Fox is developing a comedy series centered on a washed up golf prodigy, Variety has learned exclusively.

Titled “Thunderjacks,” the series has received a script commitment at the broadcast network. Chad Mountain is writing and executive producing, with Oliver Hudson, John Stalberg Jr., Douglas Banker of Five All in the Fifth, Jonathan Watson, and Scott MacArthur also executive producing. When showrunner Issa López offered him the role of police officer Hank Prior, he’d never seen a single episode from the first three seasons of the HBO limited series. He thought the character was too one-dimensional and not nuanced enough. When López said she wanted the character to play guitar in one scene, he didn’t think that was a good idea. And when she said that the instrumental song he’d reluctantly written also needed words for Hank to sing, he resisted for weeks, thinking it’d be too performative.

Exclusive: The vampires are moving from Amazon to HBO.

A comedy series based on Grady Hendrix’s New York Times bestseller The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires has landed at HBO, with the author writing alongside The Righteous Gemstones duo Danny McBride and Edi Patterson.

The project was previously in development at Amazon with Patrick Moran’s Pkm Productions but has now moved to the Warner Bros Discovery premium network without Moran’s involvement.

Hendrix, McBride and Patterson will exec produce, alongside Brandon James for McBride’s Rough House Pictures. Quirk Books, which published the novel, will also have an exec producer credit.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires follows a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger that may be a vampire killing their children.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open with a familiar face: filmmaker David Gordon Green’s latest, the world premiere of his heartfelt comedy “Nutcrackers,” will kick off the festival on September 5. Viewership for the back-to-back final episodes of “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 3 was up 9% from the two episodes dropped during its June premiere, TheWrap can reveal exclusively.

As the HBO comedy wrapped up its third installment Sunday evening, the final two episodes averaged 590,000 viewers across streaming platform Max and linear telecasts, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day viewership.

With the added boost from the finale episodes, “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 3 is on track to become the series’ most watched season yet. The first five episodes of the nine-episode season have averaged over 5 million viewers, currently outpacing the average viewership for Season 2 episodes after the same amount of time by over 10%. While Season 2 averaged 4.3 million viewers at this time, the second installment went on to average 5.1 million viewers across platforms.

Danny McBride’s absurdist megachurch comedy returns for Season 3 on June 18, as “The Righteous Gemstones” unveiled the first trailer for its next installment. Exclusive: Jillian Bell (Brittany Runs a Marathon) has been tapped to star alongside Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross in the holiday comedy Candy Cane Lane, which Reginald Hudlin is directing for Amazon.

Exclusive: The 2x WGA Award nominee and Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast member has wrapped production on her feature film directorial debut, First Time Female Director, Deadline has learned.

Chelsea Peretti starred, wrote and produced the Fox Entertainment MarVista and Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions movie which is set at a local theater in Glendale, CA, where a newly minted female director (Peretti) struggles to fill the shoes of her male predecessor, putting her Southern rural drama in jeopardy.

Co-starring opposite Peretti include Blake Anderson, Kate Berlant (Would It Kill You to Laugh? A League of Their Own), Jak Knight, Emmy Award winner Megan Mullally, Benito Skinner (Queer as Folk) and Megan Stalter.

There’s also appearances by Max Greenfield, Brad Hall (Saturday Night Live), Tim Heidecker (Eastbound & Down), Natasha Leggero, Emmy winner Poehler, Andy Richter and Xosha Roquemore, the movies counts several surprise cameos.

First Time Female Director marks MarVista and Fox Entertainment’s first title to include scenes shot on its studio lot in Los Angeles, where the film’s production offices are based. In addition to Peretti, producers include Poehler, Kate Arend and Jordan Grief for Paper Kite, and Deanna Barillari. Peretti is an actress, comedian, producer and television writer who starred as Gina Linetti on the hit Fox/NBC comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which notched won 2x Primetime Emmys. Most recently, she was featured in Amazon Prime Video’s second installment of its comedy special, Yearly Departed. The two-time WGA Award nominee received nods on Parks and Recreation and received a SAG ensemble nom for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Peretti’s writing credits also include Portlandia, Sarah Silverman Program and Kroll Show, as well as Saturday Night Live. She can be heard on hit animated projects, such as Big Mouth, The Simpsons and Sing 2. On the stage, Peretti’s hour-long stand-up special, One of the Greats, was released in 2014 on Netflix, and her half-hour special, Comedy Central Presents, aired in 2011. Most recently, Peretti hosted Variety’s Power of Women celebration in 2021 and the Writers Guild Awards in 2019.
