Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

Michelle Monaghan, Jason Clarke, and Jai Courtney are about to converge on a prison that holds the world's most dangerous terrorists in the upcoming action-thriller "Black Site."
In "Zero Dark Thirty," Clarke played an intelligence officer who presided over the torture and interrogation of suspected terrorists opposite Jessica Chastain's CIA analyst and protagonist. In "Black Site," it's now Monaghan who is taking on the analyst role, while the tables have turned and Clarke is getting into character as one of the terrorists, a deadly operative codenamed Hatchet, who "uses a skinning knife to erase the identity of his victims." He's not the kind of guy you'd want running loose in...

"You gonna tell us what really happened?" Redbox has revealed an official trailer for Black Site, an action thriller from filmmaker Sophia Banks making her feature directorial debut with this. In addition to one other film that's also called Black Site (a horror), there's so many other forgettable films recently that are also set at "CIA black sites" - for example One Shot or Invincible or Agent Game just in the past year alone. In fact, the plot of this one sounds a lot like the plot of Agent Game, which is probably why it's being dumped to VOD. A group of officers based in a labyrinthine top-secret must fight for their lives against Hatchet, a brilliant and infamous high-value detainee. When he escapes, his mysterious and deadly agenda has far-reaching and dire consequences. Michelle Monaghan stars with Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Uli Latukefu, Lucy Barrett, and Phoenix Raei. This doesn't look that bad,...

Michelle Monaghan has been cast in the dual lead role on Netflix's upcoming thriller series "Echoes," the streamer said Wednesday.
Described as a mystery thriller, the seven-episode series centers on two identical twins, Leni and Gina, who have secretly swapped lives since they were children. "They share two homes, two husbands, and a child but everything in their perfectly choreographed world is thrown into disarray when one of the sisters goes missing," reads the streamer's description.
Monaghan will star as both Leni and Gina. Leni is described as "content to stay home, marry her childhood sweetheart, raise her daughter and help run the beautiful horse farm where everyone lives together rooted in their long shared history," while Gina is the "rebellious sister that turned her back on all that and escaped to Los Angeles where she rose to quick fame writing about a darker undertow that informed her Southern childhood.

Melbourne-based private film finance group Elevate Production Finance has hired Shana Levine as head of production investment.
Levine joins other recent recruits in London-based film financier and producer Charles Auty, who is COO, and Brisbane-based entertainment and finance lawyer Ted Cawrey, who is head of legal and business affairs.
Epf MD Craig McMahon said Levine’s appointment would now mean the company could provide “superior end-to-end service to productions”.
Since launching in 2017, Elevate has helped fund a number of Australian and international films, including George Miller’s Three Thousand Years Of Longing; Rich Lee’s War Of The Worlds starring Eva Longoria; Liam-Neeson starrer Blacklight; Sophia Banks’ debut feature Black Site; and Film Nation’s Misanthrope, directed by Damián Szifron.
During the height of Covid-19, the company, which is backed by Australian and international institutions and private equity, reassessed its protocols to provide debt funding to productions despite the pandemic.

Booth also starred in the original short, which played at more than 20 festivals, including Los Angeles Short Films Festival, London Sci-Fi Film Festival, and the Detroit Shetown Film Festival, where it won Best in Fest.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Exclusive: Rocket Science has scored a raft of international pre-sales on Michael Gracey’s (The Greatest Showman) Better Man, based on the life of singer Robbie Williams.
Significant deals have closed in the UK (Entertainment), Germany & Austria (Tobis), Australia (Village Roadshow), Italy (Lucky Red), Cis/Baltic States (Volga) and Scandinavia (Nordisk).
Pacts have also been secured in Eastern Europe (Vertical), Benelux (The Searchers), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Middle East (Front Row), Greece/Cyprus (Odeon), Portugal (Lusomundo), and Israel (Forum).
Production is slated for summer 2021 on the feature, which will explore the experiences that made Williams who he is, and the demons he battled both on and off the stage. We hear there will be a strong CGI component to the film, which will negate the need to cast a big name to portray Williams.

