2016 was a great year for Zackary Adler. The New York born director has become a sort of a cult figure amongst fans of gritty British gangster movies; a genre which despite racking up hit after hit has until now remained on the fringes of the British film industry.
After the record-breaking success of his recently released films Rise of Krays (2015) and The Fall of The Krays (2016), Adler has also just finished directing the third instalment and prequel to Rise of the Footsoldier , a franchise based on real life events surrounding the Rettendon Triple Murders, better known as The “Range Rover murders”. The film will be released by Signature Entertainment later this year. And if that wasn’t enough, Adler is also about to start shooting the third instalment of his Krays franchise, titled The Krays And The Mafia.

The Chicago-based musical drama Empire, about a former drug dealer who used his criminal fortune to become a music mogul, gets off to a not-terrible start. But not-terrible isn’t enough to ignite enthusiasm — especially when you’re watching great actors in great clothes perform or supervise original Timbaland music, and wondering why the damned thing isn’t more exciting. In Empire, which premieres tonight on Fox at 9 p.m., Terrence Howard plays Lucious Lyon, a 2.0 version of the pimp turned rapper he incarnated in the Oscar-nominated Hustle & Flow. The character is nearing the end of a lifelong transformation from criminality to legitimacy: Think American Gangster’s Frank Lucas evolving into Motown’s Berry Gordy, but with Corleone pretensions that are signaled by shots of the star brooding in artfully under-lit rooms. Our tale begins after Lucious is diagnosed with a fatal illness and decides to hand over his recording empire (named Empire,...

★★★★★ American filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer's Berlinale hit The Act of Killing (2012) - in cinemas this week from Dogwoof - challenges the very limitations of what a documentary can be. A disturbingly comfortable voyage into the mindset of evil and the psychology of a murderer(s), Oppenheimer's film is like nothing you'll have ever seen before. Focusing on Anwar Congo, a former black market gangster and Indonesian death squad general, Oppenheimer gives this former executioner the stage - allowing him to re-enact the real-life murders he and his cohorts committed in whatever style he so chooses.
Harking back to the Indonesian military coup of 1965, Congo was one of many small-time thugs promoted to these death squads, encouraged to help the army kill over a million reported communists. Despite the graphic crimes of his past, Congo remains unaffected, instead visibly proud of his murderous achievements. At first, the decision to permit Congo...

John Hillcoat likes to refer to Nick Cave – a key collaborator on all of his movies including his latest, the stylish gangster epic Lawless – as his right hand man or ‘the master”. It’s easy to see why. Cave, the musician and author, is Hillcoat’s creative soul mate. Lawless is the third movie Cave has written for Hillcoat and he’s also compiled a brilliant, haunting soundtrack for the film featuring bluegrass artists performing contemporary rock classics, like Velvet Undergound’s White Light/ White Heat.
And sharp-eyed fans of Cave might well spot him making a cameo appearance in Lawless too. “Yes, I am actually in Lawless,” Cave smiles. “There’s a scene in Chicago at the very start with a dead gangster in a car – well, I’m the dead gangster.”
So Cave is clearly in tune with Hillcoat and was involved with Lawless from the very start of the project.

"Sons of Anarchy" will likely continue on FX for another couple of seasons after this one, but creator Kurt Sutter says he's thinking more seriously about where the show will end than he has in previous seasons.
"I've said this before, but this is really the first season I've had to have a very clear sense of the endgame, because I realize this season I have to write to that endgame," Sutter said Saturday (July 28) at the Television Critics Association press tour. "I think the stakes get higher with each season, the circumstances get more dire, the wreckage gets deeper. ...
"I don't know quite how all that will fall apart, but I know eventually it will."

Usually when I talk about music around these parts, it's with an eye on the movies. But even though most of my inspirations come from movies -- with the music as a vital, but supporting player -- today I thought I would try to do things a little differently. Which is why today is all about music that was inspired by the movies.
Pop music is littered with movie references, and sometimes the references are a little more obscure, as is the case with the genesis of Bob Seger's classic Night Moves. Legend has it that the idea for the song was born as Seger walked out of the theater for George Lucas' American Graffiti and he realized that he had his own stories of a misspent youth to share. But other inspirations can be a little more obvious, like with Jay Z's tribute to Frank Lucas and...

As if the recent November titles weren’t enough, we now have some other films to add to our upcoming Criterion Collection wishlists.
The Criterion Collection will once again be curating the upcoming All Tomorrow’s Parties Film Screenings, in Monticello New York, this September. The event overall, will be curated by Criterion alum, Jim Jarmusch (Down by Law, Night on Earth, Stranger Than Paradise, Mystery Train). Earlier today, Atp & Criterion announced their line-up of films, and hidden among the list of epic titles that we already knew were going to be released, or are already available, were a few little verifications of rumors going around.
The line-up looks to be pretty amazing, and if I could afford the flight, I would surely head out for that weekend. Several of the new Bbs box set will be screening, as well as some other films that we’ve discussed on the...

Often cast as villains, he appeared in Goldfinger and The King and I
The actor Martin Benson, who has died aged 91, occupied a screen category filled in its time by Herbert Lom, with whom he acted on several occasions, and previously Conrad Veidt – that of the worldly, sophisticated, foreign villain. With jet-black hair, dark colouring and pronounced eyebrows on a thin face, he never seemed properly dressed without a tuxedo. As well as remaining furiously busy during six decades as an actor, he pursued several artistic disciplines.
Born into a Jewish family in London, he seemed briefly destined to become a pharmacist. As a gunner in the army during the seond world war, he organised entertainment for the troops, and produced a tour of Gaslight in aid of a fund to replace Hms Dorsetshire. By 1944, he had been promoted to captain and was posted to Alexandria, Egypt, where he built a theatre from scratch,...

Sometimes it's just easy for producers Sean C. and Lv, a.k.a. Grind Music Inc. — play the beat, let the artist rap over it, done. Classic.
"We had that Michael Jackson sample. L went up there to Yonkers and played them the beat," Sean C. said of Jadakiss' new street jam, "One More Step." "It's pretty simple, straightforward."
"Soon as he heard it," Lv added. "I played, like, 20 seconds and he was like, 'I already know what that is. Don't even worry about that.' "
"It was a blessing they got it on some 'We Gon Make It'-type vibe," C., a former A&R rep at Loud Records, added.
Sean C. and Lv have incredible credentials and have worked with the best of the best.
