Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.
Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. The 21st century is when everything changes.
British science fiction has been a lot of things. It was both cheesier and campier than its American counterpart, and yet also darker, grittier, and less afraid to tackle grown-up themes and bleaker outcomes. It had been a joke, and critically acclaimed, and it had all but died off except for some under-the-radar contenders.
And then something major happened: Doctor Who came back. It was always going to happen eventually – just look how many times The Tomorrow People has been remade. But Doctor Who didn’t just come back, it came back and became the biggest show in the country, on purpose.
Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

There’s an elite tier of TV dramas that stay with you, vividly, for decades after they air, and seventies-set sci-fi crime drama Life on Mars was the perfect example. So fervent was the show’s fanbase, that even 15 years after it aired – introducing us to detective Sam Tyler (Grace’s John Simm), who has a car crash in 2006 and wakes up mysteriously trapped in 1973 – the news of a planned revival during a lockdown live tweet-along in 2020 was enthusiastically received.
This revival was later fittingly dubbed Lazarus – once again named after a David Bowie song, like Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes – but we’ve now received the sad confirmation from the show’s creators that the reboot won’t be going ahead after all:
It is with a heavy heart that the creators of #LifeOnMars have confirmed that the highly anticipated revival show, #Lazarus, will no longer be moving forward.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

Five years after the release of David Bowie’s first masterpiece, Hunky Dory — which replaced the perception of Bowie as a one-hit space oddity with the idea Bowie as an ever-ch-ch-changing moon-age messiah — he offered up some characteristic mythmaking. In a 1976 Melody Maker interview, Bowie claimed Hunky Dory‘s “Song for Bob Dylan,” a piss-take extraordinaire that Bowie had shrugged off by saying it was how “some” people saw Dylan, in fact, “laid out what I wanted to do in rock.” “It was at that period that I said, ‘Ok,...

Brett Morgen’s “Moonage Daydream,” a freewheeling documentary about David Bowie, doesn’t offer a chronology of the life of the late pop icon. Rather it provides a fever dream of sound and vision, with songs torn apart, reimagined and reassembled in ways that reflect its subject’s chameleonic music and art.
The doc, out now in IMAX theaters, was a labor of love for Morgen that took four years to assemble and edit. It was another 18 months constructing the ambitious soundtrack, which required the talents of the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” team of Ventura, Calif.-based rerecording mixer Paul Massey (with David Giammarco); London-based supervising sound and music editor John Warhurst and supervising sound editor Nina Hartstone; and Dolby Atmos Music Studios.
Veteran mixer Massey recommended Warhurst and Hartstone to Morgen. “We know instinctively what each other is about to do,” Massey explains.

As much as the original "Orphan Black" series relied on the multifaceted talent of star Tatiana Maslany, the series was never just a one-woman show. While the current "She-Hulk" actor was doing her thing and embodying multiple different characters with widely divergent personalities, she was assisted by a strong supporting cast made up of the likes of Jordan Gavaris' Felix and especially Maria Doyle Kennedy's mother figure, Siobhan. The previously announced spinoff series, titled "Orphan Black: Echoes," appears to be taking this to heart and is off to a strong start with its newest casting.

Apple TV+ has given an eight-episode series order to a one-hour drama inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel The Buccaneers, with Kristine Froseth (The Assistant), Alisha Boe (When You Finish Saving The World), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club), Imogen Waterhouse (The Outpost) and Mia Threapleton (Shadows) cast as the buccaneers.
Written by series creator Katherine Jakeways and directed by BAFTA winner Susanna White, the as-yet untitled series is currently in production in Scotland.
The official logline: Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. A group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition.

Chicago – As a TV and Movie Star, Sally Kellerman may not be a household name, but as an influencer in the “New American Cinema” of the 1970s she was everywhere. In addition, her TV appearances in the 1960s featured a variety of roles in many of the iconic series of the era, including the original “Star Trek.” She’s probably best known for her movie role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in ‘Mash’ (1970), for which she scored an Oscar nomination. Kellerman died on February 24th, 2022, at age 84.
Sally Claire Kellerman was born in Long Beach, California, and attended Hollywood High School, where her singing voice got noticed by Verve Records … but at the time she was too shy to take the offer. She took on acting classes from noted instructor Jeff Corey in Los Angeles, with classmates like Jack Nicholson and Dean Stockwell. Her first film role was in...

David Bowie’s catalog has been acquired by Warner Chappell Music, extending a recent string of high-profile music rights deals.
Financial terms were not officially disclosed, but press reports pegged the value at more than $250 million. The rise of streaming as an economic engine, along with the mushrooming array of content into which music can be incorporated, has pushed catalog prices higher. Recent deals have been sewn up by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and the estate of James Brown, among many other artists.
This agreement follows one reached last year between Warner Music Group (parent of Warner Chappell) and the Bowie estate. Under that 2021 deal, Warner Music has licensed worldwide rights to Bowie’s recorded music catalog from 1968.
The global rights deal covers the entire body of work of Bowie, who died of liver cancer in 2016. The catalog includes songs like “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Starman,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fame,...

Gaumont U.K. has swooped on rights for Greg Buchanan’s debut literary thriller “Sixteen Horses” after a bidding war, and will develop the novel as a drama series.
The studio pursued the book for two years after being snared by the first chapter in 2018. “Sixteen Horses” is published by Mantle Books/Pan Macmillan and set for release in the U.K. on April 29 and July 20 in the U.S. via Flatiron Books. It is already generating buzz, having been picked as one of the literary titles to be covered in BBC Two’s next series of “Between The Covers.”

