EntertainmentThe representation of Indians in interracial relationships on screen largely remains stuck in ethnic stereotypes. Nikhita VenugopalYoutube/FacebookEighteen years ago, the popular romantic-comedy Bend It Like Beckham released, and with it came this loaded question from British-Indian teen Jess Bhamra to her older sister, Pinky: “Pinks, do you think mum and dad would still speak to me if I ever brought home a gora?” Jess (played by Parminder Nagra) is an 18-year-old living with her Sikh family in a suburb of London, surrounded by a lively Indian community, alongside a revolving cast of aunties, uncles, cousins and of course, would-be suitors. Your college days are said to be the best of your life – fun, frivolous and filled with friendship. But this is far from true in the new “rogue-trip” film Fukrey.
Fukrey is a twisted coming-of-age drama and deliciously hilarious tale of four young, hapless ‘nobodies’ (‘Fukreys’), running after their individual desires, brought together by one dream. Their lives are turned upside down when they chase that elusive ‘get rich quick’ scheme. The film combines the crazy antics and madcap mishaps of four loser college friends, as their paths cross with an array of colourful characters, from a tough-talking Punjabi female don to a Jugaad Baaz college watchman. Mayhem ensues with predictably hilarious and unexpected results.
Fukrey stars a bevy of talented stars in the Bollywood arena – Richa Chadda (Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Gangs of Wasseypur); Ali Fazal (3 Idiots, The Other End Of The Line) Manjot Singh (Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!

Hyde Park, Adlabs deal begins with 'End'
NEW DELHI -- Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment and Mumbai-based film company Adlabs Films on Monday unveiled a three-picture deal that kicks off with The Other End of the Line, directed by James Dodson.
Starring Jesse Metcalfe, Sara Foster and Indian actor Anupam Kher (Bend It Like Beckham), the cross-cultural romance begins shooting next week. It is slated for release late next year and will be distributed by MGM in the U.S., with Hyde Park handling other territories.
"Adlabs wanted to expand outside India, hence we associated with Hyde Park to make mainstream Hollywood films, which will focus primarily on the U.S. market. We were very clear that we did not want to make crossover films," Adlabs managing director Manmohan Shetty said.
" 'End of the Line' is a mainstream Hollywood film," Shetty said. "After having made so many successful films, I am in a position to experiment a little. The primary reason for casting Indian actors is to showcase Eastern talent to the Western world."...
