Exclusive: Dan Magnante has been hired by 2Am, the production/ management company founded by Christine D’Souza Gelb, David Hinojosa and Kevin Rowe. Magnante will join as a producer with a focus on television.

Overseen by Hinojosa, 2Am’s film and TV production division just launched with a Venice Film Festival World Premiere Halina Reijn’s Babygirl—starring Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, and Antonio Banderas. A North American premiere is upcoming at TIFF, as is one for Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, on which Hinojosa was exec producer. The company is also in post-production on Celine Song’s Materialists, featuring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. Previously, 2Am produced Song’s directing debut, the Oscar-nominated film Past Lives.

Magnante will be based in 2Am’s Los Angeles office with D’Souza Gelb and Julia Nelson. Magnante has produced both film and television, and he spent over a decade at Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment.

Several loose threads at the end of Emily in Paris Season 3 will feature more prominently in Season 4 Part 1 of Darren Star’s Netflix series.

“The Terror” Season 3 has rounded out its main cast, Variety has learned.

A dozen actors have now joined previously announced lead Dan Stevens in the new season, which is officially titled “The Terror: Devil in Silver.” It is based on the novel “The Devil in Silver” written by Victor Lavalle.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television has extended comedy writer and showrunner Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz’s (Gordita Chronicles) overall deal, sources reveal to Deadline.

Under the new two-year pact, she will continue to develop scripted comedy series across cable and streaming as well as the possibility of exploring a drama which is where she began her career.

Most recently, she served as showrunner of The Gordita Chronicles, created by Claudia Forestieri, which you can currently stream on Hulu and Tubi. The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (Hkiffs) has unveiled 26 in-development projects for the 22nd Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf), which will become part of the newly expanded Hkiff Industry Project Market.

The lineup features both veteran and rising filmmakers including Koji Fukada, Hong Khaou, Jang Kun-jae, Qiu Jiongjiong, Patiparn Boontarig, Wang Xiaoshuai, Teruhisa Yamamoto, and Zhang Lu. The projects cover comedy, horror, action, romance and family drama, including seven first features, two animations and a string of cross-country collaborations.

Leading directors Wang Xiaoshuai and Zhang Lu will also be on the ground at Haf, operating as producers. So too will established producers Yamamoto Teruhisa (“Drive My Car”) and Michael J. Werner.

The 22nd edition of the Haf project market will run March 11-13 and sit alongside the four-day FilMart (March 11-14) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Haf is operated by The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society and this year will showcase 26 in-development projects. Peacock’s movie Genie delivered a solid opening for Peacock during Thanksgiving week — big enough, in fact, to rank as the streamer’s biggest original film to date.

The holiday comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu premiered Nov. 22 on Peacock and drew about 405 million minutes of viewing time over its first five days, according to Nielsen figures (the full streaming top 10 charts for Thanksgiving week will be available later in December). It’s set to rank seventh among movies for that week, which typically sees a number of holiday favorites (a la Home Alone and Elf) re-enter the streaming charts.

The 405 million minutes of watch time for Genie is the equivalent of about 4.35 million complete showings of the 93-minute film (which is the now-codified standard for a “view” of a streaming movie or series).

Genie stars McCarthy as Flora, a genie who’s been trapped for more than 2,000 years inside an antique jewelry box.

Jennifer Lopez’s first studio album in a decade, This Is Me…Now, has been set for release on February 16, 2024.

The release of This Is Me…Now celebrates the anniversary of its sister album, This is Me…Then, which was released 20 years ago. Peacock has unveiled a trailer, premiere date and first look photos for Genie, its previously untitled holiday fairytale comedy, starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu, which Love Life creator Sam Boyd directed from a script by Richard Curtis, the Oscar nom best known for Love Actually.

After focusing on Taiwanese projects for its first three years, the pitching section of Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) opened its doors to international projects for the first time this year.

The move attracted 539 projects from 20 regions including Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Iran, France and the U.S. After a selection process overseen by four separate juries, the applications were whittled down to 43 across four sections: Project to Screen, divided further into Feature Films and Series; Animation Features & Series; and Documentary Features & Series.

The feature film section includes projects from leading filmmakers such as Japanese director Koji Fukada, Indonesia’s Edwin, the Philippines’ Sheron Deyoc (Women Of The Weeping River) and Japan-based, Indian-origin filmmaker Anshul Chauhan (December).

