Hong Kong: ‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’
Hong Kong has selected the Soi Cheang-directed blockbuster “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” as its contender in the best international feature film category of the Oscars.
The decision was announced on Friday by The Federation of Motion Picture Producers of Hong Kong.
The film, reputed to one of the costliest ever produced in the city, is a visual treat that has great business with its key audiences in Hong Kong, where it broke box office records, and in mainland China where it came close to grossing $100 million. The picture also played as a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Based on the Chinese comic “City of Darkness” by Andy Seto, the film follows Chan Lok-kwun (portrayed by Raymond Lam), a mainland refugee trying to pay his way to a fake ID by winning bare-knuckle brawls. When he...

Sweden has selected The Last Journey as its candidate for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
The documentary by popular Swedish TV hosts and journalists Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson, known at home as Filip och Fredrik, sees the duo take Hammar’s father Lars on a road trip to France.
Lars has recently retired after 40 years as a French teacher but instead of a “third age” of travel, wine and experiences with his wife, he becomes passive and tired. By making the same road trip that the family used to make when Filip was a child, and staging some of life’s most beautiful moments, they hope to rekindle Lars’ spark.
The doc is produced by Nexiko in co-production with Nordisk Film Distribution, Rmv Film and collaboration with Svt.

Denmark has selected Magnus von Horn’s period drama The Girl With the Needle as its nominee for Best International Feature at the 2025 Oscars.
Set in Copenhagen in 1919, the feature stars Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday, Godland) as Karoline, a young seamstress who is left high and dry when her wealthy lover (Joachim Fjelstrup) gets her pregnant but refuses to marry her. When she finds herself unemployed and expecting, Karoline has the choice of two bad options: Give herself an abortion with a knitting needle or work with the shady backstreet adoption agency.
The Girl With the Needle premiered in competition in Cannes and had its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month. Denmark has selected Magnus von Horn’s The Girl With the Needle as its Oscar submission for the Best International Feature Film category.
Starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, The Girl With the Needle riffs on one of Denmark’s most notorious murder cases to weave a poetic and dark fairytale about the people living on the margins in the aftermath of the First World War. Deadline’s review called the film “an unequivocal and beguiling triumph.”
Karoline (Sonne), a young factory worker, is struggling to survive in post World War I Copenhagen. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar (Dyrholm), a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency, helping mothers to find foster homes for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to turn, Karoline takes on the role of a wet-nurse. A strong connection is formed between the two women, but Karoline’s world...

The Girl with the Needle draws from one of the most heinous murder cases in Danish history, yet director Magnus von Horn isn’t interested in retreading a familiar serial killer biopic ground. Telling a story inspired by Dagmar Overby presents fertile ground for horror, but Dagmar’s chosen victims were children and babies, making for murkier territory to traverse. Instead, von Horn smartly navigates the treacherous pitfalls of this serial killer tale with thoughtful empathy, framing the story from a broader perspective for a timely, gothic tale of hardship for society’s forgotten and discarded.

From Aug. 17-23, the charming coastal town of Haugesund, Norway, will showcase 76 films and 21 shorts in the newly renovated Edda film hub, offering two extra screening rooms, bringing the total halls to seven.
“We are looking forward to using the two new luxury halls and giving both the films and the audience a quality experience,” said festival honcho Tonje Hardersen.
Many of the high-quality features will screen in the festival’s main program, including several Cannes entries making their Norwegian premiere, such as “All We Imagine as Light,” “The Substance,” “Wild Diamond,” “The Girl with the Needle” and “When the Light Breaks.”
Among the four world premieres, three hail from Norway, a nation that boasts an enviable list of 2024 fest winners, such as Sundance’s “A New Kind of Wilderness,” “Handling the Undead,” Berlin’s “Sex” and Karlovy Vary’s “Loveable,” all lined up for Haugesund as well.

Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2024 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best International Feature.)
In 2023; a record 93 countries submitted entries in the International Feature Film race. That tally matched the benchmark set in 2020 and equalled in 2021. In turn, that was up by six from 2019, when the category was still called Best Foreign-Language Film, and eclipsed the record 92 submissions in 2018, 2022 and 2024.
In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions...

The art of the thriller is the art of deception, the concealed trap, the hidden heart. In that way, it’s akin to art of fencing as outlined by three-time national champion Zihan (Tsao Yu-Ning) in Nelicia Low’s taut, sophisticated debut: “Fencing is about hiding your true intentions from your opponent” he says. But Zihan’s own face as he speaks is an unreadably handsome mask. He is coaching his impressionable, sweet-natured younger brother Zijie (Liu Hsiu-Fu) in the ways of saber strategy, but he is also coaching him in deception, possibly even sociopathy.
Zihan has only just been released from juvenile prison, where he has been incarcerated for seven years following the death of his opponent at the tip of Zihan’s broken blade during a bout. Zihan insists it was an accident. Zijie longs to believe him. But their mother, Ai Ling (Ding Ning), a glamorous widow and nightclub singer,...

“With disruption comes great opportunity,” Mubi Chief Content Officer Jason Ropell told delegates at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Tuesday. “It brings evolution and I think, right now, optimism in the business is warranted.”
Speaking at a rare onstage interview at Kviff’s International Industry Insights section alongside indie stalwart and Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon, Ropell broke down Mubi’s current business model whilst also touching on the company’s ambitions for growth in the independent and auteur space, which include theatrical distribution in addition to releasing titles on its own streaming platform.
“Mubi is a modern, globally-scaled studio and has all the components that a modern studio has from development through production to distribution – theatrical distribution to a platform, which we own – and sales thereafter, as well as foreign sales through The Match Factory,” said Ropell. (Mubi acquired international sales agent The Match Factory in 2022).

Leading Danish actor Trine Dyrholm, who headlined Oscar winner “In a Better World” and Sundance Audience Award winner “Queen of Hearts,” is to star in four-part miniseries “Dependency.”
Maren-Louise Käehne, whose credits include “Queen of Hearts,” “Blackwater” and “The Legacy,” has written the screenplay, which is adapted from the autobiographical novel of the same name by Danish poet and author Tove Ditlevsen.
Apple Tree Productions, the Danish company headed by “The Killing” producer Piv Bernth and Lars Hermann, is producing the show, and Danish broadcaster TV2 is on board, Bernth told Variety at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
Ditlevsen will be played by four actors in four periods of her life, from the late 1930s to her death in 1976, with Dyrholm playing the author and poet in her final years.
The miniseries starts on the final day of her life as she tidies up her financial affairs and delivers her last manuscript to her publisher.

An Eisenbergs Seite spielt „Succession“-Star Kieran Culkin. Sie spielen zwei ungleiche Cousins, die gemeinsam nach Polen reisen, um mehr über das Leben ihrer kürzlich verstorbenen Großmutter zu erfahren. Der Roadtrip, der als Reise in die Vergangenheit gedacht war, konfrontiert die beiden mit der Gegenwart, in der sie ihre...

This is a slow weekend in an already slow summer movie season, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with spring’s best horror release and a handful of new indies that are debuting on digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “The First Omen“
At a time when many franchises are slowly cratering, “The First Omen” has turned out to be one of 2024’s biggest surprises. Arkasha Stevenson‘s handsome and terrifying prequel depicts the events right before Demian, the Og Antichrist, came around. If that sounds unnecessary, it is — and yet the film’s quality absolutely justifies its existence. “The First Omen” is still playing in a smattering of theaters, having grossed $53.7 worldwide, but now it’s available for $19.99 on VOD.
Other contenders:

The Cannes 2024 market saw a thrilling revival with nine movies — including four movies in the main competition — selling to specialized distributors in domestic deals. However, this wasn’t exactly a return to business as normal: The buyers weren’t stalwarts like A24, or Focus, or IFC. Instead Mubi, Metrograph Pictures, and Sideshow (in partnership with Janus Films) established themselves as major buyers.
Mubi bought three titles in the main competition: “The Girl With the Needle,” “The Substance,” and added North American rights on Andrea Arnold’s “Bird.” (It came to the festival with UK rights.) “The Substance” starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley represents a major swing for the upstart, with one source placing the deal in the low-eight figures.

