The photographs used in the film were not staged. Jonás Cuarón spent a year taking pictures of his everyday life and his friends and family. After a year he looked at all the photographs and wrote the fictional story based on these images.
An early cut of the film featured photographs of director Jonás Cuarón's own infected toenail doubling as that of Diego, but they were removed from the final cut because they were deemed too gruesome.
While photographing his friends and family over the course of a year, Jonás Cuarón was aware that he wanted to make a film with the pictures, but he did not know who the main characters would be and experimented with many other possible plots and characters that didn't make it into the film.
