British actor Jack Parr, known for his role in Peaky Blinders, delved into the process of making his new film The Last Breath in an exclusive discussion with uInterview.

The Last Breath follows a group of college friends who reunite on a Caribbean scuba diving trip. They unexpectedly end up exploring the wreckage of a WWII battleship and find themselves trapped inside ab underwater labyrinth of rusted metal, surrounded by great white sharks.

Parr set the scene for the film. “The Last Breath is about a bunch of scuba divers that go deep diving to this unexplored shipwreck, and they get trapped inside, run out of oxygen, surrounded by sharks,” he said. “So there’s a guy called Noah who I play. Actor Julian Sands (Warlock) went missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy back in January of 2023, and sadly, his remains were found the following June. Just four months before Sands went missing, we reported on a film called The Last Breath, a shark thriller he was working on. Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has acquired rights to shark attack thriller The Last Breath from Metro International.

Written by Nick Saltrese (A Prayer Before Dawn) and directed by Joachim Hedén (Breaking Surface), the film is produced by Andrew Prendergast (Shark Bait), and Chris Reed (Shark Bait).

The pic stars Julian Sands (A Room with a View) in his last film role alongside Jack Parr (Peaky Blinders), Kim Spearman (As I Am), and Alexander Arnold (Yesterday). The movie shot in late 2022, just a few months before Sands went missing while hiking in California. The actor’s remains were found in June on Mount Baldy.

Written and directed by Maximilian Erlenwein, The Dive is an English language remake of the 2020 Swedish thriller Breaking Surface, which is basically the same story, only colder, due to it being set in northern Norway. As such, it’s an effective and engaging survival horror, not too far removed from 2022’s horror hit The Fall, which had two women stuck up a pole, as opposed to two women stuck underwater. You could also, somewhat less generously, see it as 47 Metres Down without the sharks.

One briny-deep thriller that does not have sharks, other aquatic predators or even human ones, German director Max Erlenwein’s English-language “The Dive” manages to work up considerable tension nonetheless. It’s closer in gist to “127 Hours” than most other underwater suspense films, hinging on a similar type of physical entrapment — only the survivable timespan here is of course much reduced, because the imperiled characters have a limited oxygen supply.

While perhaps not quite striking enough in style or incident to leave a lasting impression, this very well-crafted remake of co-writer Joachim Heden’s 2020 Norwegian feature “Breaking Surface” should particularly impress with its underwater photography on the big screen. Most viewers, however, are likely to catch it via home formats, as Rlje Films releases the film day-and-date to digital and theater screens on Aug. 25.

Last year, writer/director Joachim Hedén brought us the survival thriller Breaking Surface (watch it Here), about a woman struggling to save her sister, who was trapped underwater by a rockslide in the icy waters of Norway. Now Hedén is in production on another thriller about diving – but this time around, the threat to the divers are sharks. Filming in Belgium, the shark thriller may or may not end up being called The Last Breath. The Wreck has also come up as a potential title. Exclusive: In an interesting international tie-up, UK sales firm Protagonist Pictures and Germany’s 7500 and Stowaway producer Augenschein are teaming up to co-represent worldwide rights on select English-language movies.

Protagonist will serve as executive producers on the films in the new partnership and work with Augenschein to source finance for the projects. The companies will invest a portion of the funds generated by the sales into the co-development of select projects, with the aim of building a co-production slate.

The strategic alliance is not fully exclusive and will not prevent either company from continuing to work with others.

This is a smart move to bolster prominence in a market in which the streamers are increasingly dominant. We’ve heard for a while about the potential for sellers and distributors teaming up to increase their pulling power and distribution footprints.

New projects by Komplizen Film, augenschein Filmproduktion, X Filme and Gaumont are among 16 films and TV series awarded a total of more than €9.6m ($11.5m) in production funding by North Rhine-Westphalia’s regional film fund Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw in its first funding session of 2021.

The largest single award to a feature, €1m ($1.19m), went to augenschein Filmproduktion’s English-language survival drama The Dive, based on Swedish writer-director Joachim Hedén’s Breaking Surface, which will be directed by Maximilian Erlenwein in Sardinia and Germany later this year.

Both films won three prizes each at Sweden’s top film awards.
