- Ruby Rossi: [signing] Did you ever wish I was deaf?
- Jackie Rossi: [signing] When you were born, at the hospital, they gave you a hearing test. And there you were, so tiny and sweet, with those electrodes all over you. And I... prayed that you would be deaf. When they told us that you were hearing, I felt... My heart sank.
- Ruby Rossi: [signing] Why?
- Jackie Rossi: [signing] I was worried that we wouldn't connect. Like me and my mom, we're not close. I thought I would fail you. That being deaf would make me a bad mom.
- Ruby Rossi: [signing] Don't worry. You are a bad mom for so many other reasons.
- [They laugh]
- Frank Rossi: The song you sang tonight. What was it about?
- Ruby Rossi: It was about... what it is to need another person.
- Frank Rossi: Can you sing it for me?
- Jackie Rossi: We can't let her go.
- Frank Rossi: It's college.
- Jackie Rossi: It's not. It's music school. And what if she can't sing? Maybe she's awful.
- Frank Rossi: She's not awful.
- Jackie Rossi: Really? Have you heard her?
- Bernardo Villalobos: Did you even practice?
- Ruby Rossi: Separately.
- Bernardo Villalobos: It's a duet. That means you du-et together!
- Bernardo Villalobos: I can't do my job unless you do yours. And I certainly don't need a lesson in failure from someone who's too afraid to even try.
- Bernardo Villalobos: You're the girl with the deaf family?
- [Ruby nods]
- Bernardo Villalobos: Everyone but you?
- Ruby Rossi: Yeah.
- Bernardo Villalobos: And you sing! Interesting.
- Bernardo Villalobos: Do you know what Bowie said about Bob Dylan?
- [Ruby shakes her head]
- Bernardo Villalobos: "A voice like sand and glue." There are plenty of pretty voices with nothing to say. Do you have something to say?
- Leo Rossi: [signing] You're so afraid that we'd look stupid. Let them figure out how to deal with deaf people. We're not helpless.
- Miles: I'll text you every few minutes until you agree to hang out with me.
- Ruby Rossi: That's psychotic.
- Miles: Okay, I will not do that.
- [to a random passing student who heard their loud conversation]
- Miles: I'm not gonna do that.
- Frank Rossi: Those hearing bitches want nothing to do with me.
- Ruby Rossi: Maybe if you didn't call them hearing bitches?
- Bernardo Villalobos: Why did you run out of my class?
- Ruby Rossi: I got scared.
- Bernardo Villalobos: Of what? Other kids?
- Ruby Rossi: Maybe. Or maybe finding out that I'm bad.