Exclusive: Asa Butterfield should have been shooting Season 3 of Sex Education when he sat down with Deadline last month, but like so many other things, the Netflix hit series has been put on ice by coronavirus. His loss was our gain.
Netflix has a hopeful August shoot date, but in the meantime, London-based Butterfield has been occupying himself reading scripts, building a videogame, devouring Mad Men, and writing his first TV script. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a man who has been busy all of his life has remained productive during lockdown.
Butterfield has been on our screens since he was eight years old, starting out on British TV shows like Ashes To Ashes, he soon found himself leading two features in the shape of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Since then, he has worked with the likes of Harrison Ford on Ender’s Game...

Producer Gareth Neame and writer Julian Fellowes struck Emmy gold with their last collaboration, “Downton Abbey.” That historical drama ran for six seasons and spawned a hit movie in 2019. The pair have reunited for “Belgravia,” a limited series based on Fellowes’ serialized novel of the same name that is airing on Epix.
Neame, who is the managing director of the production company Carnival Films, was delighted to get the chance to work again with Fellowes. But unlike “Downton Abbey,” where he had the idea and approached the Oscar-winning screenwriter (“Gosford Park), it was Fellowes who came up with this story. “Julian said I won’t show it to anyone else until you’ve read the book. It is a fun, accessible read with brilliantly drawn characters. It is dramatically different from ‘Downton’ but it has the comedy of manners and social observation that Julian does so brilliantly.”

Fresh from the success of the “Downton Abbey” film, Oscar and Emmy winner Julian Fellowes returns with “Belgravia,” a new limited series on Epix that he’s adapted from his 2016 best-selling novel. Set in the well-heeled London neighborhood in the 1840s, the story chronicles the lives of the aristocratic Bellasise family and the upwardly mobile Trenchards.
Epix is rolling out this six-parter weekly with a new episode debuting every Sunday night. But Emmy voters don’t have to wait to see how the story unfolds – they can visit the Epix Fyc site to watch all six episodes now. “Belgravia” was directed by two-time BAFTA nominee John Alexander. With just one helmer for all the episodes, “Belgravia” has the feel of a film. That feeling is underscored by composer John Lunn, who won two Emmys for his work on “Downton Abbey.”

Back in February (remember February? Pubs and high streets and butterflying blithely in and out of shops and cafes as carefree as a 19th century Parisian flaneur? I digress), Den of Geek ran an interview with Life on Mars co-creator Matthew Graham.
Speaking with us to mark the forthcoming tenth anniversary of the Ashes to Ashes finale, Graham revisited his and Ashley Pharoah’s cult BBC sci-fi crime shows, and bemoaned the lack of a proper ending for John Simm’s character Di Sam Tyler.
“We never got to tie up John,” said Graham, referencing John Simm’s premature exit from the role after two series.
A revival idea however, that would give Di Sam Tyler a final exit and close the Life on Mars door for good, was in the works.

Set in the well-heeled London neighborhood in the 1840s, the story chronicles the lives of the aristocratic Bellasise family and the upwardly mobile Trenchards. The plot pivots on one eventful night a quarter-century prior when, on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, British society gathered in Brussels for the Duchess of Richmond’s ball (Thackeray set the climax of his classic novel “Vanity Fair” there as well.)
For Sophia Trenchard (Emily Reid), daughter of the chief supplier to the British Army, this one night changes her destiny. Her fate becomes intertwined with that of the Bellasise brood, much as Matthew’s did with the Crawley clan in “Downton.

Jenny Hval explores the meaning of motherhood in the surreal new video for “Accident.” The track is the third single off Hval’s upcoming LP The Practice of Love, out September 13th via Sacred Bones Records.
Directed by Hval’s longtime collaborator Zia Anger, the video stars Anger’s mother Barbara acting out the lyrics to the song. “Once she was a mystery of life,” Hval sings. “Now she is skyping with her friend/They are both childless/It rings a hollow tone: childless…she found stretch mark cream in an Airbnb bathroom.

The current season of The 100 wouldn't be as memorable if it wasn't for a character like Josephine Lightbourne, hallowed be her name, defining it.
The twist though came from all the different takes that the audience got on the character, with multiple actors taking on that role.
But it was the original scene-stealing actress, Sara Thompson, who first introduced the ruthless and fascinating Josephine that would inflict total chaos on our favorite female lead.
Sara managed to intrigue us with a simple flashback, and from then on we got the privilege of seeing her grace our screens in a unique portrayal of Josephine in her shared mind-space with Clarke Griffin.
And while Josephine was killed by the joint effort of Clarke and Bellamy (and Gabriel) during The 100 Season 6 Episode 10, her legacy still likes on and so does the hope that we will see her again.

Happy birthday to Stevie Nicks’ best song ever, “Ooh My Love.” It’s a buried treasure in her legendary career — never a hit, not even a single. She’s never sung it live. Just a deep cut from her most tragically underrated solo album, The Other Side of the Mirror, released 30 years ago, in the last days of May 1989. The album fell through the cracks — nobody was really checking for solo Stevie in the late Eighties. But it’s prized by hardcore Stevie freaks, especially “Ooh My Love.” For some of us,...
