What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see this one – written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.

It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

The Grierson Trust has announced the shortlist for the 2024 British Documentary Awards, with the BBC coming top at 28 entries.

Because memes never truly die, the disastrous Willy Wonka exhibit that spawned such viral images as the sad Oompa Loompa and ‘The Unknown’ now has a fully produced musical parody on the way titled Willy’s Candy Spectacular. Because that alone isn’t absurd enough, original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory actors Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen have officially joined the cast.

Cole and Themmen, who respectively portrayed Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee in the 1971 classic, will serve as narrators in live stage readings of Willy’s Candy Spectacular, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The readings are set to go down at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with Cole leading the production from August 9th to August 18th and Themmen taking over from August 19th to August 26th.

After more than 50 years, two actors are diving back into the world of Willy Wonka (sort of). Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen, two of the child stars of 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, will participate in a live stage reading of Willy’s Candy Spectacular, an upcoming musical parody inspired by a disastrous Wonka event that made international headlines earlier this year.

Cole played the insatiable Veruca Salt in the classic movie starring Gene Wilder as chocolatier Willy Wonka, while Themmen played the cowboy hat wearing Mike Teavee. Both will participate in a live reading at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, serving as narrators. Cole will lead the cast from Aug. 9 to 18, with Themmen stepping in from Aug. 19-26.

Willy’s Candy Spectacular was inspired by a real-life Wonka event in Scotland, which organizers advertised as “immersive experience” that would transport Willy Wonka fans to a “magical realm.

The Crown’s swansong season has dominated the BAFTA TV nominations, picking up eight in a record year for Netflix.

Although it missed out in the coveted Drama Series category, four of the Netflix royal smash’s actors were handed nods today including Dominic West, who played Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki, who was Princess Diana. Salim Daw and Lesley Manville are the other two nominated actors and actresses, while The Crown also received nominations in the likes of costume design, make up and sound.

Netflix achieved a record haul and was second only to the BBC with nominations, comfortably eclipsing stalwarts ITV and Channel 4 as Top Boy and Black Mirror were also rewarded.

Musician-turned-comedian Hagen (writer-director) stars alongside Dylan Baker, Frederick Weller, Eric Bogosian & Emmy Winner Jamie Lee (HBO’s Crashing). Concert violinist and author Ling Ling Huang (Natural Beauty) also stars with newcomer John Kroner and Charlotte Ray Rosenberg. Hagen is known for her late-night appearances on Jimmy Fallon, and as a New Face of Comedy in 2019 for the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal.

Multiple women allege that actor and comedian Russell Brand, 48, sexually assaulted them between 2006 and 2013, according to an investigation by Britain’s Channel 4 and newspapers The Times and The Sunday Times.

It was during this period that Brand’s international popularity exploded with his role in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and 2010’s “Get Him to the Greek.” The latter portion of these years is when he was married to singer Katy Perry, from 2010 until their 2012 divorce.

Brand attempted to get ahead of the publication of the story on Friday by releasing a video denying some of the allegations, but admitting to having what he described as a period of promiscuity in his past. He’s regularly talked about having a sex addiction. Brand said that his relationships have all been consensual.

The allegations also include that Brand exhibited “controlling, abusive and predatory behavior,” according to the Times. The women do not know each other.

Bruce Miller has stepped down from his post as showrunner of the “The Handmaid’s Tale,” passing his duties on the sixth and final season to Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang, who already served as writers and executive producers.

In the Academy’s Andrea Riseborough fracas, the loser is the actress herself. The respected 41-year-old British thespian earned an Oscar nomination for a lauded performance as a down-and-out alcoholic in scrappy indie “To Leslie” (Momentum Pictures), but her name will also be remembered for her association with the grassroots awards push that upended the traditional Oscar campaigning process.

Neal Francis’s 2021 full-length In Plain Sight was a revelatory blast of soul, R&b, and off-the-rails piano jams, including the six-minute exploration “Sentimental Garbage” — the working title of In Plain Sight. Francis returns to that phrase for his new EP, a seven-song collection of odds and ends that he describes as “bittersweet scraps.”

“Sentimental Garbage was the working title of our last LP,” Francis says, “which includes the track of the same name. We ended up calling that record In Plain Sight while removing the title track from the sequence.

David Graziano has been named the new showrunner of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” ahead of its record-setting 24th season, NBC confirmed to TheWrap on Wednesday.

Longtime showrunner Warren Leight announced he was leaving after Season 23 wrapped, citing a stressful year dealing with Covid-related production issues.

Exclusive: Natalie Chaidez has signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Television. As part of the deal, she will develop and create original programming via Wbtv for all platforms.

The news arrives ahead of HBO Max’s Season 2 premiere of The Flight Attendant on April 21, which marks Chaidez’s debut as series executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Steve Yockey.

Chaidez is a veteran creator, executive producer, and showrunner who works in both television and features. Prior to joining The Flight Attendant, she served as executive producer and writer on USA Network’s critically acclaimed crime drama Queen of the South.

She previously created and executive produced the Syfy drama series Hunters. Her additional TV writing and producing credits include 12 Monkeys, In Plain Sight, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Heroes, Judging Amy, and New York Undercover, among many others.

