The characters were brought back to their original designs after fans complained about their redesigns on the Netflix shows VeggieTales in the House (2014-2016) and Veggietales in the City (2017).
At the National Religous Broadcast Convention in 2019, Co-creators Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki announced that NBCUNIVERSAL approached them to write a screenplay for a new theatrical film based on this new series. This will be the third theatrical film based on the Veggietales franchise.
According to Phil Vischer, the idea of "The Best Christmas Gift" episode was largely inspired by the response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that happened two weeks before Christmas of 2012. During this time, multiple people took down their Christmas decorations in response to the shooting because they exclaimed, "how could they celebrate Christmas in tough times?" Phil used the Christmas episode to teach families that the tough times are exactly why Christmas is worth celebrating.
According to Phil Vischer, " The Veggietales Show" is largely inspired by his favorite tv show from his childhood, "The Muppet Show" (1976-1981). The role of Bob the Tomato is largely inspired by Kermit the Frog. The role of Larry the Cucumber is inspired by Fozzie Bear. The role of Archibald Asparagus is based on Sam the Eagle.
While Vischer is a executive producer, head-writer, and voice actor of the series, he does not reprise the voice of Mr. Nezzer. When DreamWorks created "Veggietales in the House" (2014-2016) and "Veggietales in the City" (2017), Mr. Nezzer was removed from the series because Vischer based his voice off of the Oogie Boogie Man from "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993). The Oogie Boogie Man was performed by African American Ken Page who based the voice off of a typical stereotype of African American vocalists. Vischer, who is Caucasian, did not realize this at the time when he was performing the character. When Vischer signed on as executive producer for "The Veggietales Show", he brought the character of Mr. Nezzer back but replaced the voice with actor David Mann, of Tyler Perry fame.
