Ash vs Evil Dead's first real Big Bad is finally introduced in the middle of its second season. So...what now?
This review contains spoilers.

This week, I watched The Quick And The Dead all the way through for the first time ever. The funny thing is, I owned it on DVD once. It’s one of those movies you mean to get around to watching one day, but I was never in the mood for a Western unless it was full-on spaghetti, so I wouldn’t make it past the first half hour or so. After sitting through its entirety with rapt and (mostly) undivided attention, I realize now that it’s one of Sam Raimi’s greatest achievements as a director. Although its A-list cast might be its most impressive feature,...

Far be it from me to disagree with our staff, but I would hard-pressed to name 30 films from 2015 that I would consider among the “best” of the year.
The same can’t be said for film music, though. As predictable as each superhero template or franchise reboot may have been this year, composers keep finding new ways to reinvent the sounds of the cinema. Not to mention that the ever-widening landscape of VOD and streaming service-produced projects has increased the room with which artists can flex their musical chops.
2015 was an embarrassment of movie score riches. In indie horror gem Bone Tomahawk, Jeff Herriott & S. Craig Zahler inject hope and despair into a bleak, cannibal-stricken Wild West, where feeling anything is better than the unflinching mortality facing its characters. Patrick Doyle’s warmhearted Cinderella continued Disney’s tradition of attaching amazing scores to frivolous live-action do-overs, while on the other end of the spectrum,...

The 1997 Royal Rumble was the tenth time that WWE held the annual January event. By this point, it had really gained a lot of momentum as one of the most important matches in the year. We had seen so many scenario for the end of the match and we knew how important it was to win because the winner was guaranteed a shot at the WWE Champion at WrestleMania. If only it was that simple. The 1997 Rumble changed things a lot.
It was a time when WWE had started to gain some momentum. Thanks to the huge roster turnover that they went through in the previous two years, you could tell that things were headed in the right direction.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin became a huge star in 1996 as a heel that didn’t back down from anybody and built up a huge rivalry with Bret Hart. Others...

Cocksucker Blues
USA, 1972
Directed by Robert Frank
Rock critics, like film critics, abhor a narrative vacuum. Blues begets R&B begets rock n’ roll, which begets the British Invasion, and from there, it’s a multi-pronged evolution into hard rock, glam, punk, and onwards into a million sundry subgenres. Each generation repels against their forbears and creates a new antithesis. The promising rise and the disastrous fall of whoever, precipitating the ascension of the next comers. The straight narrative throughline, complete with its obvious conclusions and waves of comforting familiarity, is the ultimate rock journalist catnip. It’s no surprise, then, that rock movies, whether narrative or documentary, straight or parodic, epic or intimate, tend towards the creation and upholding of rock and roll logic and mythos. Hell, Cameron Crowe made both a life and (most of) a career out of finding a place for himself in that mustiest of Rock Myth chronicles,...

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1995...
The year covered in this week's underrated movie rundown was significant for a number of reasons. It was the year that saw the release of Toy Story - the groundbreaking movie that would cement Pixar's reputation as an animation studio, and set the tempo for CG family movies for the next 18 years and counting. It was the year that saw James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan for the first time) emerge for GoldenEye after a six-year break. It was also the year of Michael Mann's Heat, Dogme 95, and the moment where Terry Gilliam scored a much-deserved hit with 12 Monkeys.
As ever, we're focusing on a few of the lesser-known films from this particular year, and we've had to think carefully about what's made the cut and what hasn't.

Whenever a movie studio announces plans for another remake, the reaction among fans and pundits is always the same: Hollywood doesn't have any new ideas.
But we like to look on the bright side of things, which is why we're so happy when we hear of a cool remake or reboot. Hey, who needs new ideas when there are already so many great old ideas waiting to be rediscovered?
With that in mind, we've compiled a list of 50 — that's right, 50! — upcoming Hollywood remakes that tickle our fancy. Because if these films were good the first time, you never know, you might just enjoy them even more the second time around.

Status: The good news for director Pete Travis ("Vantage Point") and star Urban ("Star Trek," "The Lord of the Rings") is that they won't have to do much to meet fan expectations; Sylvester Stallone...

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. How do you put that much action down on...

Often times, movies about religion are nothing to laugh at. From Oscar-winner "Doubt" to "The Passion of the Christ," to even "The Ten Commandments," those stories, with the spectre of God's judgement looming in the plot, required a sober seriousness that leaves no room for jokes.
But there are other, lighter times when organized religion, if not the supreme power itself, are lampooned. Count Mel Brooks' "The History of the World: Part II," Kevin Smith's "Dogma," Trey Parker's "Orgazmo" and even his and "South Park" co-creator Matt Stone's "Book of Mormon," if you want to lump stage plays in there.
The new indie film "The Catechism Cataclysm," definitely belongs in the latter grouping.
From writer/director Todd Rohal comes the story of a goofy priest that embarks on a wild trip to find himself, his God and lots of trouble -- which, from the trailer, seems...

Little Monsters, the wait is over! After almost a year since Lady Gaga first dished out details about the project, her Born This Way album has finally arrived.
With endorsement deals from Starbucks, Google and Zynga's "FarmVille," Gaga and her team have crafted an over-the-top marketing plan to make sure everyone under the sun knows that the LP has hit stores. As one of the year's most anticipated releases, Born This Way is expected to debut with high sales ranging from 450,000 to 750,000 copies, according to Billboard estimates.
Much like her costumes, performances and everything else that is Lady Gaga, critics have noted (and mostly praised) the immensity of Born This Way, while name-dropping Madonna every other review. For a deeper look at...

It’s funny how time can shift our perceptions. Long, long ago, way back in 1997, South Park was a counter-cultural revolutionary of a TV show, an ode to all things sexual and scatological that looked like it had been animated in the creators’ garden shed. Best noted for the ire it drew from parents’ groups and the weekly deaths of perma-hoodied fourth-grader Kenny, it bore all the markings of a flash-in-the-pan success, tie-in merchandise quickly shifted by the million and a movie fast-tracked to the multiplexes almost immediately.
Fast forward nearly twenty (twenty!) years later, and far from having been consigned to television history, South Park is an establishment icon; still brave and boundary-pushing, but revered by the majority, not feared, as much a...