Natalie Chaidez has joined HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant” as co-showrunner for Season 2. She’ll team with series creator Steve Yockey in the role.

“The Flight Attendant” is described as a “dark comedic thriller” starring Kaley Cuoco as a flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, with a dead man — and no idea what happened. Season 1 was based on the novel of the same name by Chris Bohjalian, with Season 2 set to follow Cuoco’s character on a “new adventure,” per HBO Max.

Chaidez most recently served as executive producer and writer on USA Network crime drama “Queen of the South,” which earlier this month returned for its fifth and final season at the cable network.

Exclusive: The Flight Attendant, the Kaley Cuoco-fronted HBO Max drama, is getting a new co-pilot.

Natalie Chaidez, who was previously exec producer of USA Network’s Queen of the South, is boarding the series as co-showrunner alongside Steve Yockey for its second season.

She will exec produce alongside showrunner Yockey, Cuoco, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Meredith Lavender and Marcie Ulin, who were co-showrunners of season one, will depart.

The series, based on the book of the same name by author Chris Bohjalian, centers on alcoholic, globe-trotting flight attendant Cassie Bowen (Cuoco) who becomes embroiled in an espionage plot following her affair with a first class passenger, who winds up murdered after their night together.

Amazon Studios has ordered a YA pilot based on the Harlan Coben novel “Shelter,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Shelter” is the first novel in Coben’s Mickey Bolitar book series. MGM has acquired the rights to all the other books in the Mickey Bolitar series as well. According to an individual with knowledge of the project, should “Shelter” get ordered to series, it could go either to Amazon Prime Video or to IMDb TV. The pilot will begin filming this summer.

In “Shelter,” Bolitar witnesses his father’s death and sends his mom to rehab. He is forced to live with his estranged aunt and switch high schools. Fans may want to launch an “Interrogation” into why the CBS All Access series will not be returning.

The streamer has canceled the Peter Sarsgaard-led drama after only a single season, Variety has confirmed. News of the show’s demise comes around ten months after it first launched on All Access.

“Interrogation” was picked up back in late 2018 and hailed from co-creators by Anders Weidemann (“30 Degrees in February”) and John Mankiewicz (“House of Cards”). It was based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. Each episode was structured around an interrogation taken directly from the real police case files, and the episodes were made with the intention of allowing viewers to watch them in any order.

Stephen Amell is currently recuperating after injuring his back earlier this week while filming his Atlanta-based Starz wrestling drama Heels, TVLine has learned exclusively.

“While performing a stunt on the set of Heels this week, Stephen Amell sustained an injury to his back,” a rep for Starz confirms. “Following a medical evaluation, he is now resting and recovering at home in anticipation of his return to set. Production continues as Stephen recuperates.”

Starz today announced the beloved actress has been cast in the role of Willie in the series Heels.

McCormack’s character is the business partner of Jack Spade (played by Stephen Amell in the series) and logistical brains behind the local wrestling organization who came up in the glory days as Wild Bill’s (Chris Bauer) valet, but grew tired of babysitting and left him just as his career took off.

His return to the local circuit complicates her life, as does the reflection of her younger self that she sees in Crystal (Kelli Berglund).

McCormack is widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of The West Wing, as the lead of the critically acclaimed In Plain Sight and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts.

Starz’s upcoming wrestling drama series “Heels” has added “In Plain Sight” star Mary McCormack to its cast, TheWrap has confirmed.

McCormack will star opposite “Arrow” alum Stephen Amell and “Vikings” star Alexander Ludwig in the eight-episode series.

The show is described as an hourlong drama about “the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small town pro wrestling,” according to Starz. “Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.”

ABC is developing a drama series with both Eva Longoria and Forest Whitaker attached as executive producers.

Titled “Chicano,” the series is inspired by the novel of the same name Richard Vasquez. It tells the multi-generational story of the Sandovals, a Mexican-American family that immigrates to Los Angeles in pursuit of the American Dream. It follows the struggles and triumphs of the Sandovals from 1920 through present and explores the question of what it means to be American.

ABC has given the project a script plus additional development material order with a penalty attached. Natalie Chaidez will write and executive produce. Longoria and Ben Spector will executive produce via UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, while Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi will executive produce via Significant Productions. U.S. streaming service BritBox is to co-produce ITV crime drama The Pembrokeshire Murders starring Murder Mystery and The Alienist star Luke Evans.

The Svod service, which is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV, will take U.S. and Canadian rights to the three-part series, produced by Bodyguard producer World Productions.

Evans plays police officer Steve Wilkins in the drama, which depicts the pursuit of a cold-blooded serial killer and is based on true-crime book Catching the Bullseye Killer, written by Senior Investigating Officer Steve Wilkins and ITV news journalist Jonathan Hill.

Filming kicked off in January on the series, which was originally commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill and is written by In Plain Sight’s Nick Stevens. The series comes from ITV-owned Bodyguard and Line of Duty producer World Productions and is produced by Hinterland’s Ed Talfan for Wales-based Severn Screen.
