Based on a mythological creature recorded in several Malay and Indonesian accounts, the WWII-set Orang Ikan makes a bold foray into the creature film genre.
The Singapore-Indonesia-Japan-uk co-production is making its rounds on the international festival circuit, receiving its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival in the Gala Selection, before heading to the Trieste Science + Fiction Festival’s Asteroid Competition for its European premiere and then the Singapore International Film Festival in December.
“I’m a big fan of creature art and this idea of the fish man, or orang ikan came about,” said director Mike Wiluan. “This mythological creature existed in Malay mythology but it hasn’t really been explored. However, there were many stories of sightings by fishermen of these humanoid sea creatures, cropping up time and time again for over 100 years.”

When you think of actors getting trapped in unfair contracts, your mind probably goes to the era of Old Hollywood and the studio system, when stars worked for one studio and one studio only, sometimes making as many as five films a year for their corporate bosses. This system started falling apart in 1948 due to a Supreme Court case that led to the Paramount Decrees, a group of antitrust laws that broke up the studios' Hollywood monopoly.
Though the Paramount Decrees ended in 2020, the landmark Supreme Court ruling forever changed how Hollywood operated. Of course, actors still sign contracts with studios that limit their ability to choose which projects they take on. Hollywood is a business above all else, and the bosses want to make as much money off their actors as they possibly can. As such, lawsuits between actors and studios are more common than you might think, revealing...

Tiger Style Media is partnering with Paramount‘s Republic Pictures for old-school-style martial arts double feature releases. The first two of the four films released this month are Art of Eight Limbs and The Lockdown. Art of Eight Limbs stars Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in 2021’s Mortal Kombat and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. The trailer will likely give viewers some déjà vu as the plot of infiltrating a martial arts tournament led by a criminal comes straight from Bruce Lee’s famous film Enter the Dragon. However, mix it in with some Muay Thai action and it’s a cocktail for some martial arts mayhem.
The official synopsis reads,
“In this action-packed thriller from a producer of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Ludi Lin stars as a CIA data analyst and part-time kickboxer. Sent on a mission to Myanmar, he must infiltrate a martial arts tournament...

Apart from some sweet nostalgia from Fox’s repertoire of superheroes, Deadpool & Wolverine also featured Channing Tatum’s Gambit. The actor was supposed to play the Prince of Thieves in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and a solo film by Fox, but none of it materialized.
After seeing his phenomenal performance and a behind-the-scenes montage of his training sessions, fans have been campaigning for a solo film. The actor’s performance has been widely regarded as one of the best parts of the movie while his New Orleans Cajun accent has become a popular meme.

In the very first action set piece of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, a chopper gets shot out of the sky, crashing in front of a truck carrying heroes that includes Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans). The scene which follow would set the tone for the rest of movie. After that fiery explosion, there is an all-out assault on the soldiers, who do their best to repel the black-clad Cobra troopers. Alas, the heroes’ weapons are no match for the terrorists’ superior tech.
A funny thing, however, is also occurring in this scene—an element which borders on distracting. The camera focuses less on the carnage circling around the heroes and more on the recognizable IP of their vehicles and uniforms. The lens flies past the nose of the Cobra ship attacking Duke and Ripcord in order to instead highlight the high-tech missiles on its side. Each...

Spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine" follow.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" is finally upon us (you can read our review right here), and like most Marvel Cinematic Universe movies these days, it's loaded with fun, surprising cameos. Some of these cameos have been long-rumored leading up to the release of the movie, and others are big surprises. Midway through the film, a large number of guest stars show up to team up with Deadpool and Wolverine.
They include Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes), X-23 (Dafne Keen), and Gambit (Channing Tatum). Elektra, Blade, and X-23 are all characters returning from previous movies, with the actors who originally played them reprising their roles. But Gambit is a bit of a wild card. While Gambit appeared in the dreadful movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the character was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in that movie, not Tatum. But as it turns out, Tatum came very, very...

Hasbro introduced the world to G.I. Joe as a series of action figures in the '60s. Originally as 12-inch figures, the line was successful for the toy company. But when the line was relaunched in the early '80s as smaller-scale figures complete with accessories, such as vehicles and playsets, the whole enterprise really took off. It led to a series of Marvel Comics adaptations, animated shows, and yes, big-budget feature films.

The first "eureka moment" in recorded history occurred when Archimedes, upon immersing himself in a bathtub, finally understood the concept of water displacement. It was not a discovery per se (the phenomenon had been there every time he went for a soak), but, for whatever reason, this time the light went on, and my man allegedly streaked nude through the streets of Syracuse proclaiming his discovery.
Since then, the term "eureka moment" has been used to describe everything from mind-blowing scientific revelations to unearthing a motherlode of gold — epochal occasions for the planet or an individual. Something so wild you're compelled to yell some nonsense like "Eureka!"
I would not consider, "Hey, let's put G.I. Joe and the Transformers in the same movie" to be anywhere in the atom-splitting ballpark of a "eureka moment." Especially when your studio owns the rights to both franchises, and, well, every kid who...

