The far-right news site The Gateway Pundit responded to claims of “bankruptcy abuse” during a hearing this Thursday, over a week after confessing he used the company’s finances for personal expenses.
In April, Jim Hoft, the founder of the media site, announced that his company had filed for bankruptcy after facing many lawsuits about false claims it made about the 2020 presidential election.
The Gateway Pundit has endured litigation by election workers and other people who faced harassment after the site made false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
In a bankruptcy filing, the company said it had between $100,000 and $500,000 in liabilities.
It also said it had between $500,000 and $1 million in assets, later revised to $2.3 million.
A bankruptcy judge in Florida will consider a request from creditors – three people suing the site for defamation – mother-and-daughter Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and former Dominion Voting Systems employee Eric Coomer.

It’s taken a few more years than expected but 10/31 Part III has finally arrived and it wastes no time getting down to business with several faux trailers that range from old-school Eurosleaze, “The Slaughter”, to “Night of the Halloweenies” a parody of Night of the Demons, zombies lay siege to a radio station in “Radio Tower Road” and a pair of slashers “Candy Killer” and my favourite, the 70s grindhouse styled “A Stranger’s Treat”.
As with the original and the first sequel, 10/31 Part III begins with Jennifer Nangle appearing in her Malvolia persona and giving us an introduction to what we’re about to see.

In the days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, organizers of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival quickly shifted gears to offer whatever support they could. Festival director Tiina Lokk says the urgency of the moment was not lost on her or her fellow Estonians, who share a border with Russia and only won independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
“The war in Ukraine has been felt very deeply here,” Lokk tells Variety. “Estonians know the price of freedom and we see that Ukrainians are now fighting a war for us all. It’s a very personal issue among the many members of the [Tallinn Black Nights] team who have been involved directly with humanitarian efforts.”

A hard-boozing caseworker grimaces his way around St Louis in Michele Civetta’s overblown urban thriller
Not quite credible enough to stand up as a gritty, 70s-esque social drama, and lacking the focus of the Training Day-style urban thriller it’s marketed as, Michele Civetta’s second feature is an awkward but passably entertaining blend of both. The Gateway is the nickname for the Missouri city of St Louis, rough terrain shepherded by seen-it-all social worker Parker (a lead role for blockbuster fringe player Shea Whigham). Sipping Jameson miniatures as he does his rounds, he becomes particularly concerned about Dahlia (Olivia Munn) and Ashley (Taegen Burns), after the latter’s dad Mike (Zach Avery) is released from prison.
Civetta, who also co-wrote, is not one for understatement. Not only is Parker a hard-boozing caseworker, he’s also an orphan (abandoned by Bruce Dern’s jazz-trumpeter dad) as well as a former prizefighting champ.

Three friends from small-town nowhere that have always been there for each other. We first meet our boys as Frank’s daughter Crystal (Ciara Bravo) has found out she is heading to university. One thing is for sure the love these men have for Crystal is unshakeable. After a night out to celebrate the bond between our boys becomes somewhat strained. We jump...

I have been known from time to time watch a flick based solely on its cast. Take Sam Rockwell for instance, the trailer could be awful but I’m still going to watch it because it’s Sam ‘freaking’ Rockwell. Recently Frank Grillo has made his way onto this list after a string of spot on supporting roles and the odd leading man performance… So you can imagine my giddy glee to see the man teaming up with The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn for an “action thriller” romp. The movie is called The Gateway and I’m about to get into it for you all right now!

A glum arthouse market may be entering a gateway weekend into happier days after months of distributors — with rare exceptions — pulling out their hair at dismal per-screens averages. That’s because festival buzz is mounting for film after film – from Card Counter, Dune and Spencer, to King Richard and Cyrano.

Set in St. Louis but shot in coastal Virginia, attempting to wrestle tough sociopolitical issues while sporting the neon hues of a stylized neo-noir, “The Gateway” lets itself get pulled in too many directions for any of them to be well-realized. Nonetheless, this crime melodrama represents an advance for commercials and music video director Michele Civetta over his first feature, the occult muddle “Agony,” with improved control over performances and pacing. The implausible but diverting Lionsgate release is launching in limited theaters, on demand and digital Sept. 3, with disc formats following a week later.

Aspiring social workers may want to check out The Gateway before submitting those Msw applications. If you believe Michele Civetta’s thriller, the job mostly involves finding dead bodies and getting involved with violent altercations with dangerous criminals; being an ex-boxer and wearing a gun is highly advised. The lead character is named Parker, and viewers shouldn’t be blamed if they confuse him with the tough-guy thief immortalized in crime novelist Donald E. Westlake’s long-running series.

Sometimes it's the actors, not the story. Shea Whigham stars in The Gateway. That statement alone intrigues and compels my attention, since Shea Whigham has affixed his signature -- a welcome sort of wary weariness -- to just about every role he has portrayed over the years. Known as a character actor par excellence, he steps into a leading role in The Gateway, and the trailer does a good job of showcasing him and fellow actors/personal faves Olivia Munn and Frank Grillo. The brief synopsis notes: "Whigham is Parker, a down-on-his-luck social worker who finds himself in over his head when he tries to protect his client from her recently paroled husband. "Tell me this isn't happening again..." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for The Gateway, an action crime thriller from filmmaker Michele Civetta. Another one of these gritty thrillers about man-returns-from-prison and gets caught up in all kinds of shady deals, leading to a big showdown with all kinds of other crime kingpins. But there's a good guy trying to help, too! Shea Whigham stars as a social worker assigned to the care of the daughter of a single mother, who decides to intervene when the dad returns from prison and lures them into a life of crime. The impressive cast includes Olivia Munn, Taryn Manning, Mark Boone Junior, Taegen Burns, with Frank Grillo and Bruce Dern (sportin' a shotgun). This actually looks better than your average crime thriller, with some slick cinematography (from Dp Bryan Newman). The second half of this trailer also boasts some intense action. This might...

Before the brakes of civilization screeched to a halt, 2020 was shaping up to be an exciting year for me: “Agony,” a psychological thriller I produced and directed in Italy starring Asia Argento, was set for a 10-city theatrical release via our distributor Gravitas Ventures. One week before the April 3 release, I received a phone call from Gravitas’s VP Brendan Gallagher, asking if we should agree to forfeit the theatrical release and shift focus on the VOD day-and-date release that was planned. Just like that, the assembly line of Dcp’s, theatrical bookings and PR halted. The important and heartbreaking movie, which I caught at CAA in Los Angeles a few days ago, documents Smith’s efforts to chronicle the tragic effects of the disease and the Minamata inhabitants’ heroic efforts to fight back. As the film shows, Smith was an enormously gifted, if difficult personality, and had to practically beg a reluctant Life to give him this opportunity, but the results were eye-opening and...
