Apple TV+ today announced a season two renewal for “Silo,” the acclaimed, world-building drama based on Hugh Howey’s New York Times bestselling trilogy of dystopian novels. Created by Emmy-nominated screenwriter Graham Yost, who also serves as showrunner, and starring and executive produced by Rebecca Ferguson, the eighth episode of “Silo” premieres this Friday on Apple TV+.
Since its global premiere on May 5, “Silo” was quickly hailed as a “riveting and equally start-studded,” “must-watch” series and “simply transcendent sci-fi TV.” Week-to-week, the series drives growing viewership and, in addition to quickly reaching Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes, has landed acclaim for its “rich and compelling” world-building elements, as well as the “incredible” performance by Ferguson, who “brings an understated gravitas” to the lead role.

After three features which focused on Japanese media, society and the cult surrounding his own persona, director Takeshi Kitano decided to return to the yakuza-genre with “Outrage”, which was the start of a trilogy of movies about the inner turmoil of a criminal syndicate. Given the commercial failure of works such as “Takeshis’” and “Achilles and the Tortoise”, this decision was perhaps also fueled by the idea of winning back the kind of audience that got to know the filmmaker through “Sonatine”, “Brother” or “Hana-Bi”. While this premise does not actually sound like “Outrage” might be Kitano’s passion project, the movie itself, along with its successors, is easily one of the best works of the director and, at the very least, another look at the connections of organized crime and society.

Ray Liotta, the intense actor from New Jersey best known for his turn as the hustler turned mob rat Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas, has died. He was 67.
Publicist Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor died Wednesday night or early Thursday in his sleep in his hotel room while in the Dominican Republic making the movie Dangerous Waters. His fiancée, Jacy Nittolo, was with him. He had begun work on the film about a week ago.
The boyish, blue-eyed Liotta also was memorable as Ray Sinclair, the violent ex-convict husband of Melanie Griffith’s character, in Jonathan Demme’s Something Wild (1986); as the disgraced Chicago White Sox baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson in the Kevin Costner starrer Field of Dreams (1989); and as the corrupt cop Matt Wozniak on the 2016-18 NBC cop drama Shades of Blue, opposite Jennifer Lopez.

Whereas Takeshi Kitano’s ninth feature as a director seems like a return to the yakuza genre, and thus characters and themes he had already explored in works like “Sonatine”, “Violent Cop” and “Hana-Bi”, the project itself marks a fundamental turning point in the career of the filmmaker. For a long time, he and producer Masayuki Mori had been negotiating with US-American producer Jeremy Thomas for “Brother”, a film whose story would be set in both Japan and the USA, more specifically Tokyo and Los Angeles. As Thomas puts it, the greatest challenge was to make sure Kitano would have the same working conditions in the United States he was accustomed to from his works in Japan. Eventually, “Brother” began filming in late 1999 and was finished in early 2000, and thus became an entry into the director’s filmography which seems to divide his fans to this day.

Takeshi Kitano is one of the most recognizable contemporary Japanese filmmakers internationally, with films like “Sonatine” and “Hana-bi” having screened in festivals all over the world and netting numerous awards, Venice’s Golden Lion included. However, before becoming an director in 1989 with “Violent Cop”, Kitano also had a significant career as an actor (among other capacities) that reaches as far in as 1969, and currently numbers 68 credits to his name. This list is a celebration of his work as an actor. In case you are wondering, no, “Johnny Mnemonic” and “Ghost in the Shell” are not among them, and yes, the order of films is completely random

With a long weekend now upon us, folks are no doubt going to be seeking out fresh content to dig into and though today – and the next few days – are actually a bit light on new movies and TV shows when it comes to the major streaming services, there’s still some stuff worth checking out.
Of course, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO Max, in particular, just delivered massive drops to their subscribers on the first of the month, with each platform bringing a ton – and we do mean a ton – of new arrivals. So, it’s understandable that July 3rd, 4th and 5th may be a bit on the light side.
But again, there’s enough here that you should find something to satisfy you. And if you don’t, well, like we just said, July 1st brought with it more than enough to keep you busy.

Despite now being typecast as a director of family dramas, Hirokazu Koreeda isn’t a director afraid to step out of his comfort zone, experimenting with fantasy (“Air Doll”) and courtroom drama (“The Third Murder”). It’s no surprise then that his sole jidaigeki (period drama) to date, 2006’s “Hana”, tells the story of a samurai well out of his comfort zone in his role. The English language release came with the tagline “The tale of a reluctant samurai”, but the hero, Soza (Junichi Okada) is more than just reluctant and is actively running away from the role typically associated with such honourable duties.
In 18th century Japan, Soza hides out in a small community on the outskirts of Edo to seek out the murderer of his father, head of his clan, killed over a petty squabble. His duty is to get revenge. But despite the constant...

