Turner Classic Movies' 2017 Gay Pride film series comes to a close this evening and tomorrow morning, Thursday–Friday, June 29–30, with the presentation of seven movies, hosted by TV interviewer Dave Karger and author William J. Mann, whose books include Wisecracker: The Life and Times of William Haines and Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969. Among tonight's movies' Lgbt connections: Edward Albee, Tony Richardson, Evelyn Waugh, Tab Hunter, John Gielgud, Roddy McDowall, Linda Hunt, Harvey Fierstein, Rudolf Nureyev, Christopher Isherwood, Joel Grey, and Tommy Kirk. Update: Coincidentally, TCM's final 2017 Gay Pride celebration turned out to be held the evening before a couple of international events – and one non-event – demonstrated that despite noticeable progress in the last three decades, gay rights, even in the so-called “West,” still have a long way to go. In Texas, the state's – all-Republican – Supreme Court decided that married gays should be treated as separate and unequal. In...

★★★★☆Some films could only have been made in England, during a certain era and with a particular cast. The Belles of St. Trinian's (1954) - newly released by StudioCanal to mark its sixtieth anniversary - is one such film. Though its popularity led to a string of sequels throughout the 1950s and 60s - as well as an unfortunate revival in 2007 - it is the original film, directed by Frank Launder and starring Alistair Sim, George Cole and Joyce Grenfell, which remains the archetypal celluloid visualisation of artist Ronald Searle's comic creation. It's the new term at St. Trinian's - the girl's public school in the heart of England's home-counties, where anyone, other than the pupils themselves, fears to go.

Do celebrities get fashion dibs because they're from the same country as the designer? Case in point Paloma Faith vs. Sandra Bullock in this Burberry Prorsum getup. Does the UK native automatically win because she's from Burberry's home turf? Frankly, we're just looking for help awarding a winner in this close call. Both the Academy Award nominee and the St. Trinian's star wear the Paris-inspired T-shirt and vintage skirt beautifully. It comes down to a choice between some added drama versus a clean, simple approach. There's something we love about Paloma's over-the-top take on this combo. She looks like a society gal shopping at Harrods circa 1945. The maroon color complements the...

★★☆☆☆ The second feature from Craig Viveiros, The Liability (2012) straddles a number of interesting sub-genres (road trip, gangster yarn, the world-weary hitman). It's a shame these outwardly intriguing elements have to do battle with a predictable and pretty contrived story. Even an impressive visual canvas eventually plumps for style over substance as the script begins to drag and the pace slackens. A teen tearaway (Jack O'Connell) trashes her criminal stepfather's prized automobile. As a means of paying off his debt, he's given the job of driving a professional killer (Tim Roth) to a grizzly job up in the North East.
As their long journey unwinds, an unlikely bond develops between the pair, with the young upstart taking an interest in his passenger's macabre occupation. Before it all turns into a mutually cheery apprenticeship, a young Eastern European traveller (Talulah Riley) interrupts their disposal of a victim. Escaping from the duo, her...

As an actor, Colin Firth has proved remarkably resilient over his thirty-year career. After breaking through in 1984's "Another Country," a series of strong performances followed that never quite saw him become a huge star. But suddenly, 1995's TV version of "Pride & Prejudice" made him a heartthrob, and led to roles in Oscar-winners "The English Patient" and "Shakespeare In Love." Just as the roles started to dry up again, he played another seminal romantic lead in "Bridget Jones' Diary." And then, as his career seemed to creep into self-parody with the likes of "Mamma Mia" and "St. Trinian's," he got back-to-back Oscar nominations for "A Single Man" and "The King's Speech," winning for the latter. And it looks like another reinvention for Mr. Firth might be on the way. Aside from "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," his immediate post-Oscar roles, in "Gambit" and "Arthur Newman," have been disappointing, but he's...

St. Trinian's Creator Searle Dies
The man behind the original St. Trinian's cartoons has died aged 91.
British cartoonist Ronald Searle passed away in his sleep in a French hospital on 30 December.
He is most famous for creating the naughty schoolgirls, who appeared in their first comic strip in 1941.
Searle's chaotic all-girls school idea was adapted for the big screen, with the first St. Trinian's movie released in 1954.
A further four films were released before the series was rebooted in 2007, starring Colin Firth, Gemma Arterton, and Rupert Everett in drag as the headmistress. A sequel was released in 2009.

The leaves are falling, school is starting, and Oscar season is on its way. You might think it's time to leave summer blockbusters behind, but this fall has something for everyone, from arty indies to 3-D extravaganzas.
Some of these folks, like Julianne Hough and Lea Michele, are familiar faces from the boob tube who are making the leap to movies; and others, like Noomi Rapace, are better known overseas. What they all have in common is that their breakthrough moments are upon us, as sure as school supplies.
Henry Hopper
Starring in: "Restless" (September 16)

Some of these folks, like Julianne Hough and Lea Michele, are familiar faces from the boob tube who are making the leap to movies; and others, like Noomi Rapace, are better known overseas. What they all have in common is that their breakthrough moments are upon us, as sure as school supplies.

The astute patron of horror cinema may take a quick glance at the pitch-black Burke and Hare and feel a strong air of familiarity, one that says "Hey, do I really need to see another version of the fact-based tale that was already covered in The Flesh and The Fiends (1960), The Doctor and the Devils (1985), and I Sell the Dead (2008)?" And in many cases the answer would be "nah," but there are actually some rather interesting components at work here. The director is John Landis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London), and it's been a very long time since we've seen a feature from that guy; the writers are the team behind the popular St. Trinian's series; and the cast is... well,...