The popular 1990s animated TV series ‘Gargoyles’, which defined the childhood of many, has been up for a live-action adaptation for a long while now. Now, Oscar winning actor-director Kenneth Branagh is rumoured to direct a live action movie of ‘Gargoyles’.
As reported by ‘Collider’, the news comes as courtesy of the English actor’s hometown paper of the Belfast Telegraph reported that the director-actor will be at the helm of affairs.
‘Gargoyles’ became a very big pop-culture hit in the 1990s, with attempts of adapting it into a feature film dating all the way back to the late 1990s. However, the attempts didn’t pan out leading to the project going into development hell. It was later brought back into development in 2010 when ‘X-Men’ movie producer Lauren Shuler Donner and ‘Wolverine and The X-Men’ writer Zoe Green began working on a film treatment.

Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers about the ending of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” now playing in theaters.
Is this the beginning of the Hasbro Cinematic Universe?
After rumors of a crossover between the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” franchises circulated online in recent months, it seems like the ultimate ’80s action-toy mash-up is officially happening. The ending of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” has a direct callout to the Joes, and director Steven Caple Jr. and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke to Variety at the film’s premiere about what to expect next from the series.
“Rise of the Beasts” is the seventh installment in the talking robots franchise, and di Bonaventura called it “the beginning of a new generation of ‘Transformers’ movies.” It follows 2018’s prequel “Bumblebee,” which took place in 1987, and shifts things to Brooklyn in 1994. For G.I. Joe fans of a certain age, Conrad S. Hauser, aka Duke, is the G.I. Joe. Among the first of Hasbro’s revamped mail-away action figures, the character was created in 1983 as a descendent of the original G.I. Joe dolls. He’s also frequently been situated as the lead G.I. Joe character in cartoon shows, comic books, and finally Hollywood action movies.
Which along with the profile of an actor like Channing Tatum is what makes the opening scenes of G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) so shocking. After leading the first film, 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Tatum’s square-jawed 1st Sgt. Duke begins the sequel as practically a second banana to newcomer Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson). Then at exactly the 20-minute mark, Duke is unceremoniously obliterated in a fiery explosion after being betrayed by no less than the President of the United States.

Lights, camera, and a lot of regrets. Channing Tatum, Hollywood heartthrob, has revealed that he didn’t enjoy his stint as G.I. Joe. In fact, if he had his way, he would have turned down the iconic role at the start.
Surprisingly, Tatum’s misgivings about the script were the least of his concerns. In a revealing interview, the actor shared that studio execs twisted his arm into taking on the role in the popular franchise.

Tatum has been very vocal about his disdain for starring in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra back in 2009. But his recent revelations prove that he did everything in his power to walk away from the offer.
According to Variety, Tatum revealed that he tried to say no to The Rise of Cobra seven times before reluctantly accepting the part.

This was supposed to be the first “business as usual” summer movie season after Covid. Then the WGA strike came.
The Hollywood writers’ strike effects on TV were swift and obvious, like the shuttering of late-night television. The effects on the movies could play out over a far longer timetable, insidiously bleeding an already wounded industry.
Everyone agrees, with a few specific exceptions, that moviegoers returning to theaters won’t see the strike. “The movies for 2023 and 2024 have pretty much been written. In many cases, they’ve already been filmed,” AMC CEO Adam Aron noted Friday on his company’s quarterly earnings call with analysts. He was just the latest in a string of executives to reassure Wall Street of the strike’s limited impact.

Every now and then, an actor is vocal about disliking a film they once starred in.
While the question “Do you have any career biggest regrets?” may be one of the more obvious ones a journalist can ask an actor. the answer can sometimes be extremely revealing.
Many Hollywood stars have spoken negatively about their past choices, and have even poked fun at the role during an appearance in another one of their films.
Others – for example: Charlize Theron – have admitted accepting a film purely based on the director’s filmography, only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Below, The Independent looks at 27 actors who have been vocal about disliking films they have starred in.

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan met on the set of the 2006 movie Step Up. By 2012, he’d achieved super-success with the first Magic Mike movie. The film, loosely based on Tatum’s experience as a male stripper, launched him into being named People’s Sexiest Man Alive.
The actor is also known for his roles in 21 Jump Street, The Hateful Eight, Foxcatcher, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Dog. Of course, there are the Magic Mike sequels: Magic Mike Xxl and (coming soon) Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
Dewan has starred in many TV series, most recently in ABC’s The Rookie.