The Cannes Film Festival will crown its Competition winners tomorrow night and the consensus seems to be building around a few titles.
All films have now been seen and it’s fair to say that things really heated up in the back nine. The Competition section took a few days to catch fire sparking rumor that this was unlikely to be a vintage crop of movies but Emilia Perez‘s bow last Saturday finally kicked the contest into another gear and since then multiple films have fared well among critics. There have been some notable highs on trade jury grids. The Palme d’Or winner is often not the movie with the highest final score on such lists but the impressively high numbers reveal a range of critically appreciated movies this edition.
One of the trends to emerge from this year’s lineup is the foregrounded position of women within the most buzzed-about films.

Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” has a lot going for it on the way to a potential Palme d’Or win: strong reviews, an anguished political call-out against Iranian oppression, and Rasoulof’s own status as an exile who just fled his home country and was finally able to attend Cannes after all. (Read our interview with the director here.)
On the steps of the Palais for Friday’s premiere, Rasoulof held up photos of two of the actors — Misagh Zare and Soheila Golestani – banned from leaving Iran to attend the festival. He’s already shared how the Islamic Republic has been pressuring his crew into convincing Cannes to drop the film, which charts the breakdown of a family after a Revolutionary Court judge’s gun goes missing, from its lineup. This is Rasoulof’s first time in competition. He previously won prizes in Un Certain...

One of the first nominees for the Palme d’or that was presented this year at the Cannes International Film Festival was The Girl with the Needle (Pigen med nålen), a great Danish drama, shot in black and white, set at the end of the First World War and in the post-conflict period. The protagonist is Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne), a young woman whom we meet while her landlord evicts her for nonpayment. Evidently her situation is precarious, in addition to the fact that she has no news about her husband from the front, nor a certificate of his death that could allow her to collect a subsidy. She works in a sewing factory and eventually begins a relationship with the owner (Joachim Fjelstrup), who knows...

Exclusive: Loaded Films founder Eiko Mizuno-Gray and Kinoshita-Kansei Group CEO Masahide Kinoshita have teamed up to launch Tokyo-based production company, Kinofaction, which aims to focus on minority Japanese co-productions.
The new outfit will take a minority stake in feature film projects that have significant Japanese elements and/or talent involved. It is actively seeking projects initiated outside of Japan with strong festival and commercial potential.
Loaded Films, the production company founded by Mizuno-Gray and Jason Gray, will continue to separately produce a slate of projects developed in-house, including Renoir, the next project from Plan 75 director Chie Hayakawa, which Goodfellas has boarded for sales.
Kinofaction already has several projects on its slate, including Poland-set The Excursion, from writer-director Kei Ishikawa, whose credits include Venice titles Traces Of Sin (2016) and A Man (2020). His new project is a co-production with Poland’s Lava Films, which is here in Cannes with competition title The Girl With The Needle.

The Cannes Film Festival keeps on chugging, with more acquisitions, more premieres and an honorary Palme d’Or awarded to a studio for the first time.
The Glorious Return of Jacques Audiard
French filmmaker Jacques Audiard is a consistent staple at Cannes. His film “A Prophet” won the Grand Prix in 2010, 2012’s “Rust and Bone” competed for the Palme d’Or and 2015’s “Deephan” won the Palme d’Or. The last time Audiard was at Cannes in 2021, his smaller “Paris, 13th District” competed for the Palme d’Or.
Now he’s back with “Emilia Pérez,” a musical crime comedy about an escaped Mexican cartel leader undergoing gender-affirming surgery that stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Édgar Ramírez. And judging by the response to the film, it sounds like he has a good shot at Cannes’ top prize once again.
