Schnitzel starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the intense survival thriller and alien invasion elements in A Quiet Place: Day One, here are some similar films you could watch next.

In an unexpected revelation that connects two of the 21st century’s most successful horror franchises, it has come to light that “A Quiet Place,” the 2018 sensation directed by John Krasinski, was initially conceived as a potential entry in the “Cloverfield” universe.
The “Cloverfield” franchise, which began with Matt Reeves’ 2008 found-footage monster film, has spawned three movies to date. Known for its innovative approach to the monster genre and its expanded universe concept, “Cloverfield” seemed like a natural fit for Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ script about sound-sensitive aliens.
In a 2018 interview with Slash Film, Beck and Woods revealed that they had pitched their concept to Paramount executives as a possible “Cloverfield” crossover. However, the studio saw greater potential in the script as a standalone project.
This decision by Paramount proved to be a masterstroke. “A Quiet Place,” under John Krasinski’s direction, became a critical and commercial juggernaut, grossing...

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ reviews: Lupita Nyong’o is ‘incredible’ in ‘unexpectedly excellent’ prequel
On June 28, 2024, Paramount Pictures released “A Quiet Place: Day One,” in which A woman named Samira (Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o) finds herself trapped in New York City during the early stages of an invasion by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing. Is 2024 the year of the prequel? Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One just became the best in John Krasinski’s horror series. It’s an earnest, frightening, and delicately layered New York City apocalypse flick that impresses well beyond sound-seeking monsters. Sarnoski throws shades of Cloverfield, the Alien franchise, and [checks notes] The Bucket List into his A Quiet Place origin spin-off, even retaining his devotion to sublime flavors from Pig. It’s a dramatically rich invasion flick that doesn’t sacrifice either teary-eyed emotionality or obscene extraterrestrial aggression, constructing a tonal rollercoaster that whizzes by without any jerks or bumps in motion.
A Quiet Place: Part One is your average survival narrative about a dying hospice patient named Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) who wants to taste her favorite pizza slice—East Harlem’s iconic Patsy’s Pizzeria—one more time before unknown entities eradicate humanity. Matt Reeves believed that he was going to be fired from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when he suggested one crucial change to the plot point. He was brought in to helm the film in October 2012 after Rupert Wyatt, the first film’s director, dropped out of the project. Reeves suggested telling the story from Caesar’s point of view and beginning the film during the creation of ape civilization rather than in a post-apocalyptic world.
Matt Reeves suggested some radical changes for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when he took over the film
However, the studio trusted Reeves’ creative vision and allowed him to tell the story he intended. It became one of the best decisions by the studio as Reeves ended up making the highest-grossing film in the Planet of the Apes franchise.

The trio joins a cast that also includes Jo-Ann Robinson and Cullen Douglas.

For the sequel to Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Matt Reeves was brought into the picture, who, at the time, was notable for his work on Cloverfield. Not only Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ended up being bigger and better in every aspect compared to its predecessor, but it also made a splash at the box office, grossing over $710 million.
Reasonably, the hype for the third film in the trilogy, which was set to conclude Caesar’s story was extremely high and Reeves didn’t disappoint, as the threequel ended up outshining its predecessor. Interestingly, for the poignant finale of the trilogy, Reeves took inspiration from one of the best Star Wars entries to date.

For every Prey or Blade Runner 2049 there are a dozen uninspired retreads of beloved old sci-fi franchises. So a Matrix reboot may not be the best news
Somewhere over the digital horizon, down the rabbit hole and straight on til morning, a new Matrix episode is brewing. After handing us three deeply average (at best) sequels to the majestic original 1999 film, studio Warner Bros has decided to hand the keys of the Nebuchadnezzar to Drew Goddard, whose writing credits include The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Cloverfield. It’s probably a good idea, because the series’ creators, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, have clearly run out of ideas if 2021’s completely superfluous The Matrix Resurrections is anything to go by.
Resurrections joined the ranks of belated sequels to science fiction and fantasy totems that never quite live up to the standards of the original, yet somehow still keep coming.

The action franchise that made Keanu Reeves the highest-paid actor for a project is reportedly developing a fifth film. The Matrix franchise released three films in the late ’90s and early 2000s helmed by directors Lily and Lana Wachowski. A fourth film, The Matrix: Resurrections, was released in 2021, with only Lana Wachowski having directorial duties. As the franchise returns for a fifth planned film, neither of the Wachowski’s are returning to direct the film.
Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix franchise will continue with a fifth film being planned at WB
Fans are not sure about the fifth film, especially after the studio decided to appoint a new director. Drew Goddard, who created Daredevil for Netflix, will take over from the Wachowski’s. However, fans highly doubt that the lack of Wachowskis’ creative minds would help a fifth film.

It's unexpected largely because Lana Wachowski -- one of the key creative voices of this franchise, a director of the original trilogy, and the solo director of 2021's "The Matrix Resurrections" -- is stepping into an executive producer role this time around, since Goddard reportedly came to the studio with an idea for a new entry in this franchise that excited the folks in charge. On the surface, he may seem like a somewhat odd choice to usher "The Matrix" into the future, but several projects in Goddard's filmography lead us to believe he could be a great choice to take the reins.

Warner Bros. is going back to the Matrix.
The studio announced that a fifth “Matrix” movie is in development. It’ll be the first installment without Lana or Lily Wachowski as directors. Instead, “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard will handle filmmaking duties. He will also write the script and produce with his partner at Goddard Textiles, Sarah Esberg. Lana Wachowski, who helmed the most recent “Matrix” installment, 2021’s “Resurrections,” is attached as an executive producer.
It’s not clear who from the “Matrix” universe — Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have anchored all of the prior movies as Neo and Trinity, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra Jonas joined in the most recent iteration — will return.
Plot details haven’t been revealed, but Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman teases that the story will advance the fantasy world without straying too far...