Much ado has been made about Doja Cat’s fourth studio album, Scarlet, being an intentional swerve away from pop and toward purer hip-hop. Part of what distinguishes Doja’s flow is her ability to weave fluently between not just singing and rapping, but various subgenres, and while the album certainly places a premium on her rapped verses, it also cycles through a number of stylistic approaches. If there’s a notable difference between Scarlet and Doja’s past releases, then, it’s that the songwriting feels aimless, almost incoherent.

The Streaming Era began with a promise of nurturing shows without fear of ratings pressure and quick cancellations. Of course, that was a lark. Soon enough, the streamers began slashing shows as quickly and brutally as any Nielsen-obsessed broadcaster, and they were all flooded with same complaint: “The streamers just cancel everything! Nothing gets more than a season anymore!”

How true is that really? After all, the streamers are looking for hit shows, just like traditional networks. If a show gets high viewership relative to the cost of producing it, it gets renewed. Otherwise, it is canceled. That is how it has worked since the days of black-and-white TV.

To get to the heart of the matter, Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+) and Luminate collaborated on a data exploration to determine how often the leading U.S.-based streaming and linear programmers have canceled series TV series over the past three years.

Warner Bros.’ “The Nun II” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £1.7 million ($2.1 million), according to numbers released by Comscore.

Yash Raj Films release “Jawan,” headlined by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, bowed in second place with a strong £1.3 million.

In its second weekend, Sony’s “The Equalizer 3” collected £1 million in third position for a total of £4.7 million. In fourth place, in its eighth weekend, Warner. Bros.’ “Barbie” earned £561,118 for a mighty total of £93.7 million. The film is, by some distance, the highest grosser of the year in the territory and is in seventh position on the all-time chart behind “Spectre” (£95.2 million).

Studiocanal’s “Past Lives” debuted in fifth place with £515,509. In its eighth weekend, Universal’s “Oppenheimer” grossed £483,101 in sixth place for a total of £56.3 million.

BFI Distribution has acquired UK-Ireland distribution rights to music documentary Getting It Back: The Story Of Cymande.

In Kôji Fukada's cinema, a directorial style full of quiet oddities becomes the perfect context for such paradoxes to thrive ferociously. They never resolve themselves completely either, a sense of mystery prevailing until the end credits roll, whether it's the perversions of Harmonium or A Girl Missing's puzzle box plot. For his latest film, now in limited release, the Japanese auteur let go of those previous projects' violent spirits, redirecting his attention to a premise that sounds like easy-digestible melodrama. But, of course, that's not what Fukada has in store for his audience

The opening stretch of Fukada Kôji’s Love Life is rich in textures that put the characters’ present-day lives into nuanced context. When we first meet Taeko (Kimura Fumino), she’s playing a game of Othello—a modern version of Reversi—against Keita (Shimada Tetsuta), her young son from a prior marriage. They live with her current husband, Jiro (Nagayama Kento), in an apartment furnished by his parents and currently decorated to celebrate Keita’s win in an Othello tournament. When Taeko steps out to the balcony, she calls out to some of her friends, who are rehearsing a routine to hold up congratulatory signage. Then she drops by the soup kitchen where she works, and on her day off, after being called in to defuse a situation.

The significance behind some of those details and how it slowly comes into focus is one of Fukada’s signatures. Several scenes...

A lot of smaller films are coming out this month to help fill the void left by titles that members of the AMPTP have recently pushed back indefinitely––a move that seems to prove just how valuable creatives are to the filmmaking process before and after a movie is completed and their worth to be paid fairly in that role. Theaters need product to survive, so here’s hoping a return to more independent fare reminds ticket buyers what it was like before the big studios monopolized screens.

Inventive marketing is therefore needed more than ever to cut through the noise. How will that poster of a small film compete with the giant standee in the lobby? It’s one thing to finally get it on the wall, it’s another to make certain customers see it there.

Busan International Film Festival has announced the 30 projects selected for this year’s Asian Project Market (Apm), including new works from leading Asian filmmakers such as Japan’s Koji Fukada, Indonesia’s Makbul Mubarak and India’s Rima Das.

Fukada, whose previous films have premiered at Cannes and Venice (Love Life), will present Japan-France co-production Nagi Notes, produced by Osanai Terutaro.

Mubarak, whose Autobiography premiered at last year’s Venice before embarking on an awards haul across Asia, is bringing Watch It Burn, produced by Indonesia’s Yulia Evina Bhara, one of the producers on this year’s Cannes Critics Week winner Tiger Stripes.

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.

Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp.
