One of the greatest services a comedy can provide is to let its performers be unbridled. Give talented actors the chance to play to their purest strengths and you’re already well on your way to an entertaining time at the movies. The biggest risk with that move is that without reins on either story or performer, things can get out of hand in a hurry. “Fist Fight,” the latest buddy comedy starring Charlie Day and Ice Cube, stands firmly on the other side of that divide. Even though it’s able to play to some of the strengths of its central characters, by the time the film arrives at its advertised confrontation, the story limps along when it should be hard-charging.
From the movie’s outset, Andy Campbell (Day) and Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) are set up as convenient opposites. Campbell is an English teacher, pottering around high school hallways,...

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Season 12 Preview: The Gang Channels ‘Making a Murderer’ — Watch
12 seasons in, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is still going strong. The irreverent comedy, which first aired on FX before migrating to the newer Fxx, remains surprisingly consistent. As indicated by the title, next week’s episode, “Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer,” finds the Gang in true-crime mode as they endeavor to discover who might be responsible for the death of Dennis’ ex-wife. Watch below.

Dennis is, of course, the primary suspect, and the episode finds the increasingly sociopathic character on the defensive. “Did I kill Maureen? No,” he insists. “Am I glad she’s dead? Sure.” Maureen is one of the show’s stranger characters, which is saying a lot: Over the course of several seasons, she’d undergone several surgeries to make herself more cat-like before her untimely death.

Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day have never been afraid to get a little meta with “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” From “The Gang Recycles Their Trash” (in which plot points from previous episodes were repurposed) to “The Gang Misses the Boat” (a Season 10 episode where the people of Paddy’s Pub decide they’ve drifted too far from their roots), episodes crop up where the “It’s Always Sunny” gang is doing more than comment on society: They’re talking about themselves.
What could come across as unappealingly egocentric is instead charmingly apt considering “Sunny” is all about selfish assholes, and the topic of this week’s episode channels such narcissistic villainy toward a new purpose: highlighting the difference between half-hour comedies and manipulative sitcoms. Similar to the brilliant deconstruction of classic sitcom structuring in “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award” (the lighting! the romantic pairings!

“The Young Pope” is not what you think. It’s not dripping with self-importance, adherent to the weight many assign its sensitive topic. Nor is Paolo Sorrentino’s serialized debut a monstrous affront to Catholicism, throwing stones at a centuries-old institution from the outside. Even after two hours with “The Young Pope,” the Italian director of “The Great Beauty” and “Youth” holds back the defining visual summation of his show.
But when it hits (early in Episode 3), you’ll know it. And you’ll laugh.
It’s not as though people haven’t been laughing already. Much has been made of HBO’s foreign acquisition in the past week, when the show’s title went viral well before the season premiere. Social media users came out in force with memes, song parodies, and sharp jabs at the stodgy ol’ church, all building a brand around a show not yet released...

There have been a lot of takes on “The Wizard of Oz,” a lot of different points-of-view on the fantastical world originally created by the novels of L. Frank Baum in 1900. But NBC’s “Emerald City” is, to the best of my knowledge, the first one that transforms the flying monkeys of the classic 1939 musical adaptation into steampunk drones. They’re still recognizably flying monkeys, but to the residents of Oz, they’re just a random bit of technology, accepted as normal in a world that’s anything but.
There is something genuinely special about NBC’s “Emerald City,” premiering tonight — and not just because of its complicated journey to television, which included at least one total shutdown during the development phase before being reborn as a 10-episode series directed in its totality by Tarsem Singh, in a wide variety of exotic locations around the world.

Best Drama Series
Nominees:
“The Crown” (Netflix)
“Game of Thrones” (HBO)
“Stranger Things” (Netflix)
“This Is Us” (NBC)
“Westworld” (HBO)
Will Win: “The Crown”
Could Win: “This Is Us”
Should Win: “The Crown”
A new champion will be crowned, and we’re betting on Netflix royalty. After the 2016 winner, “Mr. Robot,” missed the cut in 2017, the doors were thrown open, as four freshman dramas stepped in for their shot at Best Drama Series. The two HBO entries may split the vote, considering they appeal to an identical demographic, and “This Is Us” feels a bit too sentimental for the dark taste of the HFPA. Though “Stranger Things” has the buzz, Netflix made “The Crown” to bring home the gold. So odds are the network’s weight is behind its prestige period piece.