Karen O has shared a tender new song titled “Anti-Lullaby,” which doubles as the theme for the new Amazon series Hanna.
Despite its title, “Anti-Lullaby” is a lullaby of sorts, with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer cooing alongside a gently plucked acoustic guitar.
“Do not sleep, my starling / Sleep, my doe / She is wrapped in curtains laid in snow / She will bury you inside her fur,” Karen O sings on the 80-second track. “Do not sleep / She waits for you to sleep / My breath you breathe / It will carry you.

The modern laws of creative bankruptcy and burdens of Peak TV insatiability essentially demand that every movie is turned into a TV series these days. If it’s a movie property that’s idling, but doesn’t feel like it’s big-screen appropriate, chances are someone is turning that into a TV series. Case in point, “Hanna,” the new Amazon Prime series about a teenage assassin.

“Hanna” is a film that many cinephiles probably have already forgotten about. Starring the Oscar-nominated Saoirse Ronan as the titular character, the film features a teen assassin on the run from the government. The film was only a modest hit, but that was enough for Amazon to take the premise and adapt it for TV.
In the new teaser for the TV adaptation of “Hanna,” we don’t get anything really in the way of plot.

It’s been almost eight years since the Joe Wright movie “Hanna,” which saw Saoirse Ronan transformed into a ruthless on-screen teenage killer. Now, Amazon will put a fresh spin on the story with a new TV series based on the beloved action film. Amazon released the first teaser for the series on Friday, showing the origin of this story: a baby goes missing from a hospital, presumably jumpstarting the title character’s training towards her young murderous ways.
Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, who both appeared on AMC’s Danish import “The Killing,” will step into the roles played by Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, respectively, in the original film. Enos is Marissa Wiegler, a powerful but enigmatic intelligence agent determined to track down Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) after she goes off the grid. Hanna’s father Erik Heller (Kinnaman) is also trying to locate Hanna before the government can reuse her for nefarious purposes.

Who
Joanna Kulig
Age: 36
Hometown: Krynica-Zdrój, Lesser Poland, Poland
What
In Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, Kulig is Zula, a woman in post-war Poland who joins a folk music touring group. She begins a romance with conductor Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) and the two form a passionate but volatile couple. The story spans time and countries as the pair begins to realize that although they should never be together, they can never be apart.
“I think Zula is like me, very emotional,” Kulig says. Pawlikowski has said the inspiration for the two leads was his own parents’ turbulent past.
Why
Kulig is one of the rare foreign language performers being buzzed about for a potential Best Actress Oscar nomination. Her layered turn as Zula was crafted over an essentially chronological shoot which she says invested her with the ability to “find this line of how Zula is at the beginning and at the end.

Production designer Sarah Greenwood didn’t expect to find herself on the fringes of the Arctic Circle while shooting 2011’s “Hanna,” the story of a teenage girl raised in the wilderness to be an assassin. “We weren’t originally planning to go to Finland,” she says, recalling the pre-production for a film meant to shoot in Germany.
Greenwood, director Joe Wright and cinematographer Alwin Küchler had been scouting locations in Bavaria, lured by a generous tax rebate and assurances that the region would be suitable for the movie’s winter scenes. But they arrived to melting snow and driving rain. A frozen lake they’d planned to shoot on couldn’t support the crew’s weight. “You just knew it was going belly up,” she says.
Küchler, who had recently worked in Finland, suggested they try their luck with Finnish Lapland instead: a vast, wintery wilderness with more than 200 days of annual snow cover.

Ron Moore’s upcoming Apple series is filling out its main cast.
Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, and Sarah Jones have all been cast in the series, which takes place in a world where global space race never ended. Kinnaman will play Edward Baldwin, one of the top Nasa astronauts. Dorman and Jones have been cast as Gordo and Tracy Stevens, a prominent Nasa couple.
The role keeps Kinnaman in the TV sci-fi space, with the actor recently starring in the first season of the Netflix series “Altered Carbon.” He is also attached to the Amazon series adaptation of the film “Hanna” in a lead role. He is also known for his roles on the shows “House of Cards” and “The Killing.” On the film side, he starred in “Suicide Squad,” “Child 44,” and the “RoboCop” reboot. He is repped by Wme and Magnolia Entertainment.

