In 1979, Fleetwood Mac released Tusk, an experimental album that was a stark departure from Rumours. The album was not as commercially successful as its predecessor and, while critics liked it, they didn’t think it stacked up to the band’s 1977 magnum opus. Still, it drew some comparisons to The Beatles. Some critics didn’t use the comparison as a compliment, though.
Critics compared a ‘Fleetwood Mac’ album to The Beatles
The stormy dynamic that hung heavy over the Rumours recording sessions followed Fleetwood Mac into the studio as they worked on Tusk. Lindsey Buckingham seized creative control and his bandmate’s songs didn’t fit all that snugly into his vision. As a result, the album sounded like a mismatched collection of songs instead of a cohesive whole. This quality, some critics said, evoked The Beatles’ White Album.

Kelly Rowland will always have Jay-Z‘s back.
During the 2024 Grammys over the weekend, the 54-year-old rapper was honored with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. In his acceptance speech, criticized the Recording Academy for never giving wife Beyoncé the Album of the Year award.
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics that doesn’t work,” Jay said. “Think about that. The most Grammys. Never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”
While attending the Bob Marley: One Love premiere on Tuesday (Feb. 6), Kelly, 42, reacted to Jay‘s comments.

Taylor Swift’s historic fourth Album of the Year win
After Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year win for “Midnights,” Noah claimed she was the first person to win Album of the Year four times. That is not exactly correct — engineers Tom Coyne, Serban Ghenea, and John Hanes had won four times before “Midnights” — but Swift is indeed the first woman and first performer to win this many times, following her victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” This historic win is a testament to Swift’s ability to make consistently successful albums,...

Last night’s Grammys was a night of predictable winners, surprise appearances and even an arrest.
While Phoebe Bridgers was the big winner with four awards, it was Taylor Swift who took home Album of the Year (Midnights), making her the only artist to win the award four times. This honor was given by Celine Dion, in a shocking appearance considering her 2022 diagnosis of stiff person syndrome, leaving her unable to perform. After a standing ovation, she told the crowd, “Thank you, all! I love you right back…You look beautiful. When I say I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart. Those who have been blessed enough to be here at the Grammy Awards must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world.”

Overwhelmed with excitement, Swift took the stage at Crypto.com Arena to accept her award and when Dion handed over the gramophone, Swift didn’t acknowledge her and looked back to share her joy with one of her collaborators.

As the 2024 Grammys came to a close following the evening’s final performance from Billy Joel, Celine Dion made a surprise appearance to present Album of the Year to Taylor Swift, marking Swift’s fourth win in the category, a history-making feat at the prestigious awards show. Dion’s appearance was notable as the songstress has been out of the public eye of late while battling stiff person syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and impacts muscles used to sing. After stepping out on stage to roaring applause, Dion celebrated all the nominees and reminded viewers of her honor of presenting Album of the Year after winning herself in 1997, she opened the envelope. She chuckled before announcing Taylor Swift’s Midnights. See the moment, including Swift’s reaction, in the video below. John Lennon said a song from The Beatles’ The White Album has some social commentary. It’s also supposed to be a joke. Is it a funny joke? Well, that’s a dicey question to look at all these years later.
John Lennon said a song from The Beatles’ ‘White Album’ was inspired by tigers’ deaths
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John was asked about “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill.”
“Oh, that was written about a guy in Maharishi’s meditation camp who took a short break to go shoot a few poor tigers, and then came back to commune with God,” John recalled.
“There used to be a character called Jungle Jim and I combined him with Buffalo Bill. It’s a sort of teenage social-comment song and a bit of a joke.

Rivers Cuomo has hinted at some big touring plans for Weezer in honor of the upcoming 30th anniversary of their debut LP, The Blue Album.
Weezer notably didn’t celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album, which originally came out in 1994. But now, Cuomo in particular seems adamant on giving it its flowers, according to a new interview with Collider: “We are going to give it its due respect and come out with a really amazing deluxe package with a bunch of additional material, and of course, we’ve gotta do some kind of epic tour,” he said.
Weezer do already have some tour dates booked for the new year, including a handful of co-headlining dates in the UK with Smashing Pumpkins (which you can get tickets for at Viagogo) and an appearance at Shaky Knees Festival. Cuomo not-so-subtly hinted that there are more shows to come: “There’s...

More than any other wife of a classic rock star, Yoko Ono is famous for her eccentric behavior. John Lennon revealed that Yoko inspired multiple songs on the record.

Dave Grohl is just like many post-1960s musicians — The Beatles greatly influenced him. The early songs Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote together helped change the direction of pop music forever. Grohl said his favorite Beatles song was the Lennon tune “Hey Bulldog,” but he praised all the band members for their contributions.

There’s no shortage of songs to choose a favorite Fab Four tune. The band covered miles of ground during their relatively short career. They produced saccharine pop tunes, R&b numbers, folk-tinged tunes, experimental rock, and more.

It’s not much of a secret as to how The Beatles became the biggest band in the world. The easy songwriting relationship between John Lennon and Paul McCartney created fantastic music that spoke to a receptive post-war generation of music fans. Sometimes, however, they wrote separately before collaborating. And it almost got Paul in trouble one time. The police nearly busted Paul McCartney as he wrote “Eleanor Rigby” with the songwriter Donovan.
The police could have arrested Paul McCartney as he wrote ‘Eleanor Rigby’
Though not as successful as The Beatles, singer-songwriter Donovan was a 1960s star in his own right. Typically, it’s somewhat easy to predict most of the eventual Album of the Year nominees at the Grammys. There’s usually a number of albums that, because of their high profile or the popularity of the artist, just feel like they’re safe to get in. This year, however, that list is quite short, with a lot of the biggest names from these past few years of music either dropping their records last season or waiting for the next one. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and eight records will still be nominated. So what are the big contenders with just two months left before eligibility ends on September 15?