Coming out of SXSW, the film I heard the most glowing reviews for was Joe Cornish's Attack the Block. The film, which has been described by more than a few folks as wildly inventive, is about a young street gang who band together to defend their neighborhood against an alien invasion. Nick Frost(Shaun of the Dead), Jodie Whittaker(St. Trinian's), and Luke Treadway(Clash of the Titans) are the...

One project that everyone on the planet should be excited about is Christopher Nolan's final upcoming Batman sequel 'The Dark Knight Rises'. Yesterday we bought you news that 'Inception' star Joseph Gordon-Levitt was set to for the role of mobster son Alberto Falcone. And overlooked amongst this big breaking news, according to AICN, was the announcement that sexy Brit actress Juno Temple - below ('Year One', 'St. Trinian's, 'Kaboom') was in talks to play a 'street-smart Gotham girl'. The rumours going around are indicating that this could potentially be a female Robin-esque role. But we don't want to speculate too much at this stage. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman return alongside newcomers Gordon-Levitt with Tom Hardy as Bale and Anne Hathaway as what's expected to be the sexiest Catwoman yet!...

My Idiot Brother
Opens: 2011
Cast: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan
Director: Jesse Peretz
Summary: Ned is a well-meaning idealist just released from prison for dealing cannabis. In succession, he disrupts the lives and homes of his three sisters: a career-driven journalist about to get her big break; a bisexual hipster whose lies are disrupting her relationship; and a married mother who hasn't noticed that her marriage is falling apart.
Analysis: Scoring a good response over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, this broad light comedy with a sweet heart charmed the pants off The Weinstein Company to the tune of around $6 million for distribution rights. That covers most of its sub-$10 million budget, a number that it could potentially outgross by several factors if the good-natured tone hinted at in the reviews were correct. If anything, the few negatives tended to be because this...

Garfield & Stone Up For BAFTA Rising Star Award
Andrew Garfield is set to battle it out with his Spider-man co-star Emma Stone for the prestigious Rising Star prize at the upcoming British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.
The two actors, who are filming the next installment in the superhero franchise together, have both made the shortlist for the coveted trophy - the only BAFTA voted for by the public - which recognises young talent.
Garfield and Stone are nominated alongside British actors Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson and Gemma Arterton - and the St. Trinian's actress is delighted with the honour.
Arterton says, "I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to be one of the shortlisted actors... 2010 was an incredible year for me and to be recognised in this way by both my peers and the film-going public is amazing. I'm in very good company with the other actors who have been nominated, so it is a huge compliment to be considered to win this prestigious award."
The prize will be handed out at the BAFTAs ceremony in London on 13 February.
Previous recipients of the Orange Rising Star honour include The Last King of Scotland actor James McAvoy, Bond girl Eva Green, and Transformers star Shia Labeouf. Last year's winner was Twilight actress Kristen Stewart.

Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, Teresa Palmer
Director: D.J. Caruso
Summary: Nine infant aliens flee their home planet to hide out on Earth. The species that destroyed their planet however has followed them and sets out to hunt them down. As the infants grow into teenagers with special powers, three of them are killed. A fourth has fallen in love and now has something to stand up and fight for.
Analysis: In premise and look, this sounds like a big budget and more action-oriented reboot of late sci-fi teen drama "Roswell". Though based on a young adult novel series, it was another title in this category that was the impetus for this adaptation - Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series. Besides pronouncing her name for us, Gemma Arterton—whose first name is voiced with a soft "G" and whose last name is Arterton, not Atherton—is having to explain herself to America. The British actor is here promoting "Tamara Drewe," in which she plays the title character, an ugly duckling–turned-swan who returns to her hometown after quite the nose job. Arterton is not only discussing her craft with the American press; she's being asked about her pert, real-life nose. But Tamara's comedic flashback scenes, before surgery, are the ones that best reflect Arterton's deep talents. Those who know the actor only as a Bond girl ("Quantum of Solace") or as Princess Tamina ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time") might be stunned to realize that inside Arterton beats the heart of a character actor. The fragile naiveté of Tess in television's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," the raunchy grit of...

Another actress has come under fire. Last week, Gemma Arterton ('Alice Creed,' 'St. Trinian's,' 'Clash of the Titans,' 'Prince of Persia') made waves for speaking out against the objectification she's faced as an actress to the UK edition of GQ. (Though she appeared as the magazine's cover girl last spring, her comments are linked to an interview in the October 2010 issue.) Arterton criticized the film world for how it values and uses actresses, stating that she's been treated like an "object", and now tries to only work with those who respect her. Her quotes include:
"I'm looking at working with people I get on with, that respect me, that don't just see me as a piece of ass. Which I have experienced as well."
"I've nearly walked off very big films before, and I would, because I don't want that in my life.

Upon hearing that a new alien invasion film is in development, Bob Hoskins may not be the first name that springs to mind. Nevertheless Moviehole have announced that this is indeed the case and Hoskins will be starring alongside Talulah Riley (The Boat That Rocked, St. Trinian's) and Jason Flemyng (Stardust, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ) in British sci-fi flick Transmission.
Not much has been revealed so far but we know it is being developed by Gold films and that Willem Dafoe is also in talks to star but has not been confirmed yet. Centered around an alien invasion during a solar eclipse, Moviehole have described it as "Pitch Black meets 28 Days Later".
Unsurprisingly for an effects-heavy film these days, it will be shot in 3D with Roger Christian attatched to direct. Perhaps best known for his Oscar-winning art direction on Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope...
