Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning platform for preschool-age kids, is shutting down after almost 10 years, Variety has confirmed.
Noggin is a casualty of Paramount Global’s companywide layoffs this week, which resulted in about 800 staffers being let go. The entire team that ran Noggin was laid off, as first reported by trade publication Kidscreen.
Noggin will wind down sometime in 2024, with the exact date still to be determined. Noggin will no longer be taking new subscribers and there will be a transition period for current subscribers, sources confirmed.
Paramount+ already includes video content that has been on Noggin under Nick Jr., which is the company’s flagship preschool brand, and the company is focusing on reinforcing Paramount+ as a service with programming catering the whole household.
Designed for kids aged 2 to 7, the Noggin subscription service was launched in 2015. Most recently, it cost $7.99/month or $71/year. From 1999-2009, Noggin operated as...

John Waters may not have directed a film in nearly two decades, but he has been far from slowing down. With a handful of books, several TV appearances and his annual one-man show, Waters is about as busy as he’s ever been. Thankfully, one of those books, “Liarmouth”, will be his next feature. And after that? Anything but retirement.
In a new profile straight out of John Waters’ hometown of Baltimore, the writer/director said, “I jump up every day to go to work…People say why aren’t you going to retire? Because I wish I believed in another life after, but I don’t. So I want to see every person, every movie, read every book, go everywhere in the world…That’s why I think travel is so important. In the pouring rain, upwards of 100 people marched outside of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Park Avenue South building Tuesday afternoon in New York as part of a themed Writers Guild picket that doubled as a promise to unionize east coast animation writers.
“This has been a long, horrible battle trying to get animation writing covered. We are not giving up. I’m really just here to say that when the strike is over, when we have won the contract we deserve, we are circling back to animation,” Susan Kim, WGA East animation caucus co-chair and a writer/story editor behind hits like Arthur, Bubble Guppies, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Clifford the Big Red Dog, told a drenched crowd of picketers. “We are going to be back. That’s the case currently, as for a very limited time Prime Video members can sign up for a subscription to the kids’ streaming service Noggin for just $1.99 per month for two months. Paramount Plus is taking a page from ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV streaming service with the launch of 18 linear channels that let subscribers surf through always-on themed collections of shows — just like old-fashioned television.
On Thursday, Paramount Plus launched Live Channels, a new feature that curates popular shows and movies on the service in linear channels, pulled from ViacomCBS properties including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and the Smithsonian Channel as well as from other sources.
The themed “live” channels, streaming 24 hours per day, feature the service’s most-streamed genres, such as Kids & Family Fun, Crime & Justice and Reality TV: Competitions, as well as fan-favorite franchises such as “Star Trek,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Paw Patrol.”
Paramount Plus is adopting the linear TV-style model pioneered by Pluto TV, which Viacom acquired in early 2019. Tom Ryan, founder of Pluto TV, was elevated to president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming a year ago.

This was inevitable. Nickelodeon is developing an animated series for preschoolers based on “Baby Shark,” the ultra-viral kids video that has nearly 2.87 billion YouTube views. Pinkfong, the company behind the audience-participation clip, is partnering with Nick on the project.
There aren’t many details about the project, which has no episode count or premiere date yet. Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products will manage consumer products licensing for the property worldwide, excluding Asia.
“Baby Shark has captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the top 10 most-viewed videos on YouTube ever,” said Ramsey Naito, Evp Nickelodeon Animation. “At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character, and we have a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon.”

Viacom’s Nickelodeon plans to stir new technology into its Noggin subscription service with the acquisition of Sparkler — a move that promises to give parents tools to guide the learning of their preschool-age kids.
Nick on Friday announced the deal to acquire New York-based Sparkler, an early-childhood learning technology platform. The cabler also appointed Sparkler co-founder and CEO Kristen Kane (pictured above) as the new head of for the Noggin direct-to-consumer service.
A Nick rep declined to reveal how much the company paid for Sparkler or how many employees it has. Sparkler, founded in 2015, had received funding from angel investors and selected grants, including from the NewSchools Venture Fund, a nonprofit educational organization.
Nickelodeon said that over the next year, Sparkler’s technology — designed to measure child development and coach parents on improving their kids’ learning — will be integrated into Noggin’s platform. That will provide tools for parents to...