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” returned this week with one of its most ambitious seasons yet, opening an unprecedented 12th year with “The Gang Turns Black,” an episode in which the gang takes on racial prejudice from a brand new perspective. It’s an storyline that found its most brilliant touches, the creators admitted, after they decided to do the “hard” version of it.
For a full spoiler review of “The Gang Turns Black,” TV Critic Ben Travers has you covered. But IndieWire was also on the “Sunny” set during the episode’s production, speaking with the cast between takes in Paddy’s Bar (a set which star Kaitlin Olson later admitted, after 12 years, feels like home).

When producers Alysia Reiner and Sarah Megan Thomas cooked up the idea to make the first female-driven Wall Street movie, their mandate for the feature was clear: It would be written by female screenwriter, directed by a female director and lead by a very strong female cast. The duo put years of work into researching the feature, shoring up investors and making sure that what would become “Equity” retained their original vision from top to bottom.
The film follows hard-driving investment banker Naomi Bishop (Anna Gunn) as she embarks on the biggest deal of her career – shepherding a rising Silicon Valley company that smacks of Facebook and Snapchat to its initial public offering – a task she’s made her speciality during a mostly successful career. Burnt by a previous deal that went awry and newly passed over for a major promotion, Naomi is dedicated to doing her job flawlessly. But...

The drama tells the story of a princess-turned-assassin (played by Shu Qi) who was trained to murder corrupt politicians by a nun in exile. After struggling to complete one of her assignments, she is sent to kill her cousin, a military leader, as a punishment intended to toughen her up. The film's simple premise is rendered in gorgeous fashion, as Hou's ornamental visual style, exquisite framing and methodical filmmaking imbue one of the oldest genres in Chinese literature and cinema with an unparalleled degree of artistry and grace. In Michael Haffner’s 2-of-5-Star review of Fifty Shades Of Grey here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote “….with all the script and story issues and its misrepresentation of cultural aspects within a sexual community, Fifty Shades is still the most sex we’ve seen from a major studio film at the multiplex in quite some time. That’s not a bad thing. It’s a dumb escapist sex fantasy…… Let the fans of the books enjoy their fantasies, and maybe if this Grey phenomenon continues to grow something better or at least more memorable might come along.” (read all of Michael’s review Here)

Grudge Match is set for release in the UK January 24th and if you’ve not seen or heard anything about it, have a watch of the video below! We’ve seen a couple of trailers for the movie bringing together Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro which if you’ve missed can be seen here. Grudge Match plays on two of the most well known boxing movies of all time in the form of Raging Bull and the Rocky franchise to pit the two boxing legends together.
This new featurette presents a fake documentary (“mocumentary”) style storyline with a slightly more substantial take on the history between former light heavyweight champions “Kid” (Robert De Niro) and “Razor Sharp” (Sylvester Stallone). It has interviews with the likes of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield talking about the two former fighters coming back together after such a long time and what we...

Ah, they grow up so fast! It seem like only yesterday that Channing Tatum and his lovely wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, welcomed their daughter Everly into the world. But as the hunky actor reminded us all during his appearance on Friday's Ellen, it's already been "six months" since he became a father. "She just got her first tooth," Tatum told Ellen DeGeneres via satellite. "It's the cutest thing. Razor sharp. I think she's going to be cutting me very soon, but it's as cute as can be." The 33-year-old star couldn't be there in person to chat with DeGeneres as he is currently shooting the sequel to 21 Jump Street in New Orleans with Jonah Hill, conveniently...

For a Great Dane, Scooby-Doo has had an impressive innings. He’s now 44 years old, and has been through a number of mediums: TV series, videogames, stage plays, and many movies. In all that time the Us version of Scooby has been voiced by only five actors (the original actor, Don Messick, played him from 1969 to 1994), and there remains something so familiar and reassuring about Scooby, even as the storylines and the entanglements of the Scooby gang change around him. Nowadays in Mystery Incorporated Velma may be on/off dating Shaggy, and Fred and Daphne may be having problems with their relationship, but Scooby remains as cowardly and hungry as ever.

I expect that even fans of Gossip Girl enjoy watching the show for all the backstabbing and criticism, and therefore don't even mind when a beloved character gets killed off or embarrassed or whatever else happens to rich, pretty people. So correct me if I'm wrong, but you'll be excited to see Jessica Szohr get eaten in Piranha 3D right? Szohr, also known as Vanessa Abrams on Gossip Girl, has been added to the movie's cast of the Dimension Films remake, which already includes Elisabeth Shue, Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott and Dina Meyers. Szohr will, true to form, play a co-ed who comes to town for spring break, but just like the beach beauties on Amity Island in Jaws, is apparently doomed to a grisly death. Shooting on the film begins this month in Arizona, and it will be released just in time for swimsuit season on March...
