As I stumbled upon this 2018 Chinese historical action movie titled "The Bravest Escort Group" from writer Jiajia Zhang and director Mengxi Tao here in 2023, of course I had to sit down and watch it, given my fascination with the Asian cinema. I had actually never heard about the movie prior to stumbling upon it by random chance.
Writer Jiajia Zhang put together an interesting storyline, though I have to say that it was difficult keeping up with the character gallery in the movie. The storyline itself proved good, because it was a story that had contents to it and was well told.
Now, the character gallery in "The Bravest Escort Group" was a swing and a miss. You don't really get to know the characters more than superficially, and there are too many to keep track of. So when people die in the movie, you just merely shrug and move on.
The cast ensemble in "The Bravest Escort Group" was good. And the actors and actresses on the cast list performed well to bring the story to life on the screen.
Visually then "The Bravest Escort Group" was good. Not a movie that made a big use of special effects, but there was a good amount of fighting and martial arts throughout the corse of the 90 minutes that the movie ran for. And I have to admit that the action definitely played a crucial part in keeping the movie watchable.
While "The Bravest Escort Group" was a watchable and entertaining enough movie, it hardly is a movie that warrants more than just a single viewing.
My rating of "The Bravest Escort Group" lands on a six out of ten stars.
