I believe it takes a well-developed sense of humor to be a horror fan. After all, none of us would be able to sleep if we actually thought that Freddy Krueger could show up in our dreams at night – and yet we always play along when the time comes to enjoy spooky stories about supernatural killers and mutated monsters.

That’s why the rise of horror comedies was all but inevitable, as most horror hounds were already willing to laugh alongside their favorite filmmakers instead of at them. That being said, some of these humorous scares are more popular than others, and today we’d like to shine a light on six criminally underseen horror-comedies that deserve a second chance at success!

Dark Sky Films will be giving Blackout, the latest genre film from writer/director Larry Fessenden, a one week theatrical release at the IFC Center in New York City beginning on March 13th, and that theatrical engagement will feature special cast appearances and a Q&a. Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.

Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.

The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

While horror movies continue to show life at the box office, some of the most innovative directors working with the genre on a smaller scale have found a more creative storytelling approach: audio. For three seasons, the radio dramas of “Tales From Beyond the Pale” have found a number of indie horror filmmakers channeling their talents into a series of gripping audio-based narratives, and you can listen to new installments of the fourth season every Friday exclusively on IndieWire, starting with two new episodes today, and concluding with a special presentation on Halloween.

Each of the 10 episodes in the latest season was recorded in front of a live audience, at special events in Los Angeles, Colorado and Montreal, between 2014 and 2015. The stories were told with a handful of actors, live music and sound design produced in real time.

For the past six years, genre moviemakers and moneymen have congregated for long weekends at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, taking part in the Frontières Co-Production Marketplace. Founded in 2012, the market was conceived as a place for horror/fantasy/action auteurs — both established names and newcomers — to pitch projects to potential backers and take part in various networking events.

A highlight of the Market is the opening-day pitch session, in which selected directors, writers, and producers offer multimedia presentations of their nascent features. At the very first Frontières, this event spawned Anouk Whissell, Francois Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s exuberant futuristic actioner “Turbo Kid”; subsequent movies that took their first steps to fruition there include Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie’s cult/monster horror film “The Void”; Caroline Labrèche and Steeve Léonard’s science-fiction thriller “Radius,” which premiered at this year’s Fantasia; and Jenn Wexler’s upcoming punk-slasher opus “The Ranger.

While the general moviegoing public never has to endure the hellacious experience of film marketplaces, most independent filmmakers and producers are all too familiar with the frustrating hustle of meetings with potential financiers and sales agents, all of which reduces their projects to simplistic taglines and demographics. Frontières, the international marketplace for genre films currently underway in Montreal, faces a different set of challenges. For example: Can you have too many zombie movies?

“We wound up with two this time,” said Lindsay Peters, the market and industry director who has organized the industry showcase for five years. “But that’s the nice thing — they can be completely different, and just compliment each other.”

Ethan Hawke must have taken a shine to the feeling of a leather hat on his head as he can now be seen again in the ol’ wild west as a rugged hero and damn fine shot in the first trailer for Ti West‘s In a Valley of Violence. When a drifter (Hawke) and his dog wander into a small town, a local gunslinger (a gleeful James Ransone) picks a fight he wasn’t ready to start in earnest, but soon becomes hellbent on finishing after he’s shown up and knocked out cold by the loner. The sheriff (John Travolta, sporting some facial hair) just wants peace and quiet, upset once the violence breaks out in spades as he knows the drifter has a military past. Despite last week’s terror attacks in Brussels, the show went on at Fantasia’s Frontières International Co-Production Market for genre films at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

For its third European edition, the market curated one of its strongest selections to date, including Baskin director Can Evrenol’s Housewife. This time, Evrenol will focus on a woman who struggles with a traumatic family history and slowly loses her grip on reality.

Another stand-out was Amanda Kramer’s Drain You, adapted from her own novel of the same name.

Frontières International Co-Production Market has unveiled the full line-up for its third European edition.

Taking place at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff) from March 30-April 1, Frontières will showcase 20 projects from the likes of Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK.

A total of 20 projects were selected from a record number of submissions new projects from Baskin’s Can Evrenol, Doc Of The Dead’s Alexandre Philippe, Go Down Death’s Aaron Schimberg and I Sell The Dead’s Glenn McQuaid.