A desire to see more women directing sci-fi and action-driven movies, coupled with a goal to add Australian flavour to the genres, led Sophia Banks to sign on to direct Black Site, her debut feature.
Scheduled to commence shooting in the Gold Coast next month, the film follows a group of officers based in a labyrinthine top-secret CIA black site who must fight for their lives as they come up against Hatchet, an infamous high-value detainee whose deadly agenda has vast consequences.
Australian actors Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad) join Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible) in what Banks describes as a “diverse” cast.
“Phillip Noyce, who is an EP and one of my mentors, connected me with Jason and I was super excited to bring him on,” she says.
“Jai and I connected a while ago and were looking for something to work on.

"All we have to do is keep the chip safe..." Shout Factory has revealed an official trailer for 400 Bullets, another jingoistic military action movie from British action filmmaker Tom Paton. The film is set in Afghanistan at a British military outpost, and is described as an "edge-of-your-seat, military actioner about what it means to fight for honor instead of profit." Nice try making this sound like something it isn't. 400 Bullets combines gun battles, epic hand-to-hand fight sequences and the banter of hardened soldiers into a lean, two-fisted film that packed with a wallop. The film boasts a stellar British cast of Jean-Paul Ly, Andrew Lee Potts, James Warren, Adele Oni, Steve Blades, & Wayne Gordon. Have a look below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Tom Paton's 400 Bullets, direct from Shout's YouTube: One cold winter night in ...

[Note: With the film now out digitally in the UK and in the Us (under the title Black Ops), here’s a reposting of our review of Tom Paton’s The Ascent – from the films debut at Frightfest last August]
As someone who reviews a Lot of movies, who grew up in the era of the video shop, its fun to see people clearly raised on the same types of films I enjoyed as a teenager now stepping behind the camera and making films of their own. Films that, as the filmmakers peers, I can recognise as having been influenced by the very same films I know, and in a lot of cases, love. Case in point, Tom Paton.
Paton’s last film, Black Site, clearly wore its inspirations on its sleeve, the John Carpenter-esque action-horror hybrid was just that.

As part of our support for the launch of Tom Paton’s new film The Ascent on VOD, here’s an interview with actor and regular Tom Paton collaborator Toby Osmond, who appears in the film as Jack Ford.
The Ascent follows a group of mercenaries, who are sent to Eastern Europe in the middle of a civil war to retrieve intel. Shortly after the mission, the unit find themselves trapped on a never-ending stairwell; forced to climb or die. To survive, they must revisit their past sins if they ever want to get off.
The Ascent reminded me of Michael Mann’s The Keep, which was sort of his lost film…
To: I’ve heard people say that The Ascent reminds them of a cross between Ringu and Time…something, I get the Ringu reference because of the monster in our film, but I’ve not seen The Keep.

Thought to be the first film premiere inside virtual reality, “The Ascent” will bow June 12 at 7 p.m. (BST) via AltspaceVR, and will be available to those with an Oculus headset, or similar. The event will be called “The Vr Film Festival.”
For those without AltspaceVR or access to a visor, the film will also premiere on Goldfinch’s recently launched VOD service Birdbox.Film at the same time.
The AltspaceVR premiere will also include a Q&a with director Tom Paton and cinematographer George Burt.

The world’s most insipid vampires are back in inaction! Twilight has never been more about people standing around waiting for stuff to happen to them than Breaking Dawn Part 2 is. The inert Cullen clan of the Pacific Northwest is two larger -- what with former human Bella Swan now all superstrong and supersparkly, and her half-vampire/half-human daughter, Renesmee (*snort*), now arrived in the world -- and twice as torpid. The new additions to the family only just barely rouse the Cullens to endless rounds of gazing adoringly at one another. Seriously, what do these people do all day, all year, all eternity? Being immortal must be excruciating if this is how one must pass the time. And even for a franchise that has attempted to make virtues, of the actual moral sort as well as the narrative variety, out of the most inconsequential of things -- has it...