Imagine a music-filled kids’ cartoon about saving the ocean, with characters voiced and sung by Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, and Grammy winner Pharrell Williams. Nearly ten years ago, it almost happened.
Hoppus recently guested on Kroq’s “Kevin and Bean Show,” where he and “Kevin & Bean” co-host Jensen Karp revealed that together they once pitched an animated series, titled “Bronze Blue,” to networks like Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Much to their disappointment, the show never happened.
“Bronze Blue” would have starred Hoppus, Wentz, Ashlee Simpson, and others as various characters in an underwater punk/pop band singing catchy, eco-friendly tunes. The band toured the beaches of the world to share their message; however, they would have to stay one step ahead of their ultimate villain: The Sushi Chef.

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is already a champion on the basketball court, and now the athlete is ready to dribble over to the entertainment business.
In a cover story interview, Curry told Variety he’s keeping his acting options open, biding his time until a slam dunk of a project comes along. The Mvp also discussed his favorite shows and movies, as well as the possibility of a music career.
What’s your favorite TV show?
My favorite TV shows are pretty much whatever a six- and three-year old watch nowadays. “Bubble Guppies” and “LoliRock’s” and anything with Barbie stuff in it now. Literally I’ve been thinking about what TV shows I like, and that’s the only thing that will come to my head because you go to our DVR and that’s all that’s on there. I grew up on, like, “Even Stevens.

Bucking conventional practices when it comes to streaming services and their (typically secret) ratings, Amazon has released data on their most-watched series of 2017.
Globally, “The Grand Tour” Season 1 was the top series of the year, with “Sneaky Pete” Season 1 coming in second, “The Man in High Castle” landing in third for Season 1 and fourth for Season 2, while “The Tick” snuck in at the No. 5 slot. Those rankings were the same for U.S. viewership, except No. 1 and No. 2 switched, as “Sneaky Pete” took the top slot in the States.
Notably, two of these seasons — “Sneaky Pete” and “The Tick” — were new to Amazon in 2017. “The Grand Tour” debuted in November 2016, and its second season has only been available since Dec. 8.

Box OfficeThe real Lost Village for these iconic characters is Fanville.
My two-and-a-half-year-old daughter was watching TV yesterday when a Smurfs: The Lost Village commercial came on. “Trolls!” she shouted, mistaking the new movie about little blue creatures for the recent movie about little pink and orange and blue creatures. One bunch wears white hats, the other has crazy hair, but it’s easy to see how they could be confused, especially by a toddler. And she didn’t even see any footage of Gargamel, whose Smurf-consuming desires are akin to the Bergens and their taste for Trolls.
Did Trolls trump Smurfs, causing the latter to open much lower than initial expectations? The Lost Village had originally been projected for a $20m opening, if not slightly more. Then The Boss Baby became a hit last weekend, and predictions fell to $15m-$18m, the higher end of that range being what the live-action/CG hybrid The Smurfs 2 debuted...

Parenting a toddler is quite a demanding task. But imagine how much harder it would be if you couldn't leave home with your child by yourself. Or chase after him. Or even pick him up. That's what motherhood looks like for Tiffanie Didonato. Born with diastrophic dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism, she underwent limb-lengthening surgery as a child, bringing her from 3'8" to 4'10" and allowing her to live an independent life. There are still twelve months to go before the world gets to see the newest adventures of Charlie Brown in the Peanuts movie, but as is the case with marketing in today’s cinematic climate, audiences are growing to expect teaser materials at least a year in advance.