Angus Scrimm, horror’s indelible Tall Man of the Phantasm franchise, died Saturday at 89. Phantasm director Don Coscarelli confirmed the news on his Twitter account, calling Scrimm “the last in a long line of classic horror movie stars” and “a terrific actor and even better friend.” In all, Scrimm appeared in four Phantasm movies (with a fifth installment as yet unreleased). Angus Scrimm, beloved horror veteran, character actor, and former album liner notes writer, has died today at the age of 89, Entertainment Weekly reported earlier. Scrimm's longtime friend Don Coscarelli confirmed the news. Coscarelli directing Scrimm in the Phantasm series, in addition to John Dies At The End, the Masters of Horror episode "Incident On And Off A Mountain Road," and Jim, The World's Greatest. Scrimm was a Glass Eye Pix productions regular, having appeared in films such as I Sell The Dead, Satan Hates You, and The Off Season, as well as in the popular Tales From Beyond The Pale radio plays. Some very sad news came in late this evening from Don Coscarelli, who revealed that Angus Scrimm has passed away at the age of 89. The Phantasm director took to Twitter not too long ago to confirm that Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully and in the company of friends and family:

"Phantasm’s Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones... Angus’s performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last of the classic horror movie stars... Angus was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed."

The recently announced 4k restoration of Phantasm and upcoming release of Phantasm V will be bittersweet with Angus Scrimm not around to see them, but it's a testament to his performance that this 1979 movie and the Tall Man will continue to terrify audiences for generations to come.

The 19th Annual Fantasia Film Festival is only a week away, beginning July 14 and running through August 4. And as promised for today, they’ve revealed their full line-up of films screening at 2015’s festival in Montreal.

This year’s line-up boasts 22 World Premieres, 13 International Premieres, and 21 North American Premieres. Both Marvel’s Ant-Man and the animated Miss Hokusai were previously announced, but now they’ve added the much anticipated Attack on Titan movie as their closing night film. Other highlights include the Sundance darlings Cooties, starring Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson, Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon and directed by the upcoming Spider-man director Jon Watts, and a trio of films from horror auteur Sion Sono.

After seeing ABC’s Of Death 2 at Fantastic Fest (you can read my review of the film Here), I was able to sit down with the director of one of my favorite shorts in the anthology – Larry Fessenden. His short “N is for Nexus” is a break-neck countdown through the streets of New York as Halloween night approaches. A couple preparing their Frankenstein costumes for a party sets in motion a series of events that intersect and slowly affect one another, leading to a devastating conclusion. Fessenden is practically a legend in the indie horror genre. He has worked as an actor, cinematographer, writer and director since the later 70’s and has created a named for himself with such feature films like Habit, Wendigo, and The Last Winter, while also appearing in films like I Sell The Dead, Stake Land, and Jug Face. I gotta say that this movie could be about anything. Let me present a few possible scenarios: A poor, homely, simpleton girl that is abused by those more fortunate than her, and hopefully, she executes a cold and calculating plan of revenge using supernatural means? Nope. Maybe a backwoods girl possessed by something unholy whose only salvation is an exorcism by a righteous crusader? No, but closer than the first option.

“Jug Face” begins with Ada, a young rural girl getting crudely deflowered in the woods by her boyfriend perhaps, unfortunately more like her brother. A few weeks later, she suspects and then confirms that she is pregnant.

Zach Shildwachter is a guy who has paid his dues in the film business, over the years amassing nearly 30 credits as both a production assistant and second unit director. After working on I Sell the Dead and "Fringe," to name just a couple of his credits...

Zach is now devoting his time to movies of his own, making his directorial debut with last year's short Thrill Kill.

The young filmmaker's latest short, Scum, a project that he both wrote and directed, has just been made available for free viewing. The 12-minute film is a sort of retro-inspired mix of Falling Down and Maniac, with the most interesting aspect being the fact that the voice-over dialogue is comprised entirely of real quotes from actual serial killers.

Starring Josh Miller, Scum explores the horrifying capabilities of a man pushed too far, brutally exposing how close we all are to becoming monsters in the blink of an eye.

There's no question that lately there's been a resurgence in horror anthology films, due in no small part to the success of the V/H/S franchise, and now one indie filmmaker is taking a look at the subgenre with the doc We Come in Pieces: The Rebirth of the Horror Anthology Film.

Purveyor of all things celebrating indie horror, Larry Fessenden, brought his Glass Eye Pix team to The Stanley Film Festival in Estes Park, Colorado for a live performance of Tales from Beyond the Pale, the anthology audio play that channels the old days of scary radio dramas. Y'know, that era when all it took was some actors, some sound effects, some music and your imagination to frighten the heebie-jeebies out of listeners. The series has previously featured the macabre works of Fessenden, Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), Simon Barrett (You're Next) and Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) among many others. For Tales from Beyond the Pale: The Stanley Edition, Fessenden and McQuaid pulled together an acting troupe which included Aj Bowen (The Sacrament), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), Jocelyn DeBoer (Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead) and even our pal Sam Zimmerman from Fangoria.