Amanda Seyfried is one of those frustrating actresses whose talent is undeniable, albeit stymied by her insistent casting in rote fare unbecoming of her abilities, which for the last 2 years alone has included ‘Dear John’, ‘Letters to Juliet’ (nice try though), ‘Red Riding Hood’, ‘In Time’, and now, in what is arguably her worst, ‘Gone’.
There’s some definite potential here, as the film deals with the fallout of a young woman, Jill Conway (Seyfried), returning to society following her apparent rescue from the clutches of a serial killer, whose grim lair in the woods is home to countless human remains. Of course, when Jill’s recovering alcoholic sister, Molly (Emily Wickersham), goes missing, she thinks the killer has returned to finish what he started, while the incredulous authorities are skeptical, given Jill’s previous incarceration in a psychiatric facility after her parents’ untimely death.

Rapper/actor Mos Def is the latest piece of casting to join Showtime's upcoming season 6 production of 'Dexter'. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Mos Def -below ('Be Kind, Rewind', 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy') will join the cast along with the previously announced casting of Colin Hanks ('King Kong', 'Untraceable') and are both set to play baddies! Yep that's right folks, Hanks is set to play a character named Travis, 'Dexter's main nemesis and a highly intelligent ancient artifacts expert who is linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami.'. And Mos Def will be playing 'a hardened ex-con who claims to have found religion yet seems to continually find himself surrounded by violence. Dexter will reveal the truth of who he really is.' I for one love the series and cannot wait for for season 6!...

Following on from our reports earlier this week about a new batch of characters that are ready to join serial killer show 'Dexter' for it's season 6 Showtime debut this Fall it appears that Colin Hanks -below ('King Kong', 'Untraceable') has been officially cast into the show. And interestingly enough the three character descriptions we revealed the other day (found below) aren't to fit his new role. Lots of secrecy surrounds Hanks new part on the show which could possibly mean another serial killing enemy for our anti-hero 'Dexter' to face off with? Well according to Showtime president David Nevins it's not necessarily that cut and dry....

The pieces are all falling into place. First, Showtime revealed the first teaser for the new season of Dexter. Now, TV Line is reporting that Colin Hanks (Untraceable) will join the sixth season of Dexter. It seems likely that his role will not be one of the three recurring roles we posted about last week. So what will his role be? More after the jump. Well, Showtime is, naturally, being tight-lipped about Hanks's role. Following the pattern of big name gues stars from previous seasons (Jimmy Smits, John Lithgow, Julia Stiles), it seems likely that Hanks will be around for the entire season, but whether he is friend or foe is left to be seen. According to Showtime president David Nevins, "It is not...

Colin Hanks is set to join the cast of the sixth season of Showtime's hit series Dexter. He will join Michael C. Hall in a large role. Earlier we shared a teaser trailer for the upcoming season. At this time there are no details available about Hanks' character. There has been some speculation that he will be playing Dexter's nemesis.
David Nevins, Showtime's President, revealed there will be multiple villains in season 6. Here is what Nevins had to say:
"It is not [about] one big bad. There's one interesting story that will move through the season, and it will be cast very interestingly, but it's not exactly that one person."
Production may already be under way on the sixth season, with episodes to debut in the fall. I recently watched Hanks in Untraceable, where he was killed by a serial killer. He is a great actor and one that I...

Get our pens, a couple movies have some dates and one....doesn't. The indie thriller "Gone" starring Amanda Seyfried will now arrive on February 24, 2012 which sounds about right for a genre flick. It's not often I get studio provided exclusives here on RopeofSilicon but every so often someone decides to throw me a bone. Now I can't say the clip below is mind-blowing. It doesn't feature the two actors mentioned in the headline (at least not in person) or even a line of dialogue, but I saw this as a chance for you to get a look at the work of a director with a bigger studio project coming up in the near future.
The clip comes from a film called Adrift and when I was first asked if I would be interested in the exclusive I couldn't remember ever even hearing of the film. So I did a quick search to see if I'd actually mentioned it on the site before. To my surprise... I had.