In 1968, John Lennon wrote “What’s the New Mary Jane?,” a song that became known as one of The Beatles’ strangest. They had been experimenting more with their music in the second half of the 1960s, but this song seemed to take it too far for Lennon’s bandmates. It did not appear on the White Album, but that didn’t stop Lennon from trying to release it. He decided to put the song out with the Plastic Ono Band, but his Beatles bandmates didn’t let him.

John Lennon never hesitated to criticize himself. He said one of his lousy songs that The Beatles released as a single became a No. 1 hit. John also hit hard at his band. Let It Be became one of their most successful records, but John said that particular Beatles album gave him a dreadful feeling, and not just because of the stressful atmosphere while recording it.
John Lennon said The Beatles’ album ‘Let It Be’ gave him a ‘dreadful feeling’
It’s no secret the making of Let It Be was far from pleasant for The Beatles. Creative differences cropped up during the making of the White Album. That happened after Paul McCartney called nearly all the shots on the Magical Mystery Tour movie and album project.

The Jonas Brothers’s The Album takes a chaotic road trip through funk-infused popscapes, blue-eyed soul, Americana, and terpene-flavored West Coast rock. Unfortunately, it moves with the grace of a sputtering hatchback. While the album’s sheer eclecticism is admirable in theory, each foray stops short of reaching its full potential, leaving listeners stranded in a musical no man’s land of half-baked ideas and missed opportunities.
The Album’s second single, “Waffle House,” was an unfortunate foreshadowing of what would come. The song, which is coated with a glistening pop veneer, speaks of “deep conversations at the waffle house.” It is a misguided attempt to tap into an idealized vision of modern Americana, peppered with manufactured positivity ready-made for Instagram hashtags.
One could place much of the blame on the album’s production, which leaves the Jonas Brothers adrift. It’s not to say that artists should limit the...

Paul McCartney had at least one first after The Beatles broke up. He wasn’t the first to release a true solo album (Ringo Starr beat him to it in March 1970), but he was the first to form a new band. Macca put out two solo records before creating Wings in 1971. The band’s mistakes weren’t private since they had a world-famous songwriter leading the way, but they succeeded nonetheless. Paul wrote or co-wrote all the songs on Wings’ second album, 1973’s Red Rose Speedway, including five that shouldn’t be missed.

The Jonas Brothers have different, fonder memories of Waffle House than what the restaurant’s reputation might suggest. Most critics have fawned over Boygenius‘s “The Record.” The debut studio album for the supergroup consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker combines the creative powers of three critics’ darlings for one of the most acclaimed collections of the year. And you can add Taylor Swift to the chorus of huzzahs.
Swift shared on her Instagram Stories that “The Record” is “genuinely a masterpiece,” and “if you don’t already have it on repeat I’d go ahead and do thatttt … Just a friendly tip to make your life better!” Not that this is Swift’s introduction to the genius of Boygenius. The Beatles remain a popular band decades after they broke up. A few musicians hated the band, but millions of people loved them. They sent several singles and albums to the top of the Billboard charts throughout the 1960s, but three Beatles records peaked at No. 2 in the United States because other Beatles albums kept them from getting to No. 1.

It’s an exciting time to be a fan of sharp, focused music — and if the artists who kicked off Rolling Stone‘s Future of Music SXSW showcase at Acl Live at the Moody Theater in Austin on March 14 are any indication, there are even better things to come.
Spill Tab opened the first night of the four-night showcase with a few notes of deep-rumbling bass, some tight drums, Claire Chicha’s voice, and not much else. And that was enough. On record, Spill Tab is a compellingly lo-fi solo project for Chicha.

Nine years ago, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner waxed poetic about rock ‘n’ roll in one of the more memorable awards show speeches in recent memory. Upon winning Album of the Year at the 2014 Brit Awards, Turner remarked, “That rock and roll, eh? That rock and roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swap.”
“I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules. But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever,” Turner continued. “Yeah, that rock and roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it…”

Netflix is cracking down on “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical,” a popular fan-made musical based on the hit period romance. The streaming giant filed a suit against songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear in a U.S. district court in Washington D.C., where they recently mounted their for-profit stage musical based on the popular album.
“The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical” began as a viral TikTok project, with Barlow and Bear writing songs for an imaginary Broadway musical based on the show. They soon compiled those songs into “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Album,” which rose to the top of the iTunes charts and won a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. More recently, they mounted the musical as a full stage production which reportedly uses dialogue lifted directly from the show.
As the project continued to pick up publicity over the past year, many wondered why Netflix didn’t intervene to stop it sooner.

Fcbd has capitalized on the first weekend of May because of what seems like an annual release of a Marvel movie and hopefully there will be plenty of interest in stories starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but we would be irresponsible to pass up the opportunity to showcase all of the other comic book publishers and diverse selection of comics to choose from that will be made to sample in the form of free comics, as well as hopefully well-stocked selections of their catalog at your local comic book shop, which you can find by dialing 1-888-comic-shop or visiting the Comic Shop Locator website.