Exclusive: Former The Killing and Altered Carbon star Joel Kinnaman, Patriot star Michael Dorman and Damnation co-star Sarah Jones have been tapped as the leads in Apple’s upcoming space drama series from Battlestar Galactica‘s and Outlander‘s Ronald D. Moore.
Dorman has played the lead on the Amazon Studios’ quirky genre-bending spy drama series Patriot whose second season was ordered 16 months ago but is yet to air. Because of the delay, Dorman was able to book a new series. I hear Amazon will likely not make a formal renewal decision on Patriot until Season 2 is released and should they opt to do another season, they will have to work around Dorman’s schedule on the Apple series.
Kinnamon, who played the lead, Takeshi Kovacs, on the first season of Netflix’s Altered Carbon, was recently tapped to star on the upcoming Amazon drama series Hanna in what is currently a one-year deal.

Director Joe Wright, who is hot off the success of his incredible film Darkest Hour, has found another film project to take on. The film is called The Woman in the Window, which is based on the novel by A.J. Finn. The story has a very Hitchcockian kind of vibe to it, and it sounds like the perfect project for Wright to take on. Here's the story description:
It isn’t paranoia if it’s really happening . . .
Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.
Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins...

Daniel Day-Lewis is unsurprisingly great in “Phantom Thread,” the thrice-awarded thespian’s supposed swan song, but the movie doesn’t belong to him. That honor goes to the remarkable Vicky Krieps, who’s far from a newcomer but essentially unknown on this side of the Atlantic — outside of “A Most Wanted Man” and “Hanna,” most of the Luxembourgian thespian’s work has been in Germany. One suspects that’s about to change.
Day-Lewis plays a mid-century fashion designer in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest, which reunites him with his “There Will Be Blood” star a decade later. Brilliant and neurotic, the esteemed Reynolds Woodcock can’t stand deviations from his routine and, according to his old so-and-so of a sister (Lesley Manville), is disoriented for the rest of the day whenever breakfast doesn’t go exactly as planned — which makes it a minor disaster when Alma (Krieps), whom he meets in a seaside inn,...

A version of this story first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine. More than a decade ago, a mutual friend introduced Gary Oldman to a young, aspiring director named Joe Wright, and added this note: “He’s going to be a great director someday.” Wright went on to make “Pride & Prejudice,” “Atonement,” “Hanna” and “Anna Karenina,” among other films — and Oldman remembered the long-ago introduction when the director came to him to star as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour,” a historical drama that focuses on Churchill as he assumes the office of Prime Minister in the perilous.

Earlier this year Daniel Day-Lewis announced that he is retiring from acting. He made one final film with director Paul Thomas Anderson, who previously directed Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood. There hasn't been a lot of information on this new film collaboration but today we have learned that the title of the film is Phantom Thread and we also have a brief plot synopsis:
Continuing their creative collaboration following 2007’s There Will Be Blood, three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Phantom Thread from Paul Thomas Anderson. The writer/director will once again explore a distinctive milieu of the 20th century. The new movie is a drama set in the couture world of 1950s London. Lady Bird is one of the year’s great joys. Greta Gerwig’s debut as a solo writer-director is so wise, so funny, and so remarkably assured that it seems to have flown in out of nowhere. Where did this nearly perfect coming-of-age comedy and emotionally affecting study of youth, social status, and financial malaise come from? The answer has been hiding in plain sight. As an actress, Gerwig has shown inimitable intelligence in films such as Frances Ha and 20th Century Women. She has now moved behind the camera for a 2002-set study of a Sacramento teen’s final year of high school, starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, and Timothée Chalamet, with music by Jon Brion.
Even after mentioning the involvement of such an ensemble of talent, I’m not sure anyone could have anticipated just how strong a film Lady Bird would be, or...

The film is called Stoner and it will be directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna, The Soloist). The movie is based on a novel by the same name written by Jon Williams.
The story will follow the life of William Stoner, “a dirt-poor farmer turned academic, who emerges as an unlikely existential hero while making his way through the first half of the 20th Century.”

A24 Films have released the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, Lady Bird. The film, which Gerwig also wrote, stars Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) who plays a girl on the threshold of adult life who yearns to escape her roots and attend an East Coast university. There's no question the film feels semi-autobiographical, with Ronan channeling the same kind of prickly, self-centered characters Gerwig is known for. I've always been somewhat bemused to discover that Gerwig is something of a divisive player in the mumblecore scene when I've found her nothing but charming and, well, hilarious. The film co-stars Laurie Metcalf, who plays Ronan's equally strong-willed mother. A24 will release Lady Bird in theaters November 10, 2017....

Winter is indeed upon us, as “Game of Thrones” has just wrapped its truncated seventh season with a jaw-dropping finale that moves plenty of pieces (most of them terrifying, ice-cold, and dragon-aided) into place for a game-changer of a final season…that won’t come until sometime in 2018.