Toys have been a part of marketing for shows and films for a long time. The Masters of the Universe line of action figures came before the animated series, as we learned in the Netflix docuseries "The Toys That Made Us." The first "Star Wars" film toys were part of a mail-away campaign in 1978 before they were ready to be shipped. Toy marketing has also caused controversy in the past. Just think of the #WheresRey campaign when her figure was left out of a "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Monopoly set.
According to an interview /Film's own Rafael Motomayor did with animation writer Henry Gilroy, toys were a big reason for the cancelation of his animated series "G.I. Joe: Renegades." The show ran on The Hub from 2010 through 2011 for a single 26-episode season before being scrapped.

“G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force.” So declares the voiceover in the theme song for G.I. Joe, the cartoon show that dominated after-school televisions in the 1980s. And by that criteria, Channing Tatum seems like the perfect choice to play Duke, leader of the Joes. Is he highly trained? Of course! Have you seen Step Up or Magic Mike? Is he daring? Anyone who caught his cameo in This is the End would give a resounding “yes”!
But the song also tells us that G.I. Joe “never gives up” and is “always there.” On that account, Tatum might fall a little bit short.
Recently, Tatum agreed to strap on a lie detector and answer questions for Vanity Fair. And to test the actor’s resolve, Vanity Fair went right for the tough questions: “You played Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Come another Oscar season, and “G.I. Joe” is on everyone’s lips again.
Following Chris Rock’s quip at Jada Pinkett Smith’s “G.I. Jane” likeness (and Will Smith subsequently slapping him onstage at the Oscars), actual “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” star Channing Tatum reveals that even he did not want to partake in its sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
During a Vanity Fair lie detector test video, Tatum talked about his time on the two films, starting with the 2009 “The Rise of Cobra.”
“The first [sequel] I passed on seven times, but they had an option on me, and I had to do the movie,” Tatum said. “So the second one, I obviously just didn’t want to do that one either.”
Tatum noted that he asked to be killed off within the first 10 minutes of the 2013 sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Dwayne Johnson instead led the follow-up film as Roadblock.

Channing Tatum has once again made his disdain for the GI Joe film series abundantly clear.
The actor starred as elite soldier Duke in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and GI Joe: Retaliation (2013), the first and second instalments of the saga.
However, per Tatum’s request, his character was killed off in the first 10 minutes of the sequel.
On a new episode of Vanity Fair’s popular Lie Detector Test YouTube series, the 42-year-old actor confirmed “yes”, Duke’s death was his decision, and that “no” he did not regret it.
When asked “why not?”, Tatum explained that he was under a contractual obligation from Paramount Pictures: “The first one, I passed on seven times, but they had an option on me and I had to do the movie.
“So the second one, I obviously just didn’t wanna be in that one either,” he laughingly added.

Before Channing Tatum was able to show off his stripping skills in "Magic Mike," the actor was pushed into blockbuster filmmaking with "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." Tatum starred in the film as one of the main characters from the Hasbro toy line, Duke. Despite leading in the first live-action "G.I. Joe" movie, Tatum has since expressed his distaste for the project. He even once told Howard Stern that he hated the movie, and we can't blame him. In fact, if it was up to Tatum, he would have never done the film. It was not for lack of trying, though.
After Michael Bay's "Transformers" impressed audiences, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" was released in 2009 with less-than-optimal critical reception, and outside one entertaining chase scene, this fan did not particularly enjoy his time at the theater, either. The equally ill-fated sequel, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," starring Dwayne Johnson,...

Channing Tatum has never kept his dislike of GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra a secret, even going so far as to say that he “f***ing hates” the movie, but he tried his best to get out of the movie before it even began.
While undergoing a lie detector test for Vanity Fair, Channing Tatum said that he actually passed on GI Joe: Rise of Cobra seven times before he was finally made to do it. “The first one I passed on seven times,” Channing said, “but they had an option on me, and I had to do the movie.” Channing Tatum played Duke in the first GI Joe movie, and although he returned for the sequel, his character was killed off within the first ten minutes, something Channing confirms he specifically requested. “I obviously just didn’t want to do that one either,” Tatum said. Channing Tatum has already gone on record saying he hated starring in 2009’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” so it’s not too surprising to hear the actor’s most recent revelation that he tried to avoid acting in the movie almost a dozen times. Participating in a lie detector test for Vanity Fair, Tatum said he tried passing on “The Rise of Cobra” seven times but was forced to star in the Paramount tentpole.
“The first one I passed on seven times, but they had an option on me and I had to do the movie,” Tatum said. “So the second one, I obviously just didn’t want to do that one either.”
Tatum confirmed he asked to be killed off in the first 10 minutes of the sequel, 2013’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” to avoid any further commitment to the franchise. Did he regret that decision? “No,” he said bluntly.

Another high-profile Netflix original in January is “You People,” a new comedy film co-written by Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris, with Hill starring opposite Eddie Murphy in a premise that evokes “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” as he vies for the approval of his girlfriend’s father so he can marry her. Barris directed the comedy film, which arrives on Jan. 27.
